The final instalment in the Spark Trilogy is absolutely breathtaking. Rachael Craw is an exquisite storyteller, creating an intelligent and intricate narrative that will captivate and consume readers until the final page.

Evie is an intense and fiercely devoted heroine, a girl who has survived The Infinity Project and now returning to the compound where change in policy is fermenting, a potential cure for the Stray mutation is on the horizon. This time Evie is unsure of who to trust.

Evie is a formidable character. She's tenacious but still remains charismatic and pragmatic. She's conflicted when it comes to Jamie and her controversial attraction to her fellow Shield in Jamie, her Aunt Miriam still remains silent on her enhanced bandwidth and being the child of a Synergist relationship ensures Evie's impeccable pedigree, hiding her true identity from Knox who will ensure Evie's life is never her own. Beyond the realm of The Infinity Project and their rigorous legislation, Shield also touches on Evie's basic freedoms of owning her own body as The Infinity Project determines approval for relationships and pregnancy.

Leader Knox is a fascist and his internal conflict with Ethan only fuelled the intensity throughout the storyline. Ethan is determined to protect Evie, especially while Miriam lies unresponsive. Evie's relationship with Ethan begins to develop, gently, tentatively and was lovely to experience. Ethan is integral to The Affinity Project, which often amplifies the tension placed upon his familial bonds.

The secondary characters were superb and so wonderfully written, Davis especially. Davis is a character who captivated my attention, his maturity and vulnerability was incredibly charming. Despite my previous animosity towards her character, Helena's character was wonderful and I've discovered a new found appreciation for who she is as an individual, furthermore to her connection with Jamie.

The romance.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Hot. The connection between Evie and Jamie is intense, sultry and incredibly awkward. Hilariously so. Jamie has an opportunity to deactivate and despite his own safety, wants nothing more than to share his life with Evie. Their friendship and tentative relationship throughout the series has been fiercely passionate while the physical aspects of their bond, tender and gratifying.

The greatest aspect of the Spark series is the writing. Rachael Craw has created an engaging and utterly captivating narrative. Evie is magnificent, maturing and adapting while allowing readers to share her journey of evolution and self discovery. The romance is achingly beautiful, the intimate scenes breathtaking.

Rachael Craw is an exceptional author and has crafted a sensational series that will enthral and enchant readers.

This has been an entertaining trilogy, with some real high octane moments of excitement and drama. Evie is once again our MC and her enhanced DNA make her very valuable to the Affinity Project, top secret involving those with the special powers they were born with, but only realise they have until their late teens.

All the main characters from the first two books are here along with a whole lot more. There is so much going on, most of which I did not understand, but really had no real impact on the story or outcomes. I found it all too busy, to convoluted, yet exciting and engaging at the same time. An ambitious futuristic trilogy by Kiwi Rachael Craw, just wish it hadn't been so messy. 3 stars.

You know when you’re struggling towards a goal, but endless roadblocks are thrown in the way? That has been Evie’s journey throughout the Spark series.

The biggest blockades to her living the life she wants, are the people who make up the Affinity Project. Being a genetically enhanced weapon, Evie is constantly pulled from pillar to post. Everyone acts like they have a say in what she wants to do and who she wants to be, and I was quite annoyed at the adults in the novel at times. In Shield, there’s Knox who wants to breed her for his own science project, and others who want to protect and observe her skills. Can we just let her make her own decisions?

From the young teenager we met in Spark to the strong, resilient woman that we see today, I loved Evie’s character development throughout the series. Shield gives her some defining moments, where she acts on her own instinct much to others’ dismay. I was thankful for her journey throughout the series, where she demonstrates her strength, courage and leadership against all odds.

After reading and loving Spark and Stray, the first 2 books in the series, I actually struggled quite a bit with Shield. Blame it on my bookish amnesia, I actually couldn’t remember a lot of the more scientific concepts behind the DNA manipulation and the Affinity Project. With concepts such as the KMT , synergist connections, de-activations, sparks, proxies and coolers being used throughout the book, not much is recapped or explained again. It builds upon prior knowledge that the reader has gained from following the series, with more concepts being thrown in and expanded upon. While the first book felt a bit info-dumpy with the genetic mutation, I felt Shield went the other way and could’ve fared with with more recapping or explanation of what these concepts were.

