Beth's Story: Accepting Love
Beth's Story
After years of living with Paul’s cruelty, Beth can take no more. With her family’s help, she escapes, leaving the police a letter explaining her sudden disappearance.
Overwhelmed with guilt, broken, and terrified she will do something wrong, Beth starts her new life in Aalborg, Denmark. Every decision and social encounter is a fraught internal battle, with sometimes hilarious consequences. She wrestles with feelings of unworthiness, but as time passes, glimpses of her old self break through. She makes new friends and meets a kind, patient man. Accepting moments of genuine happiness, she allows herself to hope she can be whole again.
When the past comes knocking, Beth is sent spiralling into despair. Can she survive and embrace the new future stretching before her? Is she capable of accepting love?
An Aalborg Love Story
This book is the third in a series of stand-alone stories, predominantly set in the town of Aalborg in northern Denmark. Old friends from other stories in the series crop up, giving it a cohesive feel. Aalborg itself shines as a backdrop, sharing its history, culture and not least the fjord on which it sits.

This is the third book in The Aalborg Love Stories, and I honestly think Beth’s story might have just become my favourite of the series. 🥹
Beth is 40 years old and has spent the last seven years trapped in a physically and mentally abusive relationship. With the help of her family, she finally manages to escape and starts a new life with her grandparents in Denmark.
I’m not going to lie, the first few chapters were really difficult to read. Beth’s experiences and the way her escape unfolded genuinely brought me to tears. This is a really heavy and difficult subject, but I think Janice Greve handled it incredibly well.
What I particularly appreciated was that the story doesn’t just focus on the abuse itself or Beth escaping from it. It also explores what happens afterwards — the trauma, the fear, the emotional scars and the fact that escaping an abusive relationship doesn’t mean you suddenly stop being affected by what happened to you. It’s something you have to learn to live with, and Beth’s journey really showed that.
And it also highlighted just how important a strong support system can be. Watching Beth slowly begin to trust people again and realise that she has people around her who genuinely care about her was one of my favourite parts of the book. ❤️
I also absolutely loved how the characters from the previous books were brought into Beth’s story. Beth’s brother works as a policeman with Ava’s brother, Bryn, which is how Ava becomes involved and helps Beth when she first arrives in Denmark. Through Ava, we also get Luna and Adam, who become part of Beth’s support system too.
And Luna giving Beth a job? 🥹 I LOVED that.
I think it’s so lovely seeing all these characters become connected and, in a way, create this little family through everything they’ve experienced together. It makes the series feel so much more connected than just three separate love stories.
Before reading this, Ava’s story was definitely my favourite. I absolutely loved Luna and her story too, but Ava’s still had those little things that put it ahead for me.
But now?
Beth’s story has gone straight to the top. ❤️
I think this one affected me differently. I felt so deeply for Beth and found myself empathising with her throughout the entire story. Her journey was painful, emotional and at times incredibly difficult to read, but it was also about finding safety, learning to trust again and finally allowing herself to accept the love and support she deserved.
5⭐️ from me!
And I genuinely cannot wait to see where the rest of this series takes us. 🥹❤️
