"Dear Readers: I wrote the Legends of Orkney series for my twelve-year-old son who challenged me to write something he would enjoy reading. The Red Sun is filled with exciting characters who struggle to find their true path. Sam learns so much about his past and how to overcome his anger, but will he continue to use his power for good or will he be drawn to the dark side? I hope you enjoy reading the Legends of Orkney series as much as I enjoyed writing them for you. The picture book series are dedicated to my father, the original Coal Thief! Keep reading!" - Alane Adams

Alane Adams grew up in an old Quaker town called Whittier in Southern California. Adams attended Whittier High School and was active in every possible sport including basketball (proudly claiming the nickname Breakaway Adams!) and swimming and diving. For college, Alane attended the University of Southern California where she wanted to be an English major, but family convinced her to become an accountant to help run a family business. After spending the next few decades helping to build one of the largest recycling companies on the West Coast, Alane left the family business behind to pursue her writing career. Before launching into writing full-time, Alane began teaching full-time at a local university. Finally, the Legends of Orkney series was born when her then 12-year-old son challenged Alane to write a book he could read. She hasn't stopped writing since that day.

Alane's favorite books include any story involving folklore, fantasy and fairytales. When Alane is not writing or teaching, she is hanging out with her three boys, each who have grown up having adventures to rival those of her characters.

This was a wonderful book. What happens when a curse is broken and another is started. What happens when a boy has not one but two destinies and must choose between them. This book is a great read for all those who like magic and adventure with a little comedy thrown in and some fast paced action for flavor. This is the first in the series and I am eagerly anticipating the second. Was too good to put down and finished it in one session.

4.25/5 Stars!!

This book was really awesome! I'll be posting my full review soon! :))

Full Review:
So hang on tightly 'cause here comes the review:

✨ "back to their pathetic life of grammar lessons and homework..."
If even witches from another realm think this, then who are you to disagree? This is the reason why aliens will never visit us! (lol okay, now that that's out of the way, let's continue)

✨ General Thoughts: This book was absolutely amazing! It was sassy and hilarious and sad and adventurous with its dose of darkness to balance the funny parts out.

✨At first, everything was happening so quickly I couldn't even understand what was actually happening. I was so confused and also worried because I thought that this was gonna last for the entire book (fortunately, it didn't).
✨Side Note: Fast paced books are amazing, but you know, too fast can also be bad, because it often prevents the reader from getting to know the characters better and so we can not get attached to them easily.
✨ The book got better and better by each passing chapter. As I mentioned at the beginning, it was so fun and full of adventures!
✨ Another good thing about this book is that the chapters are really short, so it's very convenient for anyone who has a lot of things to do, but would also like to sneak in reading a few pages once in a while!
✨The book was really educational too, because even though the author did mix real mythology (well as real as mythology can get lmao) with her imagination, anyone who hasn't got a clue about Norse Mythology got to learn a ton about it!
✨Even though this book belongs to the Middle Grade category, at some points it felt like a YA book. Now, I'm not sure if that's a bad thing or a good thing, but I personally did not mind!
✨My favourite character was Mavery! All of the characters were likeable, I mean sometimes Sam was too childish and annoying (so I had to remind myself that he's 12).
✨ I found really fascinating the way Odin was portrayed, and how Asgard was pictured!
✨I wanna see more of Sam's mother though, so I hope that we get to see more of her on book 2 (Kalifus Rising, is also out).
✨It did have some plot twists that were unpredictable!
✨Last thought: some parts of the book were sooo good I couldn't even put it down long enough to write my thoughts on my journal (yes, I keep a bookjournal lol).
✨Do I recommend this book? Of course and I do!

✨Final Rating: 4.25/5 STARS! ✨✨✨✨✨
You can get The Red Sun and Kalifus Rising on bookdepository, amazon, B&N, kindle & ibooks!
The Raven God, Book3 in the Legends of Orkney series will be out by September 2017!

