A Better Man is the first book in Candis Terry’s new Sunshine Creek Vineyard series. It touched me on many levels, but most deeply in regards to Nicole, Jordan’s 17 year old sister who, like many teens her age, has an attitude problem which seems to be going from bad to worse. Jordan is taking the brunt of her wrath and as he takes a closer look at his role in her life – or non-role, in this case – he can’t help but want to do whatever he can to help her work her way through the tragic loss of their parents. Everyone assumes it’s that loss that has Nicole turned inside out, but it turns out to be much more than that.

Lucy Diamond is a wonderful woman. She’s smart, compassionate, attractive…but trust doesn’t come easy to her, and this is another aspect to the story that touched me. Her past hasn’t defined her, but it has made her very cautious. Too cautious, even to the point of not living her life to its fullest. Part of that has to do with Jordan, but mostly it’s due to an awful marriage to a man she met in college, but barely knew. It’s years later now and she considers herself pretty solid, but with Jordan back in Sunshine Valley she finds herself emotionally thrown off kilter and has to decide if he – or any man – is worth risking her heart to.

Ms. Terry is easily one of the best contemporary romance authors out there. Her characters are relatable, their lives are believable and, without fail, the stories she gives us are funny, romantic, and poignant. She is, no doubt about it, a gifted writer, and I’m excited to spend more time with the Kincade brothers in Sunshine Valley.

An ARC was provided by Avon Books. In appreciation I’m giving them an honest review.

Summary
Welcome to Sunshine Creek Vineyard and the infamous Kincade brothers who will do anything to protect their own and their legacy. Jordan Kincade, is a hockey star, playing in the pros for fifteen years and is a star among his team and about to carry them to a big win for the team. But then Jordan gets a horrific call, where his parents have been killed in a crash while on vacation. Jordan returns home immediately, not having been home for a long time. His reunion with his family is bittersweet but the moment he comes home, he realizes what he has been missing, and that his family has always needed him; but especially now more than ever. His youngest sister, stares at him with anger and he doesn't understand why. But he is going to get to the bottom of it, which leads him to one of her teachers...Lucy Diamond. Lucy had a crush on Jordan for a long time. In high school she was stood up by Jordan and was hurt and still hasn't fully forgiven him for that. Now he is back in town asking for her help with his sister. As they start to work together, the chemistry between them builds, but can Lucy have the courage to stand by Jordan whether its in a small town or by his side in the city while he plays pro??
The Hero
Jordan Kincade, has always wanted to leave home ever since he was young. He dreamed about playing hockey and doing it pro and he is dang good at it. His family supported him, knowing it was his dream. But Jordan drifted away from those that loved him most because of his sport. Jordan is a bit clueless to certain matters, unless you give it to him straight. He has a thick head, and you need to really pound at that skull before he gets anything especially when it comes to important matters like family or love. Jordan knows that when he returns home, how things have changed and how much his family really needs him...and always has needed him. It takes a sister who is bitter against him for turn priorities around for him. Jordan was delicious though....he is a fighter. When he believes in something, nothing and no one can stand in his way. He is stubborn ,determined and quite passionate. We see his strong personality traits come through in the story brilliantly.
The Heroine
Lucy Diamond is shy and quiet. She loves the small town life, and has never wanted more than that. She is a teacher and loves helping her students bring out their creative methods in their development. Lucy has had a fascination with reading and the written word. But Lucy is very cautious especially around men. Her experiences with them have not been positive in any way. So she is very hesitent to even help Jordan out at times, because even though she feels for the teenage girl...he is the last man she wants to be around. But she gives in, and is slow to trust. Lucy is kind and compassionate. Being bold and daring is not easy for her, because she finds her ground with Jordan and she comes more into herself. We some growth in her confidence level as the story develops. I really liked Lucy so much, all around a good and gentle woman you want to be friends with.
Plot and Story Line
A Better Man is the first in the newest series from this author. Now first off I do want to say why have I  NOT read this author before now??!!! I was nervous, always am when trying out a new author. But really, I should trust this publishing company more, because rarely do they let me down in discovering new authors to enjoy. Candis Terry does such a admiring job in creating this small town culture and building the setting that you almost feel like its so real as you read. I do wish it was...I would move there. LOL

