Reading The Power of I Am: Two Words That Will Change Your Life Today for the third time left me with the same feeling of peace and joy I felt the first time I read it. Joel Osteen throws out a challenge that I know I need to work at everyday--declaring that I Am worthy of complete happiness and total blessings.

The book speaks to the things that many of us already know, but so often forget. (As a parent, I know I consistently share similar quips with my kids. When will I listen?)
"Pay attention to what you're saying. Are you blessing your life? Or are you cursing it?"

"Whatever you're constantly saying, you're moving toward--positively or negatively".

"Negative words can keep you from becoming who you were created to be".

"As long as you compare your situation to others, you will never feel good about yourself".

Will you read this book and feel the same way as I do? I have no idea. Some may feel that Joel is speaking directly to them. They may feel that Joel's declarations will change their lifes for the better. Yet, I understand that not everyone is interested or ascribes to the likes of Joel Osteen. There are those who may be turned off by the repetitive nature of some of the lessons included in the book. And, there may be those who do not like the fact that not all of Scriptures included in the book are properly cited.

The point is that I challenge you to read and decide for yourself. I just know that this will not be the last time that I read this book.

****
2020:
My fourth read and I am just as filled, if not more, as when I read The Power of I Am the first time. Reading this book is such a powerful way to refresh my soul. Osteen’s words continue to challenge me to grow in my relationship with God. I am encouraged to readily and excitedly declare my faith. I am encouraged to bring joy to those I come in contact with. I am encouraged to know my worth through the eyes of the Lord.

I will continue to read this book at the beginning of each year. Who knows? I may begin to even pick it up some time throughout the year.

In his book, Mr. Osteen has taken the very name of God, I AM (Exodus 3:14), and used it to craft a repetitive, saccharine self-help book straight from the pages of positive psychology. His quote "One of the best things we can do is take a few minutes every morning and make these positive declarations over our lives," shows that Mr. Osteen uses the Bible very liberally to reinforce his own view that being positive will make everything turn out well in our lives. He says "Our attitude should be 'I am approved by Almighty God. I am accepted. I am a masterpiece.' When you talk like that, the seeds of greatness God has placed inside will begin to spring forth."

We are only accepted of God through Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:5-7 says "Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace."

Consider the words of the Apostle Paul:
"…Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief."
"I am crucified with Christ…"
"…when I am weak, then am I strong."
"…I am the least of the apostles…"
"O wretched man that I am!…"
"…I am carnal…"
"…I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation."

In his physical nature, Paul realized that he was nothing and deserved nothing. The best thing we can do is go to the real I AM, lay our sinful selves at his altar and be saved through the sacrifice of Christ's blood on the cross. Then, allow the Holy Spirit to guide our lives and be conformed to the image of His Son. (Romans 8:26-29)
John 8:58 says "Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM."
John 14:6 says "Jesus saith unto him, I AM the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
Acts 4:12: "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is NONE OTHER NAME under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

It is easy to get into negative thinking. I try and stay positive but we all fail at some point.

This book shows you how to use positive statements in your daily life. It is broken into different affirmations and stories attached to each one. Examples are:

I Am Focused
I Am Prosperous
I Am Victorious
I Am Generous
I Am Secure

…and many more

This is a big book with over 250 pages of beautiful words and messages to keep you on the path of positive thinking and powerful personal development.

I love this book! I have been reading one section a day and love adding the I Am statements to my thinking for positive results.

I AM. The two most powerful words in the English language when combined together.
1
Surprisingly, Osteen tackled this topic in his most recent book. The I AM teachings have been taught and written about in metaphysical circles for nearly 80 years, but most Christians regard these teachings as heresy. The Mighty I AM has been in vogue again due to The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. “When you say “I am”, the words that follow are summoning creation with a mighty force, because you are declaring it to be fact. You are stating it with certainty…Knowing this, wouldn’t it be a good idea to begin to use the two most powerful words, I AM, to your advantage? How about, “I AM receiving every good thing. I AM happy. I AM abundant. I AM healthy. I AM love. I AM always on time. I AM eternal youth…”

Here, Osteen takes a page from Byrne's playbook and adds a heavily Christian slant to the material. Rather than just throwing I AMs out there, Osteen titles his chapters with topics such as I AM Forgiven or I AM Anointed (the best and most insightful chapter in the book) and the most powerful chapter, which closes out the book, I AM A Miracle . For the most part Osteen succeeds in bringing a fresh perspective to these teachings. I do however think he stretched the topic thin in his chapter on being Framed. All in all, this was a fine book and a good addition to the Mighty I AM teachings.

