Rate this book
Second book in the Edmonton Enforcers Hockey Series.

He thought hockey was his entire life, until he met her.

Though he’s determined to stay focused on his career, Owen can’t turn a blind eye to an opportunity to get the upper hand over his hockey rival. With The Battle of Alberta looming, Owen can’t afford ‘real dating’ as a distraction, but Melissa’s strong personality fits his own. When securing his legacy means leaving Edmonton at the end of the hockey season, Owen’s secret is exposed. In an act of vengeance, Owen suffers a career-ending injury and requires more help than he’s ever accepted before.

Hatred for hockey players runs deep ever since Melissa’s stalker ex made it to the League. But when the teacher finds herself in trouble, Owen and his guys come to her rescue. She reluctantly falls for Edmonton Enforcer’s top defenseman despite his surly hockey fixation. When Melissa finally accepts the man she’s ready to settle down with, she’s faced with an impossible choice. Unwilling to leave him during his darkest moment, Melissa struggles to overcome his secret and forgive him.

Can their relationship survive forced career changes, devastating injuries, relocation and tangled relationships with their friends and siblings? Or will they never be able to recover from rock bottom?

Rcvd an ARC from the author.

OMG I loved this book! The witty sarcastic banter between the FMC and MMC! This story made me LOL and cry.

We meet teacher Melissa who works with Collins from the 1st book. She loves hocket but hates everything to do with the sport because of her ex Ethan. He has been stalking and sending her red gifts for years and no one did anything about it. What's worse is that now he is in Calgary and its too close. We meet NHLer Owen whose main focus is hockey. He has plans...win the Cup, retire and coach hockey back in Colorado. None of his plans include a relationship. One night out with friends Owen learns that Mel is Ethans ex and he hates that guy. Leith comes up with a plan that Owen and Melissa should fake date to piss Ethan off. WTH! But it gets worse when Mel gets texts from a number of pictures of her apartment...Ethan is in her home and she freezes. They all go to her place to see the damage and Owen states she is staying with him. Owen and Melissa are now roommates for the foreseeable future and they agree to fake date to get Ethan off her back. Whats the worst thing that can happen? Mel gets a touch of thr feelers and Owen cant be in a relationship. There is so much drama and sarcasm between the two. There are no better people suited for one another bc they aren't scared of each other as others are. Things go from bad to perpetually worse and somebody is bound to get hurt.

The secondary characters are hilarious which brings the humour to this story. Leith, Sloane, Amelia and Aaron bring the die hard family and friendships that will alwsys have your back in times of need.

I was excited to start book 2 in the Edmonton Enforcers series. I love how protective Owen was over Melissa right from the go (I think he was even shocked) and felt the urge to keep her safe from her crazy ex.

Every supporting character has their own story moving alongside the main story and I enjoyed learning more about each of them too. Can’t wait to read slowness book and get more of a background on her 👀👀

The spice was spicing! I also really enjoyed that their personalities were more Black cat/black cat and not all sweet and sugary. It made it seem more authentic to who the characters are.

Can’t wait for book 3!!

Favorite quote:

“Come for me, Angel.” His deep whisper is an order and a plea wrapped in one.

With the way he swirls his tongue around? That’s an outright beg.

“Make me.” Literally.

Uhhmmm okay 🥵🥵

I absolutely loved all the banter between Melissa and Owen, and how they constantly showed up for one another. This book paid so many homages to Edmonton, and I loved it so much. I loved how protective Owen was of Melissa with her ex and how Melissa stood beside Owen when he needed it. These two were so much fun, and I can’t wait to read about Amelia and Aaron next!

Please review the content warnings - DV/SA/Stalking are major themes of this story and characters.

These reviews are the ones that break my heart when I’m ARC Reading. Yes some of the character situations in this are heartbreaking, but also I just really want to love this author and I’m not sure if she’s the perfect match for me. C.E. shares the reality of teaching, parenting and still writing in her spare time (not sure how she makes that happen) with her readers. I 100% respect that she is putting in the effort and hard work to share her characters. I love finding brave Alberta Indie Authors and I want to shout about all of them to the world.

This is difficult for me to explain because I think many readers will appreciate C.E.’s change of pace and style.

I found myself checking to see if the story was ending because the couple would hit a moment that I felt was a nice pause before the next book, just to find I wasn’t even close. Often it’s the admission of real feelings that drives a fake dating romance (which I love), but looking back that wasn’t actually the main plot driver for this couple and maybe that’s why I felt a bit off.

