The Current: Some things are safer whole than hidden.
Bud Parker has spent thirty years chasing a problem the world's best physicists gave up on decades sustained nuclear fusion, cheap enough and small enough to build in an ordinary garage. On an ordinary Tuesday night, he solves it.
There's just one problem. Someone already did — fourteen years ago. And buried it.
For Max Quinn and the small team at Solutions LLC, the discovery should be the triumph of a lifetime. Instead, it drags them into something they never saw a hidden government-adjacent apparatus with the legal authority to make a discovery — and the people who make it — disappear. A woman who found this same breakthrough over a decade ago is living proof of exactly how quietly that can happen.
With a sitting president who discovers he was never fully read into his own government, a retired Inspector General who's spent thirty years learning exactly how these things get built, and a physics discovery that comes with a use nobody wanted, Max and his team have days — maybe hours — to decide something no one should have to decide how do you tell the truth about something this big, to a world that might not survive being told all of it?
Some things are safer whole than hidden. Finding out which parts is the only way anyone gets out of this one clean.