So the story sets off at the beginning, with an exciting scene of Jordan playing with his team mates. We feel the energy and action while playing a thrilling game and Jordan aids them in the win despite his nature of being in the penalty box ALOT. I found that amusing, because while he is talented, he has a hard time with self control...his temper can get out of wack while playing. (which quite frankly, is typical right?). Then he receives a call from his brother, and his carefree man changes instantly. He comes to terms with certain aspects of himself, and needs to change. He is wanting to make amends. Now this is where I truly fell in love with his character. Because he becomes very honest and wanting to change and be better. The family here are just awesome...man love these brothers. They are just wonderful. Each family member is a bit different, but I love the range of personalities. Should make future books interesting.

The actual romance between Jordan and Lucy is so heartwarming and I loved it. There were some moments I wasn't always able to connect with them, but for the most part its sweet, fun and charming. But I did feel a more curiousness about Jordan and his sister's relationship. Seeing how they would work things out and get to the bottom of some mysteries that crop up.
The Cover
What a perfect cover for spring....I love how sexy yet sweet it is. The backdrop is beautiful. I just want to step right into it.
Overall View
A Better Man is a truly engaging and fun romance. The tone of the story is sweet and lighthearted with a bit of mystery and self-growth thrown in the mix. Truly Charming!!

Another fantastic start to a new series by this author I am really liking. Our hero is a professional athlete who has it all, money, fame, women but when his parents suddenly die he realises in his pursuit of his dreams he lost his connection to his family somewhere along the way. He also sees how troubled his 17-year-old-sis, a sis he barely knows is. He vows to do much better, even if it means time away from his game and goes to the heroine to seek help. Our heroine is a teacher who truly cares, and knows the hero when she tutored him as a teen. Our heroine is really wary of men having fallen for the worst sort before and come out of a domestic violence filled marriage. I liked how the hero wooed her, and I liked the progression of their relationship.

Terrific story of family, love and second chances. Jordan left his home and family behind at the age of eighteen, when he was drafted to play professional hockey. This had been his dream for many years, and it took precedence in his life. Everything came crashing down when he got a call from his oldest brother, telling him that their parents had been killed in an accident while on vacation.

I ached for Jordan when he got home. Thanks to his concentration on his career, he had spent little time with his family over the last fifteen years. He realizes that he doesn't know them anymore, and they don't really know him. The shock of his parents' death brings home to him the importance of his family to his life, and he is determined to make amends. I loved seeing him make it clear to the family that he is "all in". He offers to take on the challenge of finding out what has turned their little sister, Nicole, into what he calls a "baby dragon". This brings him in contact with one of her teachers, Lucy Diamond.

Lucy is Nikki's creative writing teacher. She is sweet and caring, a little bit vulnerable, but with an inner strength she doesn't realize she has. Lucy also has a history with Jordan. Back when they were in high school, she tutored him for one of his classes. At the time, he was a typical teenage jock - cocky, selfish, and quite the heartbreaker. She had a crush on him, but was concentrating on her studies as a way to get away from her dysfunctional parents. She resisted Jordan's advances until she finally agreed to go to their graduation dance with him, only to have him stand her up. She has never forgotten or truly forgiven him for that. She came back to Sunshine after a disastrous marriage and having taken a hit to her trust of men and her own instincts. She wants to help Nikki, but not get mixed up with Jordan again.