There are so many subplots and couples - not just like 2/3 veteran besties or like a group chat, but a whole bunch of players across the team all have fairly involved storylines. So really we see multiple relationships develop during this novel, which isn’t a bad thing, but isn’t super typical if they’re expected to have their own book.

I don’t want this to sound like it was poor writing, I still really enjoyed the character personalities - I LOVED grumpy Owen and Melissa was definitely his match. The bromance/brotherhood with Shaw was fantastic. Sloane is a badass SURVIVOR and I loved that mutual understanding she had with Mel. Luke is still a little mysterious that makes me want to learn more, I think Novak could be a great addition in following books.

This pair opened up the conversation to more spicy exploration and hints for other characters, but I still wouldn’t say it’s spice heavy. There are explicit scenes and discussions, but Owen and Mel spend most of their time jarring outside the bedroom and at team events.

10 stars for the mental health rep and discussions around that.

Thank you to Caitlin for the advanced copy, I wasn’t expecting it, but it was a great surprise 💜💜

⭐️ 5/5 stars | ARC Review

Grumpy x grumpier, hockey romance, and a couple who had me kicking my feet from the very beginning. 💚

The second book in the Edmonton Enforcers series, and I am so thankful to have received an ARC. I’ve been looking forward to this one so much, especially with it being a local series that holds a special place in my heart.

Owen and Melissa are EVERYTHING. The banter, the sass, the spice… I loved it all. Melissa is strong, independent, knows exactly who she is and what she wants, and never hesitates to call Owen out on his feelings. No unnecessary miscommunication here from her, just a woman who knows what she wants and goes after it.

Owen is the grumpy, older hockey player who has his life planned down to the last detail. Nothing is supposed to throw him off course. Until Melissa. What starts as a plan to protect her from her stalker ex by fake dating, quickly turns into something neither of them can control, and watching them fall and over come their own issues was, chefs kiss.

C.E. Boyle has such a way of building this world and creating characters you genuinely adore. I laughed, kicked my feet, and had my heart racing when everything came crashing down. I also loved getting more glimpses into our other couples and the little breadcrumbs left for future books. I’m already impatiently waiting for the next one! 😭💚

And that reminder that the comeback is always better than the setback? YES. Every HEA leaves me giddy, and this one was no exception.

A 5-star read, and one I’ve already convinced friends in both Canada and the US to add to their Kindles! If you love hockey romance, do yourself a favour and add this to your TBR. 🏒💚

Even more excited to celebrate C.E. Boyle and another successful release at the local event. 👑

📕The Villain by C E Boyle
Series/standalone: 2nd book in series

Rating: ❤️ ❤️ .5 // 🌶️

📚 Tropes: Grumpy x Grumpy // Forced Proximity // Fake Dating

🎶Swiftie Feels: I Can Fix Him 🤍
They shake their Heads saying “God Help her”
When I tell them he’s my man

❤️💔 The Good and The Bad:
Melissa is a teacher who hates hockey players and everything they stand for, thanks to an abusive ex boyfriend. However, she is thrust into the world of NHL thanks to her coworker Collins (tha FMC from Edmonton Enforcers #1). In a twist of events, the same night Melissa gets a forced introduction to the Edmonton Enforcers, she also has her ex boyfriend (from the rival Calgary NHL Team) break into her house. This provides a meet cue for her and the surly defenseman Owen, who volunteers to be her fake boyfriend to protect her from Ethan.
All this happens in the span of 2 chapters. Brooky of this, the book feels like it’s starting from halfway through. There is sadly a real lack of lead up to their relationship, which is thrust upon them and agreed upon within the first few chapters. While the characters are both “grouchy”, the dual POV negates any real stakes in the relationship, as we know they are both falling from the start, and makes the plot monotone in nature. I usually like grouchy characters, but that seemed to be their entire personality. It also annoyed me that they kept down talking the main characters from the first book.

The saving grace is the side characters. Aaron and Leith’s stories were the main reason I didn’t DNF this book. Leith was my favourite character from book one, and he added some greatly needed Golden Retriever positive energy to the dull grey of the two main characters. Aaron had the most character development, which is crazy with him being a minor side character. However, I am very nervous as it is said that book three will be Aaron’s book, and their relationship has already been built and established throughout this book.

✨My Review:

Well, this series just keeps getting better and I’m officially hooked! Give me hockey players, romance, chemistry, and ALL the spice, and I’m one happy reader! 🥵❤️

This book was such an entertaining read, and I absolutely loved it! C.E. Boyle really knows how to deliver a hockey romance that pulls you in and keeps you invested. Between the hockey atmosphere, the romance, the tension, and all those deliciously spicy moments, there was so much to love. I found myself completely wrapped up in the story, and I honestly didn’t want it to end.

