Planning and Post-It notes are the epitome of Evie's life. But when she meets Jack, her life gets more than a little complicated.
Thirteen years ago, Evie's firefighterhusband was killed in the line of duty, leaving her to raise their young son, Cody, alone. Now, Cody is marrying the love of his life, and as he packs up his belongings, the house feels as empty as Evie's heart. But for all her planning and mad organizational skills, Evie could never have anticipated the dramatic shift her life is about to make.
Tattooed, rough-around-the-edgesJack raises quite a few eyebrows in the tight-knit community of Banister Falls. Where Evie's life is stream-lined, Jack's approach to living is moment-by-moment. But as Evie gets drawn into Jack's world--a world that isn't as safe or predictable as the one she's worked so hard to create--he challenges her to open her eyes to the problems outside the walls of the church.
Jack doesn't make Evie feel comfortable, but he definitely makes her feel something. Something she hasn't felt since Max passed away--or, maybe ever. Because even though Jack isn't anything like her late husband, he just might be everything she needs.
Kathryn Springer grew up in a small town in Wisconsin, where her parents published a weekly newspaper. As a child, she spent many hours sitting at her mother’s typewriter, plunking out stories, and credits her parents for instilling in her a love of books – which eventually turned into a desire to tell stories of her own.
After a number of busy years, when she married her college sweetheart and became a stay-at-home mom, Kathryn rediscovered her love for writing. An unexpected snow day from school became the inspiration for a short story, which she submitted to Brio magazine. She went on to publish over a dozen more short stories for Brio, but it wasn’t until her youngest child started school that she decided to pursue her dream to write a book. In August 2004, her Love Inspired® debut novel, Tested by Fire, was published.
Fast forward to today and Kathryn has written over thirty novels. She lives on a lake in northern Wisconsin where she enjoys long walks in the woods and the change of seasons (although sometimes she wishes the "change" between winter and spring didn't last quite so long!) When she isn’t at the computer, you’ll find her spending time with family and friends, paging through cooking magazines or sitting in the sun. A really, really good day includes all three! If you want to know more, follow her blog Table Grace. . .thoughts and musings on living a life with nothing artificial added.
This book was nothing less than delightful! " The Hearts We Mend" is the second book in the Banister Falls series. I seriously thought that nothing could top the Dandelion Field (ahem! A book that you want to add to your reading schedule, asap). But I was so wrong! This book is so warm and heart-felt that you just want to keep it for-eves!
I loved all the characters; Evie, Jack, Gin ,Dan, Cody, Raine, the whole Morretti fam! Kathryn Springer did a awesome job with the character arc of each individual person between the two books.
I really liked Evie in this novel, I thought she was strong and very open hearted. Evie is trying to overcome her feelings of loss from her late husband, Max. And dealing with the loneliness of a empty home now that her son is starting a life and family of his own. She has to find where God's wants her now, and dealing with the fear of taking the next step into a new season. Which I could relate to, in a way because starting new chapters and dreams can be down right scary, but possible with God!
Plus, I totally appreciate her love for the Post-it notes ♥ . I thought it was so cute how that was the running joke between Evie and Jack.
Jack... Sweet, sweet Jack! This dude was just kindness personified! (In a rugged-tattooed-manly package!). Jack had a heart for God and he was so giving a ready to help anyone in need. I love when one of the characters said "Jack doesn't see people as interruptions" that's what I want be like, to really love people. That's how Jesus want us to live. And he was so caring to his niece... (swooning). Lol! I really enjoyed seeing the relationship grow between him and Evie.
I give this book 5 stars all the way! I hope Kathryn Springer continues on in this series, cause I'm officially a fan!!
♥ ♥ My Fav Qoutes ♥ ♥
"The memories can comfort us... or we can hold on to them so close, so tight, there isn't room for anything else."
"That's what it all comes down to, right? Believing God means we have to believe Him. Things may not look the way we want them to-- or they way we think they should-- but God sees the whole picture."
This book was just, quite simply, a pleasure read. I found the story about Evie's embracing life as an empty-nester (albeit a young one) to be a delightful story and I didn't run across anything that detracted from the smoothness of the storytelling for me.
My main complaint is that there isn't another book in the series! I definitely haven't had enough of this neat town and its inhabitants!
