Sean Chiller is a cop on vacation with his wife and three-year-old daughter when they become trapped in a strange little town by a killer storm.
They discover the colony is the center of a genetics experiment gone horribly wrong; a major corporate research center for GMO foods where the local residents are the guinea pigs, mutating into rampaging monsters, slaves to the town's sociopathic physician, the Mayor, and the county Sheriff.
With the help of one eccentric local they plan a bold escape the townies will do anything to stop. Anything.
If you have any concerns about the dangers posed by genetically modified food, this novel should keep you up at night. Based on the results of actual studies, Theo Cage weaves a terrifying prophecy of a possible genetic apocalypse.
Chilling! And that's not just down to the wintry landscape!
Berzerker (a Norwegian word for crazy person ) is a small town which is being used as a research centre for GMO foods, with young local boys as guinea pigs. The research goes horribly wrong, as Sean Chiller of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is about to discover to his cost. Sean and his wife and young daughter stumble upon this place accidentally during a blizzard and then become trapped in this isolated, snowbound location. With their daughter dangerously ill, they have to resort to desperate measures to secure their freedom.
This was really well written ( as was Buzzworm, also by Theo Cage), nightmarish, nail biting stuff, and a smart conclusion. Theo Cage certainly knows how to hook the reader in! Great stuff.

A fitting name for a town gone crazy.
Sean Chiller, along with his wife Tracy and daughter Ashley are heading to a hospital in search of a treatment that may extend Ashley life. Ashley has Cyctic Fibrosis and the outlook is not good. Their travels are being hindered by an intense snow storm, and a low gas tank that will bring them into a town named Berzerker.
A series of events lead them into a nightmare. A small town where everyone knows each other. The people are rude and stand offish. There appears no one between childhood and 30 years old live there. The church basement serves their meals as a community. Just a strange place to be in. While staying in a local hotel until their unbroken car is repaired Sean and Tracy feel if they just stay until dawn and leave as early as possible they will be just fine…but the town and people have other plans for them.
A fantastic and believable story. Yes a little bit sci-fi. How are we to know what would happen if your life was manipulated by a company with sights on scientific experimentation. You have to live by their rules or you will be eliminated.
I had to settle in for the ride on this one. Theo Cage has a way of weaving a tale that’s difficult to put down. The possibilities are endless. I just have a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that a town is owned by the private sector, willing to do what they do for the love of money, and think they can somehow survive. By private I mean owned by a governmental agency, politicians, of a scientific type of experimentation for the discovery of new breed, trend, medication, or anything else you can think of. Like most people I am frustrated that this can go unchecked. This could really happen, or is currently happening now. As far as GMO testing goes, we already know that to be fact. No one knows the long term effects of controlling the food supply. Yet, we haven’t stopped eating yet. I am getting a little off point here to made a point.
If your into unknown possibilities this is a book for you. High action will take into the world of drugs, military involvement, civilian population as test subjects, secrets, money and endless thought provoking ideas. A well thought out plot of intrigue.

I was delighted to be offered an advance review copy of BERZERKER, both because I've been a fan of author Theo Cage for some time, but also because I've long been fascinated with the concept of berserkers (from historical reading and from the fiction of Fred Saberhagen). I had also been aware of diseases caused by grains but I had never considered the possibility of combining these two possibilities. Fortunately, Theo Cage has, and the result is BERZERKER, a terrifying blend of science and folk lore into a potential reality that is all too possible.
Berzerker by Theo Cage I received a free kindle copy of Berzerker by Theo Cage in an LibraryThing promotion in exchange fair review.I gave this intense book five stars. While some of it seemed far-fetched, the technology exists now. This was a fast-paced, suspense-filled horrifying book. Many of the characters were so well drawn they were easy to dislike. Dr. Spooner heads that list.Sean Chiller, a Corporal with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Winnepeg & his wife Tracy have a daughter named Ashley who had a rare genetic disease, a variation of Cystic Fibrosis. They hoped that a partial cure was possible based on genetic therapy. They're driving with hope to Fargo, North Dakota in a snow storm to an appointment at the Gene Therapy Clinic.A town named Berzerker was the first one they came to. They finally found an open diner. He went in & came back out empty handed."'They wouldn't serve you coffee?”“'I'm not sure why. It could be the law, or the fact that I'm black, or my non-regulation footwear. Or all three of the above.'”She flushed with anger. Where they lived it was a non-issue that she was white. When they traveled it was different.Their car wouldn't start & they had to stay at a decrepit hotel that was in sad repair. The next morning, anxious to get started, Sean went to find out about his vehicle. Here are some quotes that caught my attention.Sean stood at the chipped service counter inside the gas station, receiving bad news from a gangly Swede with lube oil on his chin. Sean had walked over with his family, anxious to continue on to Fargo. Then he learned there was another problem with the SUV.“'How long will it take to clean the injectors?'” Sean asked. The mechanic looked uncertain, his eyes darting around like bluebottle flies looking for a place to land.“'Won't be able to get to it until later today or tomorrow at the earliest.'”"Berzerker was a kept village with an electronic moat as impenetrable as technology would allow. Essential in the social media saturated world of the twenty-first century.""The General actually smiled for two of them, using muscles it looked like he hadn't used in decades."
