Ghostly Interests

Rate this book
Harper Harlow lives in a world of ghosts. She sees them. She talks to them. She investigates them. She sends them on their merry way. She’s not embarrassed by her abilities, and she’s not afraid to be who she is. She’s also not looking for a relationship. Enter Jared Monroe, a smooth-talking police detective who sees things in black and white and ignores any shades of gray. He doesn’t believe in ghosts, and while he’s intrigued by the feisty blonde ghost detective, he’s not interested in the paranormal. When twenty-one-year-old Annie Dresden’s body washes up on the beach of Whisper Cove, Harper and Jared collide. Sparks may be flying, but so is confusion and mistrust. Harper calls on her loyal band of ghost hunters to solve the crime, and Jared relies on his training to tackle the same problem. It doesn’t matter what approach they take because all paths are destined to intersect. Can Harper and Jared learn to work together? And, more importantly, can new ghosts let go of the past and give in to an obscure future? It’s anyone’s guess when big personalities go to war and find they might have more in common than they think.

An enjoyable and read that had me comfortably sinking into my couch.

Harper can see ghosts. A fair few people don't believe her, but her job is to help ghosts resolve their unfinished business and cross over.

Harper I enjoyed as a heroine and her interactions/banter with her best-friend Zander had me smiling. Curious to see how things go with her and the new cop in town.

I did guess the killer early on and felt the mystery could have packed more punch but that's a small niggle.

Harper's parents were entertaining.

Surprised Harper didn't see more ghosts out and about.

Good idea, but it needs work.

Harper Harlow can see ghosts. She's always been able to see them. by miraculously not getting thrown into psyche wards or ostracized by her small town community, Harper and her bestie, Zander, have a ghost hunting business. Her special sight leads her to a crime scene where new Detective, or police officer, Jared Monroe is on his first case.

Here' what I liked: the idea behind the story. The first chapter was fun, and the idea of a dream catcher being a trap to spirits. The MC is closer to thirty than 18.

I'm going to do my best to be gentle. Here's what I didn't like: *The only distinct voice was Molly, everyone else sounded the same. Luckily the author made it clear who was speaking.
* In the first chapter, it sounded like Harper had some kind of magic, or force, that pushed the spirit into the dream catcher. There was no explanation and nothing like that happened again.
*Harper can see the dead. But, again, in the first chapter she asks if Molly can see the ghost. Is it because Harper can only see ghosts that aren't acting like poltergeist? Do they have to be newly deceased? Why couldn't she see that ghost?
*There are no other ghosts in that town. She doesn't see another one at all, only Annie.
*The gossip mill in Whisper Cove. Yeah, yeah, yeah - it's a small town. But Mel is a seasoned police officer, he should know better than to gossip about an active murder case with his sister, who isn't in law enforcement.
*Speaking of, in no way should Jared have discussed the details of the case with Harper, even if he just wants to get in her pants.
*Harper is everyone's darling. How? She's a mopey, disgruntled, anti-social girl who seems confused about social interactions.
*The Scooby Doo reference. They are talking about Velma in the gang, but they call her Thelma. It only took me a few seconds to confirm her name.
*The romance is weird. One moment Jared acts like she's trouble, which she is. he hauls her in. And then Mel explains everyone loves her and he shouldn't have brought her in for questioning. The next moment, Jared is all "My bad, you can go. Let's look at the house, and eat dinner together, and hold hands. I want to believe you can see ghosts."
*The murderer and reason were predictable.
*Editing and formatting - there are errors throughout the book. Wrong words used but still spelled correctly, like "I'm just an overage girl" should have been "I'm just an average girl." Sentences were broken up as if there weren't room for them on the line, but there was plenty of room.
*The Dialogue. Oh my goodness, it is terrible. Everyone has the same voice. Most of Harper's interactions with anyone was "I ..... uhm," As as Jared, Zander, Mel, Jay, Collin ... you get my point. Molly was the only character who had a lot of time in the book who didn't constantly talk like that. That dialogue is what really made the book fall for me.

Overall, the idea is nice, the beginning has potential, but it doesn't feel finished. It reads like a first draft and it really could have used someone reading it for the author first before publishing. A little fact checking and some polish could turn this into a fun and quick read. I'm not happy to give it such a low rating, but I cant justify any other rating for the book.