Much of the fun and friendship with Kitty was missed in this book, along with the motherly protection of Miriam and even Jamie’s flirtatious passes. Things are a lot more serious this time around, as Evie is dealing with grief and being separated from her loved ones. There’s a lot of angst and jealousy here, over the ‘other girl’ Helena, and there’s definitely a lot to work out between Evie, Jamie and Helena. I was thankful for Davis, a handsome and caring friend who helps Evie through some of her tougher times in the novel, given everything else that was happening.

As Evie discovers the origins of her makeup and the multiple goals behind the Affinity Project, there’s a lot of secrets and reveals in the novel. The plot is complex and mind-boggling with no single focus.

Shield is a complex exploration into the effects of DNA manipulation for science and power. With the absence of some of Evie’s loved ones, it felt darker and heavier than previous books. There are some great defining moments in the book however, and Evie proves to be a brilliant role model for someone escaping her circumstances. Because some of the scientific concepts went over my head, I think re-reading or reading these books consecutively would help with it’s complexity.

I received a review copy in exchange for an honest review.

MY MIND HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY BLOWN. MOVE OVER MRS MAAS, MRS COLLINS, BECAUSE RACHAEL CRAW IS IN THE HOUSE.

I don't think I can ever look at another book the same again. MRS CRAW HAS SET THE BAR TOO HIGH. The second half of the book has officially blown my mind.

Me at 90%:

Fight scenes:

description

Things I absolutely adored in Shield:
- I loved learning more about Affinity's politics.
- Seeing Evie's character as well as her relationship with Ethan develop.
- I really badly wanted to hate Juno but I couldn't help but love her when she sassed and did the deed.

description

- I wanted to hate Helena but found it harder to once we got to know her character.
- It was good to see Davis' character develop and get to know him some more... I started getting attached to him and I'm internally going nopenopenope because I had a feeling Rachael would go tear him out of our hands and make our little bookworm hearts bleed. FORTUNATELY, mercy was given.
- EVERYTHING.

My general opinion of Shield and the series in general:

description

Seriously. The writing is absolutely beautiful. The plotline is developed. I have never gotten so emotionally attached to characters in my life. Character development is on point. Cover art is absolutely stunning. COLD HARD FACTS PEOPLE.

I got everything I wanted and more from Shield. Legit trembling from that ending.

Thank you so much for blessing us with such an awesome series, Rachael! You're always super nice to your #SparkArmy and are an inspiration to all us aspiring authors. I cannot wait to see what you produce next!!! :D

As others have said, the saddest part is not being able to wait another year for the next Spark book.

description

I think I need to go reread some of my favourite scenes now (and go make some pathetic looking Spark decorations for my room, XD). This is probably my favourite book of it time now.

--------

Oh my god! We have a cover reveal! Eeeeeeeeeeeeek

It's beautiful!!!! Can't... type... properly.....

I NEED IT NOW. I CAN'T LAST UNTIL SEPTEMBER AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Edit:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BIj1MYiAe... - Have you people seen this!? Signing event!? Advanced copies of Shield?! Book marks!? And of course, a chance to meet the writing goddess, Rachael Craw!? *Gets out piggy bank, grabs hammer, smashes open* I must purchase a ticket down to Christchurch immediately! Ah well... at least flights from Auckland to Christchurch don't cost THAT much, right? ;_; Oh who cares, it's Rachael Craw!

Edit2:

Why must everything happen on August 27th? Couldn't you be moved over just one other day so I can spend most of my savings to fly down to Christchurch? I suppose I'll have to go purchase a copy when it gets officially released ;_;

Shield was one of the strongest conclusions to a trilogy that I have ever read - an emotional and thrilling end to an already brilliant series. The great thing about these books is that they read very much like a movie, there isn't a dull moment in them and because of that, they make great binge read material. Which is me trying to justify that I read both Stray and Shield over the span of 24 hours. Moving along...

Rachael Craw continued to utilise her magic combination of characters, world building and plot to create a fantastic story in Shield. These books are strong because of the fact that Craw doesn't rely on just one element to drive the story, but instead wields all of them with impressive deft. We continue to learn more about the roots of Affinity and the histories of the characters introduced in Stray whilst simultaneously witnessing the impact that the ending of the second book had on all our characters.

