Imperial #3

Jacinda's Challenge

Rate this book
Jotham is the King of the House of Protection. He was the youngest male ever to assume the position because of the sudden death of his father in Jotham’s twentieth cycle. In the last forty cycles, he married his life mate, Lata, and lost her in a transport accident. He had two sons and lost one due to his son’s own treachery. Now his first son, Barek, is interested in a woman and Jotham is going to find out everything about her he can.
Jacinda is from the House of Healing. She is the widow of an Assemblyman for the House of Protection. Stephan was her life mate even though he was twenty cycles older than her. His sudden death devastated her and if it weren’t for her three children, she isn’t sure she would have survived. In the years that have followed his death, she has learned to live with her loss and more importantly has learned that life can still be good. She has healed.
When Jotham summons Jacinda to the Palace, his only intent is for her to help him gather information on Amina, Jacinda’s great-niece. That plan goes out the window when Jacinda refuses. She challenges not only his right to interfere in Barek’s life, but questions how he's lived his own since Lata’s death.
Two strong personalities come together after having loved and suffered the loss of that loved one. Can they find enough common ground and courage to chance a new love? Or are they destined to live the rest of their lives alone?

No estuvieron mal.

El final fue muy abrupto, no sé qué sucedió con esta serie, me encantó la serie Tornian, pero está quedó plana.

I really like this story of both Jacinda and Jotham finding love with each other after they have lost their mates. It seems to be running parallel to a few other romances which really weren't detailed here, but looks like they may have their own books such as Amina & Barek and Stephanie & Nicholas (Captain of Jotham's royal guard). I can't wait for those stories.

This book really just seemed to have an abrupt ending. I expected a little more and then I turned the page and that was it. I guess it is because you can tell that there will be more coming, but I didn't think it was wrapped up very well.

I really love Eidems writing style. This book was no exception. The plot and character development were flawless. I really enjoyed the hero and heroine being older in age, and having a second chance at love. Also, I like how respectful and loving they each were pertaining to their deceased spouses. I will definitely check out anything else this writer publishes.

I enjoyed this as much as the second book. The stories in this series are long but flow well and keep my interest without being angsty.
I don't think it would work well as a stand-a-lone though.

It's much the same as the first 2 stories;
Powerful man who isn't looking for love falls head over heels for special snowflake woman. A few brief misunderstandings, some build up of side love story for next book, some special snowflake action, and a crazed lunatic attacks at the end.

Some background is given about Dadrian's mother, but we never meet the woman. I was kinda hoping we would. Oh well. Both Jotham and Jacinda were widowed from the deaths of their lifemates. Jotham's died at least 30 years ago, and Jacinda's died about a decade ago. But she dealt with the loss better than Jotham did. Still, I never felt that Jacinda was second best. In fact the story reads more like Jotham and Jacinda are lifemates as well.

I quite enjoyed that the couple were older. Jacinda is actually a year older than Jotham. She is a grandmother and her eldest child is almost 40. It's never said, but I would think she is about 65.
However, it certainly doesn't come across as a human 65, but more like 40ish. I was disappointed that the author kept undermining their ages. Why have a romance with an older couple if they aren't going to actually BE older???
The way the author talked about the differences between the Humans and Aliens, it was like the only difference was the size. BUT, if the Carinians age so much slower you would think there would be a noticeable difference in Cindy's (the only full human) age comparatively.
Anyways, it just kept me rolling my eyes from time to time.

I listened to the audio and I have the same complaints as the first two books as three of the readers are the same. Too many stupid background foley sounds added. Jennifer Gill pretty much sucks as a reader.
Safety is fine.

I love M.K. Eidem ability to conjure up another universe, full of aliens or human looking aliens with interesting religion and culture but one thing is always the same...Politics and love! I'm a huge fan of her Tornians and Kaliszians series but I not the Imperial series though, except Jacinda's Challenge. It's the best in the Imperial trilogy.

One of the reasons I didn't like this series is because the plot is full of tedious everyday details (at least in the first book) and the aliens were too human. Just take a look at the book cover and there you have it. They are physically human but culturally alien. There is also a magical/fantasy element wrapped up in the religion and culture of this alien society and I really enjoyed that aspect.

There were a few issues in the book like how Jacinda, the heroine, was practically perfect in every way and that was just a bit much for me. I like my heroine with a little imperfection, something to help her grow and overcome obstacles. The hero was occasionally overbearing and rude. Not my favourite couple in M.K. Eidem book world but they were an older couple with life experience, both previously married (and widowed) with grown kids before getting together and I liked that. I don't usually see that in romance books (especially in alien romance) and I appreciated it.