So, I enjoyed this book because it is a very light easy listen. The characters are slightly annoying, but I still liked them and was invested in their story. The mystery was pretty predictable, and the ending was a little drawn out, but the story was still enjoyable. I didn’t buy the romance side of the story, but I will have to see how well the author handles them in the next book.

The characters have an easy chemistry with each other and I really enjoyed feeling like Jared – a newcomer who is suddenly dropped into the town of Whisper Cove and not sure how to handle it. Most of the supporting characters are the heart of this story and make the book so much better. The main character Harper seems well developed but the author did not develop the character of Jared at all.

My least favorite thing about the story is the lack of maturity between Zander and Harper. I feel like the author watched way too many episodes of “Will and Grace” and decided every interaction between the two friends should be sarcastic, rude and completely lack of emotional development.

Angel Clark is not a great narrator for this story. These characters already have a certain level of immaturity about them, but the narrator makes them sound like 12 years olds pretending to be adults in their mid-20s. This is one of the few times I felt like the narrator was a detriment to the book.

I loved the dynamic between Harper and Zander, they were probably the best part of this book. The mystery was okay but obvious and I wish there would have been a bit more...scariness maybe to the ghostly aspect but other than that this was a light and fun read.

I barely made it through this book. It's terribly written, the dialog is juvenile, the characters are unlikable, the killer was obvious as soon as he was introduced. It wasn't worth the 99 cents I paid for it.

So, I read this book for the first time in 2015. This was my two star review:

I was disappointed. It felt like a remake. It was just way too similar to another series that I read and actually enjoy. The writing was very juvenile. Authors should know how to use proper grammar. Using the wrong your/you're really annoys me.

I then accidentally bought the first three in the series is an omnibus thingie, because I was desperate for something to read and I do like this author. Well, I like her writing under another pen name better, but I've grown to love this one, too.

This time reading it through, I was not as disappointed. The editing was definitely better. It still reminded me of another ghost hunter with a gay best friend series, but I enjoyed it. I will read the next two and see if I still feel that way.

Date I finished reading it for the second time - 04/21/2018

4 Stars... This had just enough of a gritty mystery to be intriguing coupled with the lighthearted banter and sweet romance to fall into the cozy mystery category... I loved the fact that Harper was not afraid to own her abilities despite the backlash from others... She demonstrates strength, fortitude, and independence while also having those she loves to depend on for comfort and support... Coupling her with Jared, the no nonsense cop who sees life in black and white with very little shades of grey, was entertaining to say the least... The chemistry is certainly present between these two characters and I look forward to seeing how it grows throughout the series... The wit and sarcasm in this book was hilarious especially between Harper and her best friend Zander... All the characters are truly memorable and fun to read... I am excited to see how this series unfolds:)

I really love the characters in all of the books I have read by her so far. My biggest complaint is that sometimes her dialogue between the characters is too juvenile. I am all for playful banter and sarcasm, but some of her scenes are not always up to par. I hope as her books go on this will get better because I really like the characters she has created and look forward to more of their adventures.

The "Perfect Package"!!!

Lily Harper Hart's newest series is wickedly entertaining! It is chock full of oddball characters. There's Zander, Harper's best friend soul mate/business partner, who is openly gay, buff, & absolutely hysterical (I want him as my best friend!). Then there's her 2 other partners, Molly & Eric, Zander's uncle Detective Mel & his new partner Jared (who btw is every woman's, & if you believe Zander - every gay man's dream). Harlow's parents had me laughing till my sides ached! They are quite the couple. Harlow sees ghosts. She & Zander own a business called Ghost Hunters, where they help souls transition to the other side, even if they don't want to. In this first of many stories (I hope) Harlow sees the ghost of Annie, a college girl who has been murdered. When Harlow decides to help the young woman by finding her murderer the ride begins & I found the book impossible to put down! I don't want to spoil the plot so I will just say, it is a great combination of suspense & humor & I can't wait for the sequel!!!