Review: Legends Of Orkney: The Red Sun by Alane Adams
......................................
5.0 stars

I really love this book, It was cinematic to read. Fast-paced and full of revelations. Though it's children fiction story but I do believe it's something young adult could relate on, like decision making in life kind of realizations .
.
(BEWARE OF SPOILERS)
.
The story follows a 12-year-old kid from Pilot Rock,Oregon named Sam Baron. He happened to be the son of Lord Robert Barconian(who fall in love with a witch, Sam's mother) a descendant of Odin from the land of Skara-Brae,Orkney. The forbidden love between Sam's parents bought him to the mortal world to hide from the enemies. But years passed by, Sam started to unravel his true identity by the strange things happening in his surroundings. An evil witch was on quest on hunting Sam and that witch abducted his human friends, and Sam wanted to save them. Later in the story he travelled in the lands of Orkney through a stonefire to save his friends and when he arrived, Sam discovered an ancient curse has turned the sun into red and the cast of the red sun endangered the livings from the lands of Orkney. But Sam has his own priority, to save his friends. With only a guidance from a young witch named Mavery they started the adventure to save his friends, and later to stop the red sun spell from destroying the lands. And Sam must choose between the two sides the witches or the people from Orkney.

YOU WILL LOVE NORSE MYTHOLOGY BECAUSE OF THIS SERIES. I'M HONESTLY CLUELESS ABOUT NORSE BUT READING THIS BOOK MAKES ME WANT TO READ MORE ABOUT IT!!.

Sam has a regular human life and while he's always been quite strong he doesn't think there's anything extraordinary about him. This changes when his new substitute teacher isn't who she says she is. Sam thinks she's scary and he discovers that she really changed his regular English teacher into a lizard. She did this just to get near Sam, which is even creepier. When Sam finds out he's actually originally from Orkney and that they need his help there, his best friends Keely and Howie have already been captured and transported there.

As soon as Sam arrives he finds out that he doesn't only need to rescue his friends, but that he also has to rescue Orkney. The almost completely red sun is threatening to poison everything and it's up to Sam to stop the process and reverse it. On his journey he'll make new friends, he finds unexpected allies and he'll also be deceived and thoroughly tested. Will Sam be able to complete his missions or is this too much for him to ever achieve?

The Red Sun is a magical gripping story. Sam doesn't know anything about his heritage when all of a sudden he's presented with a huge responsibility. It's something he can handle though. He's fiercely loyal, he loves with his whole heart and he can be pretty impulsive. I liked how he continuously stands up for his friends. The truth has been kept from Sam and with a good reason. He has a lot to deal with, but he doesn't hesitate and tries to make a success of two different missions at the same time. He does everything with vigor, which makes him an interesting character to read about. His friends Keely and Howie are important to him and he doesn't let them down. Sam has a bit of a temper problem and he finally finds out where it comes from. I loved how Alane Adams portrays him.

The Red Sun isn't only about Sam though, I also really enjoyed reading about the other main characters and the creatures they meet on their way. I especially loved Mavery, a young, good witch who knows Orkney a much than Sam. Alane Adams shows her readers the value of true friendship, which for me is the most amazing thing about the Legends of Orkney series. She also understands adventures and is fantastic at writing combat scenes. Her world building is vivid and creative and her beautiful descriptions are a wonderful surprise gift. I fell in love with The Red Sun straight away. It's a book that deserves to be treasured.

**I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**

A book along the lines of Percy Jackson, but with Norse mythology. Sounds great, right?

I hated it. Now please temper that with the fact that my 9 year old says he loved it and won't let me give away the book. It was torture for me, and I couldn't wait to finish. I felt the main character was unlikable, as he seemed to go out of his way to make the worst possible decision. The other characters weren't developed much and you could take them or leave them. I didn't feel you got to know anyone very much. And some things that didn't make sense seemed to be put there just because other kids books do it. Like Sam's friend telling him that if he can't do it, no one can...or something along those lines. I literally stopped reading and stared at the book, "based on what???" The friend hadn't seen him do anything at that point. Neither fighting or magic, so where is that unwavering confidence coming from??? Just little things like that started wearing on me.

There's one scene that even CW agreed with me, the young lady is home alone waiting for her father to return. She hears a knock on the door and her first thought is that it must be her father. Seriously? That's your first thought? That would be my last thought because parents don't generally knock on their own door.

So as an adult, I was incredibly disappointed. CW did like it, but he even felt it was a stretch more than once. And what's worse, is I really wanted to love it. We were both excited to read this one.