I loved this book. The title caught my attention first - I mean how could I resist checking it out? This was a page turning, fast paced horror story. This book had a little bit of everything: good characters, greed, corporate/army collusion, science experiments on young human males. What more could it cover?
The Chiller family was on their way to Fargo, ND for an appointment with a genetic company in the hopes that they would have a treatment for their young daughter who has Cystic Fibrosis. This is winter in North Dakota and their is a severe winter storm with extensive snow fall. Ok, this might be a little cliche but they are below empty and need to get gas in order to continue to Fargo. While reading I didn't even notice this because it just worked into how the family finds themselves in a town called Berzerker.
Bezerker is a strange town that just doesn't feel right. It is dark and power is out except for a few places. Everything is closed down and there are no people out. The diner that is open won't even sell them coffee. Sean is a cop and he is having all types of bad vibes but what can they do till morning when the gas station opens. They spend the night in a dusty hotel room that hasn't been used in years. Then the screaming and howling begins and lasts into the wee hours of the morning.
Things go from bad to worse when they can't get out of Berzerker. The town has a unique history dating back to its origins which the family learns about. Their daughter's daily antibiotic injection is stolen out of their SUV. She depends on this to live so they go to the local doctor who is a bona fide nut job. Needless to say it becomes a race to get out of Berzerker and get their daughter to a hospital. Unfortunately, Sean gets himself included in the nightmare that is Berzerker.
I found this to be a great read and recommend it to all readers who like horror, thrillers, mysteries or science fiction.
I received this book free from the author in exchange for a review. For more information about Theo Cage check out http://theocage.com/ I also recommend his novel On the Black
Theo Cage has done it again. He has written a book so intense and suspenseful, that I could not put the book down. This book is a little different from his others, but equally as incredible . His writing ability becomes stronger and more detailed after each book. I don't like to give to much away about the book, but just enough to intice readers.
Sean and Tracy are driving in a terrible snow storm with their daughter Ashley. They have a very important doctor appointment they must keep. Their daughter suffers from Cystic Fibrosis and they are hopeful that she will be accepted into an experimental treatment. As they are traveling, they take a wrong turn and find themselves in a town called Bezerker. That is the beginning of a terror filled adventure for this family. The town is creepy , the people in the town are beyond weird and it has an overall feel of the twilight zone. The car won't start, they run out of gas and now they feel trapped in a town that you only see in nightmares.
The characters are far and above the most bizarre I have read with their unique style that scares readers to the core. It has all the makings for a great horror book with blood, mysteries that surround the townspeople and turns that keep you glued to the pages. Yes I am going to say, this is one of my favorites of the author's works, and dare I say is right there among some well known horror writers like Stephrn King and Dean Koontz. I will highly recommend this book to all those who love a book that makes your heart race and love a great book written with tremrndous details. Well done Theo Cage. I am a huge fan.
I received a copy of this book from LibraryThing for an honest review.
Sean Chiller is a Corporal with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Winnipeg, Canada, working with the OMG Division (Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs). He and his wife, Tracy, are driving to Fargo, North Dakota with their daughter Ashley. Ashley has Cystic Fibrosis and there's an experimental treatment available in Fargo that might help lengthen her life.
They get caught in a terrible blizzard and end up in the fenced community of Berzerker and then the nightmares really start for this little family.
Author Cage did a fine job of building the suspense in this tale. The storyline involving GMO crops is almost too believable. The blizzard adds another level of scariness that I particularly enjoyed.