The Hearts We Mend is everything that Christian fiction should be . . . captivating storyline, seamless writing, richly-drawn characters with messy lives, and spiritual nuggets that the reader can take to heart. If you have a less-than-perfect family, or if you feel like you're frozen in place after a traumatic event, this book will touch you in a special way. Kathryn Springer is an exceptional writer and both books in this series are on my list of favorites. This book can stand alone, but reading The Dandelion Field first will make for a much more rewarding reading experience.
Opening the first page and being reunited with characters who had touched me in The Dandelion Field felt like coming home. Evie was definitely a sympathetic character in that book – having been widowed when her husband died fighting a fire and raised Cody as a single mom for 12 years – yet my feelings toward her were mixed because she seemed to throw a monkey wrench in the romance between Dan and Gin. But I’m so glad Evie got her story in The Hearts We Mend because we get to see her heart – and her gradual transformation is like watching a flower slowly open up to the sun, the end result being one of true beauty.
And then there’s Jack, a wonderfully appealing lead character with hidden depths way beyond what is seen on the outside. Faith and family are of utmost importance to him, and he had walked away from a construction job that he loved, because he loved his family more and wanted to be there for his brother in the small town of Banister Falls, Wisconsin. He has a heart for serving others, as does Evie – but in oh, such different ways! This unlikely pairing makes for great storytelling – Jack with his free-spirited approach, and prim & proper Evie with her structure and communication by post-it notes. It’s so much fun to see Evie surprising herself by doing things that seem contrary to her nature.
When a beautiful story leaves you with much to reflect upon – well, that’s one of the best things about The Hearts We Mend. The way Jack served his family and quirky fellow tenants at his ramshackle apartment building makes me think that I am way too content in my comfort zone. I always need the reminders that God brings people into our lives for a reason, and that He will always give exactly what we need at the moment we need it. But most touching to me is the fact that we are all different, and reflect our faith in different ways. I love these words of Kathryn from her Litfuse interview . . .
“Some of us are seeking. Some of us are struggling. Some of us are standing strong. No matter where we are, we need the hope that only comes from knowing there is a God, that he is good and that he loves us. I may write fiction but I pray the stories I tell always reflect that truth.”
I especially loved the secondary character of Maggie, who is so passionate about putting in a community garden across the street from Jack’s apartment building. It’s also interesting how Police sergeant Ryan Tate gets a little put out at with her “do-gooder” aggressiveness and I can just see a story brewing there. I also felt for Jack’s brother, Travis, and hope we see more of him.
Highly recommended.

Warmth exudes from every page of Kathryn Springer’s The Hearts We Mend. The characters will set up camp in your heart and may even start refurbishing it if you aren’t careful. Humor, love, and several poignant twists make this a truly enjoyable and inspiring read. It’s loaded with some great symbolism if you’re paying attention, a couple of pretty swoonworthy kisses, and lots of adorable little-girl twirling! Jack and Evie together are just … dreamy sigh. Jack by himself would be dreamy-sigh-worthy enough but Jack in love with Evie is completely twitterpating. In fact, I’m still smiling over the epilogue. But as much as I adored the romance (still fanning, as a matter of fact), the deeper meaning – the symbolism – remains my favorite part of the story. Just like the storefront that Jack is restoring, there is more to Jack than meets the eye. And much like Evie added a bit of variety to Jack’s dinner menu, her presence added some flavor to his life – and his neighbors – as well. Fans of Denise Hunter will enjoy this series too!
Note: This is the second book in the BANISTER FALLS series and, while it can easily be read as a standalone, it did take a few pages to orient myself to people and events – something that probably would have been unnecessary if I had read the previous book.
(I received a copy of this book in exchange for only my honest review.)
I started this book not realizing it was the second in a series. It took me a few chapters to get a feel for all the characters and their relationships since the story pretty much dives right in to Evie's life, and I think it would have been a smoother start for me if I had already read the first book, The Dandelion Field. Evie is angsting over her empty nest now that her only son is married, but once she and Jack become unlikely friends, the story focuses on her eye-opening experiences in the seedy part of town and the love and kindness needed by the people there. Evie has a true heart for service and I admired that she made friends in Jack's neighborhood quickly and without judgement. Her compassion is a blessing to Jack's family and although he doesn't feel worthy of her, he falls for Evie and they begin a sweet romance (amazing first kiss, by the way!) I felt for Jack as he repeatedly tries to be the rescuer and fix-it man for his splintered family, only to realize that he has to let God take care of things out of his control. I loved his character trait of being handy at renovating and improving buildings, it reminded me of my uncles and their skills :) The theme of letting go of fear to embrace the blessings God has in store for us is one that was successfully represented throughout the course of the book. Now I'm going to go read The Dandelion Field!

