JUST ADD WATER, first in the series, introduces Hetta, a sassy Texan with a snazzy yacht, and she's not afraid to use it. JUST ADD SALT, JUST ADD TROUBLE, JUST DESERTS, JUST THE PITS, JUST NEEDS KILLIN', AND JUST DIFFERENT DEVILS get her into hot Mexican Waters. JUST PARDON MY FRENCH, BOOK 8, FINDS HETTA IN FRANCE and Book 9: JUST FOLLOW THE MONEY, takes a wild ride on two continents, and JUST FOR THE BIRDS, Book 10, gets her afowl of exotic bird smugglers. Book 11 finds her in Texas, and living in an RV until her boat goes missing back in Mexico, and in Just On Porpoise (12 ) her attention is drawn to the almost extinct Vaquita, and JUST SO WRONG (13) finds Hetta taking on the dogfighting trade. Her other books: The Texicans (Texas 1806-1836 Historical Western), Land of Mountains, a YA/TWEEN set in Haiti in the 1950's, Troubled Sea, a thriller in Mexico's Sea of Cortez, and BAJA GET AWAY, suspensful romance in Mexico.
This humorous action adventure treasure hunting mystery has unique and lovable characters with attitude, that had me holding my breath one minute and laughing the next.
Loved, loved, loved this book. All of the Hetta Coffey mysteries are just fun to read, but I believe this is the first one where Hetta's problems seem to sneak up on her. And Po Thang just makes it that much more fun. Hetta has great friends, a great love, a great dog and a great set up with her boat, but somehow it is just never enough. She needs, and gets, adventure. We should all live like Hetta, minus the killers!!!
Books in the Hetta Coffey series aren't so much about Hetta solving mysteries as they are about Hetta ending up in a situation where she is at risk and she needs to figure out how to get out of it--which eventually seems to end up with some mystery being solved. A free-lance engineer who lives on a yacht moored in a Mexican bay, Hetta depends upon her friend the Trob to locate jobs. A long-distance love relationship leaves her plenty of time to work and to get into trouble. When Trob locates her a job hosting an anonymous visitor on board, she enlists the help of her friend Jan who is often her partner in crime but whose culinary skills will make hosting a visitor more pleasurable and safer. When the guest turns out to be Nacho, a mysterious man with whom they're very familiar, they wonder why he's there and what he's doing as leaves each day on his panga to fish. Both Hetta and Jan are a bit nervous about being out on the water as reports of fatal giant squid attacks become more frequent. As always Hetta's snooping leads her to get involved in whatever nefarious plotting is going on as she and Jan try to avoid letting their significant others know who's on board and where they really are. Read the other books in the series first to really understand the personalities of the players here.
First of all, the story itself, the plot, was great - squid suspected of killing divers, a boat owner, modern mix of Annie Oakley and Lara Croft, getting involved in the; the protagonists as such were interesting: boat owner Hetta in Mexican waters, her friend Jan, and their significant others far away. Now - the telling of the story was something I just did not enjoy. It was - if there is such a thing - too humorous; every sentence in a dialogue a joke (or trying to be), every description of any of the events trying to be funny or ironic or both - it was just too much. In my opinion, Hetta's character suffered from that, so did Jan's to a lesser extent. For me, these personalities just did not come over as being genuine; yes, people will crack jokes when in danger or unpleasant situations, but not as much as they did in this book. Maybe if I had started reading this series from book 1 it would have been different, although as I understand, the books can be read out of order. I think less would have been more in this case.
This series is the hands down favorite! Just Different Devils does not disappoint. Well, the wait for more in the series maybe, LOL! That leaves time to re-read the books which are well rounded and the laughs echo again new. Read the series and Troubled Sea!
Love these books, probably because I have spent time in the Sea of Cortez and reading these books brings back oodles of memories, for example days spent at anchorage at Isla San Francisco. If I could, I'd give this one a 4.5!!! Can't wait til the next one!!
This is an excellent series with humor and action. Mehta is a true Texas tornado living abort her yacht the Raymond Johnson with her dog Po Thing and visited by her wayward friends and enemies.
The author keeps up her pace with the hilarious adventures of Hetta, Jan, Po Thang and the other salty characters they involve in their crazy adventures. Always a treat!
