The Curse of Raven’s Run by Kathryn S. Evermore

This book had me sleeping with the lights on, and I mean that as the highest compliment. I wasn’t expecting to love this one as much as I do, especially since paranormal romance isn’t usually what I reach for first.

Mina moves into a secluded, allegedly haunted house in a sleepy New England village to write her horror book. Strange noises, unsettling encounters and dreams that feel far too real start making her question what’s happening around her. And honestly, the house alone would have been enough to make me reconsider staying there.

Then there’s Thomas Black. Handsome, mysterious and unsettling in a way that made me want to know more about him. There’s so much mystery surrounding him and the town’s past, and I kept trying to piece things together as I read.

The dreams were a big part of what made this story so creepy for me. They felt vivid and strangely real, adding another layer to the mystery without making it easy to figure out what was going on. I loved that feeling of not quite knowing what to believe.

The atmosphere is eerie, the house has that unsettling feeling that something isn’t right and the story kept me curious about what was really happening. This was such a good reminder that sometimes picking up something outside your usual genres can surprise you.

If haunted houses, ghostly encounters and mysteries with a paranormal romance twist are your thing, this one is worth adding to your spooky season reads.

Thank you to Kathryn S. Evermore for the digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I am not typically a romance reader (unless it’s queer and even then, I don’t often read just romance) but this book was more than that. Yes, it’s a paranormal romance, and yes, the romance is central to the plot, but there was enough mystery and intrigue to pull me in. Not only that, but I was hooked from the very first chapter.

This is Evermore’s debut and while there were some minor issues with her writing (excessive ellipses and exclamation points in the dialog), there was just something about her storytelling that pulled me in. Even with this being translated to English from German, the way Evermore writes is simplistic but mostly satisfying. Her writing suited the story being told well.

The story itself was fascinating, but the present-day tale as well as the historical one, and Mina’s discovery of both was a fun little journey. The plot itself was a tiny bit predictable, but it didn’t necessarily detract from my enjoyment. In fact, the plot and the mysteries were what kept me practically salivating and not wanting to put this down.

Character-wise, things could have been a little more fleshed out. Without giving away spoilers, the MC was only really interesting in her own right through the historical tie-ins.

I’m glad that the book didn’t completely end on a cliffhanger, though the ending did make me curious about what would happen in the sequel. I very much enjoyed this book and would recommend to most everyone.

Thank you to the author for an eARC of this book.

I want to thank the author for this wonderful opportunity to read this amazing book! I do hope for a book 2!

An author Mina moves into a haunted house to draw inspiration for her Paranormal Romance about a ghost finding love with a human. Mina meets a new man Thomas and there’s so many questions about the peculiarities of this man and the fact that no one else appears to see him. The house definitely has its quirks and after a seance gone wrong creepy things keep happening. Her fiance is a control freak who does not believe in her work and expects her to just be his wife and mother of his children. After meeting the team at the Blackwood Observer a lot of questions start getting answered.

This book started off as a cozy, small town, paranormal fantasy that had me hypnotized. I was entranced in this world and the mysteries unraveling and was surprised by a lot that was revealed. I highly recommend it!

***I received an advanced copy from the author. This is my honest opinion.***

Kathryn Evermore weaves the past and the present together in an intriguing love story between two seemingly unlikely individuals. Her story captures the attention quickly and keeps the audience on their toes. Her writing is clear, concise, and thorough.

Overall, I was entertained by Evermore's story. This is outside my usual and preferred genre to read, and Evermore kept my attention. While I enjoy the occasional ghost story, I'm not a big fan of occult practices. Reader beware of occult practices being discussed in the book. Not a deal breaker but just something to be aware of.

This was such a good book! I love the way it was written and the clarity of the story. It was.not what I was expecting at all, but in the best possible way. Epic love, drama, life or death moments were all written incredibly well in this book. I hope many more people discover Ravens Run and come along for the ride. Mina is an amazing and resilient character who as a human has flaws but that is why I loved her! What an exciting journey to trek through lifetimes and magic. I sincerely hope we get book 2!

A Word from the Author

Since I’m the author of this paranormal romance myself, I wouldn’t want to rate my own book — that wouldn’t exactly be objective, would it? 😊

Instead, I simply want to say thank you to everyone who has already joined me on the journey to Raven’s Run and taken the time to leave a review. ❤️

For the most part I truly enjoyed the story that she was trying to portray. The first 100pages or so were repetitive and I felt that the translation lost any feeling the book was trying to capture. It was a bit dull. But as I continued the story and the conversations were definitely more relatable. I the idea that the author was trying to get at was good.

This is a fabulously cosy paranormal small town fantasy.

Mina rents a quirky, haunted house in order to help with inspiration for her romance novel about a human who falls in love with a ghost.

Her fiance is horrible control freak who does not believe in her book and thinks that women are only useful as wives and mothers.
Mina meets Thomas when she arrives and quickly realises that there are many questions about him.
