Whitney Rayne hates absolutely everything about Christmas...except the sizzling kiss she shared with a captivating stranger at a holiday party last year. The memory of that kiss has gotten her through a lot of cold, lonely nights. Mostly, though, Whitney’s been focused on growing her business as a real estate photographer, so she’s thrilled to get a last-minute job photographing a luxurious Vermont vacation home. But there’s a catch: the listing agent is Liza Snow, the woman Whitney hasn’t stopped thinking about since she kissed her.
Liza has her own reasons for disliking the holidays, reasons that led her to Vermont two days before Christmas to oversee the listing for her boss’s vacation home. She’s intensely uncomfortable once she realizes she’s accidentally hired the woman she shared a rare moment of abandon with at a party last year, especially since the chemistry between them still burns as bright as the festive decorations covering every inch of the vacation home.
When a tree falls across the driveway, stranding them in Vermont with a snowstorm on the way, things quickly heat up inside the house, even as the weather worsens outside. By the time the roads are cleared, they might learn to love the holiday—and each other.
Rachel Lacey is an award-winning contemporary romance author and semi-reformed travel junkie. She's been climbed by a monkey on a mountain in Japan, gone scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, and camped out overnight in New York City for a chance to be an extra in a movie. These days, the majority of her adventures take place on the pages of the books she writes. She lives in the mountains of Vermont with her family and a variety of rescue pets.
4.5⭐️ Rachel Lacey is one of my favorite authors when it comes to romance novels. She can write the characters' stories and actions with incredible sensitivity and empathy. And I already love the Vermont area without even having been there once. But it is on my bucket list.
And this Christmas story is no exception. Sweet, heartfelt, and full of wonderful characters.
Both main characters are around 40 years old, and while Liza’s career as a real estate agent and future managing director is on solid ground, photographer Whitney is still building her business. Perhaps this last-minute assignment—to photograph a luxurious estate in Vermont so close to Christmas—is just what she needs to boost her reputation in the industry. It’s a good thing she’s a Christmas Scrooge and has no family obligations over the holidays. The only challenge: the real estate agent accompanying her is the woman with whom she shared an out-of-the-blue and unforgettable kiss a year ago—the woman who, like her, can’t stand Christmas. But mixing business with pleasure is a no-go.
Rachel has once again created two extremely likable characters. The chemistry is sizzling; their forced proximity isn’t helping to douse the embers—maybe the snow will help cool them down.
But the story is much more than just a romance; it’s about vulnerability, understanding, acceptance, and feeling safe enough to share the wounds, pain, and insecurities they’ve endured in the past, to open up to new experiences, and to help one another. Both characters are well developed, and the story has depth. I loved both from the first second. But when they got stuck in this Holiday home, her understanding of Liza and her way to create this safe space is one of the best parts of the book.
Packed into a novella, it’s the perfect Christmas-Scrooge’s Christmas story.
ARC provided by the authors in exchange for an honest review
What a wonderful Christmas novella this was. Rachel Lacey is a master at creating complex, supportive characters and bringing the backdrop (often) Vermont to life.
I loved this story. Two self-proclaimed Scrooges are thrown together over the holidays and find themselves in a forced-proximity situation that becomes a journey of patience, healing, and reclaiming their own stories.
Whitney is incredibly patient and emotionally mature, even while carrying hurt caused by her family. Likewise, Liza is navigating her own family wounds and the impact of past unsupportive relationships. As their connection grows, they begin to unpack what those experiences mean and slowly build something stronger together.
I adored watching their relationship develop. The story is low angst, heartfelt, and wonderfully character-driven. While the Christmas setting adds plenty of charm, it never overshadows the romance at the heart of the book.I was rooting for Whitney and Liza from the very start and couldn't help falling in love with them. 🫶🏻
Thank you to Rachel for the opportunity to read this ARC. I’m leaving this review voluntarily.
This book is beautiful, okay. It has such a powerful theme of patience, acceptance, and consent. You could absolutely feel the connection right away and despite the length, the pacing felt perfect. Whitney is an incredible partner and Eliza's work through her personal traumas is done so realistically. It isn't instant. The spice is so freaking good and felt very unique. I haven't read anything quite like it. And wow, the ending!!!! Rachel Lacey with another swoon worthy novella.
i don't think there's a single rachel lacey book i've read that i haven't enjoyed. i received this one as an ARC from the author through joining her facebook group, which i really appreciated because this as always was a great read. kind of similar to another sapphic xmas book i read in the past that was one of my faves, but not so similar i felt like i was reading the same book. i loved how both mcs had different and valid reasons for disliking the holiday and how that changed through each other. i also really enjoyed how this book bucked the trend and stereotype of lesbians moving in together and falling in love right away cuz (spoiler in the epilogue it's one year later and they're still living in separate residences and are just then saying i love you)and the story of them falling in love was really cute and funny. i kind of wish it was longer but still a very entertaining read that i would definitely read again.
