Dangling

Dangling by Maura Yzmore is a collection of dark short fiction, featuring twenty-eight stories about people on the precipice. The collection straddles absurdism, literary realism, and horror, with a dash of the speculative.

Content warning: Characters in Dangling deal with difficult themes, including addiction, infidelity, suicide, sexual assault, murder, cannibalism, and animal cruelty.

From Anxiety Press:

“Yzmore's Dangling is a visceral collection of stories told so uniquely and so powerfully it will be a long time before we see a debut voice with more promise."

— Sheldon Lee Compton, author of Oblivion Angels

“Dangling dwells in the liminal space between the sacred and the profane, that uncanny threshold between craving and transcendence. Yzmore deftly captures pivotal moments of transgression, by turns quiet and frenzied, through lived-in characters who are primal, flawed, and profoundly human.”

— Josh Goller, editor of The Molotov Cocktail

“Dangling from Maura Yzmore is occasionally shocking, utterly compelling, but above all, it showcases her absolute mastery of flash fiction. She wields stories under a thousand words with scalpel-like precision, and each tale of the surreal, the strange, and the speculative cuts clean to the bone.”

— Aeryn Rudel, author of Effectively Wild and Night Walk and Other Dark Paths

“In these razor-edge tales of strange hunger, characters chase what they crave most—only to find it’s never quite what they imagined. These bite-size stories pull readers into moments of unsettling clarity—when desire meets its object and everything shifts. Dangling explores the inner demons and angels that drive us, the things we’re willing to become, and the precise instant when we understand what we’ve really been searching for all along. Tight, immersive, and gloriously weird—flash fiction that burrows under your skin and stays there.”

— Myna Chang, author of The Potential of Radio and Rain

“Every story in Dangling hits you like a magic trick and like a magic trick leaves you with your mouth open. There’s gritty realism here, there’s magical realism here and there’s Yzmore’s razor-sharp dissection of humanity in every punch line—even when that punchline hits too close to home to laugh."

— Benjamin Drevlow, editor-in-chief of BULL

“At turns raunchy, comic, surreal, romantic, and horrific, the brief tales in Dangling depict lives struggling for connection in a world full of hostile surprises. A box of addictive and demented literary bon-bons.”

— Graham Robert Scott, author of “Missile Command” and “Amundsen Sea”

Dangling is a collection of very short stories centered on human connection, obsession and emotional truths.
Some stories are bizarre, some shocking, some are outright surreal, some atrociously obnoxious, some are awkward and some witty.
But one thing is for sure, they are not for the squeamish.
My favorites are ‘Pancakes’ and ‘Clusterfuck’.

Dangling was such a standout for me. I go into short story collections expecting there to be a few stories I love, a few that are fine, and at least one where I'm sitting there wondering why it made the cut. That did not happen here. I genuinely enjoyed every single story.

The biggest thing that impressed me was how different the stories were from each other. You've got horror, weird fiction, dark humor, surreal moments, and stories that are much more grounded, but somehow the whole collection still feels cohesive. Just when I thought I knew what kind of story I was getting, Maura would switch it up again.

And because these are so short, there isn't really anywhere for a story to hide. Every one has to do something with the space it's given, and I thought Yzmore was really good at getting to the point without making the stories feel underdeveloped.

There were so many moments where I finished a story and immediately thought, okay, THAT one was good. Then I'd start the next one and do it all over again.

Honestly, I can't remember the last short story collection where I didn't have at least one miss. Dangling somehow managed it. Every story was a banger, and that's enough for me to give this one five stars.

If you like:
✔️ Bite sized horror
✔️ Weird and surreal tales
✔️ Dark desire themes
✔️ Magical realism
✔️ Transgressive fiction
✔️ Short shocks

A great collection of short stories by Maura Yzmore, ranging from absurdist horror to genuinely bone-chilling tales of terror. Sharper than knives, with some endings that hit you like a hammer. A number of later stories are tales of crumbling relationships and personal drama, but they don't clash with the more speculative works in the beginning. Recommended if you like short bite-sized stories from a great writer of the form.

