第四册从肯尼迪从政、遇刺,约翰逊继任,再到尼克松上台,至水门事件辞职。正好是被越南战争、反战主义和种族主义困扰的时期,可以看到这几任总统的政策、主张的差异,年轻派和保守派的隔阂,以及混乱渐渐走向平稳的过渡。最先从林达的书上看到水门事件时,真是很诧异。诧异有二,一是美国政府竟然可以如此轻易而大胆地窃听,二是法制的流程真的可以执行弹劾总统。

“我们总是失败,所做的一切只是为了降低失败的程度。”整本书里,拉尔夫·纳德的此语最得我心。同样,当我们在追逐一个理想中的国度时,这或许也是唯一可能的姿态与觉悟了吧。
