November 14, 2022For a book that has Lila on the front cover, this isn't nearly as Fowler-filled as I would like. Instead, it is the love story of Elizabeth Wakefield and a horse named Thunder. No, seriously, there is some serious horse-fever-as-metaphor-for-burgeoning-puberty stuff going on here. The moment they meet is described much as the first meeting in any torrid love story:
If this isn't enough, we then get a very seductive description of the horse through Elizabeth's eyes:
It's a real Mr-Darcy-walking-wet-from-the-lake moment.
Ostensibly, this story is about Liz using Lila for her horse, while Lila uses Liz for her homework. It's about Jess being jealous that Lila and Liz are spending more time with each other, than they are with her (“Lila is not my sister's type, OK?”) and Liz pretending that she's really Thunder's owner, while spending a lot of time with the stable hand Jess is crushing on. Oh, and Liz spilling the beans to all of the Unicorns about Ken kissing Amy, because she is just that good a best friend.
But really, really this is the story of Liz's hormones kicking in with a vengeance and of her becoming addicted to the feel of a powerful stallion between her legs. And, when it's over, she feels a little naughty and a little ashamed of herself, but she's finally learnt that it's wrong to deceive and use people just to get neigh-ed.
In the silence of her first glance, she felt she could barely breathe.
And when he stared at her, he seemed to be saying, “Yes. You're the one.”
If this isn't enough, we then get a very seductive description of the horse through Elizabeth's eyes:

A serious horse girl ghostwrote this book.
The horse in question is described in the most loving, intense descriptions; you'd think the animal was magical.
Anyways, Liz kisses Lila's ass so she can ride this magical horse, and Lila uses everyone to do her homework by dangling the horse (who she doesn't even like) as a reward. Jess gets mad jealous, and also has a crush on a stable boy who befriends Steven...it's kinda a cluster.
Twins Lila is just such a brat. I adore her, but ugh.

OK, this one I understood. When I was Liz's age I would have done absolutely anything to get up on a horse. So becoming friends with Lila and letting herself be used...it's a fair trade. This is for a HORSE after all.
What bugged me? Is that Liz had her very first riding lesson and within a month was ready to compete and was better than most of the riders at the stable. Seriously? Even someone who's a natural would not have the understanding in a month's time to know how to manage a horse in that kind of competition. This gave this particular book a rather high Mary Sue quotient, and since I'm not big on that kind of wish fulfillment, I had to drop the rating down for being just too illogical for words.
You're just not that good, Liz. Get over it.

