Sometimes you just need to get out of reality for a while and read a good paranormal fantasy. It is not my most favourite genre, but I really enjoyed this fun mythological/paranormal fantasy Midnight Burning by Karissa Laurel.

Solina travels to Alaska following the death of her brother, to organise his belongings and his apartment. While she is there she spends time with her late brothers best friend Val and his friends, and their employer Thorin. It soon becomes apparent that whomever killed her brother is now after her. She has dreams of wolf-like creatures and discovers that her brother was killed by being torn to shreds by a wolf. Soon she is on a quest to discover who she really is and who she can trust, and is running for her life.

First of all I had to comment on the cover. I love it! I'm not sure why it grabbed me so much when I saw it, but it suits the book perfectly and is absolutely gorgeous!

I really enjoyed this book. It was well written, REALLY well written. The book grabbed me from the start!

I loved all the characters and it was great to watch them and their relationship with Solina develop. I loved Skyla, I found her to be one of my favourite characters. And I enjoyed Solina's character. Even though she did a few things that annoyed me.

I am not a big fan of love triangles in books. They make me cringe. A lot. But Laurel is clever here, she makes it a love triangle without having any of the characters actually commit. So its not a love triangle exactly.... Its hard to explain, It just works. I love the tension between the characters, especially Solina and Thorin. I was hoping that a bit more would happen between them, but she is obviously saving that for subsequent books!

I enjoyed the first half of the book more than the second half. I was actually expecting it to be a werewolf story, but it most certainly isn't. It is so much more than that. Once the truth came out and Solina discovered who she was, it started to get a bit too mythological for my liking. Its just not stuff I'm particularly interested in and a lot of the characters and mythology was over my head. However it wasn't all about that and still had an awesome story line, so I still enjoyed reading till the end!

Speaking of the end! Loved the ending! I will absolutely read the next one as I want to know what happens!!

Would I recommend it?

Yup! For fans of paranormal fantasy. It was a fabulous story, a great escape from reality for a while and was really well written. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Thanks to the author Karissa Laurel for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

A Nordic myth loving-fest with action, mysteries and sexy Nordic men.
Solina is morning the death of her brother. She goes to the small town in where he lived and worked to find answers and settle his affairs. She suffers from dreams, terrible nightmares that involve her brothers death and a wolf like creature. she wants to find some answers. First she must deal with two very different men who knew him well.
Aleksander Thorin looks like a Viking, ice blond, imposing body with a side of menace. He comes off gruff and cold. This Nordic hunk was her brothers employer.

Val was his friend, and is excited to have her in town. He is the flirty fun guy that her brother brought home with him before.

Both imposing, both sexy, both hiding something, secrets hidden always come out eventually.
This town, these people, the mystery changes everything as Solina knows it. Her light will finally shine, as the truths unfold. As her knowledge increases so does the danger. She must place her life in the hands of these men, but she doesn't do it blindly. She keeps her head centered on the goal, and doesn't fumble into rescue me princess mode.
Fantastic urban fantasy, with just the right amount of action, danger, mystery, hunks, gods, tease of romance, and mythology to make my reading heart happy. Wonderful world building and character development, and this is a first book ! Absolutely, an author to watch and follow if her first book was this great.

" He was beautiful...in the same way a size hundred pound feral tiger is beautiful."- this is about Thorin, meow, get me some catnip

"Regrets are like scars-emotional wounds that never heal quite right."- truth

Wow... this was AMAZING! I could not drop the book.

There was so much going on! I don't know how to describe the book without ruining any of the surprises.

Solina is a simple girl from a simple town. She’s comfortable working hard at the family bakery every day. When she gets news of her twin’s death, she finally leaves her bubble for the first time to take care of her brother's things in Alaska. The official reports said he was killed by an animal. Her dreams and premonitions tell her there's more to it... and she is not going to stop until she finds out who/what killed her brother.

In Alaska, she meets her brother's friends. Some of them even help her on her quest, but there are secrets everywhere.

The story had some romance, but it wasn’t intense. I hope there's more heat in the next book. I loved the action and fantasy. I need book 2 now!

The story starts with a subdued sister looking into the mysterious murder of her twin brother. She suffers from frequent nightmares after his death and feels disconnected and lonely.

She visits Alaska to take care of his personal belongings and find out what actually happened that night. People warn and discourage her from looking deeper, which makes her more determined to find answers.

After some life threatening incidents she learns that the Norse Gods are hiding in Alaska. < I love stories set in Alaska>

I adore books with Gods and immortals, larger than life characters where things can turn to chaos in a second.

The villain was great. She had a blue print for a new world and was not above repeating the Apocalypse to make things happen.

I am not a fan of vague endings and this was the only part that bothered me. The lead was disoriented, so was I.

