George has failed, and his demons are threatening to swallow him whole. Jesse’s life is slipping through his fingers. He feels like he’s losing George, whom he has just gotten back. The search for Elliot is taking its toll on the pair of them, and the strain shows the cracks in their trust.
Zac is doing everything he can, but he's been plagued with flashbacks of a life he can't remember. Even his iron constitution must break sometime, and the search for Elliot can’t wait. Each minute could be the difference between life and death.
Can they get it together to save themselves or Elliot?
When not staying up all night writing, J.R. Gray can be found at the gym where it's half assumed he is a permanent resident to fulfill his self-inflicted masochism. A dominant and a pilot, Gray finds it hard to be in the passenger seat of any car. He frequently interrupts real life, including normal sleep patterns and conversations, to jot down notes or plot bunnies. Commas are the bane of his existence even though it's been fully acknowledged they are necessary, they continue to baffle and bewilder. If Gray wasn't writing…well, that's not possible. The buildup of untold stories would haunt Gray into an early grave, insanity or both. The idea of haunting has always appealed to him. J.R. Gray is genderqueer and prefers he/him pronouns.
This book is smart, complex, and engaging. Jesse and George confront the nature of their relationship, Zac begins to face his own missing childhood memories, and all search for Elliot, who has disappeared. Read all of the books in the series in order to get the full impact.
This is the fourth installment in the ‘Bound’ series, which I would classify as a contemporary M/M erotic romance, containing skilfully and tastefully written BDSM.
This was a long-awaited book for me, as I am a huge admirer of the entire series.
Thankfully, it proved to be more than worth the wait.
In my mind, the fourth book in this series stands out a little from the others.
Firstly, it is slightly darker and goes in a little deeper; a mini-study in the psychology of guilt, failure and internal confusion. In addition, it contains a faster-paced action. The plot is engaging and the events flow smoothly. There is also more head hopping this time and I really enjoyed this rich multiple POV perspective, provided in the third person narrative.
There is also a bit less sex than I expected. It is not exactly a criticism and fair enough, the characters are kept pretty busy trying to find and save Elliot and dealing with their own rapidly accumulating problems. Although I must confess I am a little resentful J.R. Gray did not allow a Zac and Jared encounter, when the air is clearly sizzling around them – a wonderful combination of animosity laced with enormous sexual tension.
The best shiver-inducing sex scene in the book undoubtedly happens between Rafael and Daniel during their stalking role-play in the club. I loved the whole concept, damn sexy!
I was positively intrigued by Eric, a newly introduced character, who could potentially shake things up a little and constitute a serious threat to Jessie and George’s relationship in the future.
I loved and simultaneously hated the ending; cliffhanging, on-the-edge-of-your-seat kind of finale. I am quite sure the Author had tons of wicked fun writing it, being a self-confessed sadist. However, I must grudgingly admit – it does make for a great setup for the next story.
There are three major factors I find particularly appealing about Gray’s writing in general.
The first one is the ability to develop multi-dimensional and compelling characters. Gray seems to be drawn, like myself, to what is broken, deeply flawed or permanently bruised; we share a fascination for the themes of mental trauma, psychological scarring and guilt. This results in Grey creating a set of tantalisingly complex characters with darker personality traits, struggling with unresolved past emotional issues influencing their present. There is plenty of heart-wringing angst, shadowiness and imperfection featuring in Gray’s books and that is precisely the way I like it. No trace of overbearingly mushy naivety, characteristic of so many romances.
The second aspect is the ability to write BDSM erotica in an aesthetic and refined manner but also, and more importantly, in a way that is authentic and believable for the reader. I could not possibly count all the books I have read, written by authors with obvious no real life BDSM experience, that made me squirm, wince or even burst out laughing at the awkwardness and phoniness when I was supposed to feel highly aroused and erotically inflamed. Many books sound downright ridiculous when meant to be sensual and titillating, due to the lack of factual accuracy or true understanding of the subject. That is NEVER the case with Gray. It all rings true and my God, it is bloody hot!
The third thing I find appealing is Gray’s style of writing. Natural, concise and precise, void of unnecessary words with a hint of humour.
In essence, J.R. Gray delivered yet again for me. I give this book a 4.5 rating. Legally Bound, the first book in the series, remains thus far my favourite with Damages Incurred not far behind. It is an excellent, witty, gripping and moreish read. I will be impatiently anticipating the next installment in the ‘Bound’ series (and hopping next time Zac will get to have plenty of sex….)
I’m going to start this review at the end of the book and say that the author has left me climbing the walls! So many unanswered questions, loose ends and dilemmas …. Anyone know when book 5 is due?
Damages Incurred doesn’t hang back it rather throws you straight in at the deep end and picks up where Illicit Activity left off. Who can forget that line from the very possessive and irrational George,
“I am here to get my submissive.”