I really liked this short sapphic Christmas novella. It was hot, and also tender, and the perfect length for a quick holiday read. I love that there is so much real life in this book… Liza’s insecurity, her challenges with orgasm and sex, and how honest she is with herself. Whitney is the perfect opposite for her… patient and open, encouraging communication. The forced proximity trope is perfect, and I think the “scrooge” aspect of the book is a unique take on the holiday story! Perfect book to get you in the mood… and maybe a holiday mood as well 😂
I absolutely devoured this story. Honestly, I love Rachel’s writing and all her books are some of my favorites. This book gave Christmas but they are both anti Christmas.
For being a novella this book had so much DEPTH. The plot was great and the spice was done so well. I really fell for Liza. It was like Whitney was meant to be her person. She was so gentle and kind with her. She created a safe space for her to explore her sexual desires. Whitney helped Liza realize there was nothing wrong with her. She just needed someone to heck in with her and to have her boundaries respected.
Whitney also needed Liza. Basically Whit felt like she wasn’t important to her family. Through Liza I felt she learned she could find that happiness in a partner that she was missing.
I loved this book and wish there was more. It was such a perfect to balanced novella.
I am a sucker for all things Christmas, including a Christmas romance. When I saw this was a story about two women who dont like Christmas, I was so excited for something new and different. Grumpy/Grumpy sign me up... always. As a women who spends so much time in her head, I deeply connected with Liza, but was absolutely infatuated with Whitney. I guess, also like Liza. Liza and Whitney's story was sweet and sometimes painful and filled with a different sort of Christmas joy.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this book so shout out to Ms. Lacey for allowing me to read it early!
I loved this book. It’s the perfect mix of sweet and spicy and the characters have a ton of depth and development, even though it’s a novella. I related to Whitney very strongly and I really enjoyed the Easter eggs to previous books littered through the tale. It’s a perfect, short holiday read, and a great way to start the holiday season :)
Almost nobody pulls at my heart strings the way that Rachel Lacey does and I eat it up every time! This novella was only 155 pages, so pretty easily read in one sitting. It was the perfect length for this little snowed in story. Despite this being a short bingeable story, it still felt fully developed and had so much depth! My heart broke for Liza, in her vulnerable moments, and Whitney was exactly what she needed. We all need a Whitney to see us through our own struggles. I love that this was a holiday story, but it wasn’t really about Christmas, since they both have complicated feelings around the holiday. I highly recommend you grab this one when it comes out!
Rachel Lacey… the woman can seriously write. And I feel like I’ve just been edged for four hours straight, in the most delicious of ways! 🥵
She owned me by the end of the prologue, and I spent the entire evening glued to this book. I bloody LOVE when an author grabs you like that and simply refuses to let go.
This book is all of my favourite things. Grumpy x grumpy, forced proximity, sexy as hell AND Christmas! It was giving me The View from the Top vibes the entire time, which, if you know me, is my favourite Rachel Lacey book ever written. So that’s a pretty bloody big compliment!
But underneath all that delicious sexual tension and seriously good spice is a beautiful story about vulnerability, acceptance, consent and finding someone who makes you feel safe enough to let your guard down.
I adored Whitney and Liza. Their chemistry is ridiculous, but it’s the tenderness between them that really got me. The way Whitney gives Liza the patience, reassurance and space to explore her desires, without judgement or pressure, is just gorgeous. And I loved that Whitney needed Liza just as much, albeit for different reasons.
Neither woman has an easy relationship with Christmas, and I appreciated that Rachel didn’t try to wrap everything up in a big shiny festive bow. Their struggles feel real, their connection genuine, and their emotional journey is handled with so much care.
And can we appreciate how much Rachel packs into a novella?! The character development, the emotional depth, the chemistry, the SPICE! Nothing feels rushed. It’s beautifully balanced, and I was completely invested from beginning to end.
I went in expecting a deliciously sexy Christmas romance and got all of that, plus a story that made my little lesbian heart ridiculously happy.