If it were possible I would give this book five more stars just because I love all Jinx Schwartz books! This book is funny, sweet, scary sometimes and very intense at times. The story is about Hetta Coffey, her best friend Jan and her dog Po Thang. It's also about massive squid, Mexican pirates, pearls and people who are not what or who they seem to be! It's sweet story of friends who will do and say anything for each other. It's about who has your back when you're in trouble, who can you trust when you can't trust your neighbor, it's about greed and what some people will do to get what they want. It's a scary story about Mexican bad guys who will kill to get what they want and then try to blame it on big sea creatures to keep people off the ocean. It's a funny story about a woman and her dog and the antics they get into. Hetta's internal dialogue is so funny I was laughing out loud! My husband kept giving me a questioning look but never did ask me what was so funny! (He doesn't read much) I recommend this book to everyone! It's age appropriate for teens and adults all the way to 95! There are two men who love Hetta and her friend Jan and you will here from them towards the end of this book. Jen's Jenkins loves Hetta but shakes his head at her and he penchant for trouble. Jan's boyfriend is Chino who also doesn't make much of an appearance until close to the end of the book and gets caught up with some less than law abiding characters and gets tied into a black trash bag! Please get this book and read it as fast as you can. It is book 7 in this series. I haven't read any of the first 6 books but I will certainly be on the look out for them.
( Format : audiobook ) "Why, oh why, don't boats have brakes?" Not having read a Hetta Coffey book before (this is book 7) but intrigued by the cover and wooed by the voice of the narrator, I requested and was given a complimentary copy of Just Different Devils, without any obligation, by the rights holder via Audiobook Boom. Thank you so much: I have now discovered a new and excellent series to explore.
Completely standalone, the reader meets Hetta and friend Jan, plus dizzy dog No Thant and a dolphin they call Bubbles off the coast of Mexico. (Yes, lots of others, too. Naughty, old enough to know better, all of them.) Hetta is offered, and accepts, a profitable job to take out an anonymous client on her beloved boat for a month. Trouble is, there have been reports of people being attacked and killed in the area by giant squids. But this job will pay out a lot of money, so... Surprise. The client is someone she knows only too well.
A good mystery story with fabulous characters (colourful and not quite honest), funny, cheeky and great dialogue, all performed with a delicious Texan accent by narrator, Stevie Puckett. So absorbed in the production, this reader barely noticed if the individual characters were voiced distinctively (so I guess they were!) other than wincing slightly at her dreadful Scottish accent for the attractive bagpipe playing man who moors his boat next to hers. But what did that matter? It was all tremendous fun.
A sniff of the sea, a frolic with a dolphin, friends united on the slightly seedy side of honest - delicious fun. Recommended.
A sassy, irreverent Texan, Hetta Coffey lives on the edge of legality on a boat in Mexico. When she’s offered a mysterious charter, she talks her best friend Jan into coming along for the ride. The two soon find themselves face to face with Hetta’s bete noir, Nacho, a man for whom she has conflicting feelings. He’s up to something, but they can’t figure out what. Oh, and there are missing mariners, oysters full of pearls, a murderous giant squid, an amorous dolphin, and a sexy kilt-wearing Scot making Hetta’s life even more complicated than it normally is.
Just Different Devils by Jinx Schwartz is funny, provided you can laugh when dismembered corpses are being described in gruesome detail. Well, maybe not so much detail, but what is described is gruesome. And, did I mention that while you fight to keep from spewing your lunch, you’ll be laughing your hind end off? You will, I promise. Hetta is my kind of hero, heroine, or whatever the proper term is. She lives life to the fullest, takes no prisoners, and makes no apologies. Yay, Hetta!
Loved this book, and I’m willing to bet that, unless you’re brain dead and totally without a funny bone, you will too.
Hetta should be considered an action heroine, given that she always ends up in dire situations with ridiculously hot henchmen and vicious villains.
The Hetta Coffey novels are full of action, action annnnd action! Complete chills, lots of spills (she and her gorgeous bestie Jan can be quite unexpectedly clumsy) and definite thrills are part of the novel. Hetta, Jan the bestie, their beloved doggie Po Thang and their other pals attempt to ditch the baddies chasing them and escape, after exquisite pearls are accidentally discovered and EVERYONE is after the pearls (and Hetta!) when she accidentally finds a stash rescuing a dolphin trapped in a net that is dying.
While book 7 follows the hilarious Hetta formula that works so well for her, please include an unexpected unknown - Mac the spectacular hot Scot (whether he is good or bad has yet to be determined but hotness is quite clear and Hetta is a sucker for a Sean Connery authentic accent) and a cast of new characters that are quite entertaining.
Lovvve the entertaining and fun that come with Hetta and her stories and believe y’all will do - delightful novels and an absolutely worthwhile read
This is the second book in series I have read. The first happened to be the first book in the series "Just Add Water". I can honestly attest to the fact that these are stand alone books--This book is the seventh! And what a romp it was!
I was somewhat reminded of Calamity Jane. Hetta and Jan are two women who don't give a fig-they will do what they want when they want and heaven help anyone standing in their way. Larcenous to the bottom of their hearts the thought of money and riches will make them attempt the unthinkable. They do also have hearts of gold--You will love Hetta's dog (who falls into an inter-species relationship!) and even all the bad guys are in their own way lovable--but don't stand a chance against Hetta and her intrepid partner Jen!