It seems like finally Cill is going to get her comeuppance but where does that leave George and Jesse?
Daniel and Rafe hit a rocky patch as a mysterious woman from the past shows up. Elliot is missing, possibly even dead, and George is feeling responsible. He has spent so many years building walls around himself that its heart breaking to see him almost lost. Jesse is worried that it’s all becoming too much and he may end up losing him.
Zac plays a major part in this story and we get to see so much more of Jesse’s bratty brother. What are his memories? What is he missing? He is like a one man wrecking ball in his bid to find Elliot but by the end of the book he is still an enigma. Jared plays a major part in tracking Elliot down but what will he be able to offer him if he is ever found?
The ending….OMG the ending…. What has Jesse agreed to? This is a superb addition to the Bound Series and one hell of a ride. I feel like I have written a review that is full of questions but that is exactly how I felt when I finished the book. So much possibility and so many options but now we must wait and see how JR Gray will allow it to play out.
If you are new to this series you need to start at the beginning. This story is not just about one couple but a whole host of people whose lives slowly but surely become entwined. There are some real characters in this series, some that initially you won’t like very much, but they grow on you and when you finish a book it feels like you are leaving friends behind.
Not that all the stories in this series aren’t intense because they are but this one is even more so! Our author has been putting our characters through trial after trial and making them fight hard for each other and their relationships!
This one has some funny moments because when Zac is involved there is always at least one moment of funny.
Beautiful, painful, tragic and well written! Love it!
I just want MORE!!!! This was the best one yet although George...I don't quite understand where you are coming from at times. Mystery man. The mystery over what happened to Elliot dominates this storyline and I really enjoyed the twists and trying to figure out what was really going on. Because Jesse is my favorite character, I can't help but empathize with him. It always feels like he's getting the short end of the stick. I hope we get more stories so he can get the full happy ending he deserves.
Each book makes me want more. I love the stories of George and Jesse, wrapped around Raf and Daniel... poor Elliott... it breaks my heart and for Kennedy as well... Jade is also someone I would have like to have had more of a story line on...he would have been good or Elliott.... and Zac.... don't you just hate him! ...yet love him to death!!! You get so wrapped up in these characters! and all the intrigue around them... the plot is always thickening! Can't wait for the next book!
At the end of "Breach of Contract" I was left reeling for George and Jesse. Eeeeep I thought ohh these two are going to have a happily ever after. Dan and Raf were going to be ok they will work through their stuff. No biggie. After the Christmas teaser that was, "Illicit Activity", we were introduced to the idea of new couple Zac and Elliot. Awesome can't wait to see how their relationship develops. Well!! I should of known J.R. Gray doesn't do happy go lucky, hunky dory! My God, be prepared to have your heart shattered!!! You won't be the same again after reading this book.
"Damages Incurred" picks up somewhere between books 2 and 3. George and Jesse are starting to build a life together, while a threat is seeking to tear Dan and Raf apart. But their world is blown apart after they find out Elliot, one of George's submissives, is missing. It's a race against time to not only find him in one piece, but to keep their relationships intact.
I truly did not know how this story was going to go. I knew in the back of my mind this was not going to be a hearts and flowers type book especially from the synopsis but damn, give a girl a warning. I had sharp pains in the old ticker when I was reading this story. As much as I love Dan and Raf, the couple that started the series, I was all about George and Jesse. I will say, Jesse deserved a gold star for how much he has evolved in his relationship with George. He's opening himself up and being honest with the man he has very strong feelings for. On the other hand, as much as I love George and he's my everything, I was disappointed with how he decided to go in this book. Still secretive and elusive. It was like damn, Jesse is giving you the moon and back, you can't throw him a freaking bone? And I get it he's the Dom. That's just the way he is, but how do you expect Jesse to be open and honest when you really aren't that way with him? *sigh* I still love this couple and at the end they are facing a huge huge situation. So I can only hope this brings them closer in the next book.
What I love from Gray is that this series is plot driven and loves to give you different subplots throughout the book. I feel you never become overwhelmed with what's going on. You are able to handle the crazy with no problem. This book was a perfect setup for the next one. Soooo many ways it could go. It's unreal. I was left a mess at the end of this one. Don't think for a second you can handle starting this series with this book. Where have you been! Take yourself to the first book and see where it all began. You will not be disappointed!
Out of 5 stars, I'm giving this a 4.5. Very well done! I can't wait to see what's next!
Mama's Dirty Little Reads received a complimentary copy of Damages Incurred by the author in exchange for a honest review.

OH! MY!FREAKING!DAYS!!!
That was my first thought when I finished this book. So many layers, and subplots. So much pain. So much anguish. So much love too!
