25 Oct 2015 :
Baru baca vol.1~

Gambar : 6.5 bintang (menjebol standar 5☆)
Cerita : 4.5 bintang

Aku belum pernah baca novelnya~ jadi mari kita bahas cerita komik ini aja ya (^,^)/
Ceritanya keren! *udahituaja* (^,,,^)v

Gambarnya mempesona banget~ apalagi pas bagian pergulatan batin Jean...rasanya sangat "Rooaarrr!!" begitu (^,^)
____________

Edited 10 Oct 2017 :
Setelah tamat di vol.8... rasa-rasanya aku ga bakalan suka dengan novelnya, sama seperti aku ga begitu klik dengan Hunchback of Notre-Dame (^///^;)>

Tapi! (✧ω✧) Keuntungan baca komik ini adalah pesona gambarnya~ ❤
Semua momen pergulatan batin terlihat indah sekaligus bikin nyesek.

“Society cares nothing for the unfortunates outside it. Society turns away from our struggles, from the weight we bear upholding it. We who have nothing… are abandoned by those with everything.”

Les Misérables, vol. 1, begins Takahiro Arai's beautifully drawn and written manga adaptation of Victor Hugo's classic novel Les Misérables. This volume focuses on Jean Valjean's life: it begins with him as a young man, trying his best to support his family, and goes on to detail his brutal time in prison and what happens to him when he is released and he runs into a Bishop with a truly good heart.

I was really impressed by this volume. Les Misérables is my favorite novel of all time and I was so happy to see how well this manga captured not just the heart and soul of the characters, but also the novel itself. Les Misérables is a scathing, empathetic, raw and honest depiction of the gruelling life of the poor and the downtrodden of 19th century France, and in this volume alone, Takahiro Arai captured the various layers of injustice in this time and country so well. The images of the pyramid of society that Valjean imagines, the corruption and greed that runs the Church and so many of its representatives, the easy happy life we see the rich lead why our main characters crawl after scraps of human dignity and empathy... So good. I truly feel like this volume honoured what Hugo's novel is all about and captured it for a new audience in a completely new way.

Valjean is a fantastic character and I absolutely loved the way his descent into cruelty, hatred and anger was depicted in this volume. Getting to see him before his time in prison was a nice addition, as it makes everything that happens to him hit all the more painfully. The imagery of the beast within him that occasionally takes control, his inner monologue and his vividly portrayed emotions were so well done, so chilling. The art was wonderful and so emotive. I cannot wait to see how his arc is done in the future volumes and whether the beast imagery will continue.

The other main character in this volume is Bishop Bienvenu for whom I have always had such a soft spot. I am a sucker for characters who manage to hold on to their goodness and kindness in a cruel world, and Bienvenu really is a walking personification of a light in the dark. He is a true man of God, truly kind and compassionate, and I have always vibed with that. It's intriguing how while, in this book and thus in this manga, the church is critiqued quite harshly (and rightly so), it is also shown that not all the people who serve the Church are rotten to their cores. The institution might be corrupt, but individuals can be good. Bienvenu had some wonderful quotes, such as: "You're a soul in need. Be you king, commoner or criminal... It matters not to me." This one also moved me a lot: “None shall be turned away. Don’t fret. People must love one another. There’s no place for fear or doubt.” I also enjoyed the way he was drawn: he had such a soft, warm, kind vibe to him, as he should.

I am so, so glad I ended up finding out about this manga. I am always ready to experience new versions of this story, one of my favorite stories of all time, and boy am I glad to have found what seems to be one of the best new takes on it I have ever seen. Hopefully this series continues to dazzle me in the next seven volumes.

A parte queste piccolezze è meraviglioso

Kudos for the manga artist who successfully drew one of the finest conflict of self-conscience I have read in manga for years. By focusing to character development instead of course of events, I can see now why Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables" is a classic. Jean Valjean, you have been redeemed. Now go forth and do kindess towards other miserable people.

Manga adaptasi dari karya klasik Victor Hugo. Penggambarannya lumayan baik, namun dibeberapa bagian kadang terlampau berlebihan atau over expose.
