Haylie Pomroy, celebrated nutritionist, and New York Times bestselling author of The Fast Metabolism Diet shares a prescription for total health based on decades of work using food as metabolic medicine. Our bodies are always talking; we just need to learn how to listen to them. Sometimes they whisper to us—our energy is off, our body shape is morphing in ways we don’t like. Sometimes they try to give us straight talk, pushing our cholesterol a little higher or we have IBS or indigestion. At other times they’re screaming, we’re pre-diabetic or full blown, our moods are a mess, and our immune systems confused and attacking us. Every one of these health signals hides a specific kind of metabolic dysfunction, and for each, food is the answer. In her new book, Haylie teaches us that anyone can achieve the body and health they want from the foods that they choose and use.
I would like to give 6 stars for this book. First of all, I grabbed this book because I was looking for something that would provide a diabetic diet that I was suggested by my gynecologist. I have a PCOS and a weight loss struggle is a big issue in such cases like mine. I knew of my condition for over 10 years but I was never been told to look into my problem from food perspective. Doctors would rather push hormonal treatment, alas.
So, I started reading and recognizing my problems and learning deeper why and what is happening to my body. And I immediately jumped into the suggested diet: basically, I was overweight like 15 pounds and I was suggested to eat more not less, like we usually are accustomed to hear. But the point is in eating in a specific order because how the body hormones are interacting with you, and specific amounts of different nutrients. And every case is very specific, so you have to know your problem, if it works for me, it doesn't mean it will work for you. So far I have been on this eat-more-diet for 60 days, no struggling at all or any cravings, and I've already lost 12 pounds. It's not a diet thing, it's simply learning deeper how to understand your condition and reverse it through your correct gut. It sounds simple, but it's a very difficult process.
7 Powerful Prescriptions to Feed Your Body Back to Health
And as the subtitle continues….it is for G. I. stress, fatigue, hormones, mood, cholesterol, diabetes and autoimmunity.
Fast Metabolism Food Rx is all about repairing your metabolic pathways, using food as medicine and listening to your own body. As the author says (paraphrased), what good is eating certain foods if you can’t metabolize them properly or absorb the nutrients from them?
She first goes into what is real health and what is metabolism.
The real key to health is to be able to empower the body and purposefully manipulate what your unique body does with the particular foods you eat. (page 17)
Ms. Pomroy does include ideas for exercise and environment but believes that we are “most powerfully controlled by your food choices”, (page 17) and that, “to effect any kind of metabolic change…you have to change what you are doing.” (page 17)
Metabolism is the big-picture process of how your body takes things in and transforms them for energy, rebuilding, and repairing. (page 22)
When you change your metabolism, you can potentially change almost anything about how your body works. (page 22)
You essentially have to buy-in to this author’s theory of how illness and disease happen and to how to reverse it.
An imbalance in metabolic pathways is at the crux of all chronic disease. (page 29)
In most cases, outside of surgery: Food is the only way to repair chronic disease. (page 30)
The author then goes on to give you an introductory symptom quiz to see what your body is telling you. (pages 44-45) And there is a much more detailed quiz in the back of the book to help you determine which chapter’s “prescription” you should do first. (pages 245-248)
There are some foundational rules for good health, such as never to skip breakfast, to eat real food, don’t skip meals, do not exercise on an empty stomach, drink lots of water etc. and this includes a basic food list to eat from (which excludes gluten grains and dairy).
Then the book has a chapter with a prescription for a particular group of ailments that use the same metabolic pathways, such as:
gastrointestinal dysfunction, indigestion and IBS fatigue, low energy and exhaustion PMS, perimenopause, menopause and manopause high cholesterol, inflammation, impaired lipid metabolism mood changes and cognitive challenges metabolic syndrome, blood sugar issues, prediabetes and diabetes immune dysfunction and autoimmune disorders
In each chapter she includes sample symptoms, targeted pathways for repair, guidelines for repair, top 20 power foods for repair, sample meal plans, sample recipes, and some nonfood strategies to include.
