After a successful rescue mission at the Smoky Mansion, Nai has his long-awaited reunion with Karoku and sees to his recovery aboard Circus's 2nd Ship. Meanwhile, Gareki enrolls at the government school Chronomé Academy, where he applies himself to the Circus Program and experiences school life for the very first time. Though apart, both Nai and Gareki set to their individual endeavors, their hearts and minds never far from thoughts of each other.
Meanwhile, at Circus, Tsukumo and company undertake a dangerous undercover mission......
This omnibus officially wraps up the anime adaptation and moves onward with the story. While this was mainly set-up for Gareki's current stay at Chronomé along with Nai and Karoku's bonding time, it was still great being back in the Karneval world. I'm really excited to learn even more about Karoku and what Kafka could potentially plan next. Honestly, this series gives me such great feelings that I always can't help but smile when I either watch the anime again or read the manga.
Though the two volumes were a bit slow overall, it was mostly made up for cute interactions and some wonderful action in the latter half. It's a good balance and it's an aspect that I hope will continue to stay as the plot threads trek onward and familiar faces reappear ;). Silver Yogi anyone?
Hopefully my wait for the next omnibus won't be as long considering that my local library extended how old the items had to be in order to get them (now it's a year). I'm still very eager to see what will happen next and I'm in the need for occasional bishies in my life.
Beautifully drawn characters, as usual, and I love that; it's great in that regard. It just didn't feel that compelling, story-wise, this volume. I felt a few of the action panels were a little difficult to understand, and some of the dialogue bubbles were hard to read because the letters were so small because the artwork didn't allow for a lot of room (it could be a result of this edition being translated from Japanese into English, where Japanese kanji wouldn't have taken up much space, but I haven't seen the untranslated version, so I'm not sure). I do still look forward to more Karneval in the future, though.
I am consistently wowed by the level of detail put into each page of this series. Though it did feel a little bit like the story slumped since the last book (makes sense, as the last one basically finished a huge chunk of the story) and I wasn't always able to easily follow what was happening in some of the more action-oriented scenes (for example, in the training rooms), it was still a lot of fun to read. I love the humor, and it's fun to see the characters advance to their next stage of development, both as characters, in the focus of the story, and in their character designs (Nai is getting bigger!). This was also fun to read because, having watched the anime first, I'm now venturing out into parts of the story that I did not get to see in the show (boo, I wish it had been longer). It's a fun series, and I look forward to reading more.
Somewhat good, but fails with the tropes So we start off pretty good with Gareki going to school and Karoku and then we fall into the the trope of Gareki having to be better than Tsubame in just days, because man. Then we have Tsukumo and her partner needing saving by a man for what happens to them.
Overall the story is brought down by it's misogyny.
So, of course I adore it, it's Karneval. But I really don't care much for the stuff with Gareki at the Academy. I just can't get attached to the new characters introduced and I've never really been a fan of Tsubame. I do, admittedly, love the dynamic that leaves us with with Yoki, Tsukumo and Nai.
It would have been knocked down to four stars, but I love the second half of this omnibus volume with Tsukumo and Kiichi going undercover. I mean I adore that little arc. And I quite like Tokitatsu, so far.
So, this was pretty fun. I'm going to be continuing my reread of the series (after the part that was adapted into anime) so I can finally finish this thing!
I am so in love with this series! This volume takes up where the anime leaves off. Gareki is enrolled in school while Nai and "Karoku" remain behind with Circus. I want them all to be together, but am happy in how it's being handled. The art is lovely and the emotions are strong. Gareki! I miss you! Come back to the airship!
Another good volume. I'm liking this so far. Also I know I keep saying the art style is good. But the art style does keep getting better with each volume.
