In an endless desert floats the Mud Whale, an island city of clay moving by magic, containing a small community where most die young their life spans cut short by their own magic. Chakuro diligently chronicles their lives... This all changes when he meets a young girl and they are suddenly attacked by an Empire! What will be the citizens of Falaina do?!

I have to talk about the plot first because boy did that change directions swiftly! You don't much think about how the world of the Whales has so many rival nations, but in this volume we get up close and personal with a new one. The people of Falaina are pretty excited too and I can't blame them since the people they met previously tried to wipe them off the sands. Lykos and Aima both share some of what they know of the truths about the mud whale and its people and I'm glad to see some truths find the light of day...

GAH!! I love when supernatural creatures come to play in fantasy stories and Kokalo plays a HUGE mega part in the story at this point... I just love what a community setting the mud whale is and how we meet all these different, arguably, minor characters who fuel Chakuro's desire to value everyone. It really makes me care... I felt the losses, I felt the win, I felt the cautious hope!

The art is more and more gorgeous! Really I need every one of these volumes on my shelf. I love and adore the covers, and I keep wanting to flip through the volumes. The digital copies just don't do the art justice. The world of beauty and pain that opens up to us through this art style is just so addicting... This post-apocalyptic fantasy starts at the art and keeps me hooked as the mud whale's world has gotten larger.

What do the visitors from another nation mean to the mud whale?! This question keeps circling as you understand that the leader isn't much different from Lykos brother... The people of Falaina are rather kind and simple so what will happen when that are caught between two powers who want to destroy each other?! Let's just say that this volume sets up a new political situation that puts the pressure on.

Children of the Whales vol 5 is a series that I highly recommend. It isn't too romancy, it has action, it has mystery, it has a human element that will pierce your heart. The magic doesn't come from thin air, each thymia user pays for it on the Faliaina! Chakuro, Ouni and Lykos are the ones that will shape the future of the mud whale and I can't wait to read more...

As this is a multi-volume series my opinion is also influenced by the previous volumes... THERE WILL BE MINOR REFERENCES TO PREVIOUS VOLUME - SO READ WITH CARE! Here is my review of volume 1... and volume 2... and volume 3... and volume 4...

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⋆ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review. It has not influenced my opinions.

The wait for the next instalment is going to be painful.

Still in love with the characters, the artwork, the storyline, the mud whale... ugh, there's nothing to complain about. My favourite manga series, and one of my all-time favourite series in general. I adore it. If you like stories with a calm pace but that still packs in action in the right places, has characters you'll love to hate AND characters you'll love to pieces, and has amazing artwork (though as is the case with a lot of manga, some scenes are a bit more tricky to decipher), I highly highly recommend this!

This was decidedly better than Volume 4. There was no disturbing violence here, which was a relief to me. And I also got some of the answers I was hoping for. However, even though the story is interesting, I’m just not sure it’s enough to keep me going. I think I’m going to take a break from the series, at least for a bit.

Loved this volume! There were some good developments in the world building and interesting advancements in the plot. The world is starting to grow outside the Mud Whale and I’m super excited about it! I don’t have the next volume yet but I’ll have to get my hands on it ASAP!

Warnings: gun violence, mentions of war and genocide

Rep: neurodiverse main character (hypergraphia)

With a new player coming on the board in the form of an outside nation who has had no idea about the Mud Whale or even that it is a penal colony, the residents of Falaina are finally coming in contact with the wider world. The leader of the ship, a nobleman named Rochalizo finds them on the very day that they were all having a bathing festival, leading him to believe they are a nudist tribe or a savage race. While a younger son of a duke with a itch to prove himself doesn't make the best of stable allies, Suou and the others decide to put some (not all mind you) trust in them, and see if it helps them against the Empire. There are some initial clashes, what with Rochalizo wanting to make them his subjects, thinking them to be easy prey, and with some culture shocks (Kuchiba trying so hard to be diplomatic and polite and utterly failing at it was a hoot!), but soon they all are witness to the 'next step' that Olivinis told Chakuro about.

Meanwhile, Orca neatly sidesteps the consequences of his failed attempt to destroy Falaina, while also provoking a stronger sentiment against them, specifically Ouni, who they believe is one of the Daimones. We get a bit of backstory on the difference between the Marked and the Unmarked and the treatment of these two people across the two different countries. But the biggest bombshell - the mystery that was lurking just under our noses - was dropped, about the nature of Nous Falaina. To be honest, I feel stupid like Chakuro to not have put the pieces fully together earlier - I was only like, why did they not need to feed it emotions like the apatheia ships? but damn that ending was a nice shock to me.