This story had a quirky concept, a murder mystery set in Alaska with hidden Norse Gods

DNF at 40%

I guess I'm in the minority on this one. It has really high reviews on Amazon and Goodreads, but I never felt pulled into the story. There were a ton of characters introduced early on, and yet I felt nothing for them. The plot seemed to drag and the dialogue felt "forced" to me personally. I made it to around the 40% before deciding I had no interest whatsoever to continue this one. I'm glad it was offered on kindleulimited, but it is nowhere worth the listing price of $5.99 in my opinion. It won't be a series I continue or recommend.

…And the Hidden Gem Pile just got one book taller! Midnight Burning Karissa Laurel satisfies mystery lovers, mythology lovers, paranormal lovers and those who like a little pinch of romantic spice in the potential shape of a triangle. What makes this a standout? Location, action, characters, dialogue and intrigue, not to mention the ever-present danger!

Solina, a small town baker from the Southern East Coast has come to Alaska to settle her late brother’s affairs. Already trying to come to terms with his death, she can’t help but feel things are not as they seem on the surface. His best friend and his boss are most helpful, in their own ways, but there is something being hidden from her and it isn’t dirt under the rug. They each both attract her and repel her at the same time romantically, but is that just her frayed nerves or desperation? Nobody is talking about Mani’s death, not even the law, but she is going to find out what really happened. What she discovers is unbelievable, incredible and deadly, very deadly. People are not as they seem, Mani had a secret life and hers is about to go through the wringer. Will she come out a little sadder but much wiser? Have her dreams been trying to prepare her for what she is about to learn? Who is she really down in her soul?

Grab your mittens, the hot chocolate and get ready to enter the world of fantasy, told by a new and impressive author with an imagination as big as Alaska! Wonderful characters, some who grow into themselves, some who are flirty, some standoffish, but not all are on the right side of the battle between good and evil. Karissa Laurel has a wonderful foundation for a new series that promises to be a nailbiter as the gods clash, and one young woman may be the key to victory! Talk about coming out of her (Solina’s)shell when things get tough!

I was really excited about reading this book for a couple of reasons: she's a baker (so am I), the majority of the story takes place in Alaska (a place I've always wanted to visit), and there's a mystery involving the main death of the main character's brother (I love a little mystery).

The whole story was pretty exciting, what with the twists and turns, and I love how the author writes, the words that she chooses to use. I am a fan of mythology, and it's always fun to see how different authors can pull that kind of stuff into their stories. It was also interesting watching Solina (the main character), find her true self on this adventure, especially at a time when my adventure is helping me to do the same thing (though it was a pretty extreme change from how she sees/describes herself in the beginning - sometimes her sarcasm, standoffishness, and need to do things on her own was a little too much).

I did have a couple of issues with the characters. On one hand, they were good, enjoyable, made me keep wanting to read the story so I could find out what happened to them, but on the other hand they were too easy, and, as with Solina, too much. Val and Thorin were too perfect, and everything was just too sexually charged when it came to the two of them. Maybe that's because of the "romance" part of the book, and maybe that's what romance fans like, but it was a little off-putting to someone like me, who's not a big fan of romance. Skyla was pretty cool, and the more I learned about her, the more I liked her, but she was very stereotyped.

All in all, a great book, and an author that I'm going to keep my eye on. I'm curious to see what she gives us next.

Note: I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. Please remember that this review is my opinion based on my impression of the book.

Mythology, legend, and kick-ass women! “One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.” - Friedrich Nietzsche

“I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge. That myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful than facts. That hope always triumphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death.” - Robert Fulghum

This dream was worse, So. Much. Worse. Than all the others. Horrifying, bloody, savage. And the worst part?

It was true.

Solina’s brother is dead, torn apart by a wolf-like creature. A monster who talks. Who thinks, and plans, and has yet another goal.

Kill Solina. Eat her alive.

A baker by trade, an introvert by nature, Solina Mundy is pulled to Alaska where her beloved twin met his end. Ostensively, to gather her brothers things and close down his apartment. Realistically? To find out what really happened to her brother. Everyone is hiding things. Everyone apparently knows things she doesn’t. And they have no intention of telling her anything – or of helping her in any way. Go Home, Little Girl. Nobody wants you here.

Like. Hell. Solina is afraid, sure. She is, by nature, passive. A homebody who spends her time working in her parent’s bakery, kowtowing to their every wish. She has always left her twin, Mani, to be the adventurous one, the one who allowed her to live vicariously through his actions. But now, Mani is dead, and Solina is meeting obstacles every way she turns. Mani’s boss, Thorin, is a cold, unwielding jerk, belittling and demeaning in word and action. Val, on the other hand, is a Player, in all forms of the word. He was Mani’s best friend, and helped Solina though the first few months after Mani’s death. But now that she is there, she finds that he is more like a bull moose in rut than a real friend, and no matter how she tries to keep him in the friend zone, he keeps pushing, pushing, pushing. No respect there, only a single-minded determination to drag her into bed, no matter the pain it brings Solina when she comes to realize that he only wants to screw, not to be real friends. Val, the “Patron Saint of the Perpetual Erection.” Sigh. What a jerk. When she needs a friend as much now as she did when Mani died. Possibly even more.
Then, Solina meets Skyla. A former Marine and one tough cookie, Skyla is the woman Mani loved. And she loved him as well, with all her heart. She isn’t about to let his death go unpunished. And if helping Solina will help her meet that goal, she is all over it. Sol and Skyla quickly become close friends. Which is all to the positive, as the world begins to blow up around them.

