From the author of Midnight in Jackie's Garden comes Feather and Bone, a volume of short stories that will pull you into the darkest recesses of your childhood memories and into the realm of shadows and psychotic nightmares.
"Don't you know where you are? Why, this is Hell's End, my man. This is home. This is the dark spaces inside the cabinets — the places where dull lights from single bulbs never reach. This is the place where all your old friends are waiting for you, waiting back in the shadows." - Excerpt from He Turns His Back - Feather and Bone
Wayne is living the dream in Safety Harbor, Florida with his wife Brandie. He is a musician, an artist, and a writer. His next novel is expected to be available in 2021.
Fourteen short stories that are mainly (but not exclusively) in the vein of horror. Subject matter ranges from the the supernatural to the psychological. Standouts for me included the final two stories, He Turns His Back and Rattling Bones. Both are chillers. Each story includes a dark illustration by the author.
Yes! This was perfect for my Halloween reading plans. At the very end I was left with images from Jack Nicholson in The Shining, trudging through the snow with an axe in his hand.
To be fair, there were 3 or 4 stories in the collection that weren't that great, so if I could I would give this a 4.5. Still, the first story, "Murder of Crows", the middle story "Midnight in Jackies Garden", and the last three in the collection were great. I like the way the author inserted prose at the end and beginning of most of them that also tied some of them together. I caught the link between "Aimless" and "Arm of Gideon". The author also provided some of his own artwork at the beginning of each story. If your looking for a good Halloween read, this is it.
This was a fantastic collection of short stories by new author, Wayne Barrett. The collection includes fantasy, mystery and some thriller/horror shorts. I enjoyed every story, which doesn't always happen when I read short story collections.
"It was a tear but appeared like a black pearl in her eye Hell hath no fury especially when ruled by a queen taken on a black wing sky."
There is great art work and poems at the beginning and sometimes at the end of every story, also done by the author, giving it a great touch to the stories.
The first story in the collection, A Murder of Crows, was a dark thriller and fantasy. The story, to me, was one that could be turned into a novel. I hope that it was only a teaser and the author continues on with the story someday. It is one I would love to see continued.
In all this was a great collection and I enjoyed it thoroughly. This is one new author I'm sure to follow and hope he comes out with more work soon. *a murder of crows, hint hint!*
A masterfully written collection of short stories. Fit to challenge some of Stephen King's best work. Some of these stories, like "He Turns his Back" left me horrified and wanting more! A definite page turner, with a great mix of horror, suspense, and psychological thrillers. A must read!!!
I loved this book! If you enjoy short stories that make you think, pick this one up. Every story takes you into a different world and you may not be able to put it down. I look forward to many more books from this talented author.
This book is a real page turner. Although I don’t usually read mystery/horror books, I really enjoyed this one. Wayne is a super talented author and (as well as an artist). He really kept my interest, there was a few times I was not sure what was coming next. Well written, I highly recommend!
A unique collection of different short stories for, in my opinion, a little bit of each different type of reading preferences, each story is very different, some will give you chills! I enjoyed every bit of it.
I won this from a Goodreads giveaway and didn't like the first story, but most of the short stories I did like in this book, and it inspired my terror. I recommend it if you're a fan of the genre.
I was happy to win a Kindle copy of this book through #GoodreadsGiveaway.
This book consisted of 14, mostly dark horror short stories. I really enjoyed 4 of the stories. The others I didn’t love or hate, they just were average to me.