It's around middle school aged, but I would recommend parents check it out themselves first. It's a bit dark fairly often, and Sam is not a perfectly charming character.

Hmmmm, maybe I should be recommending it. While I was annoyed, I was definitely feeling something strongly. lol

Alane Adams isn't a bad author. I think her writing was solid, and I would giver her another chance. But not Sam of Orkney...nope, I'm closing the book on this chapter. I think she needs to explore another genre and find her fit.

I picked this book up at Denver Comic Con.
The Author is so sweet and so kind! She wrote this book for her son - so they could go on the journey together. And I would say it is a great book for a middle grader.
It is a fun adventure to go on with Sam as he gets pulled into an alternate world he never knew he was a part of. He fight foes and makes mistakes, learns lessons and really grows.

However for an adult, it would not be my top recommendation. The plot and story line has a lot of similarities to other fantasy novels out there such as - Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings. There were a lot of times in the book where I had a hard time believing that a lot of the plot was original ideas and not just a conglomeration of a bunch of already existing fantasy novels. And because of this I played the comparison game a TON!

Because of this I think this I think this would be a great book to give to a young reader just getting into fantasy as it really takes the best aspects of each and mushes them together getting the reader excited. Keeping them enthralled in the story.

I also felt like there were a lot of unexplained plot holes - I know this is slotted to be a series, so I am sure more of the story will be explained in later books but as this first novel stands I am not likely to pick up the next one.

I commend Alane Adams for taking the leap into this crazy cool world, I am just not sure this world is for me.

When a dwarf appears in 12-year-old Sam's garage, Sam hardly knows what to make of his story. Witches are after him? His own mother is a witch, who left Orkney once to protect him? His father is a descendant of Odin? And now that this dwarf has found Sam, they have to travel back to this strange otherworld to break the curse of the Red Sun that's choking out all life in Orkney villages? None of this makes much sense to Sam, but it's clear that he's in the middle of something big, and doubly so when one of the witches kidnaps Sam's two best friends. Sam has no choice but to rescue his friends, and in doing so he might just save all of Orkney. Sam will need to choose his allies carefully, and avoid the traitors in nearly every race in the Ninth Realm.

What starts out looking like a retread of Riordan's Percy Jackson series quickly becomes its own story, with a darker tone and Norse flair. Sam struggles to understand himself and the sources--and purposes--of his anger, and must learn to channel his rage and energy into breaking an ancient curse and stopping a looming war. This fast-moving adventure--the beginning of a trilogy--is sure to appease mythology fans who are outgrowing Percy Jackson's antics and looking for a darker, weightier tale. Great choice for middle-school collections.

Before I picked up this book I was expecting just another adventure book that would not really grip me, given it was written with adolescents, particularly boys, in mind. As a retired middle school teacher, I have read many stories meant to grab reluctant readers, particularly boys. Most miss the mark. This book was right on track. I was sucked into the story from the very beginning. I found the characters well developed and the storyline gripping. The suspense built, making this a true page-turner. The tie-ins with Norse mythology were well thought out. I found myself getting lost in the book and Sam’s adventures. Ms. Adams is a natural storyteller and I anxiously await the next volume of this series.

This was a magical book weaving the journey of young Sam learning about himself while taking us to the land of Orkney. Mythical creatures, wonderful adventures, twists and turns abound in this first novel by Alane Adams. I can't wait to see where Sam is headed in the 2nd book of the series. A great read!

I really enjoyed reading this book. Has a lot of interesting characters, especially Sam. I thought it was a very creative and well written story. I can't wait for the next book in the series, The Moon Pearl.

I actually picked up this whole trilogy when I met the author at the OC Children's Book Festival in Fall 2017. She's very sweet and loved my enthusiasm for her books. She also gave me a notepad, pen, and character cards to go with my signed book set. What a great person and a fun series that I anticipated reading.

On the cover, the book claims "Percy Jackson meets Norse Mythology," and I'm like...so, Magnus Chase? But both of these books were published around the same time. While Magnus Chase delves into the Norse mythology that is more read and well-known, The Red Sun takes Norse mythology and twists some of the less-known mythical elements, deviating from what I am seeing in contemporary Norse mythology books for younger readers, making this book more unique than I first thought it might be.