You see, Solina and her twin are more than they ever could have expected. And if their enemies have anything to say about it, Solina will die as her brother did, ripped apart by a monster. And then?

And then, the world will burn.

This book is amazing. Really amazing. It delves into a mythology I have read very little about, and I found that incredibly refreshing. I don’t want to give things away – whatever I say will cause spoilers, and as I know my review will be one of the first ones out there, I don’t want to ruin it for other readers. Suffice it to say that it is a wonderful pleasure to watch a woman like Solina, an introverted woman who never even raised her voice in the past, much less her hand in anger, grow into someone who is learning to embrace her own power. This isn’t a Mary Sue “I was just a normal person and now I magically kick backside” sort of story. Solina takes the pain and gets up, over and over again, learning the whole way, making mistakes, and suffering for it. She isn’t stupid – far from it. Those around her, except for Skyla, treat her like she is worthless – though the whole world, and their own survival, balances upon her staying alive. Their dismissal of her Ticked. Me. Off. Which makes it even more fun when she takes their dismissal and slowly, but surely, turns it back on them.

This is, I deeply and profoundly hope, the first of a series. The book doesn’t end on a cliff-hanger, per se. But there is plenty of room for the story to continue. My only problem? Now I have to WAIT for the next one!!! Sigh. That is going to be MASSIVELY difficult!!!

I Highly recommend this book for those of you who enjoy a well written modern day Fantasy with a mythology you certainly haven’t read much on before (if any), well-developed female characters (yes, with an ‘s’ – there are several well developed characters here, even if one of them makes me want to slit her throat and watch her eyes dim to empty black), a creative story line and wicked good thrills.

Midnight Burning was received from the publisher in exchange for a realistic review. I will have the next in the series on my Must Have list – I enjoyed it that much.

"I inventoried my attire: one huge T-shirt bearing the logo of Thorin Adventure Outfitters. The T-shirt was the entirety of my wardrobe. Inventory concluded.
“After you help me to the couch, your mission is to find me some pants,” I said. “I don’t even want to know how I got in this state.”
“Thorin—” Skyla began, but I signaled for her to hush.
“Like I said, I don’t want to know.” "

I admit that I bought this book purely because I love the cover. Yes, I am that fickle. This isn't even a genre I normally read, and to date is probably the only paranormal urban fantasy book I have read.
What is even more surprising is that I really liked this story of a young girl travelling to Alaska to pack up the belongings of her brother who recently died under strange circumstances.
Once she arrives, Solina is drawn into the wild world that her brother was part of and decides to find out more about his death. This comes at a high cost as Solina's own life is threatened by forces beyond her expectations.
Seriously, this storyline would have had me running for the hills. In the book's own words:

"It was about as believable as a lion wearing bunny ears."

However, the story was written in such a funny and charming way that I found it really engaging - the book did not try to be literary fiction and instead embraced being a fun read:

"She unlocked a door and towed out a silver and neon-green kayak. “This is Molly.” “Your kayak has a name?”
“It’s good luck.”
“I thought that was only for ships.”
“Shhh,” Skyla said, patting her boat. “She thinks she is a ship.” "

And just when I thought the story would turn into your middle of the road werewolf legend, Midnight Burning hooked me Norse mythology that was detailed enough to make want to research further legends of the same origin. Norse mythology - who'd have thought it could work even though the setting of Alaska was a bit odd in this context?

The only disappointment I felt was the end, which was not satisfying my need for closure and obviously is supposed to open the story to a sequel. I am not a reader of series and had I known that this story was going to spill over into a sequel or series, I would have passed on reading this - the lovely cover notwithstanding.

So, 1 star taken off for a rubbish ending.

"I had put my foot down and bent three ancient heroes to my will. Thorin even condescended to make a pot of coffee. Suck on that, Wonder Woman."

⇝My Thoughts⇜

This felt like a lot longer than 278 pages on audio. This was over 10 hours long…10 hours of unlikable characters, lines delivered in the wrong context and an annoyingly done love triangle (or square).

I don't usually get this upset with love triangle's, but this one really irked me. Solina flip-flopped almost the entire book between Val and Thorin and ran hot and cold in her interactions with each, throughout. She pushed away then pulled them in and pushed away again. So much so, that I'm thinking she really likes Skyla instead. Skyla accused her of having a girl crush, even. I think the narrator is at fault for how cheesy the lines were delivered, she was not on her game at all. This could have been a really good story, otherwise, because the Nordic element was an interesting one. I just couldn't get past my dislike for these characters and the narrator to really listen to it.