First Place
After a boring history lecture, the twins are in the hallway giggling about Jessica’s imitation of their teacher Mr. Nydick.. At Lila’s locker they see her surrounded by a bunch of 6th grade groupies. Daddy “Warbucks” Fowler, after a casual mention that she wanted a horse went out and bought Lila one. So now she has a horse named Thunder and she’s already bored with it.
Liz vents inwardly about the injustice of it all. Why should Lila get to have a horse and she doesn’t even care about it? Liz has been taking riding lessons so she heads out and Jess joins Lila. Lila picks a selected “chosen one” (a girl who let her see her math homework) and invites her over this weekend to ride. Thunder. The others are dismissed.
Jess teases Lila about her new found popularity but she just shrugs it off. Jess wonders how she can be so nonchalant about it. Lila then starts to bitch about the responsibilities with having a horse and creepy stable boys. Then she gets bored with the subject all together and starts talking about a new necklace.
Amy and Liz are at the Wakefield’s, about to do homework and they go up to her room which is decked out in a horse theme (pictures, posters, a open copy of National Velvet). Jess comes in and tells them she’s been invited over Lila’s this weekend to see Thunder. Liz again gets jealous!
In the lunchroom the next day Liz is working on a headline, gets what she needs from an outburst from Lila, and is about to move when the groupies start circling, but Lila approaches her gushing about the Sixers. She then says she has a fabulous idea for the next edition for her to do an article about Thunder. She even invites her to come see him this weekend. Liz rejects the offer and later tells Jessica she will NEVER write a story about Lila’s horse. Jessica tells her to sleep on it. After all she and Lila now have something in common. But the temptation is too much and she tells Lila she’ll do it. So Lila tells her she can come by after school.
At Carson Stables, Liz is stunned by how HUGE the place is and she takes one look at Thunder and falls in LOVE (and from what she describes the feeling is mutual). Lila allows Liz to ride him and she’s in heaven! Afterwards, they go back to Lila’s house to write the article. After this Lila and Liz start to spend more and more time together.
The Unicorns mention it to Jess but she blows it off and says they just have something in common. But deep down, Jess is upset. Liz wasn’t even feeling Lila until she got Thunder. Lila even invites Liz to do homework with her and Jessica. When they get to Lila’s, she has a surprise. She’s arranged for someone to bring Thunder to the house. Lila casually drops the hint that she wishes she had someone to be her horse sitter and Liz happily volunteers.
Lila further uses Liz (she finds out) to pass around her homework answers to the rest of the Unicorns but she figures it’s a small price to pay. She goes outside to get it out her head and visit Thunder, but there’s a strange boy outside untying Thunder. But it’s just Ted Roger’s (the new stable hand). Jess thinks he’s cute, but Lila tries to make him even more uncomfortable for giving Liz a shock then disses him to go back and read her “Sexy Stableboy Magazine” when he invites them back to the stable to watch him return the horse.
Jess and Liz convince Ned tho to take them. Ted thinks Thunder is Liz’s horse. Jess tries to get Ted alone in the tack room, but it’s clear she’s not the twin he has his eye on.
There’s a competition coming up with prize money and Liz is excited because she’s already been taking Thunder out on some jumps. By the downside is she’s not the owner. She thinks no one would have to know tho.
One day Jess gets so upset that she answered the phone and Lila asks to speak to Liz, but she gets over it when Lila invites her to a slumber party. Then she finds out that Liz has been invited. Alice however talks her into giving it a chance for Lila to like both twins. At the party tho, Liz is uncomfortable because basically it’s a Unicorn party and all they want to do is watch rock videos and gossip. Then the gossip turns to Amy and in defense Liz drops the tea that Ken kissed Amy at Julie’s party. Liz makes them promise not to tell and they say they won’t (Unh hunh)!
Lila makes some suggestions to the article but Liz says it’s fine. Lila threatens her that she either make the changes or no more Thunder. At dinner, Ted is over the twin’s place and Jess is again trying to flirt with him (unsuccessfully). He mentions that Liz should enter the competition and Jess blurts out that Liz isn’t even Thunder’s owner. Lila is. But the next day when Ted overhears Liz talking to Thunder, he tells her he understands and he isn’t angry. In fact he offers to coach her and she can give Lila the prize money. Liz thinks this is a good plan. So they have a week to prepare.
Liz is feeling so good that she lets Amy in on her secret. It even seems like the Unicorns are gonna keep their promise. But on the day of he competition after Liz leaves for the stables the Unicorns show that they definitely haven’t forgotten. They tell her they know all about her kissing Ken because Elizabeth told them. Amy tells them but what they don’t know is Liz is about to enter Lila’s horse in the competition and win. Lila is stunned and they both rush to the stables.
Amy shows up and confronts Liz and then Lila does. Liz confesses to Lila that she was using her the same way Lila was using her. She tells her that she should be the one to enter Thunder in the contest for the prize. At the word “prize” Lila starts to sing a different tune and tells Liz she should enter. Liz just laughs in her face and tells her NOPE! You’re not getting over on me this time. He’s YOUR horse!
Liz and Amy leave as Lila yells that she (Liz) will never get to see Thunder again. Ted goes on in Liz’s place (he’s been practicing the advanced jumps behind Lila and Liz’s back), Liz calls Jess and finally gets her. Everyone hurries to the biggest event of the month in SVH and Ted (with the sight of Jessica) wins the competition. He then offers to take Thunder off Lila’s hands for 700.00. He promised Liz she can come ride Thunder whenever she wants too,
My Thoughts:
Such as life. Isn’t it always like that? You see someone with something that YOU want that always just seems to bitch and complain about it and it makes you BURN up on the inside that some people could only sit on the sidelines and watch hoping and PRAYING for the day IF EVER they get the lucky thing and you have to listen thinking why do they get this (fill in the blank) and IM the one who deserves it. IM the one who wants it more! IM the one who wouldn’t treat it like that. Story of my life! So, I could relate. I’m just glad that THUNDER was the winner in this. In ways than one. Not only did he win the competition but he got the most deserving owner. Lila was over him the moment she got him and I don’t remember Liz’s horse obsession in any other book. Nor in the SVH books do I ever remember her mentioning her former horse interest. Maybe it’s a phase some girls go through. Liz and Lila both had their moments in this when I liked them. Lila had some amusingly snotty lines and Liz (who usually lets Jess walk ALL OVER HER in SVH) in an awesome moment stands up to Lila and refuses to let her use her anymore at the end of the book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read – the story's engaging narrative and Elizabeth's lively adventures, particularly her past passion for horse riding, added a charming layer to the plot. Her experiences and enthusiasm in equestrian pursuits were highlights for me. However, I did find myself frustrated with Jessica's behavior; her bratty demeanor and tendency to stir up trouble, seemingly driven by jealousy, often detracted from my enjoyment. It felt like she frequently disrupted the harmony and plans of her sister Elizabeth, and I couldn't help but wish for a more supportive or at least neutral sibling dynamic. Despite Jessica's antics, the story's overall charm and Elizabeth's character made this a worthwhile and entertaining read."

