A mournfully phantasmagoric novella. August by Jonathan Lees follows a soldier returning from war after being dishonerably dischargered for something he never did, but is punished for in an act of queer erasure. As he attempts to reconnect with family, various townsfolk, and most importantly his beloved August, he finds things not as they were before he left.
His parents hide from him, townsfolk transmogrify into horrific images, and August lays within the hospital, wrapped in bloodied gauze and horribly burned.
His life as he remembered is blurred, smudged, disorted by time, this novella explores through engaging prose the nature of mourning our past; a deeply relatable and universal sense of loss.

I had the privilege of being an early reader for this book. From the beginning, I loved it. Lees's prose is lyrical, his imagery lush. Heartbreaking and beautiful, August will keep you turning pages to the end.

I’m biased but I sure did love writing and editing it. 😉