Will I continue this series?⇜ Nah…I'll pass.

This book was awesome! It’s definitely on my list of ones I’m recommending to folks right now. I was nervous the book would be more along the lines of horror when I read the cover, but instead it’s a delicious mystery with a great fantasy twist that you won’t realize until a little ways in. Set in Alaska, it had me itching to finally make my way up there because the imagery is gorgeous.

Solina is just trying to come to terms with her brother’s death, but through it she is also forced to grow out of her own shell. I love books that, if not quite coming of age, are coming into your true self. She finds herself stuck with Mani’s best friend and boss who both are hiding something despite finding herself drawn to both of them. There were the beginnings of a love triangle, but wasn’t explored too much in this first book. Instead, Solina finds some kickass female friends and sticks up for herself.

As a warning, the book ends quite abruptly and with you begging for more. I will definitely be looking forward to the next in the series!!

Warning: Contains violence

Who should read it? Fantasy and mythology fans with some outdoor adventures thrown in there.

An excellent story extremely well told and filled with engaging characters who have great interactions! Also featuring a strong an interesting POV character who draws you step by step into the story. On top of all that: this is one really cool book! Norse gods battling it out in Alaska?! Sign me up for this and all the sequels!

Solina goes to Alaska after her brother is killed in what can only be described as a crazy animal accident. Once there she looks deeper into his death even though most of his friends tell her to leave it alone.

This book started out a little slow for me but it quickly picked up speed. Between Solina's weird dreams of her brothers death and the way his friends acted once she got to Alaska, I knew that this was going to turn into a good mystery but I wasn't prepared for the creepiness that flowed from the pages. This story creeped me out. It's like that feeling you get while watching a Horror movie late at night when you're all alone and then become too afraid to go to the bathroom by yourself. Ya know what I mean?

Val and Thorin are two characters that made me laugh more than once in this book. Val was a buddy of Solina's brother, he worked with him and seemed to have a big crush on Solina. Thorin was her brother's boss but he was snarky, secretive and I knew right away that he liked Solina. Even though there are hints of a romance, the romance never got off the ground in this book.

When Skyla decides to help Solina get to the bottom of what's really going on, they end up endangering themselves and Val and Thorin come to their rescue a few times. When we finally get an explanation about what's really going on and who the players are, it ends up making me even more interested. I was totally immersed in this story and the interesting paranormal element that pops up. This book does end on a cliffhanger though and you all already know how I feel about those. This was free on Amazon when I picked it up so I'm glad about that because this was entertaining even if it did end on a cliffhanger.

*JOINT REVIEW* MIDNIGHT BURNING BY: KARISSA LAUREL
Wow! Admittedly I had read a few early reviews of this from my buddies and I already had a good feeling about this book, but I still always go in to something like this with certain doubts that it will end up being as good as everyone says. Fear not, friends, I can say this truly lived up to all the hype!

I really wasn’t quite sure how big the fantasy element was going to be here, especially throughout the first third of the book. It was a slower paced accession into that fantasy element, which I was actually grateful for. It enabled the mystery to build to peak height, and then crest with a glorious turn of events that I didn’t quite see coming. Maybe those better versed in that specific area might grab the clues earlier on, but even if you’re like me and you didn’t, it was the perfect pacing to be eased into it along with the main character, who was just as naïve. I was so invested in the mystery of Sol’s brother’s death already, so when the world started to open up I was even more amped to continue!

The characters were just as alluring and mysterious as the plot. I couldn’t get enough of them. Sol was the best! I loved how down to Earth she was. She seemed to this average young woman who was kind of thrust into this awful situation, being so far away from home for the first time, and on a mission to find out what exactly happened to her poor brother. I really respected how assertive she was, even though she was scared and completely out of her element, and surrounded by a bunch of people who clearly knew more than they were letting on, she still managed to keep pushing for answers with her head held high. I liked that she was such a strong character, but she also knew her limitations, she pushed limits but still used her head in situations. She was smart enough to know when she was in over her head, or when to not be a smartass, and those qualities are not to be undervalued! I especially loved it when she ultimately decided to become more self sufficient too. It’s always nice to see a damsel in distress start to tale the reins and fight for herself too, rather than sit back and wait for a prince to save the day.

All the other characters we learned more and more about as the story progressed, and boy were they all incredible too! And I know we only have just begun to really get to know them! I seriously couldn’t get enough, the more I learned the more I wanted to know.

This wasn’t really a cliffhanger ending, but it was apparent that this story is not finished, now I just need to survive the torturous wait until book 2!!!

