Who Will Hear Me When I Cry

Rate this book
In the final chapter of the Tucker series, David Johnson introduces us to a new family – a family in need of the kind of help that only Tucker and her family can give. Benjamin Trevathan, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, and a speech impediment, is a boy saddled with adult responsibilities in the midst of his dysfunctional home. He provides the majority of care for his younger siblings and for his mother who is sick with cancer. His stepfather stays gone for days and weeks on drinking binges, only to come home to take out his anger and frustration on his family. This family’s nomadic life brings them to the house that Ella used to live in beside Tucker. Tucker sets her sites on the evil stepfather, while April, who has returned home with her own complications to live with Tucker, identifies with Benjamin’s struggles with being teased and bullied and decides she can help save him from self-destructing. This is a story of simple people engaged in heroic acts, the kinds of acts that change people’s lives.

Master storyteller, David Johnson returns with his popular Tucker Series with the 5th and final installment, WHO WILL HEAR ME WHEN I CRY, with some much loved old familiar characters, and a new family next door (Ella’s old place), in dire need of some much needed help -- for some laughs, humor, heroes, sacrifices, tragedy, love, and tough life lessons.

Having read all the previous four books in the Tucker series, fell in love with the characters, especially Tucker, and recently discovered the 5th in the series was out --was so excited, had to drop everything to move it to the top. Tucker and side kick Smiley are a dynamic duo, strongly reminding me of Tyler Perry’s Madea, and cast with their humor, wit, and drama. As always, David Johnson delivers a poignant heart-felt story, which will touch your heart.

Fans will of course enjoy the familiar characters of Tucker, Smiley, August, March, and April, the preacher, and others. However, the novel focuses on a poor family who has moved in next door and in desperate need of help. Wow, what a cast of unforgettable characters; however, was hoping for a book centered around August before it ended.

Hard nose Tucker (rough exterior) with a heart of gold (interior) takes the three children under her wing, (she is fearless and protects those she loves), and April with her own drama, problems, and addictions is a mentor for Benjamin Trevathan, the star of the novel. The family is highly dysfunctional, poor, and living a step above homeless, with a no good abusive drunk step father, leaving them with no food.

Benjamin, a young teen with Asperger syndrome, is overweight and suffers from a speech impediment. On top of being bullied at school, he has the care of the world on his shoulders. He has a warm altruistic personality, very intuitive ---taking care of his mom who says she has cancer and watches Elvis movies all day--while he takes care of his two younger siblings, and continues to be verbally and physically abused by his stepfather.

Your heart goes out to poor Benjamin, not allowed to be a normal teen and when a girl on his bus befriends him, he is smitten and a true loyal friend for life. (what beautiful journal entries)! The family needs help and the Tuckers step in to save this family before they implode. You have to love April’s spunk, even though she does make poor choices, and Tucker is one of the "best-of-the best" (just stay away from her bad side, or you may see the ax).

A perfect example: God puts people in our lives for a season, or a reason and this time, there are heroes and those who sacrifice for others. So sad the series is ending, as hoping for more to come!

Fans of Bette Lee Crosby and Catherine Ryan Hyde, will enjoy the Tucker Series, as people reach out to help those in need. Looking forward to seeing what comes next.

The Tucker series is highly recommended-- also landing on my Top 30 Books of 2014.

Please please this can't be the last book of this series

This is the most inspiring series of novels I've ever read. The writing and the characters are beyond awesome. Sometimes when I read a series, by the last book Im ready for it to end. This is not one of those. If I could speak to this author I would literally beg him to continue this series. I am definitely left wanting more.

Who will feel my sadness?

Wow! After reading the fifth and last book of The Tucker Series I've realized that some of the best reading that I have had the pleasure of reading in years is over! As most readers I fell in love with the young and innocent Tucker..... As her life unfolds and the family grows I found my heart stretching with love. As it concludes with the knowing of Benjamin and the birth of Aprils child..... I am filled with sadness. And I know that I'm not the only reader that these series heart has touched.

The entire Tucker series was one of those where you latch on to all the characters and want to know more and more. This was a family that some of us would scoff at but it was one that proves what love and faith can do. You won't regret reading this wonderful series! I laughed and cried and learned some lessons along the way. I certainly want the saga to continue.