Not being a professional nutritionist or doctor I can’t speak as to the complete soundness of this program but from my extensive reading it does sound reasonable, safe and healthy to me.
Since most of my readers are Christian I do want to point out that this book does in NO way address spiritual issues; does not talk about the true cause of illness, stemming for Adam’s sin or as coming from demonic activity. So keep that in mind, that this book is only talking about things in the natural, and from, as far as I can tell, from a nonchristian.
This book is best suited for people who are looking for help in natural to some of their health problems and that already believe in the premise that food is medicine or at least that food is a very good way to be a good steward of your own health.

This is an interesting read, and certainly one of the better books available for addressing the connection between food and health. The content might be somewhat technical for some readers, particularly if this topic is new to you. That being said, the author does an excellent job of clarifying and breaking down information into the simplest terms.
The layout is simple to navigate, with much of the book divided into diet plans for specific health issues. This allows readers to easily find the plan best suited to their needs. We're given lists of the best foods to eat and, in some cases, foods to avoid. The author also includes a sample meal plan in each section.
While I do think this book is well worth reading, there are some things to be aware of before delving in. First, the diet plans are all quite strict. I've been following a fairly strict diet on my own for years, partly out of necessity and partly out of preference. But this is even strict for me. You need to really want to heal, and you need to have a lot of willpower in sticking with this. These diet plans will be especially difficult for people who work full-time. Along with the strictness of what you eat and don't eat, you're required to eat a small meal or healthy snack five to six times every day. So you'll need a flexible job and/or an understanding boss.
The most challenging aspect for me personally is the meal preparation. Even many of the snacks require some measure of cooking. If you're like me and have severe chronic health issues, you might also find this aspect of the healing diet exasperating.

I have been listening to a lot of food books lately to understand the way diet works for health. Pomroy claims that food prescriptions rather than medications can help solve the root cause of various ailments and offers a more holistic view of health (anatomical, emotional and diet-based). Though the first quarter of the book felt like one long infomercial, there were parts I found really helpful. In the low-fat, low-carb always dieting craze, we have been led to believe that we should look at food from the perspective of what we should stay away from rather than what we should make sure to include in each meal so that every meal becomes an opportunity for nourishment and health. This is a perspective I haven't had and realized how hard it is to change my mentality.
I am generally a healthy person so I didn't have a lot of the ailments this book describes. Still, it is interesting to see how food can be used to solve a root issue rather than medication which really only addresses the symptoms.
The most useful part of this book was the chapter dedicated on how to speak to my doctor, what lab tests to request and how to be in control of my own health. Too often, I go into my annual physical without any preparation and just assume that all the standard stuff is enough. She lays out a plan where I keep all the documentation and track my own results so that I have better control of what I need. She also provides some good tips to make sure my insurance covers as much as possible.
In the start of 2018, it seems appropriate to resolve to be more in control of my own health!
I discovered Haylie Pomroy almost a year ago through her Fast Metabolism Diet, where I lost 30 lbs and have kept it off. I was excited to read this new book because I love Haylie's approach to food. Her idea of DIET (Did I Eat Today?) is so radical! She WANTS you to eat good food. She wants you to fall in love with food, to embrace it, to use it to fuel your body to do what it needs. And then she gives you 'prescriptions' - plans to follow to help your body heal itself from low energy, high lipid profiles, even autoimmune disease. Her answer is never to eat less, but to eat more of the things that will allow your body to use nutrients to be the best it can be. Thanks to Haylie, I am approaching food not as the enemy, but as a friend who can help me with what I need to achieve.
Having followed Haylie Pomroy's "Fast Metabolism Diet" for two years, I was happy to learn this book was being released, and even happier to receive a pre-release copy.
The Fast Metabolism Food Rx offers whole food "prescriptions" for feeding your body back to health. It covers GI Stress, Fatigue, Hormones, Mood, Cholesterol, Diabetes, and Autoimmune Dysfunction. If you're suffering from any of these, I strongly recommend this book. It goes over the disorder and gives you a healthy food method of fixing it.