And let’s talk about the Edmonton connection! As a Calgary girl, I have to admit there’s something extra fun about reading a romance centred around Edmonton hockey players. 😂🏒 I’m always going to have my Calgary pride, but I can put the rivalry aside for a good hockey romance!

I love when a series gives you characters and a world that make you want to keep coming back for more, and this one has absolutely done that for me. It’s the kind of series that makes you want to immediately pick up the next book because you’re not ready to leave that hockey world behind.

✨Tropes:

RELEASED TODAY!! If you’re a fan of hockey romance, swoony moments, plenty of chemistry, and an unapologetically spicy storyline, you definitely need this series on your TBR!

C.E. Boyle, you’ve got my attention, and I’m ready for more! ❤️

Thank you CE Boyle for this ARC! I love seeing authors’ visions for what the NHL could be like if we held players and the system accountable. Yes, I’m looking at you Vegas and Edmonton… Anyway, I think this book was more enjoyable than The Ledger (book 1). I love that we dive deeper into the characters’ dynamics and this is organized well.

Melissa and Owen are such a refreshing change from regular romance couples. Both are stubborn, sharp, stern, and have lots of thick walls built up. I loved seeing how they both learned to trust and learning to build a good foundation for a relationship. While these characters have their miscommunication moments (hey, no one’s perfect!), I REALLY enjoyed seeing how they overcame their challenges (personally and with each other) and seeing how these characters build and rebuild trust. CE Boyle set this storyline up very well.

Owen is a very inspiring MMC!! No spoilers, but CE Boyle threw it ALL at him and then showed us what it means to have humility, perseverance, emotional endurance, and a little faith in yourself. I thoroughly enjoyed this character arc and the impacts of it are still lingering with me. I’m not ashamed to admit that I shed a tear.

What I love about this read:
👩🏻‍🏫 She’s a scary grade 6 teacher
🏒 He’s a grumpy defenseman
🖤 MCs both in their 30s
🎙️TONS of real NHL story references
❤️‍🔥 Haters to lovers
🫱🏼‍🫲🏽 Fake dating
👩🏻‍❤️‍👨🏻 No third-act breakups!
🔥Slow burn, fiery chemistry
🫂 Found family

I loved book one of the Edmonton Enforcers series and absolutely gobbled it up, so naturally, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on book two! I even begged C.E. Boyle for an ARC, and she was SO sweet and actually sent me one!

I had so much fun with this read, too! The local Edmonton references make this series extra fun, especially if you’re from Alberta. I do think, though, that if you’ve never been to Edmonton, some of the very specific local details might go over your head. The Windy City series is a great comparison here. Even though I’ve never been to Chicago, I still felt immersed in the setting without needing to know the city personally. That was a bit different for me with this series.

I did feel like some of the more specific details were setting the stage for future books, I think a PWHL spinoff, but at times, the setup felt a little more forced than seamless. No shade at all, just some constructive feedback because I genuinely love seeing a local author build out this world!

I also have to admit that after reading the God tier Windy City series this year, it’s hard not to compare every sports romance to it. Nothing has quite measured up for me yet, and this series definitely has a more Alberta-coded feel to the writing.

That said, I had a great time with this one, loved supporting a local author, and am excited to see more from the Edmonton Enforcers! 🏒❤️

I just love these two! I’ve wanted their book since the very first one, and I definitely wasn’t disappointed!

Just like in the first book, the FMC is a teacher, and as a teacher myself, I love reading about characters who share my profession. It was so much fun to read!

Melissa is such a fierce and independent woman. I love how she’s written because, despite everything she’s been through, she stays strong and continues to fight for herself. She doesn’t need a man to protect her, but she feels safe enough to let someone stand by her and be there for her. I really loved that about her!

Owen is such a big teddy bear! Even if he loves to grunt, he’s genuinely a good man who wants to protect the people he loves. I have to admit that I was really disappointed by his reaction at one point, but he did his groveling, so all is forgiven!

I loved watching their relationship grow little by little. Their connection develops naturally, and it was so good to see them slowly find their way to each other.

One of the things I love most about this series is seeing all the players supporting one another and watching them fall in love, too. Even though the main focus is on the central couple, I really enjoy getting those little moments with the rest of the team.

And Mel’s best friend? She’s already one of my favorite characters, and I absolutely can’t wait to discover her story!

I’m so excited to read the next book!

