In this one we got a surprise reappearance of the Spiders, who appear to have two new members... one of whom is related to Kil. Dun dun dunnn... Whilst they seem to have succeeded in their mission already, I'm uncertain whether that means we won't see them again for a bit, or if they're going to be in this arc more. Honestly it's hard to tell at this stage XD
Meanwhile, Gon and Kil have separated to go on their own missions, and are both being followed (though not sure who's following Gon at this stage)... so I'm expecting a conflict between them and their pursuers in the next volume ;D
The Phantom Troupe members are all badasses!! I remember being so hyped up about them fighting against Chimera Ants when I watched the anime. Although they only fought the ones who invaded the Meteor City, their hometown, they still kicked asses! And Feitan fighting the self acclaimed queen Zazan was so incredible! They're villains but they're the kind of villains I want!
Killua was looking out for Gon once again. He wanted to act alone to separate Gon as much as possible from the enemies before their mission begins in ten days. He reminded his friend to avoid being reckless, which was Gon's nature! He was always worrying about Gon, which was a very natural thing to do as a friend, and Gon has no idea about what Killua's thinking about.
Now, Leol's team was in pursuit of Killua. He's alone and about to face a lot of enemies on his own. Even Gon was being followed by an unseen enemy. Little did they know they're about to meet they're own respective new friends.
It was cool seeing the Phantom Troupe again, especially as they play the role of protagonists to some degree. I liked seeing their powers on display and examples of just how dangerous they can be. Then we go to the main story with Gon and Killua and the others sneaking into a country to fight chimera ants, which has some neat battles but they all feel like filler waiting for the bigger confrontations. Some strategy, some cool moves, but Gon fighting no-names isn't all too exciting.
Loved that Phantom Troupe made an appearance in this volume. Carnage is in full swing. Selection has begun. The vibe does not feel shonen at all. It all a bit too macabre.
This volume starts by giving us an insight into how the world is viewing these new, dangerous creatures that keep appearing everywhere, as well as with politics.
I loved the first half for we got to see the Spiders. With Meteor City under attack by one of the chimera ants, the Troupe returns in order to fight it off. Seeing all of their abilities, and the wide-range of things they can accomplish with them was both exciting and refreshing.
Towards the second half, we return to Gon and Killua as they enter the Republic of East Goruto. I'm glad that they care about each other so much, they have a really unique relationship. Simultaneously, I can't help but worry about them both, especially as I know how this arc ends, but oh well, I guess I'll just continue reading.

2024- This is a series you almost need to read without too long a gap in between. It has so much going on, it is easy to forget what some group is doing. Also forgetting a bit about minor characters when they re-crop up. Luckily Togashi does a decent job trying to keep us in the loop. I love the placement map we get. Although I liked this series better when it wasn't so spread out in whom we are focused on. Good battle. I still find it weird to think of these 'ants' as weird chimera creatures. Animals to people-ish and another turn the people into creatures.... so bizarre but I love it!
This is the point where the Chimera Ant arc starts to get interesting as it narrows down to the main cast of characters and the main ants. Most of the really annoying ants have been dealt with by this.point so it gets much more fun.
Somewhat of a transitional volume, but oodles of fun nonetheless:
- The first half prominently featured the delightful Phantom Troupe, forced to play exterminators for the Chimera Ants who decided to expand their territory. Though not relevant to the overall storyline (except for the demise of certain ants), this volume showcased the more unknown Phantom Troupe members and their nifty abilities.
- Meanwhile, Gon and Killua split up (!), with Kil opting to thwart the Chimera Ant King's "selection" process by warning surrounding villages in the NGL. Gon tries to stay put and hidden, but the ever-improving ants prove to be capable of tracking him down. While Gon fights off some attacking beasts, a hidden figure watches on.
- If you were wondering why it was a little odd that, with such a dire event, that more top-tier hunters have yet to arrive on the scene, that is also addressed here. Darn politics!
This was so unexpected. Some of the Chimera ants, upon the death of their Queen, having no one to serve, ventured out into the world and Zazan made it to Meteor City. BIG. MISTAKE, ZAZAN. Hhaha. That's Phantom Troupe land. Yes, the Spiders were back and they sent Zazan and her minions packing. Now that was fun to read.
Neferpitou is such a pain. Always getting in the way of Gon and Killua. I can't wait for the time when her sins catch upto her. Also, I'm not sure if Neferpitou is him/her/they but she's a cat-chimera mix and gives me very feminine vibes and reflexively I tend to think of her as well, her. jxzndsmdxksl.
P.s. I don't understand why other Hunters are not rushing to help eradicate this Chimera problem. Anyhow, Onto the next one.
As I was going to accompany my mother to a car mechanic for regular checkup things, I decided I would load up this volume to read as we would be waiting. I was in the story as I sat in the front facing customer seating. I came home and finished it. I’ve been told that folks say this is one of the harder mangas to read and while I generally disagree with that I will say the mechanics of the world building, translated, do require me to go back and read again. Arguably, however, that’s because it’s a complicated world build and nothing else. 5 stars (really like 4.8 ish).
The Phantom Troupe is back!!! Their little adventure to take down some of the Ants is so much fun. Just to see them so nonchalantly and casually have fun fighting while the world is going crazy was so refreshing. They are one of my favorite groups in any manga. Gon’s fights with some Ants are fun and I liked seeing Killua use gorilla tactics to fight. A little worried about Killua at the moment but I think he will pull through.

The camaraderie between the members of Phantom Troupe is entertaining yet that does not diminish how truly cruel and evil they are. This is the same lot responsible for the Kurta clan genocide. Remember that.
Also, Godzilla being destroyed by, essentially, an atomic bomb was not lost on me.
I appreciate Togashi’s not-so-subtle social commentary on the brutal dictatorship of North Korea.
1.5 stars. I feel like the dialogue in this is poorly translated. Also, I'm sick of this series' dragging plot lines. The stories aren't well developed/a lot of the chapters feel like filler, even though they're tied directly to the main plot. I do like how the World Building continues to expand w/ each volume.
THE TROUPE IS BACK YIPEEEEEE. i literally forgot how cool they all and how strong and what abilities they all have. i feel like we still haven't seen most of their true strength at all. please always have the troupe around in some aspect <3 <3 <3 and now... a countdown to make sure to help as many people and kill the king and his guards. LETS GO
I'm glad that we're seeing old characters in this volume (it's been a while!). And we're actually able to get more of a feel of what the spiders abilities are and what they are capable of! I'm not so sure I like the plot point of this arc (the world is ending kinda theme) but it's well executed so far. I'm excited to see where it will go (especially with Gon and Killua's plan).
Amazing as always...this volume has everything. It has the Phantom Troupe being INSANELY awesome, Knuckle and Shoot being funny as hell, and the Ants becoming more and more interesting by the day. This arc is so good and I can't wait to keep reading. Great action packed volume.
days 10 counting down to day 8 - Has some filler fights like bat and owl vs gon - Killua just wrecking the military and pitou’s puppets – my favorite part with ikalgo - More foreshadowing of the election arc that I either didn’t pick up on in the anime or it wasn’t there..

Exciting volume because the Phantom Troupe makes an appearance and we learn more about their nen. The extermination team is starting their plan to beat the ants. Not much from the king but the cogs are in motion.