Kathryn Springer's Banister Fall series continues to be delightful with The Hearts we Mend. Her writing style is smooth as glass. I've read each of the novels in the series in around 24 hours.
The Hearts we Mend is Evie's story. After being widowed at age 25 and raising her son as a single mom for 12 years, it's time for her to live for herself. It was rewarding to watch Evie bloom.
The main male character, Jack, is rough at first appearance and a perfect match for Evie.
I look forward to reading more of the Banister Falls series. The series is highly recommended for fans of contemporary romance.
Even though I haven't read the previous book, I found this story enjoyable and easy to follow! I liked the characters, setting, and romance. The ending was really sweet, although a bit rushed in spots. I liked how caring the characters were and that they did things to help others. All in all, a very sweet read and I recommend it!
*I received a complimentary ebook copy of this book for my honest review. As always, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*
I enjoyed this sweet romance about single mom Evie and Jack, the temporary church custodian who shakes up her world. She's lived a sheltered life and he's lived a hard one. They couldn't be more different. But something about this handsome genuine man who reaches out to the poor and needy draws Evie into a whole other way of living. I love her generous heart and willingness to grow and change. I also love Jack's commitment to his family and his way of helping others. The secondary characters added a lot to the story and were fun to read about. All in all a well written book worth reading!
*Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book for review purposes. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are my own.*
Loved it! There was an issue with head-hopping, but it wasn't enough of a distraction not to read the book. This one will make you think outside of the box about what a Christian should look like.
Loved, loved, loved this book!! Absolutely stunning, The Hearts We Mend is a beautiful book to read and treasure. There is just something about Kathryn Springer's writing that makes characters spring from the page and words come to life. I wanted to savour this book and inevitably ended up reading it even faster as I couldn't put it down.
The Hearts We Mend is the second book in the Banister Falls series. I loved book one, The Dandelion Field, and when I saw that Kathryn Springer had a new book due for release I didn't at first realise it would follow on from Dandelion Field. Needless to say I was very excited when I realised Evie, mother of Cody, is the same Evie from Dandelion Field, of which I wrote "achingly raw and yet full of hope.... The Dandelion Field is a wonderfully written and a truly moving story. A perfect ending, and yet I want more. So much more of the loveable, flawed characters, simple and yet deep faith, and the little, touching moments." Guess I got my wish!! And The Hearts We Mend fulfils each of these just as much as The Dandelion Field did. I'm just hoping there will be another book in the series.
The Hearts We Mend picks up where The Dandelion Field left off. Evie, Cody's mother, is busy working at the church as well as organising a wedding, so she is a little worried when the church custodian suddenly takes a holiday and is replaced by a young, admittedly handsome, guy she just happened to accuse of trespassing not too long ago. But Jack's presence in Evie's well-ordered life is opening her to new experiences and filling the loneliness by encouraging her to take chances and reach out to others.
I just love the characters in this book. They are flawed, special, unique and seem as real as you and me. I love catching up with familiar faces from the last book, Dan, Gin, Dan's family and of course Cody and Raine, and I loved meeting some new characters, especially Jack, his niece Lily and his assorted neighbours. Jack is one of the most loveable, down to earth and charming-in-all-the-right-ways kind of guys. The romance that springs up between Jack and Evie is so enjoyable to experience, from a shaky start to Evie slowly falling for Jack's kindness and the way he includes everyone around him.
I love how faith is seamlessly woven into the story. The characters talk about God and prayer in everyday conversations, it is an integral part of their lives.
I'm really hoping there will be another book in this series (please, please, please???). I can't wait to return to Banister Falls, see another couple fall in love and continue the story of the other characters (though topping Jack and Evie as a couple is going to be very hard to do). While these books could be read as standalones I would recommend reading them in series order as it will make a lot more sense to follow the characters through their adventures chronologically. Besides, they are such good books there is no reason not to read them both. Very highly recommended.
The publishers provided a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Real life. Real faith. A winning combination that lured me in and held my hostage right to the delectable last page.
Wounded characters accomplish astonishing things as they stretch their faith and place their trust in God. A blessing of a read because I lived their fears and insecurities and grew right along with them. I so appreciate a solid inspirational thread in a Christian fiction novel!