I have never been a Joel Osteen fan, in fact I have never listened to him or bothered to pay any attention to his fame and popularity. However after receiving this book from a client of mine I felt compelled to give it a shot. I was honestly amazed at how much I could relate to his message. Even if you are skeptical there is no harm that can be done in any of the recommendations contained in this book: be more positive, help others, and even increase your own motivation and awareness. These are things I often tell my own clients, as a psychologist. It has honestly helped me and allowed me to encourage my clients in a different way. Definitely worth your time!

** This 2-part review is posted on my personal blog. This is part 1.

I am. “What follows those two simple words will determine what kind of life you live.” (pg 1)

Osteen says that the words that follow I am should be nothing but positive affirmations about our self. For example, I am: blessed, successful, talented, wise, wonderful, healthy, victorious, qualified, prosperous, valuable…you get the idea. After 3 introductory chapters, each of the remaining 16 chapters focus on an I am statement. For example, chapter 4 is entitled, “I am blessed, A magnet for blessings” or chapter 7 entitled, “I am a masterpiece, See yourself as a masterpiece.” The book is somewhat repetitive, each chapter presenting similar ideas from a different angle.

Osteen says that we must dwell on these I am statements about our self, and he provides a list of I am affirmations. We should speak them, read them, meditate on them, and “get them down in our spirit.” (pg 13)

Do I even need to make the observation that there is something narcissistic and profoundly self-centered about all this? It is an ego trip. I wrote an entire chapter in my own book (Positively Powerless) on the dangers of pride. I hardly think that Philippians 4:8’s encouragement to think about things that are lovely and excellent is inferring that we should be thinking of ourselves as lovely and excellent. Colossians 3:1-2 says to fix our hearts and minds ON JESUS. But I digress.

Oh wait, Osteen assures us this is not pride, but a quiet confidence (pg 5). Phew.

However – I’d suggest that instead of this being about yourself, imagine it about another person. Imagine a close friend or co-worker who continually says wonderful things about his or her self. I’m quite certain you’ll find them intolerable to be around! They will be viewed as self-important egomaniacs. Or perhaps just viewed in a sad way, as deeply insecure individuals.

But wait, that’s not what this book is all about. This book is about the power of words. The reason we must speak these affirming words about our self is that when we “continue to speak them, they will become a reality.” (pg 13)

According to Osteen, words have creative power. They are like electricity. “You have to send your words out in the direction you want your life to go.” (pg 42) You must “invite” good things into your life through the power of your words. Positive words about yourself will bring health, strength, and abundance your way. Negative words invite struggle and lack. “Nothing happens until you speak.” (pg 35)

Whoa, my friends. Whoa. Joel Osteen is a Christian who pastors a Christian church. The book frequently references characters from the Bible, and random Bible verses are referenced to provide support. Analysis of that will follow in part 2. But for now…

Words have creative power and we “send them out” to bring good into our life? As I read Osteen, his words were eerily familiar to me. Why? I recently wrote a book where I researched the history of the positive thinking movement. The philosophy Osteen is promoting about the power of our thoughts/words comes from the “New Thought” mind-power movement of the late 19th century.

Far from Christian, this movement was birthed in occultic and mystical subcultures, with influences from eastern religion as well. The “god” of this movement was viewed as an impersonal force, and not as a personal being. Thoughts were perceived as “things” with a mystical type of causative power to influence reality and “attract” events to your life. Perhaps you have heard the phrase “law of attraction” which has been re-popularized in our day through author Rhonda Byrne and her book The Secret. The seeds of the modern New Age movement are from the late 19th century New Thought movement as well.