If you’re looking for a book that makes you pause, stare into the middle distance, and wonder “what the hell did I just read?” Dangling might be for you.

Maura Yzmore gives us a collection of short stories that are wildly different from one another, but they all share one important quality: they are deeply, unapologetically disturbing. This is the ultimate weird-girl horror collection: strange, visceral, uncomfortable, and occasionally downright grotesque.

Some of these stories are genuinely difficult to read. There’s graphic violence, gore, body horror, and some extremely unsettling imagery that will absolutely not be for everyone. Yzmore isn't interested in making these stories comfortable or particularly easy to digest, and I appreciated how unpredictable the collection felt. You never quite know where the next story is going to take you.

What I enjoyed most was the variety. Because these are short stories, each one gets to have its own identity and brand of weirdness. Some landed harder for me than others, but even when a particular story didn't completely work, I was still curious to see what kind of nightmare Yzmore was going to throw at me next.

If you enjoy authors like Eric LaRocca, Chandler Morrison, or Judith Sonnet, especially their more extreme and transgressive work, I think Dangling is worth putting on your radar.

This is not a cozy collection of spooky little stories. It's bloody, bizarre, graphic, and at times genuinely upsetting. Definitely check your content warnings before picking this one up.

But if your idea of a good horror read is “make me uncomfortable, disgust me a little, and then make me think about it afterward” welcome to Dangling.

Sometimes I go NetGalley "shopping," and find some real winners - Dangling is one of those times. I had no idea what to expect from this collection outside of the synopsis, but what a treat this experience was.

This collection of 28 bite-size stories ranges in topic from lost love, impactful meetings, unusual occurrences, evolution or devolution of relationships, and so much more. What ties all these stories together was how normal or routine the plot was until one thing sent it into the weird or supernatural or uncanny. And while almost all of the stories are a few pages or less, they all pack a punch that will stick with you to some degree. Dangling is a great title for this collection - because while, yes, there is a story called "Dangling," I think the word itself makes sense in the context of what each of these stories does: characters are left suspended in bad situations or hanging on for dear life; some of the stories end in a way that leave us dangling, wanting to know more.

This is the part where I list my favorite stories, but I really liked them all, which is rare for me. The ones I "rated" 10/10, however, were:
"The Voids Underneath": a man's wife seems to be changing, and a coyote keeps showing up in the yard
"The Girl in Jake's Red Hoodie": a hilarious take on "Little Red Riding Hood"
"Until They Are Both Empty": on her wedding day, a woman has some alone time with an old friend
"Clusterf*ck": a couple is having a nice dinner, but the guy keeps paying attention to his work
"Or Forever Hold Your Peace": the bride and groom might not be perfect for each other after all

To be clear, I rated all the stories high. Each one was so unique - while still being grounded in something I can either relate to or understand. I am preordering a physical copy of this one because I know I'll come back to it again and again.

Dangling is such an extraordinary debut — it’s easy to see why people are already calling Maura Yzmore one of the most exciting new voices around.

This collection sits right on that fascinating, uneasy line between what feels holy and what feels raw, between longing and something bigger than ourselves. Yzmore writes those quiet or explosive turning points in people’s lives so beautifully, filling every story with characters that feel messy, fierce, and completely, unmistakably human.

She’s a total master of flash fiction too. Every piece is under a thousand words, sharp and precise as a scalpel — each strange, surreal or speculative tale cuts straight to what matters most. These little stories pull you in fast, holding those sharp, clear moments when you finally get what you’ve really been chasing all along.

They’re about hunger of all kinds, the things we want most and how rarely they turn out how we expect — our inner battles, the sides of ourselves we’re scared to face, and that exact second everything shifts. Sometimes shocking, always gripping, and wonderfully odd in the best way, these are stories that really get under your skin and stick with you long after you finish.

