When the new girl, Melissa, spreads gossip about Alex, Alex watches her friendships crumble as former friends start ignoring her. The heart of the story is Alex's struggle to do the right thing rather than lash out — and whether doing right is enough to win her friends back.
The book shows its age (it was published in 1990), which mostly reads as charming period detail: characters hunting for a quarter to use a payphone, for instance. Alex herself is a fun narrator, punctuating her world with an endearing habit of
exclaiming "Brussels sprouts!" at every turn.
A quick, relatable read about handling mean-girl drama with grace — dated in places, but warm and worth it for the right young reader.