Sam, a twelve-year-old boy, has his world turned upside down when a substitute teacher turns his real teacher into a giant lizard! Sam is whisked away to Orkney where he is the only one who can save Orkney from the red sun. The sun has been poisoned by a wizard of the past, Rubicus, and is slowly killing crops, animals, and people. Why is Sam the only one who can save Orkney? He is a descendant of the Norse god, din, as well as the descendant of a witch. Male witches are not heard of, save for Rubicus, and the people of Orkney wonder just what side Sam will choose to be on.

Two of Sam's friends from Earth are taken by the witches, and his biggest concern is to save them, saving a world he is not familiar with being on the back-burner of his mind. Another friend follows him to Orkney, aiming to protect Sam. He also meets a young witch who was banished as a failure from the witches  island, and she becomes a great asset and friend when Sam begins to learn about his own magical powers.

One of the things I liked about this novel was the deviation from traditional Norse mythology that is more common in literature. For example, Sam must venture to the underworld (Niflheim). He encounters Sinmara, theorized to be just another name for/deviation of Hel from Norse myth. I've seen Hel in a number of contemporary novels, but never encountered the name Sinmara before. I also really liked the whole witch aspect, because oftentimes Norse Mythology just has a bunch of giants (there are giants in this novel), but I've never really associated Norse mythology with witches before, so I found that unique as well.

Something I found a bit off-putting was the writing consistency. Sometimes something would be said again and I'd think "Didn't I already read this?" The story itself also felt a bit lacking in action. While Same went around and did all these things, I feels like each thing was somewhat disconnected or wondered why he did what he did. Other than those few instances, I enjoyed the character and the world of Orkney. I want to see how this series continues to differ from other books in the genre, and I am also looking forward to the prequel children's series The Witches of Orkney, featuring Sam's mother as a leading character.

This is a fun book perfect for a middle grade classroom. It's plot-driven with the Norse mythology similar to Riordan's books, and it has a magical element which reminds me of Cinda Williams Chima books. If you like either of these authors, I think you'll like Alane Adams.

Disclaimer: I received a physical review copy from the author but it will not affect my thoughts and opinions.

The book is utterly magic. The concept is really good which is the reason why I got hooked with it. The Red Sun is very mesmerizing because of the Norse Mythology and Percy Jackson combination. In this present time it is somewhat alike with Magnus Chase and the gods of Asgard. Continuous flipping occured to me like wanting for more and more. It is like riding a boat and the flow of the river makes you move along in reading The Red Sun until you reached the end.

Sam Barconian has a special condition. A son of a witch and a son of Odin. Sam's existence is the reason why. He started the war between the two side. Along with the cursed Sun, he must protect the Orkney as well as protecting his friends. The choices are very complicated but will Sam make it until the end and will not regret his decisions? In his journey he will discover on which side he is in.

The plot is in a very continuos flow. No ideas are left behind or the author just put some ideas ad then that is it. Every part makes sense. Every shard gives essence to the story. I like how the author puts the turning point and some cliff hanging chapters. That is the reason why you are wanting for more when reading this. On the other side, I just want to point out some parts which the book lacks. I understand the story is a very captivating adventurous one. I like how the main character and the team move to reached the end along with the problem they encountered and their interactions but find The Red Sun a very serious type. I like the way how the intense feelings grew or the seriousness and bravery but it lacks some aspects like funny sides of the story. Maybe there are some but I did not feel it. Don't get me wrong because this is what I really feel. I appreciate the parts with sorrowness because it really melts my heart. And before I forgot, this story has a touch of Harry Potter because of unnique spells. You know witches!

In a usual adventurous genre, the main character has a team. Sam Barconian is a mighty protagonist and somewhat antagonist. The main trajectory is which side will he join? Is it the good or the evil. Interesting idea right? Maybe there are things that are very uexpected. This is really a good read. Sam as usual will do his best to protects here friends. He carried the character well. Unlike other main lead, I did not hate him for being clumsy with his decisions. I really hate main leads when they do something clumsy but I will accept the truth that it gives foundation to the story. But Sam Barconian, Son or Odin and Rubicus is very unique for me. Keely, the cute adviser of Sam, Howie, the hyper one and fearless, and Mavery, the cute little witch that knows lot of things. A very nice teamwork right? And yes I love witches even though they are the antagonist. Balfins, Falcory and other group in Orkney that I don't remember. They really give headaches because of thinking in which side they are on. All in all characters are well developed.