This is the third book in The Imperial Series by MK Eidem, and if I could post 10 stars I would. Loving the characters and world created in Cassandra's Challenge And Victoria's Challenge this book is not only my favorite of the series but one of my top favs period, and a definite reread. Finally a fantastic exciting story whose central characters are going thru a reawakening of their emotions and ability to feel love again. Jacinda and King Jotham are sexy, confident, powerful exciting characters whose story is riveting.
Having known each other since their days at the Academy, Jacinda and Jotham's lives have always been intertwined. Jacinda was not only a good friend of Jotham's late wife but her husband who passed several years ago, was an important assemblyman for the House of Protection.
Though it takes some time for them to realize they having growing feelings for each other, and with many challenges to overcome, they find that love the second time around can be just as powerful and amazing.

Many of the characters from the first two books are woven into the story as well as several new ones, including Jacinda's children. These characters and the world they live in are very believable. This is a scify with characters and a world we can relate to and thru the authors talent for writing detailed multilayered stories it's a book you can really sink your mental teeth in. A truly unique story very different than the previous books, never predictable, delighting in every twist and turn.
Love loved having main characters I could relate to that are special, sexy gorgeous exciting, confident (and not twenty year olds) , emotional, sensitive, and loyal. The book was excellently paced I could not put it down once started, didn't want it to end.
A riveting beautiful love story with awesome characters in a phenomenal world that is really a must read whether you are a scify fan or not. Can't wait for the next one.

It was nice to see Jotham finally move on from his late queen and start to live again.
Jacinda was a perfect match for him. It's not often you see a romance between older people (50-60s) so that was refreshing.

This book is the third book in The Imperial Series by MK Eidem, and it is GREAT. The characters and world created in the first books is built up here. Giving us a glimpse into a world so much like our own. Where children don't really know their parents true feelings about some things because they see them through the eyes of a child. The take away from this story is that no one is perfect and they history of how you were raised should never control what you become. This is a fantastic, heart touching story whose central characters are going thru a reawakening of their emotions and ability to feel love again. Jacinda and King Jotham are sexy, confident, powerful exciting characters whose story is riveting.
What is so wonderful is the connection between Jotham, Will (Cassandra's Challenge), Jacinda and her late husband. Jotham, Will and Jacinda had gone to the Academy together and their lives continued to connect when Jacinda, from the House of Healing marries a man from the House of Protection who was one of the assembly. When Jotham and Jacinda reconnect 10 years after her husbands death the sparks fly. At first angry sparks and then sparks of attraction and they find that love the second time around can be just as powerful, exciting and amazing as that first love.

This story gives you a glimpse into the lives of the characters from the first two books and what their lives are like. They are all woven into the story with a masterful hand that makes their world totally believable and leaves you knowing that most of these people could be your friend.
Loved having main characters be a little older but still special, sexy, gorgeous, exciting, confident, emotional, sensitive, and loyal. I cannot wait for the next installment in the lives of these characters.

I have to discuss this book in two parts 0 - 90% and then the ending.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILERS ***

0 - 90%
I enjoyed this. I liked that the story was about a more mature couple who were confident and established in themselves. I liked that despite that, they were both still unsure and tentative about a new relationship. I liked that they made mistakes. I thought this read really well.

I liked Jacinda but disliked how EVERYONE had a story about her that made her somewhat Mary-Sue-ish. Given her years as a respected and powerful politicians wife and her personality - the actions described in all these stories are entirely plausible. It's just that EVERYONE had one about how wonderful she was. I got the hint, I didn't need to be bashed with it.

I didn't like Cassandra in this story and felt her protectiveness came across as being bitch only. I think this could have been demonstrated better.

The Ending
What ending! Whilst this story isn't a cliff hanger about the relationship it is regarding the rest. We're left hanging about the corruption investigation, Adelaide and her interrogation and will it reveal what she knows about how Dadrian came to be (and how dense was Jotham about that?), Jacinda's daughter and her recovery (although that may be a future story). There was a lot going on and I felt like we got cut off in the middle of it.

Given that Cassandra's story is an epic that just keeps going until you have a complete resolution - why doesn't this one? Was there a deadline the author needed to meet?

So I enjoyed the story until the ending.

Jacinda is a widow of an Assemblyman from the House of Protection. She has lived a quiet life since the death of her husband. When she receives a summons from King Jotham she is surprised, then furious when she realizes the reason behind it. After that meeting circumstances keep pushing them together and make them realize that there is more between them than just a King and a subject.

I enjoyed seeing Jotham find love again. He lost his Life Mate, Lata, too early and has spent years alone raising Barek. Seeing him open his heart again after so long was perfect. Jacinda teaches him how to live again. She sees him as a man, not a king. Jacinda was a smart, beautiful, and determined woman. She wasn’t going to watch another man she loved work himself to death. She wasn’t afraid to stand up to Jotham and tell him when he was wrong or when he needed to back down.