Just finished the ARC and OMG! I’m both sad that it’s over and happy that I finally got to read it and experience Owen and Melissa’s story. THANK YOU C.E. Boyle for the ARC!

The banter between Owen and Melissa is some of the best I’ve ever read. But their softer sides showed too which was just so good. The way Owen protected Melissa from the very beginning to the end. You never questioned if these 2 loved each other.

There are some heavy topics in this book that I think were handled so fantastically well. The villain (haha) of this book was written so well I actually hate the character. There were a few points throughout that got to me but one part in particular absolutely GUTTED me. Which is a first. Even still I absolutely LOVED this book.

There were a few “plot twists” for other characters that I did not see coming but I’m here for it.
Leith is still my favorite and to get a few chapters from his point of view and have him so much in this book was just the cherry on top for me.

This is book two of the Edmonton Enforcers hockey series. There is certainly nostalgia reading about all the local landmarks and the real-life rivalry between Edmonton and Calgary. In book one we meet Collins, a student teacher who befriends Melissa, a teacher at the same school. Because of negative history with a hockey player, Melissa is not a fan of the sport or of the players. However, when her past comes back to cause trouble, its the protective nature of defensemen, Owen Dobs, that changes everything for her.

I have to say that I didn't love Melissa's snarky attitude or lack of humility. I'm all for a little attitude and challenge in a relationship, but I found her downright nasty sometimes. Admitting your wrong and forgiveness are traits Owen portrayed so hopefully Melissa gets them with age and experience. There is a lot happening in this book and I suspect the next story will run parallel to this one. As a new and self-published author, C.E. Boyle is showing that it is possible to write what you love. Solid 3.5 to 4 stars.

This is my second hockey/ sports romance(the first being The Ledger) and I am hooked!
The FMC, Melissa, is so sassy and doesnt take any bs from anyone. Even with that tho, she is super loving and caring. She is absolutely someone I'd want as a friend
The MMC, Owen, is more like your typical grumpy jock with a soft spot for that one woman. Yet the way he listens to his woman, protects her and can handle her attitude with a smile is amazing and hilarious!
I love that this story touches on some major issues as well and also shows just how far removed people with money can be from the rest of society. It shows how trauma is handled differently. It shows how the person you see on media isn't always who they actually are. And it let's you see these famous people(even if they're fictional) as real people with dreams, goals, ups, downs, hardships and as humans.
This is absolutely a series I will keep reading and supporting! I can't wait to see the next book!

ARC REVIEW

Melissa and Owen's relationship starts fake but ends up being the most swoonworthy relationship. Melissa is blunt and mean while Owen is grumpy and direct. Together these two give the kind of love they seek while not giving up the banter. I enjoyed seeing how they both overcome their challenges as a couple and individually.

Melissa's character is refreshing as an FMC; she's relatable in that she cusses, she's a ball breaker and holds everyone including herself accountable.

This series is fantastic because of the interconnected friendships/found family. It makes it feel like you are part of the group.

If you are a local to Edmonton, you will appreciate C.E. Boyle's sassy comments about the city like the construction, drivers, etc. 🤣

Thank you so much to C.E. Boyle for the opportunity to read The Villain as an ARC! 💚 I was so excited to get to read this book after reading her book The Ledger (The first book in the Series) and loving it and The Villain did not disappoint! You will love it💚

I absolutely loved the plot and the characters. The story pulled me in, and I found myself getting invested in everything happening along the way. 🥹😂😭

I loved getting to experience this story, and I’m so grateful I had the chance to read it early. If you’re looking for a book that will make you laugh, cry, and feel deeply connected to the characters, The Villain is definitely one to add to your TBR! 📚💚

ARC REVIEW

Another great read from an Edmonton local author! ❤️

This one took me a little longer to get into compared to the first book, but once I was hooked, it was such an easy and enjoyable read. I loved how the author tackled some really important and difficult topics surrounding Canadian hockey and schools today, while still keeping the story engaging and easy to follow.

Melissa and Owen had amazing chemistry, plenty of banter, spice, and so much loyalty to each other. I also loved how this story tied in with the first book. The friendships and family dynamics added so much to the storyline and made everything feel that much more wholesome.

Another great addition to the series, and I’m definitely looking forward to what’s next! ❤️

**ARC Reader review

Owen is a grumpy protector. Melissa is a sassy black cat. Together, they challenge each other, they get under each other’s skin, and want to see who can rile the other more. Instead of calling this The Villain perhaps it should have been Leith’s Bad Idea 😂, though turns out it was a pretty spectacular idea.
I loved how they pushed each other. How we learn more about Sloane and Amelia. I cannot wait to read about Aaron and Amelia and Sloane and Leith. Sloane will put him through his paces for sure.
Owen really struggles after he’s injured. But he never loses who he is at his core. I might have yelled at the author at the chapter before he was injured. She’s an evil genius.
I absolutely recommend this book and look forward to the next when it comes.

