One of his best

I’ve read every book R.R. Haywood has written, so at this point I know his style, how he builds characters and generally have a reasonable idea of when he’s trying to lead me somewhere.

Made absolutely no difference.

This is an exceptionally well put together story. I spent most of it trying to work out who was actually responsible and kept changing my mind. Even knowing Haywood and the way he writes, I only properly worked it out about 10 pages before the reveal.

But I think the characters are what really make this.

I loved Sophie. I loved Declan. And I’m fairly certain I’ve met Stan at some point in my life.

They all have incredible depth and their own reasons for behaving the way they do. People behave suspiciously for reasons completely separate to the main mystery and when those pieces start coming together they actually make sense. They’re not just conveniently acting strangely because the story needs another suspect.

That’s really difficult to pull off without it feeling forced and he absolutely nails it.

It’s something Haywood has always been brilliant at. His characters feel like actual people. They’re funny without being written just to deliver jokes, flawed without becoming caricatures and there’s usually far more going on underneath than you initially realise.

I’ve read enough of his work that the bar is probably unfairly high at this point. Extracted is still one of the books I judge other books against, including his own.

Baited is up there with some of his best.

One of my favourite books of the year.

Another smash

Is there a genre Haywood can't write extremely well? Seriously if he comes out with a romance novel I'd probably read it. I love this character and can't wait for more. I do hope Mike finds out his bosses name. Great job.

another great read by Haywood

Once again another great read. Like Pringles once you pop you can’t stop. All Haywood’s are can’t put down page turners. Still waiting on a new Undead though

Another cracker from RR Haywood, full of his usual, and entertaining satirical, and down to earth humour, combined with a twisting entertaining and action packed story
