Where fairy tale charm meets Regency romance

Trig Hillam has been (almost) happily avoiding his impending responsibilities, spending time exploring and scaling mountains during his Grand Tour. Everything changes when he stumbles upon a beautiful young woman seated atop a rocky cliff. For the first time in months, Trig finds a reason to stay put, finding joy in a new project and especially in his growing connection to the mysterious young woman.

Lorelei Baird has spent her life helping her father collect and preserve folktales and oral histories throughout rural Prussia. Though she enjoys her work, she longs to find her place, yet she struggles to trust again after suffering an unexpected betrayal by her father's handsome assistant.

When a dangerous threat resurfaces, will Trig and Lorelei find their true place is with one another?

Lorelei and the Traveler is part of the Once by a Shore series of Regency fairy tale retellings inspired by water-based fairy tales and legends. The stories in the series are clean and wholesome and can be enjoyed in a single afternoon. Each story is a stand-alone work and may be read in any order.

Lorelei and the Traveler
Once by Shore #2
By Sienna Peak

Author Sienna Peak has done it again, creating a delightfully engaging story that will enchant you. Well, I hope it does.

Lorelei Baird and her father are gathering a collection of stories, oral histories in rural Prussia, when Trig Hillam and Mr. Davies happen upon them. Trig is on his grand tour of Europe before he should take on the responsibilities of life. But Lorelei and the Prussian countryside have him, for once, not eager for his next adventure. Instead, he decides to help the Bairds with their project.

I loved when the group went to Herr Muller to hear his tales. It was an unusual experience for them; a trade, if you will, for the stories he kept. I refuse to say more because it must be enjoyed as written without giving away any hints.

This book can be enjoyed over a long afternoon and be read as a standalone without having read the previous one in the series. This series is a retelling of lesser-known fairy tales and legends tied to water. I love how there is a Regency aspect to them that further ties the stories together by era rather than a set locale.

This story offers a clean, wholesome, no-spice story that is suitable, in my opinion, for younger teens and up.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

A genre I have come to love is regency fairytale retellings.

This is based on the German legend and poem The Lorelei.

Lorelei is a scholar's daughter who accompanies him as he gathers and translates oral stories and history throughout Prussia.

Trig is on his grand tour accompanied by his tutor. He is unsure of what he wants to do in the future.

The heroine is very close with her supportive father.
As the hero offers to assist in their work, he finds true purpose for the first time in his life.

He helps gather tales while she draws corresponding sketches. As they work together, supporting one another, feelings deepen on both sides.

Being from Germany, I grew up with many fairytales and legends including "Die Lorelei". I enjoyed this Regency-era reimagining with German customs and phrases sprinkled throughout.

The epilogue assured a happy future for not only Trig and Lorelei but a secondary couple as well.

I received an ARC and share my honest review of this delightful story which has been added to my Keeper shelf.

I really loved that this story starts off with a feeling of youthful adventure right from the beginning! It also has playful banter between Lorelei & Trig almost immediately! I liked that they were comfortable with each other almost like they had always known one another….it made for a lot of fun between the banter & the easy way they had together! It’s even more fun that we get two romances! I liked that Lorelei & her father are collectors/preservers of stories! I think that would have been hard work but also very interesting! As a result you also get to see Lorelei, Trig, Davies, & Frieda meet a lot of new people & explore throughout the book! This story is a unique combination of the Lorelei story & a sweet romance that leaves you with a lasting satisfaction with how things turned out!

A regency fairytale retelling of Lorelei which is a German legend. This legend is about a maiden who throws herself into the Rhine river in despair over a faithless lover. This transformed her into a siren who lured fishermen to their end. This book on the other hand is about Lorelei who helps her father collect folktales throughout Prussia. She suffers an unexpected betrayal from her father’s assistant which causes her to struggle with trusting others.
I really enjoyed that the love interest meets Lorelei while scaling cliffs which feels like a great way to add elements of the original story. This found a great way to blend this story with the original tale though many small elements without being the exact same tale. Trig and Lorelei have an almost instant connection with how comfortable the two are with each other. Unlike the original story this one actually has a happy ending.

Trig may consider himself silly and aimless. But his interactions with Lorelai showed that he was a hardworking, thoughtful, and protective gentleman.

Lorelai and her father were involved in an interesting research project. Stories are such an important part of a country’s or region’s history. (Imagine if Snow White or Cinderella had been lost to time.) All the stories they collected were ones I’d never heard of before.

Mr. Davies and Freida were an unexpected but welcome addition. (They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Looks like Frieda’s bienenstich did the trick!)

Thank you to Sienna Peake for the gifted ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily. All opinions expressed are my own.

Set up high in the picturesque mountains, Trig comes upon a beautiful young lady who reminds him of the maiden from a poem. Coincidentally, she has the same name, Lorelai. Trig offers to help her and her father gathering folk tales and lore from the locals to create a collection of these before they disappear.

If you are a reader of folk tale reimaginings, Lorelai is one that you can read quickly since it is a novella. It has more than one clean romance, some danger, and a feeling of the setting like Heidi.

Such a sweet regency fairytale retelling!

I’m not familiar with this German fairytale, but I enjoyed the story!

I loved how Lorelei and her father were collecting and preserving the stories of the people of Prussia. The references to fairytales in familiar with, and some I hadn’t heard of, were very fun!

You should check this story out if you love sweet regency love stories with a fairytale twist!

4.5 stars: If you're looking for a quiet escape of a romance read, this is it! Lorelei and Trig work together so well, and I also enjoyed the hints we got at the side couple. Although this is very short, there is tension and some excitement. I do think their initial meeting was my favorite scene. This sweet novella is inspired by a myth/fairy tale that I was not familiar with, so (as always) I really enjoyed the author's note with clear, fascinating explanation.

Thank you to the author for the ARC; all opinions are my own.

This is a fun, sweet, engaging story. The setting in the German countryside gives it a unique flavour while the Regency era setting and the writing style fill the story with charm. Inspired by the poem the Lorelei, it gives the characters a much happier ending than the original storyline and weaves in mentions of other well and lesser known Germanic fairy tales. It is a great light-hearted quick read.

I received an ARC and voluntarily leave an honest review.