This book focused more on the political aspects of Affinity and whilst that was super interesting (evil corporations usually are), it was not as high-paced and action packed as the second book (which, thinking back, was probably beneficial because I don't think my emotions would have handled another battering a la Stray).

Now onto the juicy stuff: Evie and Jaime.

I talk about their relationship in every single one of the my reviews on this trilogy but Evie and Jaime's relationship was hotter than ever in this book and I cannot get enough. It may just be me, but I adore forbidden romances and the tension between Evie and Jaime hits breaking point in Shield. It is so addictive to read about, with the tension off-setted by how delightfully awkward they are around each other as they try to act like everything is normal. Also doesn't help when a certain female from Jaime's past makes a reappearance ;). Speaking of, we are introduced to a few new characters in the novel who are as complex and as interesting as all the ones we have been introduced to thus far. Davis, who I never dreamed of liking in Stray, really grew on me in Shield, exemplifying Craw's spectacular character development and writing abilities. The only point of disappointment character-wise was that Kitty was not included as much as she was in the first book, which makes logical sense considering the story arc, but I missed seeing her and Evie's interactions because their relationship was so sweet and empowering.

All in all, this was a strong concluding novel to the fantastic trilogy that is Spark. I highly, HIGHLY recommend these books to everyone - especially if you are in the market for some quality YA Sci-Fi! The world-building, characterisation and plot twists are done fantastically time and time and again and I guarantee that these are books you will be adding to your favourites lists if given the chance.

I was so impressed with this author's debut, thrilled when the sequel proved so strong, but now -- oh -- now I can scarcely believe this entire tale was a beginning for Craw since the final installment bears no marks of inexperience -- how she has honed her writing! For those awaiting Book 3's release in two short weeks, assured be, your pre-order money is well-spent; you will not be disappointed. I chomped through the pages and came away impressed and satisfied;

*Reviewing the online glossary for the world of Spark was sufficient refresher for me to fall back into this story and quickly care about the characters again. I remembered much of the details from the previous two books without re-reading because the story arcs of both are memorable.
*I loved picking up where things left off with the central characters. There's all of this hankering going on and it is a treat quickly delivered for fans. Furthermore, having a male love interest who offers unfailing loyalty instead of snark? Thank you, Rachael! Ladies, take note, good guys can be attractive.
*And the heroine? A delicate balance of feisty and fallible. I especially like when she says and does things I am willing her to do but doubt anyone would do...oh wait, Evie would. Also: Sometimes protagonists who are coincidentally and conveniently Super bug me; but Craw has succeeded in creating a cathartic pleasure in Evie's BA-ness; I don't roll my eyes when she is stronger and better than everyone else, I inwardly scream, "Take that! Don't mess with Evie!" It's good writing to have me so on-side and unquestioning.
*The relationship trees, nay, webs of the story manage to be fun instead of contrived or confusing.
*The short exchange dialogue remains en pointe! It's sharp, smart and current. The lengthier conversations are juicy too, enhanced by thoughtful consideration of each person's motivations and angle.
*Early on there are a few dream recounts. A lot of the time I find dream recounts superfluous. These weren't.
*I enjoyed the politics of the story and the level of world complexity -- it had enough dimension to make it more than a tough female fighting a system (what system mattered), but not so much that it bogged down the momentum;
*...which would be a travesty, since the pacing of the novel is one of its finest features. I love that this book spits out bookmarks mercilessly, denying any page as a fitting home for such a thing. Books 1 and 2 were also well-paced, but they relied on novelty, suspense and well-plotted twists for such effect. Although Book 3 is less novel (we know the world), less suspenseful (we know what we want to happen and hope hard at least 75% of this will be delivered) and certainly less twisty, it is probably the most riveting. Instead it is a story that sets off running, and doesn't take breaks. That device works too.
*I'm not at all surprised Spark is already optioned for the screen, Shield continues to read very cinematically.
* If you haven't tried this series yet, you're in for the late-comers' delight of a) no wait between title releases and b) the promise the entire journey you're about to embark on is good from beginning to end. Lucky you -- you need not even go out on a limb and worry you'll be left on a bouncy twig with nowhere else to climb! It's all solid, friends. Isn't it a huge bonus that the covers are STUNNING?!
*Isn't it a huge bonus that the covers are stunning?! Good shelf candy.
*If I had to say there was anything I look forward to seeing polished in future works, it is the resonance and uniqueness of the villain; at some point during my reading the bad guy morphed into an alter ego of The Hunger Games' Snow. This isn't the worst comparison to have made, especially since it's the only note I feel is worth giving.