If you are looking for a adventurous and Norse Myth read, you must read this. I will highly recommend this if you have alot of time to read because you need to devour every pieces of The Red Sun. It is a unique story with traps, twists, and somewhat deceiving. It has a book two entitle Kalifus Rising, which will be released on September 2016. The end is just the start. All in all I will give this one 4 THUMBS UP!

“You can’t blame yourself … that’s just the way it is … You cant change that, only accept it and figure out what it mean to you.”

Disclaimer: I receive a copy of this book from the Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my review in anyway.

The Red Sun is the first book in the Legends of Orkney Series written by the amazing author Alane Adams. It is a very fast paced, action packed, adventurous and exciting fantasy book that anyone at any age would love. It revolves around our main character, Sam Baron, a 12 year old boy who has two destinies. He either will be the one to save the lands of Orkney or lead them to its destruction. What would he choose?

In general, it is like any other fantasy series out there where our main character didn't know his own identity and suddenly magical or mystical creatures suddenly pops up in his life which will become the turning point in his not so exciting existence. With that being said, Legends of Orkney still stands strong on its own for it emphasized Norse Mythology which is not really tackled on most fantasy books compared to greek mythology.

As for myself, I am not really familiar with Norse gods and creatures and it was really fun to gain new knowledge just by reading a book. This is what books should be. It should not only entertain you but also lets you learn new things. As a middle grade book, it is a great way for kids to learn Norse Mythology.

This book is very well written. I really admire how beautiful and yet understandable Alane Adams writing style is. From the start up to the end, her use of words are simple but still captivates her readers. Her writing style is definitely a perfect fit for this book.

For the characters, they were really different from each other. Our main character, Sam, was a character I didn't like that much and up to the end, I didn't connect to. He was very short tempered and stubborn. He also makes a lot of bad decisions and acts in a whim without even thinking about what the result will be. But in the end, he was able to redeem himself and became this strong and a little bit more mature character. For his friends, I really admire how they are always there for Sam even though he always makes this crazy decisions that can endanger them all. They are the epitome of what friends should be. Through ups and downs, they never leave each others side and do everything just to save each other. Lastly, I really liked our main antagonist, Endera. Even though she was supposed to be the evil one in this book, I did like her personality. She was smart and clever which really stands out to other book villains.

The only problem is that it is hard to believe that 12 year old kids can fight and survive with only their friends around. Plus they built a raft which I think kids like their age can't make. It is a bit unbelievable for me but with that being said, it is a fantasy book and anything can happen.

To sum it all up, this is really a great middle grade book that I know everyone will love. I still certainly advise for parents out there to check out the book first before letting your kids read it.

If you love fantasy and adventure, I highly recommend you to read this book.

Final Rating: 4/5

I’ve been struggling a little bit with middle grade reads of late and this one was no exception. While it took me quite awhile to get into the story after getting through a hefty chunk of the book I was quite intrigued to see how this one went and finished it off quite quickly.

After a quick prologue in Orkney to set the scene of what is to come, you are introduced to our main character Sam;- a typical 12 year old boy battling some anger issues, or so he thinks. The first quarter of the book introduces the reader to Sam’s current life and friends and then very quickly turns things upside down as he soon realises that things aren’t quite what they seem. Sam along with his two best friends are soon embroiled in the battles of another realm – Orkney where Sam holds the key to breaking a age old curse and saving not only Orkney, but Earth and the other Norse realms as well.

If you are a fan of fantasy this book is a bit like a comfy and familiar pair of pyjamas. While the story and world is new many of the ideas and the novel outline is quite comparable to other well known middle grade favourites such as Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. While I wouldn’t put this book quite in the same league – it definitely felt a bit clunky and it didn’t grab me in quite the same way, I think it will still be a hit with the tween and teen readers looking for a good fantasy/adventure series.