This 5th installment in the Tucker series is an excellent read. The characters and story pull you in. In typical David Johnson style, the author takes you through a gamut of emotions and events that may surprise you. He tackles very challenging topics that make for introspection, and he leaves you wondering what you would do in similar situations. Note: There is a strong Christian theme in this series. The story reaches beyond any particular belief system and encourages the reader to walk a mile in the shoes of those we often judge.

This last installment brought the Tucker series to a beautiful end. I think it’s possible that this last one was by far my favorite of the series. We get to see the characters live out lessons they’ve learned in the previous books, and meet new characters who captivate their hearts. It’s been a long time since I have been so sad to see a series end.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Tucker series (5 books). The main character Tucker was an amazing woman. I loved reading how she overcame many obstacles in her life to become the strong, caring matriarch of her family. Her faith was restored and she never lost it during some of the hardest times in her life, her family followed her example. The characters all endured different struggles but came together and helped each other. I highly recommend these books, you won’t be able to put them down.

Amazing Tucker series!

This five star rating is for the whole Tucker series. From the first book (of five) to the last , I was totally engrossed. I never read this many and stayed interested. From the very first page of the first book, my attention was held. The main character, Tucker, was so captivating. I highly recommend you purchase the complete set. I hope Mr. David Johnson writes another Tucker addition to these. He is a marvelous writer!

Book 5 continues the amazing saga of Tucker and her family. The introduction of Benjamin and his family adds another dimension to the already mesmerizing tale. I couldn't put it down. The bittersweet ending left me in tears. Well done, Mr Johnson. You have left me wishing for book 6.

This is my favorite in the series. The perseverance and triumphs
were believable and heartwarming. Far from a happy story it still ended with satisfaction, at least for me.

OMG

Mr Johnson, how could you do this????
A new family moves in the house where Ella lived. Poor April is having trouble with pills and has a car accident. In the hospital,, she learns her rape resulted in a pregnancy. James tells her he will not raise the child so she goes home to Tucker. She meets the neighbors and takes charge! She gets Shady to fix up the roof and some other things. She helps Benjamin, who has been caring for his Mom and siblings, overcome his stuttering through music.
Benjamin meets Cassie on the bus and they become friends. A bully threatens her. Benjamin enters a talent contest at school and after his performance, the bully pulls a gun out and holds it to her head. April is in the hospital having her baby.
Ben walk toward the bully and he get shot in the shoulder. He keeps walking a the bully fired two more shots.
The book end with Ben's funeral! April names her baby boy Amazing Benjamin Tucker!
We need more Tucker books!!!!

Excellent finale to an Amazing series

So much life, love and wisdom ties into this entire series. I never thought it would end the way it did but what a beautiful and thought provoking ending. Lots of Christianity in the books especially this one but it isn’t “in your face” or “preachy”. It is only injected when it’s appropriate and fitting the characters and setting/circumstances. Well done.

Who Will Hear Me When I Cry was such a good book. The story line is outstanding and unique and the characters really come alive. Even though the reader might have never experienced people or lifestyles like those in the book they are described so well I think anyone would relate to them and identify with some portion of them. Highly recommend the whole series.

This book is as good as the previous four in the “Tucker” series. It may even be the best one yet. In this book, a new family moves into the house Ella had lived in before she passed away. The parents are negligent and the kids are nearly starving. The oldest son has Asperger’s syndrome and all the associated problems that go with it. Of course, the Tucker family becomes involved in the new family and all their many problems. David Johnson, the author, brings such in-depth insight to the characters that I feel that I know then all intimately. When I’ve finished one of these books, I feel like I’m saying goodby to my family.

I do not have words that can say how this series made me feel better than the author wrote himself, "
It was the imprint of their souls on my life, an imprint that will stay with me until I breath my last, and Your angel takes me by the hand to lead me to the other side.
To give you some idea of how much I read and how eclectically, I put down Maps Of Meaning to finish this series. It is the kind of work that leaves you hoping the author will write more, actually non stop. What I have learned from this series will forever be with me and strengthen me as well. Thank you so much David Johnson. I appreciate your work so much, Lynn Fux