I loved the progress of the relationships in the book, both between Jordan and Lucy, and between Jordan and his family, especially Nicole. From the start, Jordan knew that he had screwed up with Lucy back in high school. I loved the way he admitted it right up front and had the class to apologize even after all these years. Even better was the way he made amends for that. He went to a lot of effort and it was fun to see it all happen from start to finish. I liked how Jordan asked for her help with Nikki, and how their work together brought them closer in their relationship. It was fun to see the buildup of the heat between them, and awesome to see Jordan's patience and understanding as he learned about her marriage and its effect on her. I liked seeing him go from self-professed playboy to thinking about Lucy as a permanent part of his life. He was a little freaked out by his feelings at the beginning, but really came to embrace them. Lucy had a hard time believing that he was really interested in her. She spent some time thinking that it was just a fling between them, and even that was a surprise to her. She was puzzled at times about how she could be falling for a man who was so different from her. Her confidence took a hit at the game she went to and she had an encounter with one of the groupies. I loved seeing Jordan's reaction to her trying to pull away. There was also a great scene involving the local newspaper that showed Lucy's growing confidence in herself and how much she cares for Jordan. The ending was great, and I loved Jordan's big moment.

His relationships with his family were a bit complicated. Because he had been away for so long, with infrequent visits, he felt like he had lost his connection with them. I ached for him as he looked at them and realized what he had done by staying away. I loved that there didn't seem to be any real resentment from his brothers, all of them understood the importance of his career to him. That was especially obvious when each of them showed up to keep him company as he watched his team play on television. However, that acceptance didn't extend to his sister. Nikki's teenage attitude and anger, especially at him, confused the heck out of him. I loved the way it didn't stop him from trying. He was not going to give up, and with Lucy's help he started to get through to her. I really enjoyed his decision to take her along when he had to return to work. The scenes at the practice and the game were great. I also loved seeing his support of her when she finally told him what was bothering her. I loved seeing the effect it all had on Jordan and the way he viewed his future. He had some important decisions to make, and I loved watching him work it all out.

There were a couple of questions running through the book that didn't really get answered, so I expect they will also run through the other books in the series. One question was who was responsible for the money missing from the business? Aunt Pippy behaves oddly whenever the subject comes up, but does she know anything? When they discover who, the question becomes why? Another question comes from Nicole and explains some of her angst during the book. An argument with her father before he left on the vacation has her wondering if there's something no one has told her. Telling her brothers brings no resolution, just disbelief and more questions. Then there is the fact that the business is in trouble, and they are all needed to help turn it around. I liked the sharing of ideas and am looking forward to seeing how it goes.

I loved Candis Terry's Sweet, Texas series, so I immediately bought this one. I love to have new contemporary romance series to follow, you know?

The first chapter was rather sad -- when Jordan found out about his parents' death right after winning the game *sniff*. I couldn't imagine the turmoil that he experienced. But I loved what he did afterwards, that he decided to be with his family, to get to know his younger sister (whom he 'lovingly' called baby dragon *lol*) and to make things right.

I also love hero and heroine with history between them, so this one definitely fits the bill. I liked how Jordan approached that issue with Lucy. I mean, yeah, sure the explanation came years late but Jordan racked up THOUSANDS points in my eyes after he did the prom scene for Lucy. He surely raised the bar for his brothers *lol*.

Near the end, I said to myself "I'm proud of these two", because I did. I thought they showed character progress and there were one or two scenes that just put a huge smile to my face. Jordan for stepping up to the plate (wrong sport analogy, I know) and Lucy for leaving her abusive marriage and made it on her own. Heck, the way that she dealt with that newspaper made me want to fist-bump her or something.

Unfortunately, I couldn't rate it higher because there were also some questions that only given vague or no answer at all, and it dampen my satisfaction a little bit. Like why Jordan left the family? I mean, yes, I understand that he wants to be a hockey player, that it is his dreams. But since he has no family issues, and the siblings seem to be very close, I just don't get the reasons for him to stay away.

I also thought the part with felt like a vague problem suddenly added in the middle. But maybe it is going to be a kind of serialized arc for the whole series. We'll see...

Next book will be about Jordan's twin Declan, and his assistant. Ooooh, office romance? Bring it!

This as a lot of fun, but suffered somewhat for being the start of a new romance series. That meant it needed a lot of establishing for the family, the business, and some of the conflicts that they'll likely be facing in the coming novels. All the distraction was a shame because it left me feeling like Jordan got the short end of the stick (hah, hockey allusion!).