The journey Sam takes is an interesting one and while he doesn’t really change or grow in the novel he does learn some important things about himself and is put into some interesting predicaments. Torn between his two bloodlines – his mother was a witch while is father is a son of Odin, you expect him to make some pretty life changing choices. These sadly seem to be glossed over or not quite so anguish driven as they possibly could be which is this books biggest let down. I also felt that the story was very black and white with the witches being “bad” and the people of Orkney and Odin being “good” however I really feel in these children’s and young adult novels that its the shades of grey and the realisation that life isn’t quite so simple that makes things interesting.

I was incredibly frustrated with how little people trusted Sam in the novels. They had vast expectations of him dropping everything about his life and fixing the curse however I didn’t feel that he was treated well in the slightest. It made it very hard to cheer him on in his journey because part of me simply couldn’t care if everyone on the planet dropped dead the rudeness and lack of understanding was inexcusable. His band of friends were great and I also would have liked to see them developed as individual characters in a bit more detail, you go a couple of chapters from their perspectives but not enough to really bring them to life.

The ending of the novel was incredibly well done and the battle scene was very descriptive but not overstated making it enjoyable. I also liked the way the story played out with how to break the curse and the inclusion of the Norse Gods in assisting at the final battle. A fun read and I think a real winner for the fantasy fans here!

You can watch my full review here: https://youtu.be/i4Qs5nde58Q or read it below!

Sam quickly finds out he’s not who he thought he was. Just a normal pre-teen from Pilot Rock, not so much. We end up on a journey with Sam from the mortal world into the ninth realm of Orkney. There his past begins to unfold. As Sam learns not only of himself and his family heritage he’s also given a mission… save Orkney from the cursed Red Sun. The biggest question is will he be able to save Orkney from the Red Sun with the help of his friends? This is an adventurous tale about magical lands, mythical creatures, and finding out who you are.

First off let me start by saying that I did end up playing a little bit of a comparison game only because it’s got some heavy Chronicles of Narnia/Harry Potter vibes. Even with the similarities, it was such a fun read. The world that Alane built is vivid and her descriptive writing really allows you to be pulled into it all. I could easily envision myself in Orkney with Sam and his friends. Speaking of which, his friends (okay and Sam too) are all fiercely loyal to each other. I loved how much Alane touched on the value of friendship in here. This makes for such a fantastic middle-grade read!

Lastly, I’ve never really been all that interested in Norse mythology (I did get into Greek mythology for a bit back in high school), but I think it’s safe to say that after reading this I’m beyond intrigued. I look forward to researching more of the mythology behind the Legends of Orkney series as well as continuing on with Sam and his friends!

*Author sent me a free copy in exchange of an honest review.*

First of all, let me tell you that I love the cover so much. It is just so beautiful and I love the little details. The cover looks magical enough.

I like the author's writing style. I got hooked in the first few chapters. For me, there was no boring part in this book! This book is a really exciting read. I also like how each chapter ends. It makes you want to read the next chapters and find out what will happen next.

There were times that I get a little annoyed at Sam's attitude, but I do like how he developed throughout the story. I also like his squad and I really, really adore Mavery. I also love the fact that Sam cares so much about his friends and that they always stand up for him too. I really enjoyed the friends relationship.

I was surprised with the ending because it wasn't what I expected. On the contrary, it made me more excited to read the sequel! All in all, I really enjoyed this book. It was quite entertaining. I recommend this book to younger readers who love adventures!

In the YA fantasy novel, The Red Sun, Sam suddenly finds his normal life turned upside down. Sam’s English teacher is missing, and his substitute is seriously weird, like magically turn a lizard into a giant monster weird. Through a series of increasingly odd events, Sam finds himself thrown into another world, where he discovers that he needs to work against terrifying forces in order to save his friends, his parents, and himself.

I really loved the writing in the Red Sun. It’s youthful and entertaining, perfect for a YA novel. This is a great book both for kids and adults. Sam is a strong and fun lead, and there is a great assortment supporting characters. I really appreciated that the action is both intense but still appropriate for kids. This is a really strong start to the series!

I enjoyed this book so much! I was preparing for a Harry Potter meets Percy Jackson theme in this book and that's what I definitely got - I usually hate comparing books but I mean it in a good way!