I don't feel like I could give it a fair rating so I'm going to leave all the stars blank. I'm sure this is really helpful for some people but, it bored the heck out of me. There are some good recipes in there and I like the pages that tell you what foods are specifically good for brain function, energy, etc. I think for me this is a book you keep around to skim over once in awhile but not something I'm going to read front to back.
Not sure how to rate this book. First of all I got it as an e book, and that makes it difficult to see or print the food lists, so I now have Haylie's The Fast Metabolism Diet from the library. A lot of people have had success with this. After an intermittent fasting diet book disaster and a car accident as a result I am on board to eat regularly. I will write again after trying it.
I feel it was sort of slap dash put together and doesn't explain fully what to do other than the diet. Also, some of the foods feel like they are on the wrong list. For example, for the Hormone diet, it says Oranges are one of the core foods to eat. Yet, they are on the high glycemic fruit list. And, you are never supposed to eat high glycemic fruit on that plan. ??
I’ve been dabbling, perusing different books that have suggestions for how to repair your health through your diet, and more specifically, those books that address pre-diabetes. This is the first one that offers what seems like a reasonable and concrete plan. Yeah, it offers a few recipes, but more importantly, it sets up a framework and gives you the flexibility to work within it. There are chapters on different sets of diseases, and each one has a different and solid plan. This author is a nutritionist and a strong writer.
“So, how do I survive with all these health issues? I think a better question is: How have I managed not just to survive but also to thrive with them?…Today my labs are beautiful, and I have food to thank for that. I haven’t been on prednisone since I was twenty-one, and I have food to thank for that. I delivered two beautiful and healthy children, and I have food to thank for that. I deal with my RSD without medication, and I have food to thank for that. I wrote three New York Times bestsellers despite my learning disabilities. I have a thriving career. I feel good – right here, right now. And I have food to thank for all of it.” – Haylie Pomroy
Haylie Pomroy knows her nutrition. Despite having dealt with debilitating health issues (everything from eczema and folic acid assimilation complications, to ADHD and the autoimmune disease ITP), Pomroy learned how to use food to heal and thrive. Her experience is noted in each of her previous books, but Fast Metabolism Food RX takes this knowledge to the next level. Who knew that food, health equations, and dietary reflection could be so insightful and informative? With an approachable tone, wonderful insight, and a ton of insight into nutritional powerhouses and different foods to combat specific health concerns, this book feels like a trusted friend chatting about healthy eating based on their own experiences. This book is wonderful and I honestly found that I did not want to put it down because I was so fascinated by the information and couldn’t wait to put my newfound knowledge to the test. After all, if Pomroy can combat nearly a dozen various health concerns, I can absolutely improve my own health by eating more consciously.
Fast Metabolism Food Rx by Haylie Pomroy grabs your attention right away! Just look at the cover (here it is again). Bold letters. The title speaks for itself, but it's the subscript of "7 Powerful prescriptions to feed your body back to health", and then underneath lists a few health issues that it targets. The more I read about food and diet, the more I'm convinced how food is one of the major culprits to declining health or any health issues. And this book, speaks towards that belief.
I'm not familiar with Haylie, but after reading her introduction, I am fairly certain she knows what she's talking about. Having had multiple genetic and environmental health issues, she understands what it means when your body is not what it's meant to be - healthy and vibrant. This book is about your body and what it craves, what it desires and what will make it happy - the right food. In Fast Metabolism Food Rx, she provides strategies to help your body achieve the goal of happiness - health. Her strategies are backed with lots of notes and references from medical professionals and published research. It includes charts and lists to help you understand and plan a "repair attack". For example, there's a meal plan for blood sugar repair for 7 days on page 211. I personally love the appendix list that combines a lot of the lists throughout the book, and I go back to it constantly to check on that food group.
In all, a great resource for anyone, healthy or with some health issues.