Thank you NetGalley for the e-ARC.
These were really good and a great break to read short stories between longer novels. I love the mixture of surreal stories, horror, and those more grounded in the Real about crumbling relationships. They all seemed to fit together and felt to me as if they could all be happening in the same universe. My favorites were “dangling,” “she giggled, slippery in my arms,” and “as green slime on Nickelodeon’s kids choice awards drenches her completely, a rising popstar considers her life choices.”

This collection turned out to be an incredibly diverse mixed bag that spans sci-fi, slice-of-life domestic vignettes, quiet magical realism, and dark psychological horror. It definitely comes with a fair share of content warnings and trigger warnings, as some pieces dive headfirst into heavy, uncomfortable themes.

To be completely honest, I was not a fan of the first third of the book. It felt oversaturated with body horror, shock-value twists, and grotesque elements that didn't always land for me. However, once the collection moved past that initial phase, it found its stride. The stories rooted in subtle magical realism and nuanced, observant domestic drama were the absolute highlights for me (Through Thin Air, Until They Are Both Empty, Pancakes, and Clusterfuck were standouts). They carried far more emotional weight, wit, and psychological depth than the pieces that just aimed to provoke.

My biggest critique lies in the pacing and arrangement of the stories. I would have rearranged the table of contents to interweave the genres more fluidly. Grouping several stories with sudden "shock-for-the-sake-of-shock" endings back-to-back created narrative fatigue early on. A more balanced mix between the uncanny, the speculative, and the grounded slice-of-life pieces would have made the collection feel much more cohesive and impactful as a whole.

Overall, a solid and multifaceted read with some genuine gems. Worth picking up for readers who appreciate dark, genre-bending short fiction.

This brief collection of short stories by Maura Yzmore was overall a 3.75 stars rounded up.

I struggle to rate collections such as this one because I invariably end by giving it the average rating between all the stories which is admittedly what I’ve done this time.

However, what I think sets this collection apart from others is the way in which the quality of the prose, the punchiness of the twists and the depth of the characters progress nicely from the first story to the last.

I think I would’ve dnf’d it had I not convinced myself to read past the first 3 or 4.

It was a pleasant experience to find more and more reasons to be hooked as I read along. Especially after roughly the 30% mark.

By the time I got to the last story I was already feeling a longing for the characters which I honestly don’t expect for this type of publishing.

I would recommend it to all the fans of Eric LaRocca who need a break from him without necessarily going too far…. Does that make sense?

Looking forward to reading more from this author.

I absolutely love short story fiction and when I saw 'Dangling' appear on NetGalley, I was immediately intrigued.

'Dangling' is a collection of short stories by Maura Yzmore and to start off this review I will say that I did find some of these stories utterly absorbing! I love surrealist and absurdist fiction and I really got that vibe with a few of the stories in this collection. I feel this is where it absolutely thrives the most and Yzmore's writing style really flourishes when she's writing something quite dark and horrific! (That's a good thing in this situation!)

Where I feel the collection is let down is there are a few stories that I felt didn't really add much to it. I would've loved to have that same horrific, surreal vibes throughout but I felt some stories cut away from that atmosphere I was absorbed.

Overall I really liked this collection! It was a fun read and I think Yzmore's ability to write terrifying and absurd stories is something that horror readers will appreciate and enjoy!

Thank you once again to NetGalley and Victory Editing for providing me with this copy of 'Dangling' in exchange for an honest review!

Thank you to NetGalley, Maura Yzmore, and Anxiety Press for the Advanced Reader Copy of Dangling.

I am rating this book 5 stars. Short stories are not usually my favorite, but I chose to request this book to give it a chance. I was intrigued by the cover and blurb. Twenty-eight stories and it’s under 200 pages!

