Ace knows Clyde’s a werewolf. He ALSO knows Clyde’s rut is right around the corner. They’ve been circling one another for years, and Ace is done waiting for his cautious best friend to make a move. So, with a little help from a petty witch, he procures some questionable potions to help him handle Clyde’s yearly rut under the full moon. He’s got everything he needs.
Probably. Most likely.
One secluded campsite, one Mr. Safety werewolf running out of safety protocols, and one human who knows exactly which protocols he planned on breaking. Ace has always wanted to know what would happen once Clyde stopped holding back. Now he’s going to find out.
The only question is whether Clyde will survive Ace.
Series overview Outwitting Your Paranormal follows a different couple in each interconnected novella, all loosely linked by Kain, a petty, nosy witch who has machinations of his own. While the series keeps its chaotic paranormal-romance tone and guaranteed HEAs, the tropes, stakes, and content warnings vary from book to book.
What do you do when you're in love with your best friend who happens to be a werewolf? Go to a witch, procure some potions, take your best friend camping in the middle of the woods and take his rut of course!
Honestly, Ace's approach to finally getting together with his best friend Clyde might be slightly unhinged, but I was HERE FOR IT. 😂 These two have been dancing around their feelings for so long, and watching that friendship finally turn into something more was absolutely everything.
Ace is such a fun character. He knows exactly what he wants, and once he decides he's going after Clyde, there is apparently no stopping him. The fact that he's been tracking Clydes' moon cycles with spreadsheets had me HOWLING. 😂 His level of preparation is honestly impressive. Ridiculous but impressive 😂
Clyde is such a fantastic character because he's not just the hot werewolf at the centre of Ace's plans. He is Ace's best friend, his safe person, and someone who has clearly become so much more important to Ace than either of them has been willing to admit. I loved getting to see the softer side of Clyde underneath the werewolf instincts and all that delicious tension.
And Clyde has so much to contend with. He's a werewolf, he's dealing with his rut, and on top of that he's suddenly having to deal with Ace wanting to take their relationship somewhere neither of them can really pretend is just friendship anymore.
This was fun, spicy, adorable and completely addictive, but above everything else, I loved Ace and Clyde. Give me best friends with years of history, mutual pining and a whole lot of unresolved sexual tension, and I am absolutely going to devour it. 😂🔥
And in the words of Verena themselves "Please do not follow Ace's methods for how to bag a baddie. Don't lure your friends, crushes, or potential lovers into the woods under false pretenses so you can confront them about secretly being a werewolf. Not every werewolf is as sweet as Clyde. Some might eat you."
Such wise words 😂💕 Cant wait for more in the series!!
I am reviewing an advance reader copy of this book provided by the author. My opinions and thoughts are my own and given freely! Thank you to the publish and Verena for sharing this story.
Camping for Keeps is a novella beginning a series of interconnected books. Each story will feature a different couple, connected through a Witch and his Demon. The first book follows Ace and Clyde, two long-time friends and roommates. Clyde has been keeping the fact that he is a werewolf a secret, but not a very good one as Ace has figured it out. Ace decides to take their relationship into his own hands by setting up a camping trip during Clyde's yearly rut.
First off, I love these two guys. Their banter is so realistic and funny. Reading this I saw that these guys were truly two halves of a whole idiot when together and it is perfection. While Ace may have not made the best decision I enjoyed how they both handled the situation. It was refreshing to not have a dramatic fall out, but instead two adults having a conversation about their mistakes, the risks and how to move forward. I also support gay rights and wrongs, and Ace is just too precious to stay mad at.
The spice is well written and focuses on primal play and typical tropes you see with shifters. The trigger page did a great job explaining everything before hand. While reading the story, you could really feel the shared history these two had as they were together. The humor shared while being intimate added so much depth to who they are and made their relationship seem much more realistic.
My only wish for this story was for more world-building. I know there will be more stories added, but there were somethings mentioned that felt like I was supposed already supposed to know what it was. Hopefully the upcoming books help expand and flesh out some of the information we were given.
This story is a nice, quick read. I see a lot of potential here with how the author writes the characters. Overall, I'm excited to see what future stories in this series bring and feel like things will only get better as it progresses.

This was such a cute, steamy, funny story. Ace is such a menace. In love with his best friend, who is a werewolf, for years decides to take things into his owe hand to move their relationship to the next level. Clyde thought his true nature was hidden from his adrenaline junkie best friend only to be lured into the woods for a camping trip to under false pretenses. Ace, knew all along what his friend was but loved him always, planned said camping trip during his rut to finally show Clyde how much he loves him. Three days and nights full of being hunted down in the woods which turned into some of the most steamy sexy both of them have had finally shed the light on how much both of them have wanted this all along.
Funny, sexy, and heartwarming with a happily ever after.
This book is a must read. Cannot wait to read book 2!!
A friend told me "Ace is a menace" and there is no better word to desceibe him. Ace has been in love with Clyde, his best friend, for years. They have known each other since they were kids and Clyde's family is practically Ace's family too. They do everything together. Well, not everything, because Ace has discovered Clyde's secret. He is a werewolf and once a year he has a rut. And what would any responsible friend-want-to-be-boyfriend do? Don't ask Clyde, he is reckless and his idea of clarifying their situation is ambush his best friend to go through his rut with him in the middle of nowhere. Ha! Menace!
This book is pure fun and hotness with a backgrojnd of sweetness and companionship. It is a great light read ñ perfect for spooky season or any time you need to forget about anything complicated and dive in pure joy.
I will be a 100% reading whatever the author comes with next.
“I was a wild thing lost to him now. I was his wild thing.”
Camping for Keeps is a sexy, supernatural novella that hosts a punk, sunshine brat and a were-grump ⛓️🐺
Not to mention, a witch who’s in the middle of some petty foreplay with an incubus 🧙🏼♂️😈
Wild stuff going on here, folks.
You wanna get technical? This is friends-to-lovers. You wanna get real? This is idiots-to-lovers. Ace and Clyde share approximately 1 (one) braincell and it sometimes takes vacation to make room for all the horniness festering between them. And when I say ‘horniness’, I mean it. A forklift couldn’t have separated these two dummies from their woodland rendezvous 🌲🏕️
The spice is HOT 🔥 and the story itself is interesting. It’s also written well. I can tell the author put effort into editing. I’m curious to see how the rest of the series will go.
I would like to thank the author, Verena Roan, for the privilege of reading and reviewing this advanced reader copy.
Camping for Keeps is both funny, and so steamy and spicy! I truly enjoyed reading this book and stepping into Clyde and Ace's first encounter as lovers. Camping with your best friend, while setting it up during their most vulnerable time is a recipe for either disaster or some of the best sex of their lives. There is snarky banter, witchy magic and two friends finding their footing in their new chapter of life. I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to all my spicy shifter loving friends!
Absolutely devoured this fun novella! Crazy, chaotic Ace and sweet, gentle Clyde stole my heart. I love the fact that despite the size of the book, Verena was able to flesh out the characters and the world in a way that almost seems impossible. I can't wait to read the rest of the unhinged stories in the series! ❤️
A novella setting up a series of paranormal/human novellas. This one has a werewolf, and it’s light and fun and sweet with some intense sexual content. Im really intrigued about the through line of witches-can’t wait to read more about THAT drama.
I received an arc for this novella. This was fun and set the series up as it left me wanting more. I’m excited to see the new characters and the overlapping characters we have already met.
Werewolf and a human, best friends to lovers, and 3 days of spicy scenes in the woods? A good time was had by all! Fun novella, and I’d be interested to read more in the series.