Rachel Lacey, you’ve done it again. ❤️
And now I CANNOT WAIT for the audio! Bring on Quinn Riley and ALLLLLL that sexual tension! 🥵🎧
ohhh man this book is full of christmas joy and magic....
whitney doesnt do christmas, but shes at a party networking she is the only one not dressed up in christmas colours until her eyes catch someone else not dressed for the season either....
liza hates christmas her nickname is scrooge and she doesnt mind... so when a woman also not dressed for the season bumps into her and knocks liza drink all over her there is only one place they can go to get the wine out and its whilst there they share a kiss
whitneys job is taking photos of high end properties and helping them look their best to sell and she loves it.... she just needs the one job that will help jump start her career, so when the call comes for a photographer the day before christmas eve she doesnt mind going....after all she has no one to share the season with and no place to be
what she wasnt expecting was to meet liza again... a year later after their fateful kiss.... it was a kiss that has kept whitney warm for the year but she never thought she would see liza again
liza when she thinks about it realises that she shouldnt be surprised seeing whitney again, after all they both dont care for the christmas season.... but liza is doing a favour for her boss and he needs his vacation home sold quickly hence the decision to get it on the market just after christmas and photos were needed...

i was glued to my kindle
cant wait to see what is next from this author, always a pleasure never a chore
This was a very nice Christmas novella that I must recommend to all readers that love a cozy Christmas story about two scrooges forced to spend a few days together and when they are together realize Christmas may be quite enjoyable after all. An extra bonus was the fact that not all fluff, they have a lot to work through together and I was impressed that all this was possible to squeeze into a novella.
Whitney and Liza meet for the first time at a Christmas party where their eyes meet and they have the best kiss ever, then Liza just moves on without leaving a name and number. One year later Whitney that is a struggling photographer gets a job offer, a real estate one and the senior broker giving her this job and accompanies her to Vermont is no other than Liza. The photo job in this very Christmasy place is finished in a few hours but they get stuck in the house when a tree falls and blocks the driveway. They are “unfortunately” stuck with that person they had this amazing chemistry with one year earlier. They talk a lot, realize they have so much in common with estranged families and then Liza is giving Whitney another amazing kiss but runs once more.
Why is Liza acting so strange? She has some sexual hangups and has had some bad experiences in the past because of that, she does not think any person out there for her. Whitney is showing such a patience and understanding about all this. It’s wonderful to follow how all dealt with, how Whitney makes Liza feel safe with her.
I received a free ARC from the author and leave an honest review voluntarily.
Thank you so much for the author for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This is the perfect festive story for anyone who wants a standalone, quick read with a hefty amount of spice.
Neither Whitney nor Liza is a big fan of the Christmas season. Each with their own family complications, they prefer to spend the holidays alone with absolute minimal festivity. Of course, when they wind up stuck together in a luxurious, heavily decorated Vermont house in the middle of nowhere, neither of them are thrilled.
This is a story of two women with immediate chemistry, and how this one brief moment in their lives can change everything. It shows how meeting someone who just gets you truly can make a huge difference.
As with other Rachel Lacey books, the Vermont setting is beautifully crafted. Between the gorgeous isolated house and it’s breath-taking view of the stars, it’s a place anyone could begin falling for someone. It is also delightfully spicy, and the author does not waste a single moment of the page count.
Ultimately, if you're looking for a lengthy story about two people slowly falling in love and showing their full relationship in detail, this isn't for you.
If you want a brief snapshot into the lives of two women and how this chance meeting changed everything (and made things a whole lot hotter), then I'd really recommend you pick up 'Tis the Damn Season.
I'll be back to write my honest review in a few hours once I've had a moment soak it all in and reflect.
Update:
I could say SO much about this book and this author but I'll try to keep it short.
Rachel Lacey has always had a way of captivating me with her writing, and it was no different this time around. My bookshelf is just proof of how much I love her books.
I was held captive (willingly) from the prologue of this novella (and loved every second of it).
Neither Whitney nor Liza were a fan of Christmas for different (very valid) reasons, and one thing I liked about this story was that it didn't stray from that. The writing, and the way it was all explained, truly reflected their struggles and made them feel like real, likeable people.
This story is so much more than a spicy, forced proximity love story set during the holiday period. It's also about being vulnerable, trusting someone enough to open up about your insecurities, and letting someone truly see you, and accept you, for who you are. (However, the 🌶️ scenes were fire).
I could have read a 1,000 page book on these two wonderful, grumpy characters, but I like that it was kept short, spicy and also very sweet.
I had the privilege of receiving an ARC from author Rachel Lacey. This review is entirely my own.
What an absolute joy this was to read. 'Tis the Damn Season is a grumpy/grumpy sapphic romance about two "scrooges" who are forced to spend the holiday in a luxurious Vermont vacation house. I find the "scrooge" elements to be both relatable and very endearing, and the FMCs Liza and Whitney are very likable. I absolutely adore the depictions of a snowy, rural Vermont. All of the descriptions of the vacation home just made me really want to spend my own holiday there.