The ending was a cliffhanger, not for Jotham and Jacinda’s relationship, but for the corruption investigation going on. So it seemed a bit abrupt but I felt it just pushed me to want to read the next book as soon as possible.

I really enjoyed this book. I would have given it 5 stars, but I felt like the relationship was a bit rushed and I didn't get some resolutions I was hoping for.

Also, there is no way the guy on the cover is the same age as the H!

first of all the sex scenes in this are hilarious:
"Come!" he ordered. "I command it!" And she did.
the way i cried laughing and this happened in almost every sex scene?? jacinda was really into obeying her sovereign i guess??

i laughed a bit too hard about this one as well:
"Something is going on," she told him sitting down in a huff.
"Adelaide, you always think something is going on," Elliott told her dismissively.
"Because something always is!" she fired back.
i was living for adelaide but she was done so dirty, she definitely had the potential to be a great villain tbh.

although i enjoyed reading this, it felt a little bit too long, there were many scenes between characters discussing point by point the details of a event that just happened in the previous chapter instead of it being summarized. i just don't think jotham telling his friend during a call what just happened between him and jacinda accompanied by replies such as "why?" or "what?!?" to be really entertaining or necessary.

then there is this cover which is hilarious to me as well because the couple is supposed to be in their late 50s/early 60s. there's constant talk about how beautiful and elegant jacinda still is for her age and that irked me, i don't know how many times she was complimented on or flirted jokingly with for her reply to be "you're good for my ego!" and that brings me to another aspect that slightly irked me as well: jacinda is just too perfect, she's a paragon of virtue, she does nothing wrong, she is a saint that touched the lives of everyone around her with a good deed. even the secretary of the king had a "remember when jacinda saved my family" moment stg, it was tiring.

now about the weak worldbuilding: i enjoy reading romances for the couple and this didn't bother me much but i am presuming that the world and its history are better explained in previous books because i was very confused with the politics in this. the name-dropping of previous main characters didn't help either and went right over my head. also for a 2015 published book, this reads as heavily gendered (specially when they're talking about their own children and friend's children, honestly it was borderline disgusting in some passages for me) and very liberal at the same time – but i guess that one is on me expecting to read something more progressive in a book about monarchs.

This book was like reading badly-edited fanfic of space opera novels I'd never gotten around to reading. It has that strangely addictive quality some fanfiction has, where the author cares so aggressively about these characters that the reader cares, too. That said, the editing was really terrible - the prologue slips between past and present tense, there are a lot of grammatical errors, and for a book that places so much emphasis on ages ("cycles" rather than "years" - there are a lot of space-isms which felt awkward and unnecessary) those seemed to have difficulty staying consistent. There is a lot of telling rather than showing and a ton of very complex backstory, which luckily is gone over so comprehensively that I'm left a little confused as to whether there actually were prior novels or this is all just backstory. (ETA: Okay, looks like this is the third of a series.)

Okay, on to actual plot: the heroine, who is alas too perfect for words (everyone loves her, and I do mean everyone), is a sixty-something widow, vaguely acquainted with the also-widowed king, who is one year ("cycle") her junior. The king is incredibly depressed over some complex backstory stuff, while the heroine is a well-adjusted mother of three. They randomly run into each other, the heroine starts fixing all the problems in the king's life with such excellent advice as "maybe don't drink caffeine at 11 PM if you want to get to sleep tonight," and they fall wildly in love and have lots of explicit sex. There are other backstory reasons why Their Love Is Going To Be Difficult, but despite the fact that both of them had previous "life mates" with whom they had loving and fulfilling relationships, they decide that they love each other and are willing to try to make it work.

The book itself had that weirdly compelling quality which is hard to explain: the editing was bad, the writing was so-so, and the plot was silly, but everyone was pretty pleasant and understandable and it was an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. I really wish that someone had taken this book, edited it fiercely, and had some long conversations with the author about where she was going and what she wanted to get at. The result could have been something really good. As it was, this was readable but very long and pretty much devoid of tension. I discovered that I was totally happy to spend a lot of time reading Pleasant Sixty-Somethings Find Love - In Space! but it's not really a headline-grabber, you know?

Jotham, King of the House of Protection lost his life mate young and has mourned her ever since, unable to let go of the woman he loves but any able to bear hearing her name. But, with the unexpected entrance of Jacinda, a widow of one of his most respected Assemblyman, he must either learn to open his heart again or lose a second chance at happiness.

I really wanted to like this. It has sexy aliens in it! And this book contains a King of sexy aliens. Sadly, I vacillated from feeling irritated at everyone to being bored, which is exactly how I felt when I read the second book in the series Victoria’s Challenge.