Evie and Jack are navigating life after living through some difficult circumstances. What's really interesting is their diametrically opposing ways of coping. Evie has boxed herself into a protective bubble. Everything in her world is contained. Planned. Deliberate. No surprises mar her future...until her son announces he's going to be a father and a whirlwind wedding rocks Evie's predictable pattern of complacency. You can read that whole story in The Dandelion Field. This one takes off just days before that wedding. On the day Evie suddenly starts to feel like Alice falling down the rabbit hole.
Free-spirited Jack takes life as it comes, content to allow God to guide his footsteps as he tries to put his splintered family back together. I fell hard and fast. He's rough around the edges but has a heart for service and an easygoing way of accepting opportunities the Lord sends his way. I was as flummoxed as poor Evie when she suddenly finds herself swept into Jack's world. But I was excited too. Jack really opened my eyes to ways we can live the Savior's love in order to bless others. Some of my favourite scenes take place at Jack's ramshackle apartment. They're some of the funniest scenes too.
Love and laughter and plenty of unexpected twists make this an exceptional, faith-filled read.
My thanks to Litfuse Publicity Group and Zondervan Publishing for providing me with a review copy of this book.
Evie knows all about heartache. Her husband, a firefighter, was killed during a fire leaving her with her five year old son Cody. Now, thirteen years later, she's almost a grandmother and Cody is married to a wonderful woman. Evie meets a guy named Jack who is completely different from her organized, scheduled self. Evie needs to decide if she's holding on to her late husband or if she wants to take a chance on a crazy new life that won't be quiet or predictable.
I really enjoyed the nuances of this book. The sprinkles of faith, the courage and purpose, the importance of family, and the unique characters drew me in and kept me for the entire story. This wasn't just a book about two people falling in love, it was a story about community and family. It has been a while since I read book 1 so it was nice to jump back into the town with characters I was familiar with and see where they were now. But I think this book would also work well as a stand alone novel. Overall, this was a well written story that will appeal to a large audience. I will definitely be adding it to my library.
I received this book free of charge from Litfuse Publicity in exchange for my honest review.
This is the second book with "The dandelion field" book before this one. Also my first time reading it ever. What a sweet story of letting go of the past, being in the present, and hoping for the future. Finding love after tragedy and heart ache to forgive and let go. Moving forward is scary but Evie does a great job. Finding love and growing her heart. Clean, sweet, and refreshing.
The Hearts We Mend is the second heartfelt installment in Kathryn Springer's delightful Banister Falls series. It is another emotional novel of healing and while it can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend the entire series.
Evie Bennett is putting the finishing touches on her son Cody's upcoming wedding when she is dismayed to discover the church's regular custodian has been called away on a family emergency. She is even more distraught when she realizes his temporary replacement, Jack Vale, is the man she and her friend Gin previously met under rather inauspicious circumstances while delivering groceries to someone in need. A newcomer to town, Jack is a bit of an enigma and Evie is a little nervous around the handsome but rough around the edges handyman. There is much more to Jack than meets the eye and the pair form an unlikely friendship. Evie and Jack are surprised to discover their feelings run deeper than friendship but are either of them ready for a romantic entanglement?
Evie is definitely at a crossroads in her life. Long widowed, the main focus of her life has been her son and now that Cody is moving on to the next stage of his life, she is feeling a little lost and lonely. She is intrigued by Jack but he so different from anyone she knows, she is uncertain what, if any, place he has in her life. Quickly realizing she might have misjudged him, Evie is surprised to discover he has a strong faith and a very open and giving heart. She soon realizes she is attracted to Jack and she is willing to explore the possibility of a future with him.
Jack has put his wild days long behind him and his strong faith guides him as he helps others in need. He has collected a rather motley assortment of friends and he opens both his home and his heart to them (and anyone else in need). He is only planning on staying in town temporarily while he helps his troubled brother Travis and sister-in-law Cheryl get back on their feet. He is hoping that Travis is finally going to keep a job and maintain his sobriety but sadly, this is not the case. After the two end up in trouble, Jack becomes temporary guardian for his young niece Lily and his life becomes further entwined with Evie's when her daughter-in-law becomes Lily's caregiver.
