SIX MONTHS AGO Beata "Beatrix" Garncarek was attacked by a demon. Now, no one in the Inner City will explain what it was, not even her Guardian, the Minister for Research and Medicine. In search of answers, she begins running away to the Outer City, hoping to find the cause of her encounter.
SIX MONTHS AGO Aleksandr Isayev awoke with no memories and inexplicable mutations all over his body. Despite these disturbing new changes, he clings to the façade of a normal life and a desk job rather than face the unknown.
THEIR PATHS CROSS BY CHANCE
Beatrix is convinced that Aleksandr holds the answers she's looking for. To get to them, however, she must convince him to confront his lost memories. As dreams of stardust and lost, mysterious voices grow ever louder, Aleksandr soon realises that more than just his past is waiting for him to wake up.
Surrounding them both?
MORGRAD
The split city and Yevra's capital. A centrepiece for scientific research and medical innovation. But secrets lie within the smog, lurking beneath the factories and hospitals and, threatening to boil over and reveal just how deeply two strangers' lives are entwined by elaborate, cosmic, experiments.
A dystopian science fiction story with cosmic entities and unravelling mysteries, 'Stardust of Morgrad' is the debut series of Revy L Preston.
Revy L Preston would argue they have been creative writing for as long as they’ve been able to hold a pencil, but thankfully nothing from before the age of nineteen shall ever see the light of day. Born in a circle of hell just north of London, they graduated with a BA in Russian and Spanish from the University of Leeds in 2018. After job-hopping for a bit, they returned to the sweet embrace of academia with both an MA and PhD from Aston University, specialising in TESOL. They are a self-taught artist, former Model UN Sec-Gen, avid reader, and cringe-fail anime nerd in the little spare time they have.
So I have watched Revy write this book from the very first draft of the prologue and I'm not about to pretend I haven't read this whole thing through as they were writing it, but damn it has been SUCH a ride and it's honestly quite wild that Morgrad is FINALLY out. So while it's practically impossible for me to write remain impartial when it comes to this book, and some things are so jumbled about in my mind that it's hard to tell what is and isn't a spoiler, but I'll do my best.
First of all, my favorite thing about Revy's writing has always been their prose. They know how to paint such beautiful (and sometimes very beautifully ugly) pictures with their words, and I always can't help but feel entirely immersed in the scene they're creating. Every word they choose down to the letter was chosen with incredible love and care and hard work which really does show in the final product. Description is where Revy shines, style-wise, and for a book like this where there are many different scenes where proper description could either make or break how certain things land, they really do well here.
With that said, we have the dual protagonists. Sasha is a tired amnesiac with a whole plot thrust upon him, while Beatrix is inquisitive but naive, and cannot seem to wrap her head around the concept of NOT having a plot that revolves around her. This makes for a very interesting dynamic between the two, who come from different backgrounds with different (and sometimes clashing) priorities and perspectives. But for reasons that escape them both, their paths cross, and suddenly they're thrown into discovering conspiracy upon conspiracy until they realize they must work together to uncover all these mysteries that hit closer to home than they initially think...
Anyway, not to get too long winded or sentimental, but this book is very important to me, not just because Revy is my friend (though, that does play an important part of it). And I hope you, reading this review, come to love it too.
Right from the very beginning Revy spares no detail to paint a full and immersive picture (and as someone who suffers from aphantasia this is the crème de la crème when it comes to books) that grips you by the lapels and doesn’t let you go until the very last page. You’re never left wondering who? What? When? Where? Why? in a bad way. If you are left wondering all it does is spur you on to find answers!!!
What I really like is that there aren’t an overwhelming amount of locations, plot points and characters to try to keep up with, there’s no turning back going ‘wait who were they? Where is that again? Wait, when did this happen?’ Which I find can happen quite frequently for me with this genre of books.
What I love about books is you’re happily reading and then a plot point just comes and slaps you in the face. In this book however they hit me like a freaking freight train and I LOVED IT!!!!!!
I have developed quite an attachment to some of these lovely characters (the nasty ones know who they are *coughAgatacough*) and when I finished the book it was like saying goodbye to a friend you won’t see for a while 😔