October 26, 2025Elizabeth continues her character arc as a complete bastard! When Lila gets a new horse, Elizabeth thinks she's better than Lila and deserves to have a horse more than her. She starts sucking up to Lila in order to visit Thunder (Lila's horse) at the stable, brushing and riding him every day. Before long, she's only gone and entered herself in the owner's beginner's competition, lying to everyone in the process and omitting to tell Lila entirely. When Elizabeth tells The Unicorns a secret about her best friend, Amy Sutton, Amy gets revenge by telling Lila about Elizabeth's plan to enter Thunder in the competition! Don't worry, of course a random character saves the day. I'm so here for this other side of Elizabeth, long may it continue!

Elizabeth and Jessica are in sixth grade. Lila gets a horse named thunder which her father got her although she doesn't really appreciate the gift (no surprise there.)
She lets members of the Unicorn Club visit and, amazingly enough, Elizabeth is also allowed to visit the horse (because of things she is doing for Lila related to school work.)
Liz takes a liking to the horse and riding it. Still, there are problems with Jessica, a horse competition, more (expected) nastiness by Lila to some other girls and an interesting turn of events in the story.
The characters stay within their expected bounds, the story itself is good and the resolution is quite acceptable.

This is a first time read of this book for me as an adult as I never owned it as a child so it's one of the missing ones i'm getting to complete my collection. All i can say is that you can tell it was written by a different ghostwriter to the others. The style is different and the story is so stupid! Elizabeth doesn't stick to any of the morals she's so keen to push onto others in other books and, as always, at the end everything is forgiven and forgotten to make a good stage to set the next book. Glad I have filled the gap but won't be rereading.

Liz suffered a lot. She deeply cared about Thunder and did what she did to be able to give him the joy he deserved and have the experience of riding an amazing horse.