Maybe you think I am going off the deep end here. Am I accusing Osteen of being into the occult or New Age? No!

But having recently read original source material from both historical and modern New Thought/Law of Attraction movements, Osteen’s teachings clearly echo it.

Ralph Waldo Trine was a prolific New Thought writer of 100 years ago. Listen to Trine’s words: “Send out your thought–thought is a force, and it has occult power of unknown proportions when rightly used and wisely directed–send out your thought that the right situation or the right work will come to you at the right time, in the right way…”

That. is. Joel. Osteen.

As said, I am truly not saying Osteen is into that stuff. Rather he has been influenced by it, whether he realizes it or not. We have all been influenced by it. The New Thought movement eventually became the positive thinking movement of the mid-twentieth century and transformed American culture.

I think Osteen is a naturally optimistic type of guy, and it was easy for him to inadvertently (?) blend “thought power” with Christianity.

However, that does not work.

When you blend two things whose core teachings contradict each other, this creates a myriad of problems. You end up with a weakened Christianity, whose tenets are undermined, and with distortions of Christian belief.

Putting the non-Christian roots to the side, I appeal to common sense.

Do you really think it is possible for mere words that come out of your mouth to: emanate power in the universe, create, attract events…and ultimately alter reality??

If so, you are indeed a very powerful person.

I must emphasize that this is NOT about having a good or bad attitude in life. If you are grouchy and angry all the time, this will not likely lead to a promotion at work. This is NOT what Osteen is talking about at all.

In part 2, I will provide analysis of Osteen’s interactions with the Bible. Please know that I am not attacking Osteen as a person. He sure has a winsome smile, and I think he means well. Years ago he took the mantle from his father, feeling unequipped to do so, and I think Osteen never imagined where the ministry would go. Yet here he finds himself years later.

"The wrong "I am" will keep you from rising higher." (Joel Osteen, The Power of I Am)

What "I ams" are you speaking over your life?

The following are some of the "I ams" I wrote down while listening to this audio book that Joel Osteen encourages his readers to declare over themselves:

• I am amazing
• I am a masterpiece
• I am a child of the most high God
• I am attractive
• I am beautiful
• I am valuable
• I am young
• I am confident
• I am secure
• I am royalty
• I am excited about my future
• I am victorious
• I am blessed
• I am anointed
• I am talented
• I am improving
• I am getting better and better
• I am successful
• I am surrounded by God's favour
• I am not who people say I am, I am who God says I am.
• I am approved by Almighty God.
• I am accepted
• I am not lacking
• I am not average
• I am not inferior
• I am equipped
• I am empowered
• I am anointed
• I am wise
• I am more than a conqueror
• I am well-able
• I am blessed
• I am prosperous
• I am successful
• I am victorious
• I am talented
• I am crowned
• I am creative
• I am wise
• I am healthy
• I am in shape
• I am energetic
• I am happy
• I am positive
• I am passionate
• I am happy
• I am strong
• I am confident
• I am secure
• I am beautiful
• I am attractive
• I am valuable
• I am free
• I am redeemed
• I am forgiven
• I am anointed
• I am accepted
• I am approved
• I am prepared
• I am qualified
• I am motivated
• I am focused
• I am disciplined
• I am determined
• I am patient
• I am kind
• I am generous
• I am excellent
• I am equipped
• I am strong
• I am courageous
• I have the DNA of a champion
• I am who God says I am
• I can do what God says I can do
• I am valuable
• I am a masterpiece
• I am a child of the Most High God
• I am amazing
• I am one of kind
• I am prosperous.
• I am anointed.
• I am equipped.
• I am forgiven
• I am redeemed
• I am a miracle waiting to happen.

There is power in declaring these "I ams" over ourselves. When we declare these "I ams" over our lives, they start to manifest in our lives because our words have creative power. We can use our words to build ourselves and others up or we can use them to tear down. We need to be careful of what "I ams" we are declaring over ourselves. The wrong "I ams" are saying things like "I am clumsy", "I am stupid", "I am not smart", "I am not good with saving"...

We might think that the words coming out of our mouth are only words, but make no mistake, they are creating the reality we have in our lives.