"The Fast Metabolism Food Rx" describes how you can use healthy foods to help your body to heal itself. The author's own health problems motivated her to study nutrition and come up with these plans, and now she does this professionally. The foundation of her program is a list of foods that will help your body to heal. You can buy almost all of these foods at a local grocery store. You'll need to make your own meals, but she suggests making extra and freezing it for when you don't have time to cook.
She recommends 3 meals and 2-3 snacks each day, eating every 3-4 hours, plus at least 8 hours of sleep. You eat from certain categories of food (complex carbs, vegetable, fruit, protein, etc.) at different times to help heal certain problems. You choose the foods that you like from the foundational food list under each of these categories. She included some recipes as examples, and she talked about appropriate exercise and relaxation options to compliment the food prescriptions.
I have no concerns about her food selection or overall eating plan. However, her every-three-hour prescriptions don't allow much wiggle room, and not everyone is going to have a work schedule that will allow it. Yet I still recommend this book, as I'm pretty confident that you'll improve if you just increase the amounts of these foundational foods in your meals. About 90% of my meals are already made up of these foods, and I've healed from a number of health problems.
I received this book as a review copy from the publisher through Blogging for Books.
Do you suffer from Blood Sugar Issues, Prediabetes, even Diabetes? How about PMS, Perimenopause or Menopause? How about Gastrointestinal issues? IBS, indigestion? These are just a few of the areas that Haylie Pomroy’s new book touches upon. Your body is talking to you; you just have to listen. This book addresses using food as medicine to help our bodies deal with “what ails us”. This is a paradigm shift in how you eat….100 calories of empty calories is just that….empty. Haylie’s focus is on the quality of the food. She gives clear and concise recommendations using her power foods list and specific foods for the particular condition. Consider what the food you eat does to enhance your health. She puts YOU in charge of your health, you assemble your “dream team” of doctors and professionals. She gives you a template of baseline tests to ask for and conversations that get to the heart of the matter. Just like her book, “The Fast Metabolism Diet” and “The Burn”, Haylie Pomroy approaches nutrition from a solid, whole foods base. As with all of her other recipe ideas, the sample recipes are good and easy to prepare. I have done both her 28 day Fast Metabolism Diet and followed The Burn and lost weight, felt great, slept better, and had more energy. I have now followed her Hormone Repair Prescription and can’t believe how much better I feel. Thank you Haylie!!
Finally, a book that explains the causes of many health conditions, and how to handle them and not just mask the symptoms as is the case with conventional pharmaceutical drugs. Food is the prescription to, if not cure you, make your life better.
The author goes into fantastic detail and uses a clear, concise voice to put her information across. The 'prescriptions' themselves sound like very hard obstacles to get over in order to include them in your life, but you can also start slow and then build to the level of the prescriptions.
But does it actually work? I would say yes. I have been following the Hormone Repair Rx, and put my husband on the Diabetic Rx, and we've both felt and seen improvements in our bodies, health, and lives.
My only peeve with this book is that it doesn't explicitly tell you if there's a prescription better suited for cancer survivors, or if there is in fact a Rx specifically for the condition...
But on the whole, totally recommended! This could change your life!
This book presents a lifestyle change for those of us who have issues with our bodies and it is not a fad diet. It sets guidelines and helps you discover where you are in terms of health. There are lists of recommended labs to request from your general practitioner along with a quiz to provide guidance on where to begin.
What I really appreciate is that Haylie Pomroy's advice is to not eat foods for what they are lacking, but what nutrients they can provide your body. It is a more balanced approach to dietary lifestyle change. Food is the focus and she emphases the importance of having a healthy relationship with it. Be warned though, it is a lifestyle change and not a weight loss diet. The weight you lose will be an added benefit. The primary goal should be to feel healthier when you begin.
The prescriptions and explanations of the science behind this diet are far more informative then anything you will get from your GP. She draws from her own relationship with food along with her patients experiences. She has witnessed what works.