All that said, I do love me a second-chance love story and this is an excellent example of the trope. Jordan and Lucy had an almost-fling in High School, but Jordan left town on graduation night after standing her up for her first real date. Drama galore and lots of fun banter ensues when the meet back up. I really liked Jordan, though his playboy past never felt very real to me. Yeah, we hear a lot about it, from him, mostly, but he is obviously a caring man with his family, and he doesn't really hesitate in drawing Lucy into his orbit, either. I'm not complaining, mind, but it did go on about his big-bad past.

And I liked Lucy, of course. She's sweet and vulnerable and caring and yet, you can see the inner core of strength she's had to develop due to her past. I fell for her from the start and seeing her find the perfect guy for her was a lot of fun.

Anyway, this cruised on a steady 3.5 stars and I'm happy to round up. Some of that is hope for the series now that the family situation is established. I'm not a huge fan of the plot elements with the vineyard and the parents who sound like they kind of sucked more than we've been let know, yet. But I'm willing to give it a shot at not being as silly as it seems right now.

A note about Steamy: This was the upper part of my mid-steam tolerance. There were three very long explicit sex scenes. The first two were well integrated into the story and needed the length for the emotional content. The third was gratuitous and I ended up skimming it. I rarely do that, but it seemed largely a rehash and I already know the mechanics, thank-you-very-much.

Well that was a nice kick off to a series. Likeable characters, a gorgeous setting, turmoil and family coming together after a devastating loss, righting wrongs long past and finding a second chance at romance. There was a little of everything including a little mystery along the way.

The quick of it is that after their parents are killed Jordan and his siblings have all come home to get things in order and make decisions and be there for their younger sister who is going through something and struggling with school on top of everything else. Which brings Jordan face to face with his sisters teacher...a woman he has a bit of a past with. And things get even more interesting!

Like I said. This one was fun. It's an easy read and I enjoyed both Jordan and Lucy. Seeing them together and moving on from the past. Nice romance, a family that got my curiosity peeked and a little heat.

The interesting thing about this one was everyone I know online who has read it (in groups) loved it and was excited for more. In my real life book club, though, which is who I read this one with they really hated it. I think one other lady enjoyed it but for the most part they weren't fans. It was so odd to see that difference in groups of people who all love romance.

Me personally, I'm in. I want the next book and to see what will happen with this group of siblings. They've all got pretty interesting set ups/careers so should be interesting.

This is book 1 in a brand new series by Ms. Terry and I just fell in love with the plot and the Kincade brothers.

Jordan is a hockey star and things come easy to him. His team is on the way to the playoffs when he gets a call that his parents have passed away in a helicopter accident. He heads home to be with his siblings but when he gets there he realizes that he doesn't really know them anymore but he wants to. It's time for him to right his wrongs. It may take time but when he is done he will be a better man.

Lucy is a creative writing teacher. She realized that Nicole Kincade is dealing with the death of her parents but her grades started to suffer before that. She didn't expect Jordan to walk back into her life after 15 years but she definitely isn't going to be charmed by him again after what he did all those years ago except that he needs her help. The more time they spend together the more she opens up to a possibility that Jordan could be the one for her.

I really liked that this book was different then Terry's other work. I love that it takes place on vineyard. Jordan has 4 brothers and a little sister who is 17 .. Wow! All of them are so different but I love how they have this funny banter even though they all are going through a hard time.

Nicole is 17 and she has the teenage attitude to prove it but you can tell Jordan and his brothers care about her. I love how he calls her baby dragon it was cute and funny.

I really liked Jordan, at first I thought he would be a cocky nhl player but as his character went through the death of his parents you could actually see he is a good man and he wants to do the right thing. At times I felt bad for him that he cut himself off from his family but I loved how he just wanted it back.

Lucy took a little more time for me to like and understand. She didn't have the best childhood and marriage but sometimes I got annoyed that she couldn't see her worth. So she wasn't a super model or anything but she had Jordan's attention but she felt she didn't majority through the book. At the end I liked how much power she finally realized she had and she learned how to use it.