It's time to get the right "I ams" coming out of our mouth and be blessed, highly favoured, anointed and lead by the Spirit of God. Angels are dispatched by the words that come out of your mouth. We are inviting blessings or cursing by the words we are speaking.

So much more in this book that cannot be reviewed here. My favourite chapter was the last chapter in which Joel Osteen teaches on how we can become someone's miracle and are someone's miracle. God has made us to be their miracle...be it a kind act, an encouraging word, a hug, help of some kind...excellent chapter!

This was a very inspiring, supportive book for anyone looking for assistance to uplift them from their troubles. After a few general chapters, the author gives 15 chapters of specific "I am(s)"...such as,
"I am blessed", "I am strong," "I am prosperous" with stories to
explain the "I am(s)". The style is the same as his sermons which are broadcast for TV--inspirational and filled with hope. Some of the stories I recognized from having heard in one of his sermons.

I felt like a "David" ready to slay my "Goliaths" after finishing this book. It is one that will be helpful to reread on a regular basis--especially when one's life presents challenges.

I get that this author is big on positivity and that affirmations of the sort are a big part of his agenda. I like that about him. We certainly need that in this world today.

He spends a lot of time in all of his books and his sermons talking about what God can do for you. Important? Yes. Absolutely. To know the power of God and how He can bless us is big but that always leads me to the question, "What can I do for God?" And I can't find that in this author's books. I always feel like I want some instruction or questions to ponder or something to chew on. However, having said that, this book came the closest to giving me the "more" I've been missing. So 4 stars.

So I used to be a fan of Joel Osteen's books and sermons. Then one day my husband pointed out that he pretty much only preaches on prosperity. Now I can't get that out of my head and notice it all the time because it's true. It's not a bad thing. I just get tired of it after a while.

So with that said, I was listening to this book and made it through the 3rd disc before stopping. I got the message in the beginning and felt like he was just repeating himself in different ways.

Not sure if I will pick up another one of his books or not because of that hubby of mine!

Same story with a different title.

I love what Joel Osteen had to say, but I wish he would change it up a little. I have heard some of those stories many times over.

The Power of I Am is a book meant for repeated readings. Its message is simple and extremely important, yet is almost always forgotten during times of distress. Believing in ourselves; knowing that, no matter our missteps, God forgives and believes in us; knowing God wants to help us achieve the plan he put in place for our lives, if only we will allow Him; this book is a helpful reminder of these things, and a wakeup call to refocus our lives and live optimistically.

What Mr. Osteen has to say here is not new or groundbreaking, but we need to be reminded of it again and again. The book uses repetition to great effect. The more I read, the more the message resonated with me. The examples from Mr. Osteen’s own life and the examples from the Bible are also used effectively. The Power of I Am is an excellent resource to turn to when we start to feel the frustrations in our lives pulling us down.

Many words would be needed for me to fully explain why I dislike and disagree with this book. Goodness.

In brief, "I am" is repeated ad nauseam in this book and not once does smilin' Joel note that it's a key biblical name for God. Rather, you the reader are the "I" under discussion.

And to expand a little, here's the book's recipe: take one generally true idea (e.g. thinking positively is better than thinking negatively when it comes to achieving one's goals), combine it with an out-of-context Bible verse or story, and—voilà!—general self-help knowledge now has a biblical stamp of approval!

Ugh.

Discover the Power of Your Own Words

I’ve heard Pastor Joel Osteen numerous times on the television but never listened to one of his audio books—until I heard THE POWER OF I AM from cover to cover. If you are saying negative messages aloud to yourself or others, you will learn why you need to stop hearing this audio book. There is amazing power in the words that you speak and this message is affirmed over and over in this book.

I found the information and stories in this book encouraging. It was worth every minute of this audio book. I highly recommend THE POWER OF I AM.