This book is both very cozy and very real, and it mixes Hallmark-cheerful holiday themes with all manner of complicated emotions that often accompany the holiday period (family estrangement, rejection, etc.). Rachel Lacey's ability to gently delve into complicated issues/feelings/emotions is one of the many reasons why I adore her writing. I was a huge fan of Learning Curves and Margin of Error for exactly this. (And I recommend both of these books too!!)
I will definitely be re-reading this in December for the Christmas season. I loved this so much!
Ah I do love receiving a Rachel Lacey ARC, and getting a copy of ‘Tis the Damn Season in my inbox was absolutely no exception to that. I will admit there was a part of me that was a bit reluctant to pick up a Christmas book - and indeed at the point I read this we hadn’t even passed Halloween yet - but I just couldn’t resist diving straight in!
Thankfully though while this book is set around Christmas, Whitney and Liza are decidedly not fans of the season. Having first met at a Christmas party, they are the only two there that are not embracing the Christmas Spirit - but perhaps that’s a good thing given it leads to them sharing a sizzling kiss.
But it’s now a year later, and while they both remember that night they’ve not seen each other since. Now though, the two of them are thrown back together when Whitney is hired by Liza to photograph a luxurious (and rather isolated) holiday home owned by Liza’s boss. It’s such a fun premise, particularly given that the house is decked out in all it’s Christmas finery - something that neither woman is prepared for. But it’s manageable right? A few hours photographing the property ready to launch the listing and then they’ll be on their way - what could possibly go wrong?!
A fallen tree, and an incoming snowstorm that’s what! Now Whitney and Liza are stuck in the house together with the chemistry, and tension, rising. There’s such a delicious atmosphere reading this book because you can just sense everything that is burning between them.
One of the things I particularly loved was how Whitney and Liza communicate. I loved the acceptance and vulnerability between them. Liza, especially, has my heart because I ached with feeling for her and everything that she holds close. I loved that this feels like so much more than a romance, although it does have it’s share of spicy scenes. It also feels very well developed for a novella, and I really did appreciate that a lot. Nothing felt overly rushed which can be a risk with a lower page count.
I really loved this story, and I actually think I’m going to miss Liza and Whitney now that the story is over with but I did enjoy the time that I spent with them.
I loved absolutely everything about this book! One of my favorite things about the story was the reminder that just because your own family doesn’t want to spend the holidays with you doesn’t mean you can’t find people who do. I loved that message so much because family isn’t always about the people you’re related to. Sometimes, it’s about finding the people who genuinely want you around and make you feel like you belong. Whitney and Liza’s banter was fantastic, and I loved their dynamic. The fact that they shared a memorable kiss the year before and then unexpectedly found themselves working together, only to get stranded in a snowy Vermont vacation home, made for such a fun setup. The forced proximity, undeniable chemistry, and Christmas setting made this an absolute delight to read. Rachel Lacey continues to be an author whose books I’m always excited to pick up, and this one was no exception. I loved the characters, the humor, the romance, and the heart behind the story. This was everything I wanted in a sapphic holiday romance, and I honestly wouldn’t change a thing.
I have loved all of Rachel Lacey's Sapphic romances so my expectations were really high for this book, and it did not disappoint. Rachel wrote two characters who are extremely likable, relatable and whos chemistry is explosive! (And their forced proximity absolutely lit the fuse.)
I really enjoyed watching Whitney and Liza's relationship develop while they slowly learned to be vulnerable and trust each other, it was really satisfying and sweet. I always worry about getting a fully thought out story in novella's because of the shorter length but this book had so much depth and really well developed themes of acceptance, consent and patience.
As a scrooge myself I appreciated a holiday story that wasn't in your face about Christmas, the grumpy/grumpy dynamic was fun and fresh and I really enjoyed that as well. I don't reread books often but I can see this one being one I go back to, I really enjoyed it and the spice was delicious!
I received an ARC from the author, all opinions are my own.
Okay I thought I’d love the grumpy x grumpy, but grinch x grinch gave me even more than I expected!
As per usual, I loved Rachel Lacey’s writing. From the get go, she made me fall in love with Whitney and Liza. They had immediate chemistry, which was soon backed up with a load of emotional depth that made it impossible not to root for them. Even though this was a novella, somehow the story didn’t feel rushed and I felt like I got to know both the characters inside and out.
And the communication?! It was really refreshing to read two women who talk openly about their feelings, wants and needs. I loved the tenderness between them both, especially as Whitney helped Liza feel comfortable and safe.