Jen’s (http://bookwormcoalitionjen.booklikes...) thoughts:

For the most part, I agree with everything that Tricia said. After the first 40% things most definitely picked up, but it was that 40% that had me questioning if I had the patience to keep on going. I even took a few days off from reading Midnight Burning, I text Tricia who assured me that I needed to stick it out, that all of the beginning stuff that I called “nonsensical crap” was worth my time.

It was so hard not to blab what I knew was coming, because I KNEW it was right up your alley! Brownie points for me, yay! lol

AND… she was right

Although Midnight Burning was slow at the beginning, once I finished I realized that it didn’t take anything away from the book. It just made it that much better and also made me realize I have the attention span of a freaking gnat.
I went into this with absolutely no idea what it was about, I had a conversation with Tricia where she fangirled to me about getting a request to review it (yeah, I totally did the fangirl happy dance when we got the email, not even going to lie). Never once did I expect that Midnight Burning would encompass one of my absolute favorite things in the world.

And no, you get no spoilers here!

I cannot wait for book 2, I mean there has to be a book 2…right??
P.S. I don’t like Val, something is way up with him. He’s got my spidey senses in overdrive!

Jen, I totally agree something seemed shady with him!

The idea behind this book was great. An inexperienced southern woman traveled to Alaska to find out what really happened to her brother, and then weird things began happening. More was going on than she knew. Sounds cool, right? Unfortunately it wasn’t executed well. The writing was decent. It was well edited and didn’t have plot holes.

I couldn’t connect with any of the characters. Even a good story isn’t interesting if none of the characters are. Solina considered herself to be a prim and proper southern woman, a people pleaser, and someone who didn’t take risks. None of her actions reflected this at all. She mouthy and rude. The only person she aimed to please was herself. She took a hell of a lot of risks for a cautious person. Other people often withheld information from her (although they had their reasons), which annoyed her, but she didn’t divulge anything she knew to them. Why did she expect others to be open and honest with her when she couldn’t do the same in return?

Val was her brother’s best friend and had been a source of comfort to Solina after her brother’s death. All she did was push him away. It didn’t make sense to me why she found the one person in the group she’d known the longest to be the most untrustworthy. He was vocal about his desire for her, but she could have flat out said she didn’t want sex. Instead she treated him poorly. Val’s character needed more development. Mainly he was overly protective of and horny for Solina.

Thorin was cold. He had a bit of a “you don’t want to mess with me” edge, but was too rigid and uptight to be a bad boy or any kind of fun. There wasn’t much to him. Solina claimed she didn’t trust him but deferred to his opinion when it came to what she needed to do, which went against her constant insinuations that she could do what she wanted and didn’t need to rely on anyone. It’s beyond me as to why she ever warmed to him, but it happened.

Skyla was simply there. She didn’t have much of a personality. Her purpose was to be a friend who had no potential of becoming a love interest and to feed Solina info when no one else would. All she did was fill that purpose. She lacked any unique characteristics to make her stand out beyond her role.

Of course there was the dreaded love triangle. It was obnoxious especially since Solina didn’t have any deep desire or interest in either of the men. All the men did was act like jerks and be macho in their attempts to make the other guy back off. The large roles the men played meant that the love triangle drama was at the forefront.

I remember doing a cover reveal a while back for this book and thought it sounded really interesting. So I followed the book for a while and saw some really great reviews so went ahead and requested a copy of Netgalley. I'm glad that I did, this book is suck a great read and I loved it. It is well written and easy to follow. The characters are very likable and real.
The story keeps you guessing and keeps on the edge of your seat. I loved every minute of this book and wish I could read the next one right now.
I liked that it eases you into the fantasy part, not just throws you in. You slowly discover more and more just as Solina does. I loved Solina, she was such a lovable and relatable character, and she was strong but still had her flaws. What I really liked that she wanted to be independent and not have to depend on someone to safe her. She wanted to learn how to protect herself even with all those strong males around and not just let them handle it. She seemed to be a quick learner even when she didn't think so at times.
I also enjoyed that we get more than one strong female character in this story without taking away from Solina.
There are some hints at romance and maybe even a triangle. BUT I don't mind it at all. I loved it. Most know, that I'm not a fan of love triangles but here, it didn't bother me. Maybe that was because it was subtle and I, myself could not pick a guy. I kept going back and forward between the two.
I did enjoy both Val and Thorin, both had their good and bad sides and I think they balance each other out. Like I said I still have not picked my favorite yet.
We also get some humor and that was also a plus.
The end OH. MY. GOD. All I wanted is the next book, I need to know what will happens next.
Overall, this was a great first book of a new series and I can't wait to see it continue, I have high hope for the next book or books.
I rate it at 4 ½★

Wow! When a review starts off with that three letter word you know it was a good book! I love a good Urban Fantasy story and Midnight Burning is so full of twists, turns, and surprises that it was difficult to put down. I absolutely love when a book sucks me like that and doesn’t let go. Full of mythology and magic, Solina’s quiet life as a baker in a small town is changed forever when she had a nightmare/vision of her twin brother’s death. She finds out that there is more to her life than what she thought and she has gifts beyond her wildest dreams. But, as she learns more about herself, she is put into more and more danger every day.