This book blew me away! I honestly expected to only like the first two and maybe dislike the rest of the stories. That’s how it usually goes when I read a short story novel. No, I was wrong. Each story was fascinating. They are all very different from each other. We’ve got dark humor, magical realism, insane “what the hell” moments. The stories are short, maybe the shortest was like one page. Still, REALLY good stories.

I’ll be thinking about this book for a while. The author’s writing style is fast-paced & well-written, it gets right to the point. After reading one story, I’m telling myself “okay, I really liked that one” and kept doing that after every single one.

All in all, this is a great book to read in one sitting. If you enjoy a short, fast-paced, horror novel, you should definitely give this one a try. If you are anything like me, where I usually don’t like short story novels, give this one a chance.

All opinions are my own and not influenced.

Dangling by Maura Yzmore completely upends the traditional short-story experience, where you usually go in expecting a mixed bag and end up wading through filler.

Instead, every single entry in this collection hits the mark, offering a cohesive yet wildly versatile journey through horror, weird fiction, dark humor, and surrealism.

Because the format is brief, every narrative has to pack an immediate punch, and Yzmore excels at economic, focused storytelling that wastes no time while never feeling rushed or underdeveloped.

The collection serves as the ultimate weird-girl horror experience: visceral, grotesque, and unapologetically disturbing.

Featuring heavy body horror, graphic violence, and deeply unsettling imagery, it is certainly not for sensitive readers or the faint of heart.

However, for those who appreciate unpredictable, boundary-pushing fiction, Yzmore delivers a delightfully macabre and imaginative atmosphere.

You simply never know what kind of nightmare she is going to serve up next, keeping the momentum entirely magnetic from start to finish.

While individual pieces naturally resonated with varying degrees of intensity, even the stories that didn't entirely click left a lingering impression and kept curiosity high for the next turn.

Highlights like "Pancakes" and the title story anchor the book, helping me tear through the entire collection in just two sittings.

Wry, unpredictable, and brilliantly executed, Dangling is an essential read for anyone looking for short fiction that will make you pause, stare into the middle distance, and wonder what you just read.

I knew going into Dangling that it would be dark, with some graphic horror and a healthy dose of absurdity. I genuinely did not know what I was in for.

This content wasn't quite for me, but I was absolutely entertained by it, and it got me talking in a way few books do. Think extremely short stories built from all the intrusive thoughts you'd never say out loud, and even that doesn't scratch the surface of what's waiting on these pages.

I say that with so much love for the author and her work. I found it hilarious how bold, in-your-face, and shocking her stories were, and I love that she wasn't afraid to just say the things, no matter how out of this world they got.

More than once I finished a story thinking, what on earth did I just read? Then I'd run to share it with my husband, who would look up at me with the same shocked face. It made for a very interesting evening of reading, talking, laughing, gasping, cringing, and turning pages together.

Not something I would normally reach for, but extremely entertaining and an experience I won't forget.

As someone that reads and writes flash fiction, I find there is a dearth of anthologies and collections in the form – most of the time one needs to seek out literary magazines to reliably find well-crafted flash fiction (shout out to Flash Fiction Online, Flash Point SF et al).

So it's refreshing to see this collection entirely dedicated to (very) short stories. And Maura knows what she's doing, at this length every word counts. We get a range of genres and topics, though they generally lean darker, and the occasional light-hearted/humorous story acts as a pallet cleanser. Many readers will find this to be a strength, though I did find myself wishing there was a bit more thematic focus. Still, I recommend this readily to fans of flash fiction

Stand out stories for me:
- Underfoot
- The Voids Underneath
- Pancakes
- The Girl in Jake's Red Sweater
- Chuck E

A short story collection is best savored, not devoured, yet as I read Maura Yzmore's Dangling, I had to resist the urge to gorge myself. The collection, filled with subject matter that is at times wry, magical, subversive, and always with an underlying dark humor, was a delectable, satisfying feast for my brain and soul.

