Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
More Lee/Kirby magic from the foundational years of Marvel comics. This is the first 'definitive' fight between H/T - and according to what I have read uncle Stan got quite a few 'nasty' letters from T fans! I still think that T has superior fighting skills (boxing, wrestling and football) that should make the fights much closer. This book is getting harder and harder to find above CGC 6.0.
I give this reading the highest possible rating. If you enjoy the movies featuring the Hulk, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Thor, Captain America, Spiderman & so-oooo many other characters.. then you should take delight in this story. Along with other Marvel super heroes, from the 1960's. For this is the foundation of the Marvel Universe. The films are merely modern adaptions to the book(s) now available, at a fraction of the cost to buy an original issue, at your local comic book store.
The foundation of the successful Hollywood adaptations of Marvel Superheroes begins here. Superman and Bat-Man are older, but the most innovation, creativity & personification of characters lies in this body of work. In this one issue, we see a superhero get sick & the Thing hopelessly outmatched but determined to go down fighting! This issue is a classic example of the kind of story telling that put Marvel on the map. It's often imitated but has never been duplicated!!! The Thing is shoved into a manhole & responds by using underground electric wires to give the Hulk a big shock!! Later creative teams never learned how to add these elements into their stories. Nor do you really see the scripted loser really offer a genuine challenge. But, not in this story!!! The Thing concedes defeat & basically says, "Let's try that again!!!"
Stan Lee & Jack Kirby (the creative team that created the Marvel Universe) are doing what they do & did best. And that is to put their heroes up against overwhelming odds and let them figure out a way to overcome the odds and survive the threat! That's a formula for great storytelling & action! This story does NOT disappoint! For action lovers, it's a real treat! Enjoy!!!
The Hulk vs. The Thing! The rest of the Fantastic Four are out of action and it is up to The Thing to stop Hulk in his rampage. This comic was a good setup for a huge smack down between two of the strongest characters (in the 60's). I would recommend you reading the Avengers #3 (which I have not done) before reading this as the events in that comic bleed into this one (and the next!)
If you wondered what happened to the Hulk..when he left the Avengers (#3)..here he is!! He's stomping around not so happy he was replaced by Cap.America on the Avengers roster. So rematch between The Thing and Hulk..their first meeting in FF #12.
Reed is sick! Johnny and Sue tap out in 2.2 seconds! Only The Thing remains to defeat the hulk before the military resorts to nuking NYC! Read for crossover shenanigans. Essential for hulk & FF completionists.
This is what made the silver age of Marvel great. A shared universe where all the characters crossed over into each others titles. At the time this was the biggest battle in comic book history. With the great Jack Kirby drawing it and Stan with the dialogue. Of course Stan couldn’t even remember the Hulk’s name. He was Bob Banner this issue instead of Bruce Banner. How could Stan forget the name he created? He rectified it by renaming him Robert Bruce Banner. This issue was a classic and remains that way today.
Another great story, Lee and Kirby, brilliant...one of the best Thing vs Hulk battles...I think it's funny that Hulk and Banner both refer to himself as Bob.
One of the best comic book stories I’ve ever read. The Hulk battles The Thing for the first time in a titanic heavyweight battle. This one is a classic.
Well the authors changed Bruce’s name to Bob in the issue. Did they forget? Anyway the battle is pretty epic and the cliffhanger has me on the edge of my seat!