Another problem I had, that was also similar to the issues I had with Victoria’s Challenge was the heroine. She was too perfect. Too together. Everyone loved her, she didn’t seem to have any foibles, make any mistakes, full of wise words and understanding. I can’t take anyone that disgustingly nice, it just feels unrealistic and I couldn’t relate to her at all. Of course, I’m not sure if that just says bad things about me, or about this book…

I don’t know if I want to give up on this series or not, as despite everything, I still feel slightly invested in the characters and want to know what happens with them, perfection and all. So, although I wouldn’t really recommend this series…it probably won’t stop me from continuing to read it.

I have to admit that this is a book that I go to when I just need to decompress from heavy and dark romances. It is a sweet story and the narrator that narrates King Jotham is great. He takes his narration very seriously and I love it. The way that it ends always catches me off guard because it is just so abrupt. There are great scenes within this story and it flows very well with the rest of the books in the series. I am waiting for the upcoming books and it is getting harder and harder not to go insane. I want to know what happened to Stephanie and to Jotham's captain of the King's guard? I know that they are lifemates.

To explain: the writing is not the best, and the plot is very similar to the previous books, there is limited action, and moderate angst.

But...

This may be the best tale of two older people finding love again that I've ever read. They deal with their confused families, convoluted work politics, and cultural norms, all while remaining true to themselves and their growing relationship.

Originally read this in 2017!

loved this book not least because the mcs are middle aged, have been previously married to their life partners and whom they loved deeply. It shows that love is eternal and not selfish.

I think this is my favourite book of the series do far, I actually had tears at one point!!

I don't normally like soppy romance, I prefer edgy, angsty n dark, but this was utterly enthralling!!

I couldn't put this book down, Absolutely loved the plot.

World building and sci elects were very humanised, but ignore it, so what if most of what they have on their planet is similar to ours even words for things like piano. Just ignore that and enjoy the beautiful story.

Note to author- my only teeny tiny moan:

Sigh its 'couldn't care less' ffs. Why do so many people get this wrong. If you say I could care less you are literally saying the opposite of what you intended ergo that you do care. I find this really annoying, its such poor English ! grrrrr

I wanted to give it more stars.... I really did! I like these books quite a bit.... but I felt like I was ripped off a little with the end. I really thought that part of it hadn't downloaded or something because it just cut off! No rounding off of the story or anything! I get that there may have been the idea of future books, but it has been 2 years since this one came out.... I really hope there are more coming, but I am not holding my breath. That disappointment is why I only gave it 3 stars.... even though the first part of the book was really worth more like 4.5 stars

I felt the whole story was very slow. I did enjoy Jacinda and Jotham being older, but continually referring back to the deceased life mate and talking to them in dreams, etc... took away from the relationship between J&J. So, if it's true, and when the story mentions being with your deceased ancestors/life mates on the other side, do you have to pick between the old love and the new love? And WTH did the tattoo mean on Jacinda anyway? We talk about it, it fills in, but never any mention to why it's important or what it means, etc... Anyway, 3 stars for all I've mentioned.

Little to lengthy for a weak story

Love all of these books with there great houses, Kings and Queens, plots, and deep love between the couples. William and Cassandra a 10. Then Grim, a 10. Victoria and Lucas a 5 . Now this one Jacinda and Jotham a 2 , but how can u feel right about yourself in taking my money for a lot and lots of just words, slow forever, no real story just a Little at the end. Do u read your own book before u send it in for publication?

This is a great book. It had a lot of passion between Jotham and Jacinda but it also continues the story lines brought forth by the previous two books. You don't have to read them, per sey, as you get the story right from the start about the previous books. Lots of intrigue, mostly due to his being the King of the House of Protection. A little slow to begin with but smoothed out into a great story. Highly recommend.

I love this series!!

This book has strong, vibrant characters along with a wonderful story line. I love this entire series, starting with Cassandra's Challenge, then Victoria's Challenge and now this one. Each book has the most outstanding characters and story lines, as stand aliens and as a series. I honestly can't wait for the next book,; will it be about Barack or maybe Stephanie. Guess I'll just have to wait and see.

So nice to have an older couple as the main characters and I was pleased to see Jotham get his own story. Didn't like the way it started as it just didn't seem like the person we had met in the previous books. However, as the book unfolded, I realized why he reacted like he did. The continuation of the background plot is good and I can't wait to see which book will be next in the series, one about is son or one about her daughter, or even one about another character we have met.

Would recommend this book to 18+.
Hope their is something exciting for the other characters from before and now. Example would be the the children’s of the royal family, also whom Cassandra cares about.

After the other series, this one took a bit to get into. There’s a lot more world building and political jargon going on, not to mention both Jacinda ant Jotham has previous life mates. It took a long time for the romance to flourish. But when it did it really took off.