I really enjoyed this story. It was sweet, emotional and had a great plot that kept me interested. Of course it ends in a HEA but it also leaves open some mysteries for the next book. I don't want to give too much away but while they are getting to the bottom of Nicole's issues these brothers learn a few things that have been happening on the vineyard and secrets that are being held.

Overall I am really looking forward to reading more of this series and I can't wait to see what journey Terry will take the remaining siblings on just to uncover the truth.

This is the first book I've read by this author and it won't be the last. This story was just what I was in the mood for. I'd been thinking about a story where the shy girl in high school met the popular guy after college. This was that and more. I so enjoyed it.

Characters are really important to me in a book. If I don't like them, feel like they are real or relate to them in some way, then I usually don't enjoy the story. I felt the connection to these characters quickly. Lucy was the quiet girl in high school who tried to be as invisible as possible. Her life wasn't easy and she had to rely on her own smarts to get where she was going. She made mistakes along the way and was pretty private because of it. I liked her quiet strength. She was a closet writer and a teacher. She stood up for her students and tried to do what was best for those she cared about. I really liked her.

Jordan captured my heart quick and held it. He's a big hunky hockey player on a team that's headed for the playoffs. His mind is all hockey all day. But then tragedy strikes and he finds himself home and trying to figure out who he really is. As he faces the mistakes he's made, he owns his stuff. I respect him and care for him. I was cheering for him, for him and Lucy.

The story feels small town and builds the foundation for each brother to get their own book. The overarching story of the boys parents seems to carry through the books and I'm interested to learn more about the winery and how everything pans out. I want the stories that aren't listed yet. Book two is Dec's story and Parker gets book three. But I'm hoping for Ryan and Ethan's stories too! I'm invested in this family and will definitely read more!

This is the kind of contemporary romance that hauls you into it's pages and keeps you happily entertained until the end. Then you look around and are happy there are more brother's stories to come.

This is where I start my reread of this series, about the Kincade siblings, who are all male and adult, except for the only sister who's seventeen. And it all begins when they hear the tragic news that their parents died in a helicopter crash.

Jordan Kincade is a professional hockey player. Every since he's been drafted by the NHL, he hasn't been the most present in his family's lives. But when one of his brother calls to tell him the devastating news, Jordan doesn't hesitate to left during the playoffs to help his siblings with their parents vineyard and deal with their little sister's anger. He's in over his head with Nicole but lucky enough he can count on one of her teacher to help. But wait a minute. The teacher... he knows her. She's the one he was supposed to go to the prom with. Maybe making amend with Nicole is not the only one he'll have to do.

I'm keeping my inital rating of 4 stars because I still found this story touching and sweet.

3.5 stars

I had read and enjoyed some of Candis's other books, so I was eager to see how a new series went.

I really liked Lucy and Jordan. Their past relationship made for an easy way for them to fall back into friendliness and the banter and flirting wasn't too far behind. I liked the big family and all of the brothers were fun. Some of the best scenes were between Jordan and his little sister.

There was a bit of conflict with the family business and even though we got a bit of an answer, it wasn't everything and that drives me crazy. The ending was sweet, but I would have loved an epilogue with a bit of the future in it.

Overall, it was a quick and enjoyable read. I'll definitely be reading more in the series.

**Huge thanks to Avon Books and Edelweiss for providing the arc in exchange for an honest review**

Small town romances are some of my favorites and the fact that this is set at a family Winery is all the more reason I wanted to read it. This is the first book in a new series about family, wine and romance.

The Kincade family runs a winery in Washington State. The large family is close but various businesses and jobs take them away from the area, but when tragedy strikes they reunite to face the pain. The five brothers and one younger sister are grief stricken as they bury their parents and decide on the future of their family and the business.

Jordan is a famous Hockey player helping his teams try to make the season playoffs when he hears the news. He immediately goes home and feels the guilt of being away from the family for so many years and makes a commitment to the family that he is all in and will deal with his job later. His brother Ryan who is running the winery gives him the task of finding out what is wrong with his younger sister, Nicole, something more than just their parents death has bothered her for several months, now is the time to become someone he has never been before, a big brother.

