She is forty-two, exceptionally good at what she does, and not remotely interested in starting over.
Cassia Alarian has spent thirty years mastering resonance: the ability to perceive the forces moving through buildings, communities, and people, and to restore harmony when those forces fall out of balance.
She isn't a chosen one discovering her powers. She's already a master of them.
Which makes it particularly inconvenient when a new machine begins accomplishing in hours what has taken her a lifetime to learn.
Worse, the machine works remarkably well.
Only Cassia senses what its perfect results seem to be missing.
Finding an explanation means leaving the certainty of her profession behind and traveling with Tristan Naveran, a forty-seven-year-old builder whose expertise is very different from hers, and whose company gradually becomes far more important than either anticipated.
Their investigation leads toward old structures, contradictory records, and a history of resonance that does not resemble the one Cassia has spent her life studying.
And the more she learns, the more unsettling the question becomes:
What if the machine isn't misunderstanding harmony?
What if everyone else already did?
---
For readers looking for grown-up fantasy about grown-up people: What Harmony Forgot combines a layered resonance-based magic system, a 42-year-old expert heroine, travel and discovery, hidden history, philosophical mystery, and a healthy slow-burn romance between two competent adults who actually like and respect each other.

About the author
Aurelia Tessar
1 book8 followersAurelia Tessar writes adult fantasy and speculative fiction shaped by curiosity, unusual systems, forgotten histories, and the complicated ways people build lives together.
Before turning to fiction, she spent twenty years designing and building things in the real world. Her background in architecture, years of travel, and fascination with the hidden patterns behind music, movement, art, and science now inform the worlds she creates.
Her stories tend toward mature characters, thoughtful relationships, strange questions, and a sense that the world may be more interesting than it first appears.
When she isn’t writing, she can usually be found reading very long fantasy novels, studying something unnecessarily specific, or being supervised by her cat, Oberon.

First of all, thank you so much to the author for allowing me access and trusting me with your wonderful book early! It has been a privilege

This was such a refreshing read. I had read so many enemies to lovers books with 19 year olds making terrible decisions that the genre seemed saturated and frankly a bit samey at times
This is wonderful change. Cassia is 42, she has spent 30 in her professional role when things begin to change for her. She is calm, smart, thoughtful. She's not rash or needlessly headstrong. She has quiet confidence in her abilities and she is written so beautifully, she has beccome one of my favourite fmcs
The mmc is older too and has a career and a life before we meet him. He is a widower and that is interwoven into their story, its not brushed over, its handled so maturely and its so impressive to see grief spoken of so humanly.
The writing is wonderful, its full of delicate poised phrasing and it feels like every single word has been considered before commiting to it. The overall effect is something so soft and gently unfolding, like the author is taking your hand to show you this world, not bombard you with too much of everything. Its quite stunning. This is definitely a slower paced book and it takes its time to unfold all its mysteries to you.
There is a little spice in this book which again is handled beautifully. Its so sensual you really feel the connection between the characters
My only real criticism is at times there is so much careful correcting of language I did find it a little irritating, but not enough for it to bother me. Also the pacing at times felt too slow.
Overall an incredible debut, I would read anything Aurelia writes. If you like cosy slower paced fantasy with mature characters, friends to lovers and thoughtful plot, please read this

Once I grew accustomed to the writing style, language and concept of the novel, I really enjoyed What Harmony Forgot by Aurelia Tessar.
I was drawn into the story by the mystery and intrugue in the nature of the world and its possibilities for advancement for Cassia.
The world creation was exemplary, drawing me into its believable depths with detailed descriptive concepts of life within its confines.
The emotional depth and the characters, felt believable and easy to connect with.
I especially liked the way the story explored memory, relationships and the things we often try to leave behind. There were some lovely, touching moments that stayed with me, although the pacing felt a little slow and the text a little wordy in places.
Overall, I found this an engaging and thoughtful read that kept my curiosity brewing right to the end. I thank the author and Book Sirens for the opportunity to read this eARC and leave this review voluntarily.

I liked the 2 main characters. I feel the book needed more of a clear introduction to the premise of the story. The terms were too opaque when the reader is starting a book. The glossary at the end was needed at the Prologue /beginning to help guide the reader into the key concepts. It took about 100 pages before I was clear on why I want to follow Cassia's journey. Hope this helps. Wishing you success!