This really was a fabulous festive treat, with two grumps, plenty of spice and a lot of heart. Consider me thoroughly converted to grinch x grinch 😉
The more I read of Rachel Lacey, the more I fall in love with her writing and her characters, she is a master of her craft and 'Tis the Damn Season is no exception. For a short novella about two women who have complicated feelings towards Christmas it is absolutely packed with wholesome moments and paced perfectly.
The setting is gorgeous. Vermont at Christmas. In a luxury house...trapped in a snow storm, with a gorgeous colleague. What's not to like? Unless you're trying to deny the chemistry that is sizzling from the get go.
One of my favourite things about this book was that we have two MCs that *COMMUNICATE*!! Yes, that's right, they communicate, about their feelings and their wants and needs particularly sexually, openly and maturely. Liza does need a little coaxing as she has had a difficult time in previous relationships sexually but Whitney is so tender and caring with her making her feel comfortable and seen leading to some really beautiful moments. As a person who often gets stuck in her head the way Liza does, this was lovely to read and the fact that the spice was still so well done made my little heart very happy.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and look forward to reading more of Rachel's books.
I received an advance review copy for free from the author, and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily.
It’s her signature writing that absolutely scoops me up, carries me along the characters’ journey and then ends far too soon for me. First, the prologue. Great set-up. Didn’t know you needed 2 grumpy anti-holiday people did ya? So, check out the forced proximity, stranded in the house, and it’s Christmas with people who actually have beef about the holiday! Then there’s the chemistry!! The sexual tension! Yet we still get a touching story about people coming into their own by taking the steps necessary to be open, patient, and above all, vulnerable. No spoiler, but one of the issues is something many of us have grappled with when it comes to seggsy time. Would that we all have that kind of feeling of safety in a partner!
Just a beautiful story that somehow works in a novella. And thank you for the epilogue!!! I hope to hear Quinn Riley give this one a voice!!
This is a cute little story, perfect for the holiday season and one which leaves you wishing you could be stranded in a beautiful snow-covered holiday home for christmas too.
Rachel Lacey captures the mood perfectly of a woman who has never felt quite at home in herself and her body and struggles to let go. Im sure there are many women out there who have felt that too and the limitations ypu impose on yourself to protect you from the hurt that may come from being unable to feel 'normal'.
This is a short but sweet sapphic love story that presses all the right buttons and one that made me feel seen in a positive way.
Whitney and Liza met at a party, they share a kiss but don't see each other again until a year later they end up working together. They drive together to take pictures of a house to be sold. They end up spending two days there before of the wether. I liked the forced proximity and the tension between them. The spicy scenes were really hot and well written. Liza has some trouble relaxing during sex and Whitney was so understanding about it. They spend some great time together and finally they can go home after a few days.
Not going to spoil the end but I liked the epilogue!
I’m going to need this book to become the spiciest Hallmark movie done to date.
I’m usually not the most preppy gal around but I become a different person during Christmas so I couldn’t relate to Whitney and Liza on that aspect but I loved them so much. I loved that, although the main plot happens within just a few days, it doesn’t feel rushed, feelings and trust develop slowly. Snowed in forced proximity at its finest.
You simply can’t go wrong with a story written by this author. Sign me up to meet the love of my life at a huge house in the middle of nowhere decorated to the brim for Christmas. Thank you to Rachel Lacey for providing me with an eARC.
I love a good Rachel Lacey read and this one didn’t disappoint. It’s spicy and sweet and just enough holiday to get ready for the season. I enjoyed the dynamic with these characters and the amount of development they experience, especially considering it’s on the shorter side. I also really appreciated the care that Rachel showed while writing some of the more sensitive topics. This one is pretty on point for what I expect when I pick up a book from Rachel!
Rachel Lacey did it again with a sweet wholesome book! I loved every moment of it! Sometimes the holidays arnt all magical and sunshine for people and this book basicly shows that! I have fallen in love yet again with another of her books because it feels so real and close to home 💜. I definitely recommend this book for the holiday season it brought me so much joy and Itll be on my re-read list!
I loved this so much, a forced proximity holiday novella. Two scrooges who have shared a holiday Christmas kiss, snowed in for the holidays which they both don’t enjoy. They share their problems and lean on each other and explore. A lot of wine and heated touches and we are left with this novella filled with chemistry, trust and scroogesness.
Such a beautiful story about two scrooges who wind up stranded together in a luxury house in a snowstorm. Tentatively, they get to know each other and eventually fall in love. Suddenly, even Christmases aren’t so bad anymore.
An incredible story of two women that get trapped in a home during the holidays and giving them both some time to start to get to know each other on many different levels. Great spice and amazing women who take the time to listen and understand. I really enjoyed it and couldn’t put it down.