From the titular “Dangling” to “Until They Are Both Empty” (my personal favorites) to every other story in this book, the reader is challenged to rewire their synapses as they consider perspectives that exist outside of their algorithmic bubble, witness conversations so uncomfortable yet so unflinchingly honest that they are breathtaking, or ingest ideas so totally outside of what may be considered normal that you are left silently mouthing "wtf" with a smile on your face.

Yzmore's Dangling is the witty, provocative collection curious readers have been yearning for and will absolutely enjoy. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Dangling is a tight, thoughtful collection of short stories that each land with a quick, unsettling punch. I liked how Yzmore takes everyday situations and gives them just enough of a twist to make you pause and think. This book was awesome. I really liked the bite-sized nuggets of stories that really explored a lot of different realities of the psyche. There were a lot of horror concepts, some of them genuinely terrifying and others just more mentally unsettling. There were a few that were more cringe worthy then actual horror, but it may be horror for some.

Thank you NetGalley for the advanced electronic copy! All opinions are my own.

Unfortunately this felt like a bunch of nothing to me. I (vaguely) appreciated the mixture of absurd / supernatural horror and mundane horror of the daily life, but ultimately there was nothing particularly remarkable or original about most of these stories. I also felt some heavy themes (homelessness, violence, sex work, etc.) were used haphazardly, almost as if they’re quickly tossed out just for the shock values alone rather than for something more substantial. Overall, this collection reads like some creative writing project by an edgy middle- or high-schooler who has been told she’s “mature for her age”.

Thank you to NetGalley, Victory Editing, and Anxiety Press for the ARC of this story. All thoughts are my own.

Dangling is a short story collection by Maura Yzmore that dabbles a bit in horror, a bit in sci-fi, but it mostly lives in the existential dark corners of the human psyche. The lion's share of these are quite dark, and the ARC came with some content warnings, including addiction, infidelity, suicide, sexual assault, murder, cannibalism, and animal cruelty.

What I Loved
When a story in this collection succeeds, it really succeeds. I also appreciated that the stories were bite-sized, making this a quick read.

What I Thought Could be Better
I know I just talked about loving the bite-sized lengths of these stories. However, some of them felt wildly incomplete. I would have loved even two or three pages of extension for a good number of these.

Overall
There are enough really interesting stories in this to make it worth your time, in my lil' ol' opinion. But do go into it knowing that the author leaves much for your imagination to fill in.

A wonderful little collection of short stories that jump out at you and command attention. Something that belongs with the other 'theatre of the absurd' tales I think. It'd be interesting to see these acted out in a way that Beckett and Pinter's stories played out and fascinated audiences.

Underfoot is a quirky start and leaves you questioning. Won't look at people on a train in the same way again 😆

The oddities continue and it seems the tone is set from the very first story. I love a story that leaves me with a "what have I just read?" feeling. I did feel drawn to Dangling (the story) as it reminded me of Stephen King's It. There's a difference with this story. It seems this is the alternative way to end up!

Frequent flyer is somewhat sad. I feel like he got the karma he deserved. Hindsight is a wonderful thing I guess and at least he used some power for good.

Clusterf#ck teaches a life lesson particularly if you don't want to lose connection with someone important.

So I think this is a case where the blurb promises one thing but the text delivers something else. There is *some* horror in here, but it is by NO means a horror collection. There is a TINY bit of surrealism here and there, but the flash fiction pieces are mostly "slice of life"/dramatic realism and lacking anything otherworldly/interesting - so it's definitely not majority speculative. I would not classify this as literary fiction, either - the writing is reminiscent of a YA novel (simple, clear prose with a juvenile tone), but describes adult situations (and way too many sexual or sex-adjacent activities). This one might be for someone else, but it really wasn't for me - I found myself bouncing off the writing style and the content. Yet, it is being advertised as if it is for me - which I think will end up being a problem down the line.