Love this book. Zanny fun characters, great plot. Lots of laugh out loud scenes. First time I have read a book with a gay person in it but this was clean and the two friends male and female had been friends since childhood. You will love it. Cozy mystery.

I am completely in love with Jared and Zander!! Love this story... so full of romance, comedy, mystery and a freaking twist towards the end that I did not see coming at all. I recommend it hands down.

Harper can see ghosts. Most people don't believe her, but her job is to help ghosts cross over, and there are more out there than you would think.

When a new cop comes to town, and a murder is taken place on his first day. He thinks Harlow is a fake, and taking advantage of people, but that doesn't stop him from being attracted to her. She feels the same, but knows he doesn't believe her, so she's unsure where there relationship can go.

This book was okay. It had a nice story line, and great characters. But it felt rushed, and not enough of a mystery really. Harper didn't do too much in it, other than a few things, and that was frustrating.

Other than that I did like it, but I'm not sure if I will read more, and I thought it was pretty funny at times as well.

Fun Paranormal Mystery

I enjoyed the story and characters. I particularly loved the interaction between Harper and her roommate Zander. Best friends since grade school, they hold nothing back but all is said with undying love and loyalty. They live in a small town, where everyone knows each other. So the new cop in town is trying to come to grips with the fact that nothing is secret for long. And he starts off on shaky ground with his skepticism about whether Harper really see and talks to ghosts. This was a fun book.

I almost stopped reading this book after the first chapter. It was pretty ghost buster-ish. I kept with it (I was reading while on my stationary bike and didn't want to stop to find another book). The book did get better, but the dialogue was a bit juvenile. I figured out the killer early on, which is kind of annoying. However, it was a light, easy, fun read. I may even read the next book in the series just to find out what happens between Harper and Jared, although I can probably guess ;)

Ghost Hunter meets local cop over a dead body!

Great debut series novel about a woman who sees ghosts. When Annie (a recently murdered college student) comes to her for help, Harper tries to solve the case with her partner, Zander. That sparks fly when they get in the way of the investigation of the brand, new police officer!

The Prologue sure did hook my interest. How could it not. A grandpa saying goodbye to his granddaughter as he's leaving this life stung my heart.

The dialog between Harper and Sander was over the top, but I managed through it.

The story was filled with humor and sweet flirtations with lots of amateur sleuthing.

As much as I liked the storyline, (and even though some of it was funny), there was too much useless dialogue between Harper and Zander. So, I think I’ll leave it at book 1.
Great Story.

Pretty much the only thing I liked was that Harper already knows who she is and what she can do as I'm a quite over the sudden discovery of surprise powers/gifts.
My problem was that I didn't care for Harper or any of her gang really. I found them quite immature, especially Harper and the overall feel of the book was juvenile, very middle school drama. With a dose of TSTL thrown in for good measure.

It didn't help that the mystery wasn't much of mystery. The whodunit was clear the moment she met the person and by around 50% you could predict what was gonna happen the rest of the book.

Could've done with some editing. Noticed fair few typos, misspellings or sentences that got jumbled up like the writer was trying to paraphrase it mid-sentence, but failed to adjust the beginning of the sentence.

A nice, quicky, cosy paranormal mystery with a romance thrown in. I enjoyed this and it was just what I was looking for leading into the spooky season. I liked that Harper knew who she was and was comfortable with this from the beginning, and I really like the relationships. The mystery was enough to keep my interest.

Review:

Harper is a strong, smart woman who just happens to see ghosts. She is able to help restless spirits cross over, after helping them with their unfinished business. Sometimes that unfinished business involves finding whoever killed them, sometimes it involves finding their bodies. Whatever has to be done, Harper is willing to help them. So it is not surprising for Harper to find herself trying to figure out who murdered a young college student. She had better be successful or she may find herself one of those spirits.

The characters are well rounded and well developed. I so enjoyed the relationship between Harper and her best friend, Zander. Their bickering and banter had me laughing out loud throughout the entire book. You can tell how much they love each other, they are not afraid to call each other out when needed and they would do anything for each other. That is what I call best friends. I also really liked Jared, the police detective who is responsible to figure out the murder. Although he does not believe in ghosts, he is willing to use Harper’s abilities if it will help the case. The other characters in the book added to the story.