Book 2 of the Edmonton Enforcers ARC Read

Owen and Melissa's story began at the end of The Ledger and continues here. If you haven't read it, I would recommend you do.

The story has so many elements that keep you turning the pages. Moody Dobs and the terrifying grade six teacher Melissa's fake dating scheme begins to help protect and piss off her ex.

The chemistry with these two is instant as their personalities compliment each other in the funniest way!

The snark. The banter. The spice between these two is epic. And the way Melissa calls Owen out so early about it not being fake is chef's kiss!

Highly recommend the read, and cannot wait for Book 3.

ARC REVIEW:: I knew going in to this I was already going to love it and honestly the found family in this book was everything I was hoping it to be. I love a good friend group and this one literally made me feel like I was a part it. Owen is a grumpy, protective hockey player who is basically the perfect book boyfriend, but Melissa completely stole the show. She’s the ultimate black cat with so much attitude and I’ve never related to a character more in my life 🤣 Seeing her handle the other men and match wits was so fun. Easy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ If you love a sports romance with an incredible friend group and great spice, add this to your TBR.

I was lucky enough to ARC read The Villain by C.E. Boyle, and it did not disappoint!

It’s been wonderful watching C.E. Boyle’s writing grow and mature. There’s something so special about seeing our indie authors develop their craft!

This story follows a grumpy hockey player and a badass middle school teacher who isn’t afraid to speak her mind. I loved their character development, chemistry, and witty banter!

It was so refreshing to have a strong FMC who stands up for herself and her friends, challenges her MMC, and gives as good as she gets!

Melissa and Owen were such a fun couple to read about! The banter between them had me smiling, and the fake dating and forced proximity made everything even better. Owen being protective of Melissa while insisting he didn’t want a relationship was very much giving “sir, be serious” 😂. I also appreciated how they both showed up for each other when things got tough. Their chemistry felt natural, the spice delivered, and their stubborn personalities made their relationship feel genuine. Now I’m ready for Amelia and Aaron because I need to know what’s going on there! 👀

Hockey Happiness

I enjoyed book one of this series, The Ledger. I absolutely love The Villain. Melissa & Owen have absolute sparks. I really love the female relationships. I love that Melissa's career gets equal billing with Owen's. There are romance books where the main character plays hockey. Then there are romance books about hockey players, such as this one. If you're not a hockey fan, you might be after this book. It covers some heavy topics with sensitivity and care. I'm really excited for the rest of the series.

If you’re a big fan of hockey romance books, this one is for you! It is such an amazing read, so many laughs but also some very heart warming moments too!

If you love grumpy x black cat trope, you will absolutely love the FMC and MMC. The sassy feisty FMC who loves so hard is top tier, and the MMC who supports her, is grumpy but also has a special spot for her, *chef kiss*

Highly recommend picking up this book! 🩷

Thank you very much @C.E. Boyle for including me in the ARC Team!
This was a really fun and girly read, loved the characters, how the different personalities click together, the banter and even the guessing. There were a few places I thought that we reached the peak and then BAM there it is, which was nice.
The end of the book spoiled it for me some what, getting to experience some of the other characters "endings" but I think I'm most exited about Tysons story.

I loved reading Melissa and Owen’s story. It was such a fun read full of banter and growth. It was one that I couldn’t put down and I just wanted to know more of what’s happening.

Melissa is a very fun character to come across and very real, I loved her reactions. I loved how she got Owen to open up and show the different layers, and how he wanted to protect her from the very beginning.

Thank you so much to C.E. Boyle for making me a member of her ARC team for this book!

This book was a very fun read, that had moments of stress, and emotion, and anger from me on behalf of the characters.

I also loved that it’s set in my home province! Getting that 'Battle of Alberta' in a hockey romance was honestly just an extra cherry on top of how much I enjoyed this story.

A fantastic read with the main characters sharing so many emotional journeys, getting to the point of happiness. I loved how it wasn't as straight forward as getting together when the ex was an issue, but the sarcasm, wit and requirement to build trust continued throughout. The side characters have their own stories on the go as well and was an amazing read.

I really liked how Melissa's rough exterior didn't need to be "fixed" by her love interest. Owen was equally as grumpy!

Thank you to CE Boyle for the ARC!