I found myself laughing out loud at parts of this novel--actually in more then a few instances!! It is a bit long-but WELL WORTH the read!! Just Different Devils
I had read a few books in this series and really enjoyed them, so I was thrilled for the opportunity to try one in audiobook format. Reading is great but the audiobook really brings this story to life in a most delightful way. Stevie Puckett did a great job with the narration and I had a terrific listening experience. Hetta's adventures are always tons of fun and this one is no different. Mayhem abounds when Hetta's at the helm and you're in for a devilishly good time! I would recommend Just Different Devils: Hetta Coffey Series, Book 7.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This review is my honest opinion.
Well Jinx it's been a nice ride. I sure enjoyed t his series. You saved the best for last. Looking forward to what comes next. The Red Devils get the blame as criminals try to get away with murder and the loot. So much for trusty criminals. Lots happen in this book. I read about 12 chapters New Years Eve waiting in the E. R. From reading it seems that boaters are very protective and supportive of each other. Good to know. Hope it helps keep the bad guys away. Seems not though. I think Hetta needs to calm her jets or she may lose her Jen's. Her knight in using armour.
Hetta Coffey lives on her boat anchored in La Paz, Mexico with her dog Po Thang that likes swimming with a dolphin that Hetta named Bubbles. Hetta gets a call for someone that wants to hire her boat for a month while they fish. Not knowing it is Nacho a somewhat friend of hers that is on the bad side of things. Hetta gets her BFF Jan to come and help with the cooking etc. Giant Squid and pearls are causing lots of trouble. Of course Hetta gets into the middle of things that causes lots of excitement up to the end!
This book is very entertaining. The characters, especially Hetta Coffey, are fun and exciting. The story takes place in Mexican waters, where strange things keep happening. People are not who they seem to be. Who can be trusted? Hetta has good instincts, and with her best friend Jan, manage to barely stay out of trouble and when things get dangerous, manage to find a way to escape. They also get to the bottom of the mystery, saving the good guys and getting rid of the bad guy, dead or alive. The book was hard to put down! A great read!!
Nacho, along with the usual cast of miscreants, is back in this book of Jinx Schwartz. This time they...... well, I won't spoil it for you, you just have to read it to discover the action, and believe me, there is plenty of it. There are twists and turns galore - reminds me of a bad highway. You really won" t regret downloading this, so treat yourself and get ready fo a very FUN read. Enjoy!
Hetta needs an income. She calls the Trob and he gives an option she can’t refuse. She will have an unknown passenger on her yacht. Who is it? Of course she calls Jan to accompany them. Wow expensive food, wine and electronics start being shipped to her. What can go wrong? There is always adventure in the Sea of Cortez! It doesn’t hurt to have a sexy Scotsman pull in next to her. What are these mysterious Red Devils? You can bet Hetta will find out! Another great read.
I never tire of these rich, quirky characters that Jinx brings to life. Lots of laugh out loud dialogue and twists and turns you don't see coming. Each book has been amazing. Never one to give the plot away, I can only say, I want MORE of Ms. Coffey and Ms. Jan's madcap adventures!!! Please, keep em coming.
The book I read before this was an emotional rollercoaster ride. I really needed to escape into something fun. OMG!! This was the perfect choice! It is full of laugh out loud humor. I have really enjoyed all the Hetta books but this one may be my new favorite! (Right up there with Just Add Trouble.)
Absolutely one of my favorite series! I recommend it to all my friends. The actual mysteries are well thought out & written, but the dialog is priceless. I chuckle throughout these books. Just Different Devils is another winner. I can't get enough of Hetta and her friends. Strongly recommended!
Hetta and Jan are up to their eyeballs in trouble again when they take on a month long boat charter for big bucks. Humboldt squids are reportedly killing divers, there's expensive booze on board, and Po Thang the dog falls in love. This is a great read and part of a lovely series. Loved it!
Saucy women and adventure fortunately the adventure won. Well paced it kept you turning pages, and the characters were deep enough to enjoy. Book seven the characters were still being developed often the author assumes you know them, it did have a little too much back story for my taste.
I enjoy her far fetched exploits immensely. As a sailboat live aboard cruiser, I am particularly interested in her tales of her boat life and that of Poor Thang.
The women are at it again on board Hetta's yacht, which she has chartered out for a month to Nacho. Thinking he is up to something, they are determined to find out!
This was a first time read for me & I was delighted with Hetta & her friends & her antics. I just wish I had read a few other previous books for the full background. This is my new favorite author. Can't wait to read another of his books!
Hetty she is a strong independent sassy woman, her stories of murder and mayhem are always a delight. The audio was good and brought the story to life, and was good narration. Given audio for for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
This one has even more action and multiple bad guys. Fortunately Jan’s 4H rodeo days came in really handy. She was able to quickly hog tie the creeps while Hetta kept the rest of them at bay with guns. Never a dull moment with these two.
