I'd never read an entire devotional before (just read a few pages here and there) so I'm not extremely knowledgeable on what's good and what's bad for these kinds of books.
I did really like this book though. It's written in an interesting way, a way I've never seen before. It gives a verse and than it has a section where it's written as if Jesus is talking to you but it's the author (if that makes any sense at all). I personally really liked the Jesus talking parts. I felt like it put the verses into a more comprehensible structure and I was able to understand some verses better than I have in the past.
I do really wish that all the verses came from the same translation though. Some are from NKJV, some are from NLT, and some don't say which translation the verse is from. I read from NKJV and I prefer that translation so for verses that weren't from NKJV, I would look that up the verse in my Bible to see what the differences were. I don't understand why there would be verses from mix of translations and I really didn't like it but I know that's a personal preference and might not matter to some people.

Overall, I really liked this devotional. I read it all at once but I can definitely see myself going back and rereading it with the days, like most people do with devotionals. If you're looking for something a little different from the average devotional, I'd definitely recommend this book.

I’ve never had the chance to really review a 365 day devotional book until now. Granted, I have gone through devotional books in the past (Beth Moore, the love dare, etc), but I was never given the opportunity to review one until now.

The devotional book, Jesus Speaks by Steven K. Scott, sounds pretty interesting – “365 Days of Daily Guidance and Encouragement, Straight From the Words of Christ”. The book cover is gorgeous, part of the reason why I picked it up in the first place. I haven’t read Steven’s last book, The Greatest Words Ever Spoken – which is sort of important & I’ll get to that later.

There is a little disclaimer at the beginning of the book, letting readers know why the devotional was written, the odd way it is written, and how to get the most out of reading it. Here’s what it recommends:

1. Each day read and think about the red-letter statement at the top before you read the entry that follows. (the red-letters are scripture straight from the words of Jesus).
2. After you have read the day’s entry, set aside time to read everything Jesus said about that day’s topic by reading the referenced topics in The Greatest Words Ever Spoken – noted at the bottom of each page.
Now right there – is where I make the book 5 stars to 4 stars. To get the most out of the devotional, I am supposed to buy the author’s previous book. While you can go on without buying his other book, you ARE missing out on some extra devotional stuff. I really don’t like that.

Then, the book starts its devotional. I understand that there are two ways to create a 365 day devotional – label the top either as “Day 1…Day 2…etc” or “Jan. 1, Jan. 2, etc.”. I LOVE the Day 1 books because I feel I can start it anytime I want & if I miss a few days, I don’t feel rushed to quick skim through the days I missed. Unfortunately, this particular book is the January 1st book. For me, that takes half a star off – making it a 3.5 book review.

Now, I’m not going to copy an entire devotional onto this review, but I’ll try to give you an idea of what each devotional is like.

~ January 1 ~

Do you not say, “There are still four months and then comes the harvest”? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest.” John 4:35 NKJV

My dear child, why do you keep focusing on the future? Whether your mind drifts five minutes into the future or five months, dwelling in the future prevents you from experiencing My presence. You can know My nearness only when your mind is fully in the moment…

Therefor do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:34

~ The Greatest Words Ever Spoken, Living in the Present (pp. 277-78)

Now, the actual devotionals were pretty nice – I haven’t read all of them, as I do want to read one per day, but the daily instruction is inspiring. However, I do have to say that it’s a little weird reading a devotional that sounds like Jesus is talking – but it’s just the author. I’m not really sure how I feel about that and I would take another half star away, but because I do like the devotionals themselves, I’ll keep my rating at a 3.5

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy of Jesus Speaks through the publisher and Netgalley.

This year long Devotional is geared towards the followers of Jesus Christ, and anyone who wishes to follow Christ.

The Devotions in this book deal with everything from Healing to walking closer with Christ.

We are reminded that we shouldn't put off what God wants us to do today, until tomorrow. We are also reminded that Jesus is our perfect teacher.

I give Jesus Speaks five out of five stars

Happy Reading.