One of the most enjoyable aspect of reading an novel by Kathryn Springer is her characters and their relationship with God. Her characters are ordinary everyday people with messy lives. They make mistakes. They make questionable decisions. Their families are imperfect. And yet, they still find love, acceptance and forgiveness through God's love. Their faith might sometimes falter, but they have confidence that God will guide them to the right path. Sometimes that path is not what they expected, but they trust that everything will work out in the end. In The Hearts We Mend, both Evie and Jack discover that God's plan is definitely not what they expected, but rather, what they need. Their road to happily ever after is not always smooth, but it is a healing journey that makes them stronger as a couple and as Christians.
Like the previous installment in the Banister Falls series, The Hearts We Mend touches on some very tough, true to life subject matter. Kathryn Springer handles these topics with sensitivity and she never downplays the difficulties associated with these issues. The storyline has depth and the faith aspect of the novel is subtle and enriches the overall plot. The characters are complex and richly developed with realistic strengths and weakness that are easy for readers to relate to. An absolutely marvelous addition to the Banister Falls series that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a sweet romance with a realistic storyline.
I loved Jack!! And Evie too, but Jack was my favorite. Such a swoony and GOOD man. He’s a keeper for sure. I totally admit that I went in to this one purely for the romance and I ended up being blindsided with just how wonderful Jack is! I loved the little family he created around him, simply by having his door open and being willing to be there for each of his neighbors. And his neighbors were quirky and awesome!
But Jack and Evie together? Oh my heart, I love those two! I love their instantaneous attraction and they way they just simply could not stay away from each other. All the heart-eyes for Jack, reader friends! Trust me, you need to meet this man. He will make you melt with his goodness, especially when it comes to a couple adorable little girls who love to twirl! ;)
Yet this story is so much more than just a romance. Evie and Jack both have to learn to truly open up to each other, and they mutually challenge the other to become an even better person than they already are. Beautiful story, beautiful writing, read this one, friends!
THE HEARTS WE MEND was like coming back home to characters I already love or am familiar with, a small town with all the usual charm and a close-knit church community, and a few new characters to throw some twists in. It was great to see how Evie has slowly thawed since first being introduced to her in the first book and to see how much Jack pushes her to see her town and herself in a different light. Jack was a great character! A perfect balance for Evie. There were so many sweet moments between the two, the townspeople, and some little kiddos that I loved. Another fabulous release from Springer!
Jack might look rough around the edges and definitely has a rough past, but has the kindest heart. I loved his humor, selflessness, work ethic, and loyalty. Evie looks all prim and proper, but actually has a lot more to her. I loved seeing how her heart changes and how much she cares for others. Jack had his own changes to undertake as well. The other characters added so much to this story from the Moretti clan to Gin, Raine, and Cody, to the apartment residents, and the church members. I can see a story developing between Officer Ryan and Maggie, so I'm curious if they will be the focus of a future story (hopefully so).
The story was heartfelt, tragic, and very sweet. I pretty much loved it from beginning to end. I didn't enjoy it as much as I did The Dandelion Field, but they have different situations and characters. I loved how the inspiration was woven through this story. So perfect. I also loved the spark between the two main characters and how well the author conveyed meaning without words.
If you enjoy reading Christian Romance or general Romance, I'd definitely recommend THE HEARTS WE MEND. I can't wait to read the next story in this series!

This was my first Kathryn Springer book and my first visit to Banister Falls, If you know me, you know I usually take my love and romance with a bit of zombification, alien intrusion or ghostly possession. Yet whenever there's a fireman involved, I tend to get a bit squishy. In this tale, Evie Bennett is a 25-year old widow and single mom. She's also the Women's Ministry Director, so she's used to telling women how they need to step out on faith and be bold about it. She's a woman in control and knows what to expect... until she meets Jack.
I'm going to tell you- it's hard to find a man like this! Jack Vale put everyone above himself and so Godly, I was nearing jealousy! The story is fun, loving, and emotion-provoking. Springer wrote the story so well, I was in the trenches of their relationship with them! This story is unbelievable and made me wonder if the first book is just as good?
The theme of being able to walk away from the past and move with confidence into God's planned future for us was felt and understood- a theme we all look to apply in our lives. I truly appreciated the gentleness and loved how realistic the characters were, even if some men are dreamy. I may be adding the first book to my library! For a romance, this book is IT! I don't think I've ever given a romance novel 5 specs before, but there's always the first time- Now! On to the next book! Romance, clean, Christian Loved this sweet romance that was also a story of redemption and faith. There were definitely prayers, hope, service, and a lovely story of family, community and most importantly, a very tender sweet attraction. This was such a lovely read about Evie and Jake. Evie's new life without her son, seems empty, but she fills it with helping out Jake and his kind hearted efforts to help others in the poor section of town where he lives. It was sweet to see how the church and family came to see Jake for who he really is, and see how Evie's understanding and attraction to this man of faith helped heal her soul and helped her become who she really needed to be at this point in her life. Lovely story, and loved reading about the building, the garden, and the family and how it all come together to work for good. Beautiful romance topped it all off. Love that I have found another author to read!