In short, a volume filled with more threads and reveals, and hinting at bigger conflicts to come.

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Viz Media LLC, via Edelweiss.

"Ch.17 A ship approaches Falaina and mayor Suou heads to the beach to say hello. It seems that the passengers of the ship want to make the people of Falaina their subjects. Sir Rochalizo is their leader from the United Kingdom of Suidelasia. The Commander takes over and disarms them so they have to surrender. Meanwhile the Allied Empire condems Commander Orca, Captain Arachni and 100 soldiers of Skyros to death..."
"Ch.18 Commander Orca stands trial in front of the Ekklisia. He manages to convince them that a second destruction will come after the first that was called Kathartirio. There was a third kind of people except the marked and the unmarked, long forgotten, the Dainonas. Very powerful able to destroy even the Nouses. Ouni was one of them. He blames Arachni for the defeat and promises to capture the Daimonas."
"Ch.19 The people of the Mud Whale try to be friendly towards the newcomers, believing they have a new ally, even though Sir Rochalizo behaves like they are his subjects. Aima uses Kokalo to steer the Falaina and all the marked can collectivelly steer the ship from now on with a common prayer. Only Lycos seems sceptic.."
"Ch.20 Nezu, Ro and Chakuro are given a tour around the Amonlogia vessel which seems to be based on technology rather than Thymia. Ouni can't use his Thymia and the dark twins Shikoku and Shikon find the chance to scorn him for helping the Unmarked. The Falaina is revealed to have been caged by a current all these years but now with Kokalo as the wheel they head for the barrier of their prison East. Lycos has a talk with Rochi about the cause of the Mud Whale's people short life expectancy. Chakuro overhears the conversation..."
The story gets better and more engaging as we meet new characters and expand our knowledge of this world.

For this volume, I am going to allow myself to be carried by the waves of sand which the mud whale glides upon...
Honestly, I felt pretty at ease with this volume. Something about it felt both comical and very comfortable. There are parts in which I find myself a bit confused and I can't tell whether it's due to a small break from the last volume or if I'm missing something. Nonetheless, a lot of gaps are beginning to fill in. The secrets to the mud whale are beginning to truly uncover, and Chakuro is bearing witness to the lot of it. As they gain more information of the secrets the elders sought to hide (for the happiness and health of the people on the mud whale), the people of the mud whale seem to coincidentally gain powers as well. Now... I have a following pondering but it contains spoilers.

What a stunning cover! A shared dream reveals a new power the marked have over their once rudderless Mud Whale. Chakuro is floored by a dire revelation. And, holy heck, the wildly imaginative backgrounds and Sea of Sand design really get turned up this volume. The meeting with new strangers makes some challenging starts and fits. Considering the problems the Mud Whale just encountered I was surprised how easy and eager Mayor Suou is to get in their good graces. Then their was Orca’s spinning of tales to save himself before his superiors with a new dark agenda towards the Children. This is a more subdued, but no less engaging volume.

Ugh, this series... it makes me feel things. So many things.

Also, can we please talk about the art?! For fuck's sake, the detail is astounding and the style is so unique and gorgeous and I have had my jaw drop at least once every volume. 10/10, it's definitely making it impossible for me to flip pages madly because I'm too busy gawking at the Mud Whale's new-

Well. That's too much a spoiler to write out and I'm too lazy to format on mobile. Anyway. I'm far too invested in these people (especially Ouni, who still has my heart) and the art and the story so onto the next I go. I can only hope to retain my sanity because the plot is really starting to go places now.

I said in my review of Vol. 4 that I thought that I might be done with this series. I gave Vol. 5 a shot. I am still having difficulty discerning who is who as the panels progress. And being confused is not something that I generally enjoy being as a reader.

That being said, these CIRC fairly well at my library. So I think that I will continue to purchase this series as volumes come out.

I really can't find any fault to this manga!
I forgot to say how much I love the fact that the author uses Ancient Greek vocabulary in her series!

This has been a cute ride and the art style is suuuuper gorgeous, but the story hasn’t gripped me. We’ve got enough answers now to the nature and reasons for the mud whale, so I’m going to leave this series here for now. I may revisit this in the near future when the urge strikes me.