Overall, Shield has left me excited. I wasn't sorry when I closed my review copy that it was all said and done, because Rachael Craw isn't all said and done; her latest tight, confident crescendo work may end this series, but is not the grande finale. I am looking forward to what YA page-turner she delivers next.

Shield is in bookstores September 1. Review copy received from Walker.

Wow. Just Wow.
Seriously Rachael. Are You TRYING To Kill Me??

Such an emotional ending to an amazing series. I really don't want it to end :(

This book was full of so many surprises. The things I had suspected had come into place.
Gosh, Idek what to write XD

Evie is such a strong character. I admire her strength even in the hardest of times. And her relationship with Jamie. Oh Jamie. Jamie. Jamie. Jamie. Every fangirls dream guy. I cried when I though he had died.
Oh and the shared dream. Or shared hallucination. Telepathic Link. So emotional.

I loved all the characters! Well except for Knox and Stephanie and all them. And I know some people may disagree but I'm not an extreme fan of Juno or "Councillor Thurston". Even with everything she did. I still think it was for her own well being. But I could be wrong. We'll never know... Unless.
Unless...
Unless..!
UNLESS..!
RACHAEL PLEASE. LISTEN TO ME. YOU NEED TO WRITE ANOTHER BOOK IN THIS SERIES!!!
Okay Calm Down *Dosent calm down because who in the history of calming down, has anyone ever calmed down by being told to calm down*

And throw in some drama and knowing you, death. Get to bathe in our heartbreak and pain again (Even though you deny ever doing anything like it... Hmmmmm). Please. Please. Please. Please. Pleasssssssssse.

See, I even started a new hashtag ^^
You gotta do it now. If you don't I will eat my blue, red, green and yes my PURPLE SOCKS!!

I can't believe that mine/Evie's spark journey has ended (Maybe ;-)) <- Double smiley face, come on, who can say no to that?!)
I'm gonna miss reading this series *starts to sob quietly* I already know this is gonna be a re-read and re-read and re-read series for me *gets emotional and starts quivering in a corner* ( <- Don't mind the awkward bookworm crying in the corner guys)

Rachael, look what your putting me/us through?? How would Evie feel about you ending her story there?? (Yes. I played the Evie card)

Okay, like always I have no idea how to finish this review soooo, yeah...

Well except for Knox and Stephanie and Razor-bob
But you get what I mean
These characters were amazing and I found myself yearning for more of them
When I finished the book I found that I had literally found and made a place for them in my sole
Now there are pieces missing (sobbing)
:-(

I love Davis and the way his character developed and his relationship with Evie
Although they are coolers he didn't want it and they stayed great friends
That was great
And when I started the book I found myself wanting to hate Helena
But when her character developed I found that I just couldn't
Especially after what she did for Evie !!

And Jamie, oh Jamie where do I start
There were some major fan-girling, a major crush forming further and major heart stopping moments over Him in this book
He is just one stunning guy #HOTTY

I just couldn't bear the thought of anyone dying
Than there was Ethan
What an amazing guy
I loved that he turned out to be Evie's father and Miriam her mum and them being Synergists
You are a truly amazing author Rachael and on behalf of the whole Spark Army I want to thank you

I am totally shattered. I think all my emotions have poured out of my eyes and streamed out of my nose. I don't even know how I feel.

Shield was, I think, much darker than the other books. There was a sense of desperation and urgency and defeat and- surprisingly- hope to the story that I wasn't prepared for.

It was action-packed, with vivid imagery, and graphic detail that was like falling into the book or experiencing KMT.

My favourite scenes were the ones with Ethan and Evie. My heart was so full I thought it may burst. That beautiful, fragile father-daughter relationship just killed me.

And the writing! Next. Level. Rachael's writing was always great, but the journey, and the honing of her craft during this series is mind-blowing.

And THAT ENDING.