The characters within this story are very well developed and all of them have multiple layers that make each one just as interesting as the last. Even the secondary and background characters have depth. The setting is so vivid and the storyline made sense, even though it was urban fantasy based. My only issue with this story is that it ended too soon and now I want MORE!! I can’t wait to see what else this new Urban Fantasy author comes up – you can bet I’ll be reading it as soon as I can get my hands on it.

I gave it 3 1/2 stars.

Solina Mundy takes off time at her parents’ bakery in North Carolina after her twin brother’s death. She heads to Alaska to work on her brother, Mani’s apartment and find out about his murder. There she meets his co-workers whom seem to know more than they are saying. Only one co-worker, Skyla, who admitted to being interested in Mani, is willing to help Solina discover the truth. But as they dig deeper, Solina finds there is a lot more to some of the people, that his murder was not so simple to explain, and even Norse mythology becomes part of the strangeness. Plus, she discovers she has an ability and if she does not learn to control it, she may find herself killed like her brother.
It started out a like a mystery, with paranormal and Norse mythology thrown in, but became a bit more confusing with more and more characters added into the mix. It does become interesting again toward the end, enough to hook me to see what happens with the next book. Hopefully less of the confusion.

Midnight Burning is Book I of Solina Mundy’s paranormal/fantasy journey into the death of her brother, Mani.

She travels from a small town in North Carolina to Alaska and back again, seeking answers.

I love her new friend, Skylar, and think she will become a big part of Solina’s life. She’s an ex-Marine and backs down from no one.

The characters have distinct personalities and they shine through in the dialogue.

The dialogue is witty and snarky and I love it.

I love covers, especially when they foreshadow the upcoming story and this is a beauty. The eyes draw me in, looking for…

Midnight Burning by Karissa Laurel was not what I was expecting. The paranormal and myths and legends collide. It is sometimes hard to tell if their talents are a gift or a curse.

The story is predictable and there is a triangle. I would recommend the book and I am looking forward to more of Solina’s story in Book II.

YAY!!!

Having read the short prequel, Moonlight Falling, I knew I was already enchanted by some of the characters in this series, and trusted that I was in good hands with Karissa as my storyteller. Not being super knowledgeable about the Norse background, I was delighted to jump in and learn new stuff, but I admit to holding my breath for quite a while before the clues fell together, and the moment Solina’s true identity became clear, I was all in.

I love fiction that reinvents myths. I love powerful female characters who kick butt and take names. I’m frequently not enamored of storybook dudes who play all the usual ‘I’m a shirtless romance hero and you will melt to butter before me’ cards, and here’s the bit that I fell in love with so hard – in Solina’s world, no means no, and that’s the truth even when (or especially when) you’re saying it to a reinvented god. *Insert much whooping and hollering here*

Solina’s best and most awesome relationship is with her best girl friend, Skyla, and that just absolutely rocks. I cannot get enough of the two of them. They’re fun and sharp, smart and strong, and best of all, they’re complex. And therein lies the core of Karissa’s brilliance here. Her characters are real and complex and anything but boilerplate. They defy simplistic convention and they grow and develop in messy and extremely satisfying ways.

I’d say more good stuff, but I need to go start Arctic Dawn right now. brb!

**Joint review with Jen (https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/6...)**

Jen’s thoughts:

I received a copy of this book from Red Adept Publishing, LLC via NG in return for an honest review.

I really liked this book! Norse mythology and suspense enthusiasts, you'll get a real kick out of this book!

let's dive into the plot!

How did I go from a simple girl who works as a baker to being hunted all in a matter of days?
Solina Mundy is as normal as they get. She wakes up, bakes, craves for parent approval and loves her twin brother Mani with all her heart.
He's always been there for her.
He's always protected her.
He's always loved her.
Until the day Solina has a portentous dream of wolves and death,
She is then notified that Mani has died of a horrendously at the claws of animals.
determined to uncover what happened,
Solina goes on a trip to Alaska.
There she meets two men who may have all the answers she craves- Aleksander Thorin and Val Wotan.
The more Solina uncovers, the more trouble nip at her heels until the moment she has become the number one target.
A wolf seeks to devour her life essence.
All the sudden, her life is irrevocably changed to the dawn of Norse Gods and goddesses, Valkyries, grief, bitterness, murders, love and...Powers.
Solina's life was never as it seemed.

This book was really cool.

honestly, i really enjoyed that! It had a part of norse mythology that i didn't know about so imagine my utter excitement when i researched and saw that this author was spot on in her concepts and mythology! Way to go Laurel, I can see you did extensive research in this area and it paid off brilliantly!

The writing was brilliant too, it's what made the entirety of the experience in this book so wonderful. The writing just sucked you into the story, it engaged you and you felt invested too.