This book exceeded my expectations and I definitely enjoyed it a lot more than I was expecting to! I loved all the talking animals, the witches, the god's and every other mythical aspect:) However, I definitely admired the family and friends relationship focus it had as although all these crazy things happen - family was kept at the forefront of it all and shown that family & friends are more important than the situation they were in.

And the ending shocked me! I was expecting for everything to go back to the way it was but it definitely hasn't! I won't spoil anything but I'm more than excited to read the next book soon:)

This book is a great read for the middle school, high school, and older reader! The beginning of this book grabs the reader's interest and makes for a great start.

My favorite character was Rego because of the role he played in the book as Sam's friend and mentor. I related to him because he looked out for his friends in the face of any danger they came upon. I found the human characters believable, as if their traits could be found in today's generation.

My favorite scene involved Sam using his magic. Ms. Adams used imagery to the utmost expectation of the reader. The scenes came alive in my mind due to her fantastic imagery!!

I'm highly anticipating book two in this series.

This book was an awesome read, it is filled with all sorts of creatures and tons of adventure. There are so many twists and turns it constantly keeps you guessing. "The Red Sun" was very reminiscent of Percy Jackson, Thor, and Lord of the Rings. If you enjoyed any of those movies/books you will not be disappointed with "The Red Sun". I loved the idea of the poisonous sun being intertwined with Sam's anger issues. With witches, dwarves, mythological Gods, and imps what's not to love about this book?! A great addition to the young adult fantasy novels.

Nice start to a new YA fantasy series with an ensemble cast with references to Norse mythology and Native American culture and folklore. There is some magic action and a couple revelation moments. But still, mysteries and questions presented that need to be addressed.

The part of the story that kept me curious was in regards to the development of the main character. Sam, the reluctant hero, is a character that is either loved or hated. It took me awhile to warm up to this character. At the midpoint of the book I did not yet know where I stood.

The other characters in the story were colorful including dwarves, witches and other strange creatures (as baddies).

I did truly enjoy this book. It reminded me a bit as a cross of Percy Jackson and the Chronicles of Narnia with a tiny but of the Inheritance series thrown in. It was fun and easy to care about the characters.
Downsides are the writing is a bit simplistic even for a young adult genre. It was too fast pace. If my mind was distracted even a little I would find the book in the middle of action or find it was already over and I never even saw it coming.
And although the story as a whole was very engaging it does take a little bit before I could get hooked.
I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys young teen style fantasy and norse mythology books.

This super exciting book is about a boy named Sam who thinks he's just a regular guy until some pretty weird things start happening. It turns out that Sam is the son of the son of Odin, the Norse god and the son of a witch, which shouldn't have happened but did. Sam gets yanked into a huge conflict with the people of the Orkney Islands. There's magic, mythology, danger, mythical beasts, and friendship. It's a terrific story, especially if you liked books like Harry Potter or the Lightning Thief.

A great book for fans of Harry Potter! Lots of magic and adventure, with comic interludes included. The main character faces moral dilemmas and obstacles in ways which can be applied to the obstacles of young readers as well.

If my children were still young, I can imagine us reading this (and future books in the series) the same way we did the Harry Potter series--a chapter or two together every night, then discussing what we thought might happen next.

I would recommend this to all middle grade readers, particularly young boys.

While I felt that the book was a little rushed and the character relationships a little awkward, I also thought it was an awesome adventure. A little juvenile, sure, but young adults must find that easier to relate to than I did. I also wish there had been more about the Norse legends and deities, as I really am into the lore and such. Hope the next book will go more Into that and I look forward to seeing how Sam's adventures continue!

Good read. Definitely has a Percy Jackson vibe to it. I loved the Norse mythology in this, and I really enjoyed a couple of the side characters. I also liked how difficult it was for Sam to manage his dark side and the anger that built up inside him. I feel like that's something kids can really relate to. I'll be interested to see how the game plays into this.

I don't normally read books geared towards teens but this didn't have that typical feel to it. It is well written and fast paced, and had likeable characters. I really enjoyed playing the interactive game as well.

I felt like this was written for a young teen. It is adventure/fantasy and the hero is twelve yeArs old. It was actually very good.