There are many different characters in this story, from townspeople, mad doctors, a military presence, to the berzerkers themselves. Character development is handled well and there are many surprises with the different characters.
I like horror stories that take place in frigid areas - don't know why but I just do. And the author used the inclement weather as almost another character in the book.
This is a scary horror story with blood and guts galore (so be forewarned). It not only has the physical aspects of a horror story but has some psychological scary bits thrown in too.
NOTE: I received this book in exchange for my honest review from the author.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was so impressed with this book. The way that Theo Cage builds tension is so good. I could feel myself reading with my neck sinking into my shoulders as the danger increased for Sean Chiller and his wife and daughter -Tracy and Ashley respectively.
They found themselves in an utterly odd town, you know that feeling when you know something is wrong but you can't put a finger on it? Well that's what they felt as soon as they drove into town, like a cloud of weird was sitting over the town along with a thick blanket of snow.
The welcome from the locals was about as cold as the weather. They were very stand-offish. They couldn't get served in the diner, the mayor and his wife were being furtive and the local sheriff made it pretty clear that he would rather the Chiller's weren't there. Nothing like a warm welcome...
I will say that this book may not be for the faint hearted, as there are some quite intense moments of bloody violence which does have its place in the context of the story but is quite descriptive nonetheless, just so you know.
I am a huge fan of Theo Cage and this is another excellent book from one of my favourite authors. Thought provoking, intelligent, intense and totally gripping! Five stars from me.
A young family en route to a very important medical appointment end up taking a detour into the Twilight Zone. The setting is out in the middle of nowhere; behind a tall, fenced perimeter is a small town. This town is controlled by a genetics corporation that uses locals for testing and happens to own surrounding law enforcement. It also helps they have the backing of the US Government.
Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) goes far beyond the local corn in this town. Young men are not at home with their families, but rather become part of a plot to create the ultimate killer.
The Chiller family just want to get out of Dodge, but car troubles are the least of their worries. Due to a bad snow storm, they accidentally gain access to this small town, and the locals aren't too pleased.
I found the story dragged a bit in places and overall it could have been chopped down a bit. There are some interesting action sequences and it is a tad gory, which is always a good thing!! I always assumed small-town living would drive to nuts, but this town takes the prize.
I recieved a copy of this book from the author for review purposes. It is currently free for KU members.
The book hooked me immediately as I could imagine myself in the same snowstorm Sean Chiller was in, curiously wondering what actions I would take to get my family to safety. The character development was on target, as there were times that I doubted the very character I had liked at first, only to like them again later on. Each time I thought I had figured out how the story would end, another plot twist appeared and I had to rethink everything over. The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger, so am extremely curious how Berzerker Nation will turn out and look forward to reading another Theo Cage book. The only thing I did not like was the cursing, as it did not add anything that I could not have interpreted myself. I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This was a well written, interesting book. It's scary along the lines of Stephen King, because maybe it could happen. Sean and Tracy are trying to get their daughter Ashley to a hospital that has a new therapy for CF. But they encounter a heavy snowstorm and end up in the town of Berzerker. Strange things are going on there, and the people in charge think that Sean is a spy from a rival company. They try to get out if town, while the townspeople try to keep them in. I won't spoil the end, because it's a nail-biter, but I will say that I was kept guessing as to what would happen next. I would recommend this book to anybody who likes Stephen King.
Once you start "Berzerker" by Theo Cage, you'll be just as trapped as the main characters, unable to stop until you figure out what's going on and how to get yourself out of a situation that continues to become increasingly creepy and surreal. As the snow falls and Sean Chiller and his family become trapped in the strange little town of Berzerker, the weather itself can be felt as its own menacing entity. But what lurks in this town is far from weather-induced. You won't be able to put this book down until you reach the heart-pounding, surprising and ultimately, satisfying, ending.

A cop and his wife on a road trip to take their sick daughter to a Dr. appt., end up stranded in a strange little town. When I first started this book I didn't know what to expect, but it got my attention pretty quickly. Loved the suspense, the twists, and was a bit surprised at the ending, but liked that also. It reminded me of a little bit of Robin Cook/Stephen King kind of book which you really don't want to pass up.
This book takes the idea of zombies and flips that on it's head. This book's made even scarier by the fact it's something you could see happening. The book has you on the edge of your seat, throughout the nonstop action and horror. It's a great concept that will keep you wanting more. A must read for people who enjoy genetics and mysteries!