Despite the above, I didn't completely hate this - my range of ratings goes from 2 all the way to a couple of 4.5s. I'm just going to average my ratings for each individual story to be fair.

Underfoot - 3.5/5: A guy develops a fetish. Well written but nothing new.
Dangling - 3.75/5: This one was more creative and surreal, it had potential but was missing something. I would have loved to see this idea more developed.
Custom Welding - 2/5: I couldn't suspend my disbelief. The "why" for this one made no sense and the dialogue felt forced.
Magdalene - 4/5: It wasn't perfect, the ending was a bit sparse, but I really enjoyed the lead up.
Cranberry Sauce - 2.5/5: This was less horror and more soft erotic fiction, also about something quite overdone.
Family Business - 2.75/5: I needed more background/reason for this.
Crows - 3.5/5: A half page poem more than a story, this one *almost* landed.
Barry - 4/5: More feet, yeesh, but this one was fun.
Brownie in Blue Lights - 4.25/5: Best one so far, the twist came out of nowhere.
Frequent Flyer - 4.25/5: This one was sweet.
The Voids Underneath - 4.5/5: Great! I wish all the stories were like this. Unexpected.
Mortimer - 3.25/5: Okay, but didn't quite make sense.
She Giggled, Slippery in my Arms - 3.5/5: Great idea, just okay execution.
Everyone Says a Coffee Shop... [long title] - 2/5: This one was a nothingburger.
As Green Slime...[long title] - 2.5/5: Nothing sexual was needed to tell this story, and yet...
Pancakes - 2.5/5: A religious person might enjoy this one more than I did.
The Girl in Jake's Red Hoodie - 2/5: Ugh.
Spittin' - 3/5: Another half page piece, neutral.
Chuck E. - 3/5: A woman trauma dumps. Just okay.
Patron Saint - 4.5/5 - Not many great ones in this collection, but this one was very satisfying and written well.
Lightning Over Pasadena - 2.75/5: The situation was just too unbelievable.
Suit of Armor - 2.75/5: Kind of sweet, mostly nothingburger.
Through Thin Air - 3.5/5: I liked the premise, but it was too on the nose.
Until They are Both Empty - 2.5/5: Boring.
Imajean - 2/5: Oh come on, how shallow can you be?
Dorothea - 3/5: That escalated quickly.
Clusterf-ck - 2/5: The guy dodged a bullet.
Or Forever Hold Your Peace - 2.5/5: Boring.

85.25 ÷ 28 = 3.0446, so my final rating is a 3/5.

Review of ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for honest review.

Each story written in Dangling was unique, but I don’t think I would actually label them collectively as horror; it doesn’t really do the recurring themes justice. Is it surrealistic? You can say that. Is it transgressive? Hmm. Kind of? I think it’s pretty imaginative and solid; I can see these short stories did not start out as a random and thoughtless “hear me out … (insert crazy thing here)”, but there’s quite a lot of instances where I really feel like some rather heavy issues/themes were thrown carelessly, which automatically made some of the stories less appealing to me. For example, the slime one almost landed for me, but it just didn’t.

I didn’t completely hate this book even though it wasn’t really for me. I found it enjoyable; I personally love Dangling (wished this was explored more but I'm already satisfied though!) and The Voids Underneath. Also Crows is kinda up there, it’s almost a hit for me.

Thank you Maura Yzmore, Anxiety Press, and NetGalley for kindly gifting this ARC!

Well I can easily say this book has one of the shortest stories I’ve ever read at 1.5 pages lol

I can appreciate the vast differences between each short story.

A lot of the stories felt like I’d picked up a book half way through, read a few pages then put the book down. There wasn’t a lot of full circle endings. Fell a bit flat for me but semi enjoyed it.

ARC REVIEW. A collection of very short stories.

All of these stories seemed to be snapshots of lives, there wasn’t much horror to me. I didn’t care about any of the characters and didn’t like most of the stories. Not for me.
