Stasis

Rate this book
Taking a job out in the asteroid belt seemed like a good way for Dan to run away from his painful past. After all, he would spend half of his six-year stint blissfully comatose in a stasis pod. Unfortunately, during his return trip to Earth, the ship’s computer that controlled his stasis had very different ideas.

An asteroid mine worker is returning to Earth. He should be in stasis for a year and a half, but the computer controlling the ship has other plans for him.

This short story had a surprise or two. I first thought that it was a typical 'evil computer/artificial intelligence' story. It is not. But if I say more, it would be a spoiler. So let me just say that this was an interesting story that just might make you think a little.

DISCLAIMER: I edited this story so can be considered biased. Beyond that, I do not know the author personally and he had nothing to do with prompting me to write this note.

However, the reason I want to give Stasis five stars and let people know about it is because I thought it was an outstanding story, very well written. This is meaningful because I generally dislike short stories and avoid them. Yet I was captivated by this one and think it's worth a read for anyone who enjoys meaty, clever stories with surprise endings.

My opinion is identical for the author's other story, The Girl Whom the Dragon Tattooed, posted here on Goodreads. Let's hope he keeps them coming!

This is a very good story; believable, thought-provoking and touching.
I felt a strong connection to the main human character. His situation was one with which I could empathise strongly. The two main AIs we meet are also well-written.

I am not entirely sure how the box that was recovered at the end came into being - was it planned ahead or a spur of the moment reaction? Sorry for the obscure phrasing, but I don't want to make a spoiler. I also feel that the whole ending was too quick and neat; I lost the sense of a real person in the last couple of pages.