George fetches Jesse (yes, he FETCHES him!) from Cill, George also open up, a bit to Jesse, but we still don't know the real George, the one thats locked away so deep and for so long that I don't think even George knows THAT George anymore.
Daniels and Raf had an issue, that while they talked about it, opened up to each other as they should have done last time, its still unsettled.
Elliot goes missing and Zac and Jared go on the hunt to find him, both wanting so desperately to be the one who finds him. And Kennedy thinks about leaving town.
My overwhelming feeling after finishing this book is MORE. I want MORE, I need MORE. Let me try to explain a little, cos let me tell ya, its so hard to word what I want to say! I usually say I want more when we only here from one or two persons in a story, not so here. We get everyone here. I usually want more when I don't get all the information I need, not so here, at least, for this book, I get what I need, in so much as the story goes and flows and maeks sense.
WHAT I need more of here is this : things are thrown wide open, lots of things unsettled, unfinished, unresolved, unsaid. Lots of questions thrown up in my head!! So many questions that the answers can only come from a further book. And there HAS to be another book, there really does. My life will not be complete without those questions answered and these people get their HEA. Although I'm not sure George can ever really be truly happy.
This is a much darker, deadlier instalment. Forced drug abuse, drug dealing, kidnapping and even murder take part here. Its makes for a much more compelling read. The others ain't no picnic, but this one is much heavier! And I LOVED it!
I really can't stress how much I enjoyed this book, but equally how much I hated that ending! I hate being left hanging so badly!
This is, so far anyway, my stand out book of the year. I'm so glad that Merissa passed them to me!
I felt like the door had been slammed in my face when Breach Of Contract ended. But, boy did it get flung wide open in Damages Incurred.
George being George never does things by half. Throughout this book we get to see a little deeper into the man known as The King. Is that a good thing? Hell yes, I don’t want more, I crave it. I’ll take the rough with the smooth any day. Jesse just about gives me heart failure in this instalment, for more reasons that one. There’s times I wanted to wrap him in my arms and times I could have swung for him. Daniel and Raf face a few obstacles; would it be a Bound Book without them doing that? Nope. Kennedy, she decides that a new venture may be her way out. Something that made my heart sink. And Zac ends up facing more than he ever thought possible, but tackles it head on. It’s Jared though who cops for a lot of it. Zac, plus a confined space, plus Jared… I cried laughing.
Everyone’s focus, Elliot. Where is he, what’s he done, what’s happened?
Be prepared. You are taken to some dark places and meet some new, even darker, people. There is a depth to Damages Incurred that is over and above what I have seen before in the Bound Series. Limits are pushed and emotions run higher than high and lower than low. My eye’s glazed, my stomach rolled and I had to walk away a few times to compose myself, for numerous reasons.
Will they find him, won’t they find him? I know the answer to that question; I’ll let you find out for yourselves.
What I’m left with though, in true JR Gray style, is a string of questions and a jaw that hit the floor when I finished reading. It can't stop there, surely????
A no hesitation 5stars. The only thing left to say is… When does Bound5 get released?
This book, and then by nature this series, went heavily into nighttime drama mode in the best of ways. In just a few chapters we reconnect with all of the characters from Daniel and Rafael, to George and Jesse, to Kennedy, Zac, and Elliot. The series started out with Daniel and Rafael as the focal point, but has evolved to carrying many storylines and Gray keeps all of the plots spinning.
The storylines all connect to each other in both subtle and not so subtle ways. This book also starts going a bit deeper into the characters’ pasts. There is internal conflict combined with on page action that balances each other out well. Many of the characters have darker personality traits and Gray is just beginning to peel back the many layers for some of them.
George and Jesse remain a focal point here and their dynamics remain intriguing. Jesse remains in conflict with himself between wanting to be everything George needs and also wanting to be seen as an equal. Their exchanges are well written as all of this plays out with George trying not to be amused with Jesse’s brattiness. Jesse is also trying to get George to open up and finally manages to just merely crack the surface of George’s tough exterior.
Having felt as though he has failed Elliot and felt that he has failed as King, George must now come to the terms of his past that follow him and can and will destroy him. George will either have to let go of the past and decide if he can open up to Jesse or have the relationship suffer for it.
Jesse for his part now feels as though his world is little by little slipping apart with his relationship with George. The strain of trying to find Elliot has now become between Jesse and George along with George withholding his past from Jesse.
For Zac his mission is to find Elliot and find him fast. Trying to work with others including George is a mission that Zac has never had to deal with before. Now not only is Zac having to deal with George, he has his brother Jesse involved and none to happy about that included. Now time is of the essence to find Elliot and bring him back, but for Zac there are moments of flashbacks of his life that keep resurfacing that are getting in the way.