I do not enjoy horse books, but here we go…
Liz is jealous that Lila got a horse because Liz is suddenly genuinely in love with them 🙄 (Okay she did love them in SVK). But Lila is using horse crazy girls to do stuff for her in exchange for riding her horse. Lila suggests Liz write an article on Thunder 🐎 and Liz reluctantly agrees. She goes to check him out and it’s love at first sight (sorry Todd). So Liz decides to suck up to Lila to keep seeing him and everyone noticed the new friendship, with Liz helping groom Thunder and doing Lila’s homework. A new stable boy (Ted) is crushing on Liz while Jess is crushing on him, and Liz is crushing on Thunder 😂 Everyone at the Stables thinks Liz owns him, and want her to enter an Owners riding competition. Ted also tells Liz how he hurt his leg and lost his mother in a car accident and had to sell his horses. Meanwhile, Liz let’s slip to the Unicorns that Ken KISSED Amy while defended her and starts to realise she’s made a real mess. Ted finds out she doesn’t own Thunder (thanks Jess) but convinces her to enter anyway. Amy is about to go cheer her on when Liz’s slip comes out, so Amy tells Lila about Liz riding Thunder. She gets confronted and blows up at Lila, makes up with Amy and storms out. She convinces Ted to ride Thunder and convinces Lila to allow it. Jess makes it just in time to give Ted a confidence boost and win! Lila sells Thunder to Ted, and Jess and Ted get all smiley at each other.
My rating - 2/10 - This took me agessss to read. I just don’t enjoy horses 🤷🏼♀️

She gets confronted and blows up at Lila, makes up with Amy and storms out. She convinces Ted to ride Thunder and convinces Lila to allow it. Jess makes it just in time to give Ted a confidence boost and win! Lila sells Thunder to Ted, and Jess and Ted get all smiley at each other.
My rating - 2/10 - This took me agessss to read. I just don’t enjoy horses 🤷🏼♀️

I picked up one of the Sweet Valley Twins novel at the library (before my strict read in order only rule) and fell in love with the California twins and their friends and family. I had just started reading thicker chapter books, and joining the library summer reading club, I went through these books pretty quick. I was excited that I could read and really fell in love with books and reading. I believe I was about 7-9 when I read these books so it was exciting to read about 12 year old popular preteens. I could relate to both Elizabeth and Jessica, and really could not pick which twin I liked better. I would not finish this series as I would quickly move on to Sweet Valley High (Double Love). These are very tame books, and any age could read them. First crushes and bullying were the big issues that I can remember. This is very Full House (TV series) kind of books.

I didn't have an interest in reading these books, but I think one of my sisters must have because sometimes they were around the house and I was the kind of kid who'd randomly pick up and breeze through anything that was sitting there. I'm really confused as to why I even read this one because I didn't like horses. Guess I must've been bored, and these books didn't take long to read. This one's about Elizabeth suddenly loving horses and putting up with bratty Lila in order to get to ride her horse. (And of course Elizabeth is awesome with horses after a single lesson.) I forget how exactly it happens but Elizabeth ends up hanging out with Jessica's friends because she's been at Lila's so often, and she hates it, and she has to write a newspaper article about Lila. And there's something where Elizabeth tells a secret for no apparent reason. (Maybe being a jerk is catching.) The plot on this was the usual questionable and convoluted unrealistic story where kids don't seem to get adults involved when they probably should.

Elizabeth loves horses, but she doesn't really have an opportunity to ride them. That is, until she finds out Jessica's snobby friend Lila will let her ride hers, but she has to put up with these annoying girls and kiss up to Lila as a sacrifice. As a writer for the school paper, Elizabeth is badgered by Lila into writing an article about her, too, and Elizabeth discloses something she shouldn't have. It's no good when you've cheesed off the leader of your sister's social group. . . .
Elizabeth and Jessica always read as cardboard cutouts to me; they say and do things in transparent ways to make actions fit together to manufacture plot. I found the drama unrealistic and it made it very difficult to root for anyone or care about what happened to them.

Nothing more hilarious than reading about Elizabeth's creepy obsession with a horse.
Nothing that Jessica said had prepared Elizabeth for her meeting with Thunder. In the silence of her first glance, she felt she could barely breathe. His eyes looked almost human, with a deep, calm intelligence. And when he stared at her, he seemed to be saying, "Yes. You're the one".

Not all that bad. Liz has recently gone horse crazy, just at the same time as Lila's daddy has bought her a horse... Liz ends up doing a LOT of sucking up to Lila because Lila "lets" her groom and take care of her horse for her.