Okay, the characters- I really liked them!

Solina-

"Solina either has her hands stuffed in a batch of dough or her nose stuck in a book,

Solina is a great character! I doesn't hurt that she sounds like she could be my twin from her sarcasm to her hobbies!
She definitely has depth and guts, she knows what she has to do and even though she's scared she won't let that stop her from reaching her goal. She is loyal to a fault and she is determined and won't take anyone's crap.

Most of all though, I loved her sarcasm and wit:-

"Birds are portentous of many things," Kalani answered.
"Death," Inyoni said.
"The arrival of a deity," Kalani said.
"(or) the sighting of a tasty horde of gnats," (solina) said.

this is what i kept seeing and burst out laughing-

description

She's a funny character!

the rest of the characters also had depth and many layers! I'm really looking forward to knowing more about them in the next installment.

Okay now Romance.

I would say that there actually isn't much of one. Like no swoon, oh my goodness romance...not yet at least, but it's coming up for sure! this book was the character getting to know the guys which i respect immensely, there was no insta-love in here.

We have two guys Val Wotan and Aleksander Thorin.

I will admit partiality to Thorin...it's not my fault, the viking looking kind of guy (romanticized-version of course) is just darn attractive!

so there is the potential for a romance but not one exactly.

I also wouldn't totally call this a love triangle, it is in a way and it isn't- i know that makes no sense but you'll have to read it to understand.

other than that, that ending! yowzzaaa! must.have.the.next.book!

Stay wonderful!

Solina Mundy thought she was just an ordinary North Carolina baker. But when she goes to Alaska to investigate her brother's murder, she finds out there's much more to her, her brother, and her brother's friends than meets the eye.

Midnight Burning has a good hook: I am always a fan of starting with a dead body. Solina is easy to like and sympathize with, and her attempts to find out more about her brother's death—and how it relates to the terrifying nightmares she's been having about it—provide a natural narrative momentum. Especially because I was reading the book on the way to Alaska, I loved the details of the Alaskan setting, which is an uncommon place to set an urban fantasy. Karissa Laurel not only gets the physical feel of the place but also the social feel, the type of people who would make their home up there. But a couple things kept getting in the way for me. First, Solina finds herself in the presence of Val and Thorin, two alpha males she's irresistibly attracted to. Now, I actually like how Laurel makes Solina's mourning a complex process with complicated emotions, and I really like that Solina explicitly does not put up with their pushy, protective, patriarchal bullshit. But the love triangle eventually wore on me, as it seemed like they were having the same conversations over and over, though the differences between the two men become more and more clear. Yet it was also clear the person Solina should obviously choose was Skyla, the awesome ex-Marine survivalist who is not an asshole. On that note, second: both Val and Thorin are cryptic assholes who refuse to tell Solina anything for like half the fucking book. This is frustrating for both Solina and the reader; I understand that we're being put in her position but that doesn't make it any less annoying. I wanted answers, and I wanted Solina to get me those answers quicker.

I was enjoying the book enough because of the character interaction and hints of mystery, but things really picked up once Solina does start getting some answers about what's going on, and it turns out Laurel has very cleverly picked out the names of her characters. I liked the new spin on the lore she was pulling from, though it was a bit unclear at times how much the various players knew about what was going on. Also various players just started showing up, which was simultaneously cool and jarring. I'm always a fan of juxtaposing the supernatural with the mundane, and Laurel hit that sweet spot for me several times. It was fun to get caught up in this epic battle of good vs. evil, but Solina's main concern was still finding her brother's killer. Or was it understanding who she really is? The main thrust of the narrative gets a bit lost because so many things are going on, and the climax feels abrupt, the denouement leaving many loose ends. I wasn't sure what story I was reading; by the end I think it's Solina's origin story. Which opens up a lot of story potential for future books. But I was hoping for some more resolution and satisfaction in this one.

I liked several elements of Midnight Burning: the characters, the setting, the worldbuilding. I found several elements frustrating. But overall it was a good read about an ordinary young woman who discovers she's extraordinary and reacts in a fairly realistic manner. Solina Mundy is a heroine to root for.

4.5 “Not at all what I expected” Stars!

I just love when a book takes me by surprise, and Midnight Burning certainly did that! I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect when I started the book and this book delivered so much – mystery, suspense, mythology, strong, kick-a$$ women, and of course some sexy alpha men.

The book started a bit slow with background being provided and the characters and some of the lore being built, but once the stage is set things begin to pick up and I was drawn into the story and couldn’t wait to get to the next page to see what would happen and what other information would be revealed. The plot unfolds as Solina investigates her brother’s death, and we learn bits and pieces of information as she begins to uncover what happened and she herself becomes a target. It’s hard to get into specifics without giving spoilers, but the author does a fantastic job of revealing information in just the right doses and at just the right time to keep the reader satisfied yet wanting more.