Lucy Diamond is one of Nicole’s teachers and sent home a note of concern. She grew up in this town but was the quiet one in school and although many do not remember her, she remembers Jordan. After school she went away and entered into a disastrous marriage only to return home with a new name and a new view of the world. She knows the minute Jordan is back to town and with his sister in danger of not graduating it is only a matter of time before they run into each other, so she prepares her heart.

A great start to a new series featuring many of my favorite things. I love the family dynamics of these close knit siblings and even though they are far away from each other for many years, I enjoyed the camaraderie they all feel.

Jordan is feeling some deep guilt, he left home at an early age when he was drafted into hockey and other than coming home for celebrations he has been away. When he finds out that Lucy is Nicole’s teacher he realizes he also needs to make amends to her for standing her up in high school. Whew, he has a lot to do at home, and this does not include what he needs to do about his team and contract. I love how he wants to make himself a better man and deal with what he has left behind, and the way he treats Lucy is so sweet, making her feel things she has never felt before.

Lucy is delightful, she is dealing with the aftermath of a horrible marriage but she loves the town and the kids she teaches. She is very invested in Nicole and you can tell in everything she does that she wants her to succeed. When she sees Jordan for the first time in years, she is flustered and tries to not show much but he knows how he treated her and apologies almost immediately and from that moment on he seems to focus on her, I love their chemistry.

The pace works well, slow and steady with a bit of drama and a mystery that does not end with this story. I love the Kincade family, each with their own personality and backgrounds; I see the potential for many stories which I am looking forward to reading. I like the fact that there is a side story, as Nicole’s problem is very important to the overall story arc, no one knew why Nicole was angry, it started before the parents died and she refused to talk about it, but when Nicole finally confides to others her fears she realizes her family has her back. And this opens up many questions and a mystery that will blend into the next book or two. I like that things are not always tied up in a neat bow at the end and will be waiting to read more in upcoming books. I did miss that the winery was not as featured as I would have hoped, but I know with the secrets and lies that were unveiled the winery setting will definitely be front and center soon.

Are you in the mood for a sweet romance, one that you don't have to think much about ? The type of book where you can just curl up and relax too and once you have finished it , you can exhale an audible sigh as you are wrapped up in the world of a sweet romance love story ? If so, then Candis Terry's new series Sunshine Creek Vineyard - A Better Man is the book for you. In this series, we focus on the Kincaid family and Book #1 stars Jordan Kincaid - a famous NHL Hockey player who is gracing the courts as a big shot. That is until he recieves news that his parents have passed away in an accident and now all the family are back at the Vineyard which is older brother has been handling. When Jordan arrives home though, things are a bit on edge especially since he has been away from the family for a while and his little sister Nicole is now 17 and has that teenage attitude to boot. She has been failing her classes especially Creative Writing and Jordan has agreed to meet the teacher. Turns out that the teacher Lucy and Jordan go way back to high school and on the night of their high school prom Jordan actually stood Lucy up. Their first few meetings are met with resistance as he has already broken her heart once again and all Lucy can see is the cocky sports player. As the novel goes along though, we read as the pair may discover that they have found each other's true loves ? The other thing that I liked about this book was watching the relationships between Jordan and his family grow stronger.

Too many plot holes.
All the brothers are absent but Nicole is only mad at one of them.

The brothers barely talk. And if all are responsible for Nicole why is it that Jordan is the only one that suddenly feels responsible? And if ryan is already taking care of his daughter, adding a 17 yo, wouldnt change his routine too much. Especially considering he is supposed to be the closest to her. He was always around as he worked with their dad.

It doesnt make any sense the way they deal with the fallout.
No ones is properly grieving.

Candis Terry scores big in her new Sunshine Creek Vineyard series. We meet the Kincades, who are devastated by the news that their parents - the steady rocks of their family - have died in a tragic accident.