Both George and Jesse will have to decide if this is worth fighting for and can Jesse walk away from George again or will George release him for good.
So much to think about here...but worth the risk to read.
George, Jesse, Elliot, Zac, Daniel, Rafe... the gang is all here... AND SO BROKEN! Of course my immediate worry was George and Jesse because I love them. Zac took me by surprise. Getting into his head was an experience that's for sure. His need to get to Elliot was powerful. Of course, because is JR Gray writing this book there was a ton of nail biting involved. My heart shattered for George. I was sweating with worry for Elliot, and Zac... I wish so many things. Let's not forget Jared of course. I'm still not sure where I stand with him. I like him, but... well you make a judgement there. I don't envy George with all he has to worry about. And yes there are still questions that need answers to so I'm desperate for book 5! This series has been a roller coaster of emotion. One of the best BDSM Series I've ever read. JR's ability to mingle hot sex, and great plot, dabble suspense over it, dip it in a pool of intense characters then light it on fire, is a unique thing! I adore this series. She's an amazing writer. She uses her talent pushes her limits and because of that we get a treat of a lifetime!
Whew! What a ride! I feel like this book took a turn I wasn't expecting. Drama, and angst took the front seat and romance and BDSM got the back seat this time around. Which is fine but I also feel like a switcheroo was pulled. Originally I thought this series would have more Daniel and Raf, but they were almost nonexistent in this one, at least compared to George and Jesse (which I am fine with) and Zac, Elliott, and Jared's little triangle. Out of everyone, I still love Daniel and Raf and want more of them, and I simply don't care for Zac, at all. I was hoping he would redeem himself in someway, and maybe he will, but right now he's just coming off as a selfish, cocky, prick. I'm not faulting the author for having a character who is arrogant and overconfident at all. I, personally, just don't like those types. Maybe that is what was intended, and if so then, she accomplished that! I AM STILL LOVING Jesse and George. I think it is important that while they are still trying to balance a romantic relationship with a D/s one, that Jesse is holding onto what he wants out of it also. Definitely looking forward to the next book!!!!
I knew this book was not going to deliver hearts, flowers, rainbow pooping unicorns, or happily ever after, but I sure didn't expect what I got! I was so eager to get my hands on Damages Incurred, but I read the first three over again while I was waiting so I could fall in love with the characters all over again. Once again after #3 I was left with my mouth hanging open and NEEDING this one in my hot little hands. Gray didn't disappoint, delivering another plot driven novel full of twists, turns, emotion, and naughty bits. I don't want to give too much away, but there were times I wanted to smack George, even though I understand why he is the way he is. Even though I wanted to smack him, I love this character so much. Upon finishing Damages Incurred I was left once again wanting to beg for more! I cannot wait for #5 and more from these complex, beautiful written men. Gray didn't disappoint with Damages Incurred!
And the wait is finally over! I've loved this series and was not left disappointed!
J R Gray is my guilty pleasure writer, MM add BDSM with a proper, concrete story line and it's a winner.
Damages Incurred picks right up and I was hooked. George, Jesse, Raf, Daniel, Zac, Kennedy and of course little Elliott are all suffering, the damage evident to see in all of them.
I love everything about George, from his persona to the sadist caging the clawing beast to set free within.
Gray can write a good plot line that's centred around the BDSM lifestyle but not dominated by it, it's a thread but very much storyline driven.
Goodness I don't think I can handle the wait to see what happens!
The pounding pace in the search for Elliot is like a train bearing down on you. There is just no way to ignore the danger, even when passion flares hot and fierce. I love the edginess in these men, as well as their ability to have such deep connections despite their attitudes. Their power exchanges are intense and incredibly hot, which makes waiting for the next book so much harder.
This series gets better and better. I still love all the characters..Daniel, Jesse, Rafael, George and Zac really is so interesting. SO many questions about these guys and their pasts! I love that there is more than one relationship being written about and love the interactions between the couples. Do I still ship Daniel and Jesse a bit. Yes, yes I do. And after that ending I need the next book NOW!!!
The story plot was great. I couldn't get enough of the books in the series until the last chapter. The author ended the book worse than another other book I have read and believe me I have over thousands of books. To redeem himself he should write another book to end this series better. I am so upset about the ending.
Normally I don't want to throw a book at the author for leaving me hanging. Gray has managed to make me curse his name more than once with this installment. There is a lot to take in. I suggest tissue with this one.
This series started as a semi dark BDSM venture with a decent mystery and turned into a suspense driven mystery thriller that has gone way beyond expectations. Each book is better than the last. You definitely need to start with the first book but the story arc will take you places u wld not suspect from the start and there is no way it is finished with this installment. Don't skip over the short novella that is book 3. It is important to the story.
I look forward to the next installment. If the trend continues 5 stars will not be a high enough rating.