Solina started off as someone who was very unsure of herself and weak and had me doubting she would find her strength. She has been haunted by the nightmares of her brother’s death and is determined to shed her quiet, reserved nature so she can uncover the truth behind it. I loved watching her gain confidence in herself. She may not have been physically strong, but as her confidence grew I loved watching her stand up for herself. As she learns more about herself, her brother’s friends, and the other people she encounters in her quest for information about her brother’s death, she becomes more committed to learning the truth and making sure she does everything she can to keep herself safe.

Thorin and Val were both such alpha males, and as the truth about both of them is revealed…well, let’s just say alpha male is definitely a good descriptor. They both want to help Solina, but since they are hiding some important truths she finds it hard to trust them. As the truth begins to unfold, it was interesting to really begin to see who they are as they let down some of the pretenses. I really loved watching Thorin develop over the course of the book – as his truths are revealed and some of his vulnerabilities are exposed he became a really great character for me. Where Val started off the likeable character, as more of his true nature is exposed I quickly changed to #TeamThorin!

Skyla was awesome and I loved her commitment to keeping Solina safe. As she begins to unravel some of the mysteries with Solina, she only becomes more committed to helping Solina – definitely someone you would want as a friend! She’s smart, capable, and a former marine – definitely someone you want having your back!

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves not just urban fantasy or even paranormal reads, but anyone who likes mythology, suspense, and mystery will quickly find themselves wrapped up in the world that Karissa Laurel has built. I can’t wait for the next book to find out more about Solina and what happens next!

I went into this thinking it was going to be a werewolf/urban fantasy novel. Because she literally dreams about a wolf eating her brother. And to an extent it was, but there was so much more happening here. And it all related to Norse Mythology. Which was great, love me some Norse Mythology, but at times it seemed a little too forced.

I am not a fan of stories or scenarios where everyone is interconnected and everyone has to be something because it feels a little cheesy and hokey (which is why I stopped watching OuaT) and I think that this one is boardline there. I am a fan of big casts but not if it is just so that you can wink and nudge to everyone in a certain story; at times it sort of felt like that.

I thought the training was a little much and that there was too much of a lull period between the excitement of being with Val and Thorin and the battle scene at the end. I did like that the Valkyrie wanted to teach her instead of just protect her, but I thought they were a little too much at some points. The clearest example for me was when they were saying how Solina basically takes women a step backward because she doesn't know any fighting techniques. Like no, just no.

I am really excited to see where this is going. I love mythology so I am definitely going to pick up the next one. I hope we get to see more of both Thorin and Val too! I also hope that Solina says "I don't need any of these guys" and ends up with Skyla. That would make me love this series.

This book was quite different from what I was expecting but I was pleased overall with the story. I loved the setting. Stories that take place in Alaska are always a draw for me and this one did not disappoint. I was expecting a story about a werewolf pack in Alaska but there was just so much more.

Solina goes to Alaska to find out what happened to her twin brother and to avenge his gruesome death. The police investigation has gone nowhere and everyone, including her parents, wants to put the nasty business of Mani’s demise behind them. Solina is not about to accept that reasoning and becomes quite obnoxious in her quest to find out the truth.

Her brother’s best friend Val tries to protect her but ends up causing more confusion for her as he attempts unsuccessfully to thwart her investigation. As Solina gets closer to discovering the truth, someone tries to kill her and almost succeeds. At this point, the book takes a major turn as other supporting characters turn out to be more than they appear. Yet more characters are introduced who want to destroy Solina and her friends in order to bring the downfall of humanity and usher in a new age. An epic battle looms.

I enjoyed this twisty, convoluted story and loved the way in which it kept getting bigger in scale. I felt the conclusion was too abrupt and disliked the unresolved issues that were left dangling. I am looking forward to reading the next installment in this series.

I received this book through the Juniper Grove Review Library in exchange for an honest review.

Title: Midnight Burning
Author: Karissa Laurel
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Format: Ebook
Pages: 280
Rating: 4.5
Heat: 2

Thoughts: This story was told from Solina's point of view so we know as much as she does, which is nothing, other than her brother seems to have been killed by a wolf. There are so many questions that arise that remain unanswered until close to the end, which leaves you with a cliffhanger. The build-up to that cliffhanger was brilliantly written. Even with all the unanswered questions I felt like I really knew each character, choices they would make and how they would react. Ms. Laurel did an excellent job turning this centuries old myth into a present day possibility.

The characters are awesome, you have the simple Solina, the tomboy Skyla, the brooding Thorin, and the laid back comedian Val. I loved getting to know each and every one of them. Solina is the perfect daughter, doesn't rock the boat in any way but on this journey she starts to overcome her fears and learn to live. Skyla is the perfect friend, she comforts yet doesn't let Solina wallow for too long. Thorin, well he seems to love control but doesn't seem to like to communicate which was a total piss me off. And Val seems to just want to get laid lol. It's more than that but I don't want to give anything away.