Jordan Kincade is at the height of his career as an NHL player. He has a major contract, lots of women, and more money than he knows what to do with...but he realizes none of it means anything, as he can't help his little sister, 17-yr-old Nicole, grieve...or shake her teenage attitude. He's determined to change his life, putting his family first, and Terry brought us along for the ride as he dealt with both his personal and professional responsibilities. While he seems selfish in his daily life, we're given glimpses into his drive to succeed, making him much more relatable than "just another sports hero." Every time he talks with his sister, the befuddlement at her responses made me both want to laugh and cry. Teenagers are tough to deal with on a regular day, but throw in an unexpected parental death and Jordan's being absent most of her life...well, Terry didn't make it easy on Jordan.

Lucy Diamond is Nicole's teacher, and she knows something else is going on with Nicole. She wants to help the troubled teen, as Lucy knows what Nicole's potential is...but she doesn't count on Nicole's older brother coming back to town. Lucy was in love with Jordan when they were in high school, but an unforgivable high school act (high school dance! Terry definitely has the teen angst aspect down). Now that they're working together to help Nicole through her grief and whatever else is troubling her, Lucy can't help but feel drawn to Jordan again, especially as she sees how hard he's trying to change his life to put everyone else first.

These characters are so laugh-out-loud funny in their interactions - the scene where Jordan calls Lucy out on pretending to not remember her was brilliant! - but they're also very real, and when Lucy cried, I also wanted to cry. In true Terry fashion, these characters are ones you'll wish were real - but you'll have to settle for the next best thing of reading the book over and over. Highly recommended.

The thing I most love about Candis Terry's books are her characters. They have such depth to them. You can never take them at face value. A Better Man is the first in a new series and she starts that series out with a bang!

I loved the characters!

You only get the bare minimum about the brothers but that's okay, you know their stories are come! You get a little bit more about the sister, that's because her story works into Jordan's.

I really liked Jordan. It's not easy when you wake up and realized you've missed so much in your life, that your not really part of those that you hold the closest. But he handled it well. He grew a pair and did what was right for him and his family. I have to give it to him. He could have done the easy thing and gone on with his life and leave the family mess to other, but he didn't!

Now Lucy was a different kettle of fish for me. I didn't warm up to her right away. Not sure why? There is really nothing wrong with her. I sort of know what it is...Jordan, she wasn't very nice to him at first! What can I say, I'm shallow. Ha!

It didn't take long for me to warm up to Lucy. She showed me that she has a huge heart that she really can't wait to fill!

This is a story or growth and second chances. I really loved it! Sunshine Creek Vineyard series is starting off with a bang and I can't wait to see what's coming next!

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

At first I thought this was going to be just another hockey player story, but was I wrong. The depth of character that Jordan demonstrates throughout the book is refreshing. As the book progresses you see how the deaths of Jordan's parents affect him and who he strived to be for so long. Coming home is not all its cracked up to be, especially in light of all that's happened, and he can't help but feel on the outside looking in.

When Jordan meets with Lucy Diamond, one of his sister's teachers, he sees something in her eyes that takes him down memory lane and to the one person in high school that he had regrets about: Lucinda Nutter. Not knowing her story, but wanting to get to know the woman she is today, he sets out both help his sister and learn more about Lucy.

The story takes a few twists and turns and set up the story nicely for the next book(s) in the series.

A Better Man is the start of the Sunshine Creek Vineyard series which focuses on the Kincade siblings whose lives are thrown for a loop when their parents are killed in an accident and they must come together to save the family business. I thought both Jordan and Lucy were really well-written. They were relatable and I wanted them to be happy. They each had their own issues to deal with (Jordan developing a new role within his family and Lucy trusting someone with her personal feelings) and I thought those were handled well within the overall storyline. I thought the romance was very sweet and I could tell how much they suited one another. I also really liked the secondary plot involving Jordan's family and their reactions to their parents' deaths. The lone girl, Nicole, is especially intriguing to me and readers get to see her a lot in this book since she is the catalyst for Jordan and Lucy's reunion. I am definitely looking forward to more stories about the Kincade clan. This was my first experience with Candis Terry's writing and I can definitely tell why her contemporaries are so beloved.

I received a copy of this book from Avon via the Avon Addicts Program in exchange for an honest review.