The authors is very talented in her descriptive writing. She did a great job in creating a small town setting, where everyone knows everybody’s business. The gossip line was in full swing throughout the book. I did think it was a bit far fetched that one of the detectives, Mel, was feeding the gossip mill, he would know better. The mystery was carried on well and there were plenty of suspects to consider. I had it narrowed down to two possible culprits before it was revealed at the end.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted paranormal cozy mystery. I was hooked just from reading the prologue and I really enjoyed the whole book. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

I have really been into the cozy mystery thing lately, and I really liked his book.. They are great for a fast, fun and entertaining read. Ill definitely be reading the rest of the series, and be checking out this authors other books.
Also was surprised that it takes place in Michigan, actually about half an hour from where I live.. which was pretty cool I think..
I loved Harper and Zanders friendship. I wish I had a bestest friend that I could banter back and forth like that.. and the love interest Jared was pretty cool too after he got his head out of his butt..
the mystery part I didn't figure out right away, I had an inkling but didn't think it was super obvious..
I love that Harper can see ghosts, and in fact made a business out of it. Along with her best friend and other people that also believe.. Harper and Jared did sort of catch feelings for each other kind of fast, but it totally felt like it fit the story, and I like them as a couple..

3.5 Stars! Ghostly Interests is my first book by Lily Harper Hart (LHH). It’s the first book in a series about a woman who can see and talk to ghosts.

Summary:
Harper Harlow is special. Everyone in Whisper Cove knows that she claims to see and talk to ghosts. Some even believe it. As for Harper, she’s confident in her gifts, and doesn’t hide who she is. Since not everyone feels the same and she’s got her lifelong best friend soulmate for support, she’s not concerned with romantic relationships. That is, she’s not until Detective Jared Monroe moves to town. Jared can’t believe his second day on the job includes a murder of a young girl. It’s not at all what he was expecting of the small, somewhat sleepy town. Meeting Harper isn’t expected either. Jared is intrigued by the beautiful blonde, but he’s not looking for a relationship and he doesn’t believe in ghosts. It seems neither can escape the other after Harper happens across the ghost that belongs to Jared’s dead woman. Each will use their own means of investigation, but any clues they find are destined to lead to the same place. Can Jared and Harper pool their resources and learn to work together to find a killer? What happens when continued interaction betrays a connection neither seem willing to let go?

*************************
LHH has an extensive bibliography, especially since she also writes under the pen-name Amanda M. Lee. Ghostly Interests is my first time reading either pen-name, although I’ve had my eye on several books from each. I chose this book because I liked the idea of a mystery involving ghosts. It reminds me of the tv show, The Ghost Whisperer, which I loved. I liked this book okay, but I think it had the potential to be a lot more. Harper was a pretty cool heroine, but it bothered me that she was sometimes portrayed as being older than she was. I thought she was funny, loyal, loved hard, and had a good heart. She was only in her late twenties, though, worked with a twenty-five and twenty-one year old, and it seemed her and Zander watched plenty of modern tv. It boggles the mind how some of the terminology seemed to take her off guard or confused her when talking to the college students. I did love the ghost aspect. I just wanted more. I wanted to see Harper utilize her skills more, and for them to be a bigger part of the investigation. Jared was also just okay. He doesn’t seem to have a tragic past or great loss or anything, so he was pretty straight forward. I liked his blunt honesty, but didn’t really see him as a black and white kind of guy. He believed in Harper too quickly for me to believe that. Overall, it was an interesting read. I enjoyed the storyline despite wanting more ghost stuff, and guessing who the killer was pretty early on. The one thing I did love was the side characters. Especially Zander. The banter and obvious closeness between them was sweet and funny. I loved it. The addition of Harper’s crazy parents and the unseen, gossipy town added to the humor and endearing quirkiness of the story. As for the romance, I adore my cozies to have an element of it, but at points it felt their togetherness happened extremely fast. It was also a little overly mushy at times. While I wouldn’t want there to be too much conflict, I would have liked a more gradual relationship even if their connection was apparent right away. Despite the issues I’ve mentioned, this book still entertained me and I’m intrigued about what Harper will get up to next. ♡
