As a huge fan of the Fin Vs History podcast, this was a piece of me.
Taylor’s innovative approach asked the true questions: Who was the greatest dictator? What historical events unite the sexes? Why was Hitler so shouty all the time, and was it because of an unsuccessful weaning off of breast milk?
Such questions and more were given thorough consideration, and it was refreshing to know that history had a new and exciting voice unbound by the politically correct historians and “revisionists” of today.
On a serious note, as there must be at least one in this review, it’s a consistently funny piece of satire that I thoroughly recommend. I read it via audiobook and that was EXCELLENT, basically a 7hr stand-up act.
Big of fun with Nazi obsessed Partridge. The historian character doesn’t really offer enough to be unique from what the podcast covers, but it’s still good fun.
Would I have enjoyed it more had I not heard the pod? We can’t know.
yeah just a written version of the pod really good fun as soon as i saw Polynesian poontang in like page 6 (or 7) i was hooked. it’s like crack to a 30 something yw like myself rorkes drift ughhh ww2 oooohhh romans ughhhhhh fuggggggg.
possibly the best history book ever written we just can’t know
The release of this book was my equivalent of GTA 6 and it did not disappoint.
My girlfriend, making her way through a smut series, said to me “there’s no way you can be laughing that much about a history book” - it’s too bad she’s not allowed to read it
While this is sold to people who are fans of Fin Vs History, it’s somewhat ruined if you’ve listened to the series as it covers almost exactly the same ground, just in a more formalised way. While Taylor’s musings on history are still entertaining, this just feels like an excuse for him to talk about the Second World War (a topic that hasn’t been fully covered in the podcast), something he talks about in mild detail without really adding that much in the way of jokes. Given too that the war is exceptionally well covered outside of this book, it feels all the more questionable as to what purpose this book serves. I definitely enjoyed the ride, but I found myself constantly saying “oh yeah I remember that episode” rather than taking in any new information or even laughing at new jokes that hadn’t already been heard alongside Horatio Gould.
Didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did. Turns out I might actually have liked History at school if every book had been written like this.
Nothing like learning about geopolitics thought references to Russia as “resting bitch face country” and Saddam Hussein being crowned the funniest dictator due to his fashion sense AH (After Hitler) 😂
His references about British Dads was the cherry on top though. Enjoyable read 👏👏
About half the book is recycled jokes from the podcast, while still funny they feel a bit more forced then the first telling, although I suppose the whole podcast now has a slightly more rigid formula, with a focus on being “edgy” rather than covering any history and the more natural comedy.
Just a very average book trying too hard to be edgy, the long road to Ricky Gervais-esque slop.
I have long awaited a tome such as this. Condensed to only the important figures of history (white men, generally rich, with one or two povvos who got in because of meritocracy), this is a refreshingly niche and specialised book. Highly recommended by me for its excellent scholarly research and backing.
Any fan of Fin’s podcast will thoroughly enjoy this. As such, I did.
There are, at times, some jokes that wear a little thin (the constant “haha Spanish people like sleeping” stuff is one for me) but overall its clear how passionate about history he is and it shows.
An unprovoked attack on historical academia. A rape of history, inflicting untold intellectual damage on readers and innocent bystanders alike, it makes Gaddafi’s The Green Book read like a Socratic treatise. Degenerate filth, to be enjoyed by filthy degenerates. Five stars.
Found it abit of a struggle after being a member of the Vietmong since day one. Felt like I was reading over the podcast content. My own fault for being a greedy pig and feasting on the pod so much