Kurzbeschreibung

>>>>> My Synopsis (Review Follows) <<<<<
Jordan Kincade has just taken a break from his hockey career to bury his mother and father. They died suddenly and tragically in Hawaii when the helicopter they were touring with went down. The family is devastated and he and his brothers are trying to pick up the pieces and take over the family winery and the care of their younger sister, After reuniting with his family, Jordan is struck by how much he's missed because of his chosen career which involves a lot of traveling. Realizing life is short, he starts wondering if maybe it's time to hang up his skates and move back home.

Lucy Diamond knows all about Jordan Kincade. She tutored him in high school, and he was supposed to take her out on a date graduation night. He'd never shown up, and she's never really forgiven him. Now he's back and the sparks that once seemed to fly between them are beginning to ignite once again. Can she trust her heart to such a man? Dare she?

>>>>> My Review <<<<<
This is the first book of the Sunshine Creek Vineyard series and it I absolutely loved it. The push and pull magnetism between these to was fun to watch. Jordan is an undeniable ladies man who has finally decided he wants something more and finds Lucy just as delectable as he did when they were kids. While most would say she isn't his type, there is just something about the pretty, smart, young woman that has always attracted him to her. The problem is she wants absolutely nothing to do with him. He'll have to prove to her she's not just the latest flavor of the month and show her he's changed.

Lucy still remembers the night Jordan stood her up like it was yesterday. She'd gone against her better judgement and taken a chance when she agreed to the date only to be humiliated when he didn't show. She's vowed to herself to make smarter decisions and never fall for someone like Jordan again. I so enjoyed watching Jordan break down Lucy's walls and not all of them were tied to what Jordan did. She's got baggage and it's not of the good variety.

Jordan kind of grew on me. He's the type of guy who has a good heart and doesn't give up easily when he sets his sights on something or someone. Lucy just got in his line of view and she will have a hard time resisting him when he turns on the charm.

I couldn't help but give this one 5 out of 5 roses. It was charming, fun, and sexy with a touch of mystery added in for good measure--the brothers find that someone has been stealing a good deal of money from the winery and are determined to follow the money trail. Additionally, there is some added depth because Jordan's sister, Nicole, is taking the loss of her parents hard, and is targeting digs at Jordan whom she claims to be little more than a "stranger" to her. While not altogether untrue, she seems to be aiming the brunt of her grief anger at him. He's determined to get to the bottom of what is going on and help her through this difficult time and that's how he won me and Lucy over. On the Lisarenee Romance scale, this one scored a FAN rating--the temperature in the room seems to have suddenly gone up a couple of degrees and a fan would be nice.

3.5 bumped to 4 Ziggy Stars! I mean, really? This dog stole the show. Well, OK, not entirely, but he is pretty awesome. So, this is the first in the Sunshine Creek Vineyard series about the Kincade family. It's a stand-alone, but there is a mystery that isn't solved which I'm guessing will spill over into the next books in the series. It involves family secrets...

Jordan Kincade left the family when he was eighteen to begin a professional hockey career. Fifteen years later, he's realizing just how much he, and his family, gave up for that to happen. Hockey has always been his life, all-consuming, all-encompassing. He's never had time for anyone or anything else, never needed it, never wanted it. Now it's too late. There's time he'll never get back. Now he's come face-to-face with the realization of how alone he's been.

It took a long time, but Lucy has finally built a new life and identity for herself. She's left her past behind and she's only looking forward. Then Jordan Kincade walks back into her life and all bets are suddenly not so certain anymore. He's taken over concerns about his little sister, Nicole. Nicole is in danger of failing her senior classes and not graduating high school. As Nicole's teacher, Lucy has called a conference with Nicole's guardian. She thought it'd be Ryan, the oldest Kincade brother, who would show up. No such luck...she's going to have to face Jordan and the past.

This book has things happening on several levels. You've got a past abusive situation, a "coming to terms" with reality and things that are important situation, and one very angry teen, aka the baby dragon. Most of the issues are resolved without a huge amount of drama, which I think is pretty normal in a healthy person. The comradery between the Kincade brothers is heart-warming. This looks to be a fun and entertaining series.