Rachael Craw sure knows how to end a series with a bang! There's a bittersweet feeling which came with turning the final pages of this book, but I was left as impressed as I have been since the trilogy began.

In this high-octane page-turner, Evie is once again up against the Affinity Project, and in closer proximity than ever before. With the introduction of some new faces, and the duplicitous nature of some characters becoming known, a twist is never too far away. She once again demonstrates a strength and ability to seriously kick-butt, but a sensitivity to the delicate, and seemingly futile situation of her fate. There are moral dilemmas to face, more lives at stake, and of course - opportunities to blow things up. Action, emotions and family loyalty are all on the line, executed on a knife-edge with the skill one has come to expect from Rachael Craw.

When it comes to Evie's issues with Affinity, Jamie isn't too far behind. The pair in this installment have more tension between them than ever before. Their bond is clearly electric, modeled into their DNA. Yet of course, nothing is that easy to attain in this world where your destiny is instilled in your blood, with the constant threat of exploitation. If you want to see more of Jamie, it definitely helped to read the novella 'Scar Tissue' before reading this book. Family ties are also tested, with an even greater intensity. How far would you go to save the people you love? What is the ultimate sacrifice? Craw explores these themes in ways which make your heart race, always in anticipation for the next bombshell to hit. Top tip: Have tissues ready.

FINAL THOUGHTS

What a journey it's been! I still remember first receiving SPARK in the mail 2 years ago, and though it definitely had the potential to be a great read just from looking at the blurb, little did I know how much I would come to love the series and want to support it so much.

As an author, Rachael Craw is a class act; creating storylines with immense suspense, action-packed scenes and sentences which evoke every human emotion. Her characters have so much depth, and you can't help but be drawn into their complex web of dilemmas, following their paths with bated breath. It's the end of an era for the #SparkArmy, but I can't wait to read what she has in store for us next!

I am a little in awe of Mrs Craw. She blasted onto the literary scene with Spark, hit us in the guts with Stray and now here comes Shield. Shield is only her third novel but it’s such an accomplished one, you’d think she’d been doing this for 15 years. Like me. Except she’s better than me.
Full disclaimer: Mrs Craw and I are writing buddies. We occasionally have writing races on Twitter (mostly when I was writing full-time last year) and we’ve swapped books and mindless trivia. We share many things in common, particularly a love for all things Joss Wheldon and she introduced me to Stranger Things and for that, I will be always in her debt.
I digress. Back to Shield. It’s a great conclusion to a trilogy, satisfying like a belly full of mashed potato and gravy and a pint of lager. Both had something in common: I needed a lie down afterwards.
You can tell that Mrs Craw, like me, loves her movies. The scenes unfold like an action packed screen play. I have addiction problem when it comes to action scenes and because of this, felt compelled to keep reading Shield. Saying that, there wasn’t as much action as the second book, Stray, but still – plenty enough for me.
Her characters are well imagined, her world building skills continue to grow. I was fascinated by all the details of Affinity and the backstories of her characters. Although probably not as invested in the love angle of Evie and Jaime and the tension between them as others, it still felt real to me and it’s the true reason why so many readers love Mrs Craw’s work.
A fantastic conclusion. Highly recommended.

The spine tree is complete and it’s beautiful!

It’s been a long journey from being introduced to Evie’s world after getting my copy of Spark from the only Goodreads giveaway I’ve ever won to now having just finished Shield, and oh boy what a journey it’s been! From the point of closing the cover on Stray almost a year ago to holding Shield in my hands for the first time the excitement has been steadily building. My excitement had built to the point that I was worried that it wouldn’t live up to the hype I’d generated; fortunately for me it did live up to it! As with the Spark and Stray, Shield has been a thrilling page turner from cover to cover which had me reading it up until I had to force myself to stop at 3 am.

For the last two months I’ve been trying to sort out how I wanted to word my thoughts about Shield but it’s been a difficult task. A task made difficult because…I LOVED EVERYTHING! I loved the characters and all associated the relationships and friendships. I loved all the Affinity Project politics. I even grew to like Helena despite how hard I ship Evie and Jamie. I really wish I could make this review longer but there’s only some many times I can say I loved everything so I’m just going to stop now.