Well, I know my prescription. I have an autoimmune disease which has been acting up lately and this book has given me hope that I can make some changes in my diet to improve my symptoms. This prescription is unique from the other 6. It involves a rotation diet and elimination of some of the foods on the foundational list. Interestingly I've experienced problems with some of the foods she suggests eliminating. My body has been talking to me but I haven't been listening as carefully as I plan on doing now. Also, I will be eating 6 times a day-3 snacks and 3 meals. I don't think I can just start doing the whole program overnight or I'll be overwhelmed so I'm going to start slowly but begin today! If you want to use food therapy to regain or keep your health, this book might have some ideas for you!
Haylie Pomroy (New York Times Best Selling Author) grew up with a number of physical ailments which became a real challenge to her. Not wanting to live her entire life on prescription drugs she took a nose dive into researching and learning. What she found out could put a damper on many doctor's businesses. It is not by chance that she is a well known nutritionist today. She has discovered the remedy to most illnesses is what we eat. She even prescribes food to her clients. Fast Metabolism Food Rx lists the foods we should avoid and equally as important, the food we can have. This publication is a wealth of information and can be used over and over for reference. I think it is the perfect companion for those who want to develop a healthy lifestyle. I am honored to have read and reviewed for Blogging for Books.
Fast Metabolism is what caught my eye so I grabbed the book but I missed the Food RX which turned out to be the most important part Pomroy looks at multiple common health problems and offers a food prescription to counteract the problem. Her way of looking at it is if your body is not functioning properly in one area, then you should nurture the area with foods capable of helping things get back on track. She does a great job of suggesting ways to talk to your doctor and get them on board and she does recognize not everything can be treated this way but offers this as a first step in the healing process.
Great factual information written in a very personable style. Makes you feel like you have a friend helping you work on your health issues. This book is about healing health problems with food. It's not specifically about weight loss but it relates to weight loss in that many health issues block weight loss due to a faulty metabolism. But in this book, having a slow metabolism is the result of the body compensating for other issues, and these issues have solutions.
Simple, clear, motivating, challenging but doable advise. Eating plans to reverse illness and regain optimal health, including weight loss. I highly recommend this book.
This was a first-read so I won this book. This was my first time coming across this author. I really enjoyed this book. She shown what eating real food can do for you. Her D.I.E.T stands for did I eat today? If all the problems she has can be fixed or improved by following her 7 prescriptions plans, which aren't hard to follow. These plans are also flexible to some extend. She gives you the top 20 power foods for each plan, and the foundations food list. A must read for anyone wanting to get well without all the drug prescriptions and their side effects.
Great book. I think that anyone who has a health issue or weight issues-big or small- should read this book. Pomroy gives insight into why our bodies react they ways they do and the importance and healing power of whole foods! Brilliant and real. Her Fast Metabolism Diet book changed my life and I know many others who have had great success with it too. She says to inform your doctor of your plans and have a team to help you through. Btw, she is a big proponent of eating more natural whole foods for weight loss, not less and not anything lite. I wish she had an office closer to me!
I have yet to start any of her food prescriptions or "diets" but I was encouraged to see someone with a sense of balance and common sense in the crazy wild diet fad world. I found this book very informing. I learned a great deal about nutrition, digestion and all the mysterious cellular level activities going on in my body. I would encourage everyone to read it.
plan to update after I have tried her food prescriptions. :)
Absolutely loved it. Discovered it at local library and enjoyed it so much I purchased it. Following the meal plan helped tremendously with my hormone fluctuations. Easy to follow plans explained in a way that makes sense. Chapters organized intelligently. Great nutritional information and advice by a licensed nutritionist. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to deal with inflammation, hormone imbalance, diabetes, etc.
Haylie's best and most personal work. After knowing her for the last six years, this is the book that all the others have been leading to, and the one with the most transformational impact on the conversation of what constitutes health. Haylie knows better than most why our current views on health or the lack thereof are not only ineffective but dangerously leading us astray. She, in this book and in life, is a delight.