AMAZING! :) I usually find contemporary fiction mildly entertaining and will read them every now and again, but there's just something about the way Kathryn writes that always sucks me in and won't let me go! :) I absolutely LOVE her characters! Which is saying something where Evie is concerned! ;) Yes there were times when I just didn't like her very much, but that all changes! :) I truly love how far she comes and her relationship with Jack! I also enjoy and LOVE how Kathryn expresses God's plans and nudgeings! :) Plus getting to see where other characters have ended up and anticipating the next character's stories all wraps together to make a FABULOUS and AMAZING read! :) Beautiful, Faith based contemporary fiction, you can't go wrong with this one!
Songs (God led me to add this first song with this book :) and the last two are taken from the book) : "God Is on the Move" by 7eventh Time Down, "Summertime" sung by Fantasia, and "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)" by Chris Tomlin Songs etc. May be changed and/or added in the future. ~ASC

*I requested and received this book as a member of Litfuse for the purpose of reviewing it. This in no way affected my opinion and the above are my true thoughts and feelings about The Hearts We Mend. ~ASC
This is not the first book by Kathyrn Springer that I've read. I do call her a friend but I don't think that means I can't give an honest review and I did receive my copy from the pbulisher. I can't help it if I have firends who are really good writers too!
This is a tender, roamntic story of two unlikely people falling in love. Some characters are from the first book in the Banister Falls series, The Dandelion Field. The series is set in NE WI, an unusual but beautiful setting.
The hero is a man with a past and the heroine is a woman who lives in the past. The breaking down the barriers that separate them was artfully and realistically portrayed.
One thing I really appreciate about Kathryn Springer's stories is that not everyone is upper middle class with a college education. She has lively and realistic characters that face honest real world problems. But Kathryn does not write about despair but about hope.
I highly recommend this book and the first and any other Kathryn Springer romance you find!
If you want a good book to read and you like contemporary romance, then read this one. Its a series of two books, this being the second, but I think you can get away with reading this by itself, but I highly recommend reading the first one first then this one, only because they are both so so good and you shouldn't deprive yourself. Kathryn Springer has now been added to my list of favorite authors. Definitely pick both of these up, they deal with real life stuff and make you want to live in Bannister Falls and go to the same church and be a part of the same circles of friends and family. The Hearts We Mend ended in a big fat sigh for me. I loved it and I don't want this series to end. I wish there were more of them, but now I am anxious to find out what she has up her sleeve next, I am sure it will be just as good if not better!
This was one of those book I was sad to see it end. I loved these characters in The Dandelion Field (first book in Banister Falls series), and I loved them even more now. This story is one of love, redemption, and growing in God. I knew how I wanted it to end, but I wasn't sure it was actually going to happen. I really hope there is a follow-up with these characters so we can check in on them in the future. *I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.*
This is one of those books that grabbed me from the beginning and didn't let go. I had planned to read about 4 chapters in my first sitting with the book, but the next thing I knew, I had finished 7! Ha! I appreciated the fact that the beginning of this story had a bit of a 'refresher course' on what happened in the first novel ('The Dandelion Field'). I do think it is important to read that one before this one, but you do not need to read them back-to-back to understand what happens with this one. The overarching theme of this novel was two-fold, I think: trust (in God's perfect plan and in the people in your life who are trying their best to follow that plan) and God's way of working things out when there seems no way at all. While I enjoyed meeting Evie in the first novel, and rejoiced in her change of heart toward Gin and Raine, this novel made her truly shine. I love how she was able to look beyond outward appearances and see to the heart, not only of situations, but of people. To be perfectly honest, I'm disappointed that this is the last Banister Falls novel. I really want to know what happens next! 4.5 stars
I didn't read Book 1 and it took me a few minutes to jump into this story. From reading other reviews, it picks up right where Book 1 left off, so I would definitely recommend reading that one first.