Shield is an amazingly written end to this beautiful series and I can’t wait to read what Rachael has for us in the future.

I can't believe Evie's story is finally at an end!!!!!!
I want to scream, I want to cry, I want to rejoice, I want another book!!!!!
From the first chapter of the first book, I was hooked. I fell in love with the whole story!! I don't want it to end, I don't want to stop reading about Evie and Jamie, or Miriam and Ethan or Kitty or Davis or Helena!!!! I just don't!!!
But the whole idea of DNA being something else, something that has love, lies, loss and more love lurking around every corner, just makes my day. Nothing can beat this book's plot!! I enjoyed every moment of every book, and sadly, it has come to an end.
I know Evie and Jamie will do great things in the future. I know that she will have Jamie, Miriam, Ethan, Kitty, Davis and all the others there to support her. I just know it!!!
Thank you so much Rachael Craw for creating such a mind blowing, wonderful, suspense-filled, tear-filled adventure for everyone to enjoy...I know I certainly did!!

F**k! My mind is in smithereens. I don't usually write reviews or post comments (mostly for the sake of accidental spoilers and my inability to form coherent thoughts after a book bender) but holy frick frack! Coherent or not, that was a roller coaster ride of emotions and I am in awe. I cannot emphasise enough how much I loved the growth of Evie's character throughout this series, especially in Shield. It got better with every book and Shield just wrecked me in the best way (did that sound dirty? Sorry, I'm agitated).

There are too many things to note about this book so I will sum up my feelings with a poem:

Good.
So good.
I'm good.
Goodnight.

It was an actionpack, full of feeling ending and I enjoy every single page

This review contains does not really contain spoilers for previous books in the series.

The finale of this amazingly unique series was certainly one of my most anticipated of 2016 – for me this is a series of shallowness and depth – and I was dying to delve into both!

Let me start by explaining the shallowness. I am happy to admit that I am rather superficial when it comes to this series, and the fault lies in equal parts to the publisher, the author and me. The first of the shallowness is the cover – OMG! This series has some of the most beautiful in todays YA market. The colours, the drama, the spine tree – just – WOW!!!! I will never stop loving these covers, and I am happy to admit that. And while the publisher is to blame for the cover shallowness/love, the next I can’t decide if the fault lays with Rachael or myself – but I am going with Rach ;) It all boils down to one word – Ethan. I adore Ethan! And Rachael is to blame for that (obviously) but I will admit that it may have something to do with the fact that there was finally an age appropriate character for me to drool over – it’s hard being an “older” person who loves YA… it gets rather icky to have a book boyfriend who is so much younger than you really are. So, I will always be in Rachael’s debt for Ethan (but there will be more about that later).

So with all my shallowness and superficialness out of the way, let’s focus on the depth! And there is so much of it in this series!!! I have to say, this series just keeps getting better and better. I have always enjoyed the writing in this series, but by this final book, Rachael has certainly cemented her style and storytelling abilities. Naturally science still plays a part in this world, but it is flawlessly written into the storyline without over-riding the real story, the characters are true to themselves even in the most strenuous of circumstances, and the arc is flawlessly completed.

Spark and Stray were certainly a ride, with lots of forbidden feelings, revelations, secrets, deaths and shocks - and now in Shield Evie has to make a choice; submit to Affinity and give up all she loves and her freewill, or to fight the system that wants to take it all from her.

She must choose between becoming Affinity, or taking down Affinity. Take a guess which one she chooses?

Evie, although flawed, has found herself and her strength. I am not going to lie, at times she frustrated me, but she remained true to herself and her beliefs, and god-damn I respect her for that. She continues to go through a lot, but she doesn’t (generally) whinge and whine about her situation - she accepts what is and if she doesn’t like it, she gets out there and does something about it. She is bad-ass, fierce and full of sass - don’t get me wrong, she isn’t fearless, and that makes her that much more likeable.

The strength of this story always has and continues to be the characters and their relationships. The relationships in this series are real - they are messy and complicated and true. I adored the awkwardness, the sadness, the banter, the complexity and the resolve surrounding each and every one. The feels are real people - they are real! In this crazy DNA driven world, the relationships and emotions are real, and that is an amazing thing to retain in a story that is so driven by science.