During His time on Earth, Jesus gave His followers more than one hundred life changing promises. He also gave more than one hundred teachings to enable us to live our lives in line with God’s commands and guidelines. This devotional gives you 365 daily readings, each of which allows Jesus to speak directly into our hearts and lives. Each day’s reading begins with a red-lettered statement of Jesus, directly from Scripture, word for word, followed by a powerful reflection on how He wants us to apply these Truths to our daily lives. You’ll never face a problem that is too great for Jesus to get you through it. There are no questions that He cannot answer. There is no more powerful writing than the Holy Bible and no other book has its life altering potential. That’s simply because no other book was divinely inspired. It is the divine love story from God, our Elohim, our Creator , to us, whom He created to be the object of His divine love. The more we get to know Jesus as our loving Savior, the more we will love Him and want to serve Him in return, and the stronger our faith will become.

I’m so thankful to have been given the opportunity to review this devotional. Every post is truly uplifting and inspirational. They’re simple enough for the newest Christians who are at the very beginning of their spiritual journey while still being able to inspire and guide those who have been a follower of Jesus for a lot longer. I really loved that all of the daily devotions started out with the words written in red from the Bible, the very words our Savior spoke because I have, sometimes gone through and just searched for those verses. It always brings me a great deal of peace and joy. So, having a devotional that focuses on those verses is an incredible blessing. I was also unable to read just one day at a time, it was more like I binge read them, taking the time to reflect on each one to find what God wanted me to learn this time.? I have no doubt that I will be returning to this devotional to read again because, in my experience, when I reread something, especially a devotional, different pieces stand out than the last time, based on whatever circumstances I’m facing at the time.

Best devotional I’ve ever read. I’ve had many and never was consistent, but this book got my attention from the first time I opened it and I really looked forward to reading it everyday. Shares the truths about following the Lord and his love for us. Really helped start my day off with my mind on things eternal instead of worldly issues. Definitely recommend

I received this book from NetGalley. I liked the layout with each day taking up a page and every day scheduled starting on January 1 so you could easily keep track of where you were if you went day by day. I appreciated having a Bible quote and then a brief discussion followed by another Bible quote. However, the first person Jesus perspective was offputting. I think the book would have been better in third person. Also, I found it really strange that there was no consistency with the Bible verses used as at least 5 different versions of Bibles were used (NKJV, NASB, NLT, KJV, ESV) and some verses didn't reference which version of the Bible they used. I don't understand the choice to use different versions for different verses. It would've been better had it either stuck with one version for the entire book or used multiple versions but cited different versions of the same verse for each day to provide context. A good devotional to provide food for thought and verses to meditate on but not as well written as it could have been.

Years ago there was a popular saying that took over the masses. Kids were saying it and wearing it on almost everything, "WWJD." What would Jesus do? We can run into this question multiple times through good and bad events, did you know that we can find out what he would do?

Have you ever heard someone refer to the words in red? The New Testament is full of words in red, those are his words. Our guidance in what he did, how he reacted and what he said. Full of his promises, his kindness and love. "Jesus Speaks" takes his words and sets them in the format of a daily devotional. Day by day you read through, seeing his words and then a tie in to how that same event or talk may be effecting your life today.

The fact this devotional is centered around things Jesus said makes this unique and different from many devotionals I have read in the past. If you are looking for a new devotional, this one might be the one for you.

This devotional starts like most devotionals do with a scripture and then on with the devotion. As most people who know me I collect devotionals so I had to add this one to my collection.

I did enjoy the devotions I have read so far but as with any devotional it is all one day at a time. Therefore, my review is for the days I have read in January so far.

The only part of this devotional that I did not care for is the Author telling me that I have to buy his book The Greatest Words Ever Spoken to go along with this devotional. Well I did not nor will I choose to do so.

I would recommend this devotional to anyone who loves to read a daily devotional and scripture to start your day off.

When I started to read this devotional I was not sure how I would enjoy the paraphrase of various Scriptures for each day. Scott take a passage from Scripture (which he also discusses in his book The Greatest Words Ever Spoken) and then paraphrases to add a personal flavor.

I found these paraphrases to be quite encouraging. They were not over the top but succinct and organic. There are times that I forget God is my Heavenly Father and these paraphrases remind me of fatherly wisdom that is needed often in life.

Is this the best devotional I have read? No. However, it may be the most father-like. In this respect, it is worthy of reading.

To meditate daily on the words in this book is like sitting at the feet of the Master. I received this through Goodreads.