Springer has a fun way of writing and delivers a story of hope, warmth, compassion, and second chances. I enjoyed watching Evie come to terms with her life changes--it was enlightening and inspiring. Of course, I loved watching Evie and Jack. Sometimes the best things come from things that cause us to stretch and grow and I felt that's what happened with their relationship, on both sides.
This is a sweet story and I enjoyed being enveloped in its pages for a time.
Content: mild romance; mild+ religion
*I received a complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given*
Wow, what a fantastic book! I haven’t read one this good in a while! I personally really enjoyed Evie and how strong she was even after all the heartbreak she had in her life. Oh my, but Jack, was incredible. He melted my heart so so many times. His trust in the Lord throughout his trials was very eye-opening. I would recommend this book to someone because it is very different than your average love story.... and I loved it!
This book!!!🤩 I love Kathryn Springer's writing! The characters, the places, the relationships, everything seems real! This story follows Evie (Cody's mom from The Dandelion Field) and Jack (he appears briefly in The Dandelion Field, but I'm not sure if his name is given). Watching Evie and Gin's friendship grow was beautiful! And her and Jack getting to know each other! What else can I say?! Gorgeous story! Strong faith thread! I very highly recommend!!!🤩 You won't regret it!!
3.5☆ Ya'll, some of you guys know I'm a sucker for some good Christian fiction. Sadly, this was not it for me. Growing up in small town America, I related to a good bit of it. It all felt like a bit of a reach, though, and the inner turmoil didn't make much sense to me.
Evie Bennet was widowed at age 25 and has spent the last 13 years devoting herself to raising her son. Now that Cody is out on his own, Evie struggles with grasping what her life will look like now. She's been so well taken care of by her lifelong friends and the men at the fire station who worked with her husband. Her life has been singularly focused and very, very safe.
When Jack Vale temporarily takes the job as custodian of Evie's church, he hopes no one finds out about the mess that is his extended family. His brother's struggles with addiction have Jack constantly waiting for devastating news. He wants to show that he's there for Travis and his family, but it's so hard to watch the downward spiral and be unable to do anything to stop it.
When circumstances bring Evie and Jack together, she can't help but be shocked at the impact Jack is having in his neighborhood. While she lives in a beautiful subdivision, he lives in a ratty apartment building where he often serves dinner to anyone who wanders in his door. He helps one high school student with his homework, allows a second shift dad to catch naps on his couch so he won't be woken by his baby, and lets one muscular young man to help him renovate the building rather than using his hulk for disreputable reasons. Throw in his family situation, and Jack is anything but safe. But his outlook on life is slowly turning Evie's on its head.
When Jack realizes how much he's drawn to Evie he's afraid of what that might mean. It's one thing to choose to live in the mess that other people have made, it's another to consider sharing that mess with someone so gentle and kind. As Jack's family situation continues to fall apart, the temptation to turn his heart away from Evie grows stronger, even if she was brave enough to risk opening her heart to him.
This is the second novel in the Bannister Falls series, and I would highly recommend reading the first book, The Dandelion Field, before this one. Not only was The Dandelion Field one of my favorite reads from last year, there are also many characters who were introduced there who reappear in this one. I really enjoy this author and look forward to her future releases!
I received my copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for this honest review. All opinions are my own.
Tattooed, rough-around-the-edges Jack raises quite a few eyebrows in the tight-knit community of Banister Falls. Where Evie's life is stream-lined, Jack's approach to living is moment-by-moment. But as Evie gets drawn into Jack's world—a world that isn't as safe or predictable as the one she's worked so hard to create—he challenges her to open her eyes to the problems outside the walls of the church.
Modern Christian romance is not my favorite genre as I am much more a historical romance, suspense, or cozy fiction girl. But Kathryn Springer knocked my socks off with The Dandelion Field, and she did it once again with this book. First and foremost, her faith thread is always evident throughout the storyline. It is not just a mention here and there, but nuggets of wisdom that made me want to go back and read them a second time.
Springer creates characters that resonate with me long after the book is over. I absolutely LOVED Jack. He is far from perfect but has a heart for God that is filled with caring, compassion, and giving. He is still growing in his faith but always tries to listen for God's will before he steps out. Evie was so special as the ice melts from her frozen-in-time heart after the death of her firefighter husband. It's been many years but she is slowly realizing that she has let her past keep her from moving on in the present.
I am definitely going to be hoping and praying for another book in the Bannister Falls series because I don't want to say goodbye to these wonderful friends. Write on Kathryn!
