Reporter Lara is finding the limits of small-town journalism grating. After all, life in Eagle Ridge is fairly low-key and personal, not exactly the stuff of Pulitzer Prizes.
It doesn’t help that her jerk boss seems determined to make her life a living hell, and he refuses to let her check into strange deliveries being made to a local Atlantean-worshipping cult, the Azilians.
Super-soldier hybrid Magnus and his people are tasting true freedom for the first time. Still on the run from the ruthless Horatius Group, they’ve settled in the Pacific Northwest, hoping for a fresh start, including using the cover of the nearby Azilians.
When Lara’s investigation brings her face-to-face with the stunning Magnus, they find themselves drawn to each other, but both quickly realize something is happening in the woods around the hybrids’ new compound that may threaten not only the hybrids, but everyone in town.
Madison currently lives with her husband and two children in the Valley of the Sun. Phoenix, Arizona. After leaving the frozen tundra of the north, Madison was more surprised than anyone with how much she has enjoyed living in the desert. Seeing as she had stated on more than one occasion how much she hated the heat, it was an odd move. But it seemed her hatred for sub-zero temps and ice, or really the things that ice could do, won out in the end. When she’s not writing, she’s enjoying time with her family. Madison and her family frequent festivals in the area, as well as local cultural events, and spend time with family in the area. In the summer she is most likely to be found in the pool with the family and in the winter by the fireplace. Since both her children are autistic, days can be a little chaotic but with her husband beside her, there’s nothing she can’t handle. Luckily he is also an author and able to share in all the activities (and chores) special needs kids require. When I stumbled across a book called Nero I thought "Wow, that blurb sounds like it would be totally my thing" - I noticed it was not the first in a series so I went back to check which book would be the first- to find Magnus. I went to read magnus to bin in line ... JUST to find out that it actually totally is NOT the first book but that there are like a dozend books before that and this is only a series on the side of another series. Then I found different numbering around the web as where to start and this really got on my nerves. Why does this have to so complicated ?
This book could have been really great but there was far to much of background missing which is probably located in the original series. And with its length it was more a novella than a novel . I really tried to keep an open mind and accept things for what they were having read similar series styles before but this is really a tough nut to crack and I felt like i was missing not bits and pieces but basically the whole concept at times. Me giving still 3.5 stars means that this original concept could be really good. Because if I would only judge based on this one novel it would be a 2 star read because it annoyed me a lot that I went back to the start of a series only to find out it wasn't really the start.
3 & 1/2 stars. I think the other series, or at least a big part of that series (Luna Lodge) needs to be read first (the world building for this as a separate series is not so good). That and the rushed ending, brings the star rating down. I only read the first book from that series (“Sol”, which I really enjoyed), but I felt lost in this book, like I missed something in previous books. This flowed good, the main characters (Magnus & Lara) are likable, but the end felt rushed & it left the plot of the story about the Azillians in a cliff-hanger, though the main couple are bonded/happy & together. I think if a series splits & starts a new series (as this did), there needs to be some more backup world building & a tiny bit of summary mixed in from the first series, to help a new to the series reader make sense of the stories. This book left me NOT wanting to pursue purchasing the others in this branch of the series because I did feel too lost, & can’t afford to purchase the 13 (of the 14) remaining books in the original series just to continue this one.
******these may be Spoilers********* Some of the mysteries that must have been in the previous series as this is labeled as book 1 in this series= Lem & Jenna need a back story to make sense to me, since he seems to be this hybrid group’s leader. They are a bonded couple, but no back story to them -to place with them. How did he become the leader, what’s hid bonding story to Jenna... There’s some tid bits thrown in but make no sense since I don’t known what’s being referenced (such as Annie Oakley shooting abilities, etc). There’s no book titled for him in the previous series either. There’s a mention that he’s got more abilities than the rest of the hybrids in this hunter group, but no more details. How did this group split from the Luna Lodge group? Why are the Luna Lodge group considered a tracker (I think that’s what it was called) & this group considered hunters. There’s a story there, but for me -who hasn’t read the entire previous series, I have no clue.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The heroine was TSTL, I just think she was all ‘I wanna be a reporter’ and hated that in A SMALL TOWN she didn’t have any mysteries and juicy content (but still never left the town even when her parents did) but when they came she was horrified and then when everyone was like woah dangerous be careful she was like nah it’s not I’m safe what’s the worst that could happen, then was shocked when bad stuff happened lol.
I’ll be continuing the series, but the heroine completely ruined this one for me.
Lara's a small town reporter chasing her big story.
Magnus is part of a group of hybrids happy to be living a quiet life in a small town... nothing to see here... unfortunately he and his people are next door to Lara's big story.
This done in one quick read starts us on a story arc with Remus (who we met in the main Luna Lodge series) and the group of hybrids he rescued/freed.
I like books with more action and no cliffhangers. This books has very little action and a lot of cliffhangers. It's good for the series but sucks for people like me that like a finished ending.
This is my first book by Madison Stevens, and it won't be my last. The world is interesting and I find the characters good and solid. For me a good start to the series.... I'm off to read more.
Oh my! Just finished reading this book in the next group from Luna Lodge. It’s an exciting world and really looking forward to the next book in this series.
QUITE THE SERIES SO FAR...EACH BOOK KEEPS YOU GOING TO TH NEXT!
I have never read any work by Author, Madison Stevens and did not receive anything for this book review.
This series starts out really good and hooked me right away. The characters were well formed and developed quickly. Each "Hybrid" is unique but, still just like men all over the world. I fell in love with each of these "wounded warriors" and their strong. Women.
The books are well written and the Author's writing style was easy to read. Author, Madison Stevens does a great job combining action, intrigue, mystery, adventure, and romance in each story. It is best to read the series in order to get the most enjoyment from the story. I think the erotica was a little much and that is why the 4 stars. Much of it was redundant and unnecessary.
Overall, this series is wonderful and I will continue to read and review her work. I am very happy to recommend "Luna Lodge: Hunters of Atlas" for all readers of sci-fi paranormal romance to all mature readers.
We met the other group of hybrids in the Luna Lodge series. This group is very fresh from captivity and not everyone is settled. Rem is treading a very fine line as their leader and Magnus is his enforcer. Lara is a reporter, who hates her job and finds herself investigating a cult and falling for a hybrid. The romance is well done, as is the set up for this series.
I have loved every one of these books and they keep getting better and better. I really like Lara and Magnus is wonderful too. This book was a quick read and ended abruptly :( I am ready for the next book.
Maybe I missed the part that said this is so novella and not a full length book? Too me, it needed more time to build the characters so I can care about them.
I have liked Magnus since we first met him. I washout g for more about him and Lara but it was good. I hope Marcus turns his attitude around. Can't wait for Nero!!!!
3.5 Stars. Much better again:) Some of these books are hit and miss with me depending on the couple and plot. This was one of my more favorite couples spinning off.