In the Power of I Am, Joel Osteen shares the importance of speaking positively and saying powerful I am statements. He begins the book by revealing how countless people are declaring negative I am statements over their lives and they are cursing their present and their future. Some examples of negative statements would be, “I am so average, I am so unlucky, I will never get married, I’m getting old, I’m so overweight, I will never get well, and much more. What we need to be declaring over our lives is: “I’m healthy, I’m talented, I’m blessed, I’m strong, I’m attractive, and I’m forgiven. Joel Osteen strongly believes that if you speak negative words, you will call in and receive all the negative reports you are prophesying over your future. But if you speak life and believe what God has said about you, then you will call in good things and your life will dramatically improve.

Joel Osteen shared a powerful story about saying so and declaring out loud life enhancing words. He shared Psalm 91 and this passage talks about saying of the Lord that He is our refuge and our shield and how He will deliver us and protect us. One of his staff members was struggling with infertility and they have been trying for ten years. She came to work one day and told her coworkers that when she has this baby, she would be out for a few months. She would also tell them that they would have to find a replacement to fill in for her when she was on maturity leave. She would constantly talk about it like it was going to happen soon. The doctors told her it wouldn’t ever happen and she might as well explore other options. But she held unto her Faith and talked like it was already going to happen! It took twenty years before she became pregnant and she gave birth to twins!

I would recommend this amazing book to anyone who is longing to improve their lives and they are ready to learn how to speak powerful I am statements. This book helped me to realize how negative I speak about myself and my circumstances sometimes. I have struggled with speaking life about my body and trying to lose weight. I have begun replacing the negative thoughts and I have changed my thinking about my weight. I have already lost 25 pounds by eating right but this journey started when I worked on believing and saying that I’m strong and well able to watch my calories and to stop eating the wrong kinds of food. I also loved how Joel Osteen encouraged the single people in this book. The chapter on being patient really hit home to me. Joel Osteen shared how scripture stated, “Those who believed enter into the rest of God”. When God has a set time for your dream to come to pass or for you to meet the right person, it won’t be a second late. This encouraged me to keep believing that God has forgotten about my desire to get married and have children. It’s easy to look at all my friends getting married and having kids and I’m still waiting. I was deeply touched by being reminded that God can easily move me from point A to point Z just like that. I don’t have to worry about when or if. I just have to believe and trust God and His timing and be patient and run my own race! If you’re ready to begin speaking life over your life, then read this book!

This was a great book. It helped me to see the thoughts and words that have become habits for me that aren't helping me - may even be hindering! I only gave it 4 stars because he uses a ton of scripture but doesn't cite the specific references. It was probably in the footnotes, but because I listened to the audio version, I couldn't see those. That was my only complaint. Otherwise I'd recommend it to anyone struggling with negative self-talk or letting struggles in life get you down.

I didn't finish this book. I read it because I was curious about Joel Osteen's writing since he's so successful and well known as the senior pastor of Lakewood Church, the largest megachurch in the U.S.

The book's central message is that whatever individuals say after the words "I am" has an effect on their lives. Now, whether you believe that this phenomenon is due to your faith, the tenets of "The Secret", or what's recently been explained by neuroscience as our thoughts and words making physical impressions in our brains--it's up to you. Osteen refers to the phenomenon as God providing a "command blessing," which acts as a magnet to attract whatever people say after "I am."

However, that one message, while it makes for a nice Sunday sermon, does not justify a whole book. Osteen basically repeated the message word-for-word or in different ways for the 25% of the book that I read. Feeling like I'd gotten the gist, I stopped there.

Being from a Southern Baptist background I've always knocked preachers like Mr Osteen. But The Lord God is opening my heart and mind as I get older and wiser. I'm so thankful I read this book! It has helped me have a more positive outlook to my Christian walk and expect God to work miracles in my life. And indeed He has. I've expected a healing from chronic Fibromyalgia and in the last two weeks I have had almost no pain at all and I'm expecting zero pain period when its all said and done. This book is great! Your words and expectations definitely play a role in your life and how God works in your life as well.

I have read this book twice and have gifted my sister and nephew with this book. This book is an encouraging treasure chest of hope to those of all ages and nationalities. Hopefully, whatever circumstance or celebration that comes your way, you have words of comfort, in this beautifully written book, to carry you through. Joel includes the testimonies and the stories of others to inspire you. This will be another book of wisdom for me. A book to love!