I once said that Spark whispers sweet nothings in your ear - and as much as that was true, the true gem of this series is the sugar coated candy that Shield delivered! And by sugar coated candy, I clearly mean ETHAN SHIRTLESS!!! Anyone who has eyes knows that I went on a one-woman mission to get a shirtless Ethan scene: hounding Rachael at every opportunity (and some self-made opportunities) for the eye-candy that is Ethan without a shirt. Don’t get me wrong, a shirtless Jamie isn’t bad, but I am not a teen and here was finally an age appropriate character I could ogle, if only this stoic, dedicated, loyal, tattooed German man would just take off his god-damned shirt! #shirtlessEthan became a mission for me. And Rachael DELIVERED!!! OH. MY. GOD! She totally delivered and I seriously LOVED it! I re-read this scene over and over and over again to the point I was unsure if I would ever get to the end of the book lol. So now #shirtlessEthan is not just a dream, it is in my dreams! I cannot thank Rachael enough for giving me this little piece of tattooed heaven J

Filled with twists, desperation, politics, determination and complexity - Shield is the perfect ending to this amazingly unique and intriguing world. There is heartbreak, joy, fear, betrayal and perseverance. Everyone has something to gain or lose - freewill.

You will not be disappointed with the conclusion of this epic trilogy. I was sad to say goodbye, but that did not stop me from loving the crap out of this book! And let’s be honest, I will be re-reading the #shirtlessEthan scene over and over again for a long time to come!

Holy crap!!!

This series, this book, this ending, these characters...I am honestly so full of happiness to have been on such an amazing ride.

Rachael’s writing with each book just got better and better. The way she found ways to keep shocking you with twists and turns was truly incredible and inspires me as a writer.

I have fallen so in love with each of these characters and am so sad to close the book for the last time. I really would like to see them in another novel (hint hint).

I felt this book wrapped everything up nicely at the end leaving you sighing with pleasure and pain as the final sentence is read.

Thank you Rachael for this incredible adventure, I cannot wait for your next one xo

Wonderfully fast paced and engaging, Shield made an excellent conclusion to this trilogy. I was happily surprised by the amazing mental health representation, and I strongly connected with the claustrophobia scenes. Highly recommend!

I've never been so emo about finishing a book. Absolutely loved these books and the way they're written! I see there's some other short story spin offs so I'm definitely adding those to my to-read folder :)

I received a copy of Shield from Walker Books Australia in exchange for an honest review. This is the last book in the Spark trilogy. If you want to read my reviews of the first two books, Spark and Stray, click the links.

I have loved both Spark and Stray so I was expecting to feel the same about this. I don’t usually go into books expecting to love them, even if they are part of a series, because there is a chance that I’ll be disappointed but there’s just something about these books that always draws me in and I can’t put them down. Shield was the same as the first two in that way but I wanted to make it last because I knew this was the last one.

I really couldn’t stand the rules in the Affinity Project and the way they could own Evie and her right to have or not have children. It’s just so creepy and wrong. Like Evie would be some kind of baby factory so the Affinity Project could have more power or whatever. And I’m not even going to get started on how much I hated Knox or I’d be here all day.

I can’t say anything bad about Shield. Was it everything I was expecting? No. Was it better? Yes! I was expecting to destroy the Affinity Project but I’m not sure that’s even possible because there would still be people out in the world with altered DNA. It was obvious that their way of thinking needed to be changed and the members (is that what they’re called?) be given free will to choose who they want to be with and if they want to have kids. Or if they want to be involved in the Project at all.

I wish Kitty was in the book more but I do understand why she wasn’t. I think one of my favourite things about this trilogy is her friendship with Evie, they are definitely friendship goals. I’m just glad there was a lot of Evie and Jamie time for my shipper heart!

Okay, so I might have lied a little. I did have just the one problem with Shied. Knowing that this is the last book in the trilogy the ending was a little too open for me. And by open I mean there was something left up in the air… But I’m not going to say what. I did get some of the things I was hoping for when I went into Shield so the ending wasn’t that big of a deal for me but it did leave me a little frustrated. I don’t normally like when endings are left up in the air but this was just one thing so I think I can live with it.

If you haven’t read Spark I highly recommend it. This is one of my favourite trilogies and I can’t wait to see what Rachael comes up with next!
