In fairness, I will refrain from commenting on my own story in this collection.
My favorite is probably “That Was Falling” by A. E. Decker, which focuses on a boy in a training camp. He is about to be sold to a wealthy noble to work as a mindless bodyguard, and is desperate to keep that from happening. His situation is complicated when another of the students extends something more than friendship. I thought the story was really rich with emotion and it had a complete arc to it, which is hard to find in short pieces.
I thought the world building in "Atop the Scarlet Sky," by Eric Del Carlo was absolutely brilliant. I would gladly read a full-length novel set in this world.
"Death Strikes Twice" by Brian Koscienski and Chris Pisano probably had my favorite ending in the anthology. Fantasy stories can sometimes be predictable, so I greatly appreciate any story that can really surprise me.
Some of the stories felt a bit more like prequels to novels than standalone pieces, but I was okay with that. It was really nice to be able to dip my toes into so many rich and varied worlds without the emotional commitment of a full book.
I picked up this anthology after seeing it was edited by Andi O'Connor. What a pleasant surprise it was to find she also wrote a story as did two.dear friends of mine. So this book has double specialness for me.
All the stories included are incredibly well written and make you want more from each story. It is a great anthology that introduces readers to fantastic authors like Shenoa Carroll-Bradd and Benjamin Sperduto. it includes a little introduction to the authors before their stories that help readers get to know the author.
I absolutely loved "Across Silence and Darkness" where in order to have a magical gift one must sacrifice something. dr. derryl can turn dying people into animals. His world is shaken when a dying woman asks for him specifically.
