Screech Owls #9

Nightmare in Nagano

Rate this book
Travis and the Screech Owls are flying to Nagano, site of the 1998 Winter Olympics, to play in Big Hat - the same arena where for the first time NHL stars competed for medals and women played Olympic hockey!

No one is more excited than Nish to be in Japan, the land of the rising sun – and the electrically heated toilet seat, and a soft drink called “Sweat”! He and the gang see new things on-ice too. Their Japanese opponents play a very different style of hockey. And Nish, who has discovered a new form of martial arts on his trip, is counting on a mysterious “force shield” to help his game.

Then a shadow falls over the tournament. The mayor of Nagano collapses at the opening-night banquet. The Owls are caught in a freak avalanche while snowboarding. A menacing stranger is following them.…As the Owls head to the finals, one question is on everyone’s mind: When will the nightmare end?

Nightmare in Nagano is the ninth book in the Screech Owls Series.

Another Screech Owls book (number nine, I believe). This time, the team finds itself in Nagano, Japan, where they take part in an "Junior Olympic" tournament hosted in the Big Hat, the Olympic ice arena for the 1998 Winter Olympics. However, at the opening banquet, the mayor of Nagano dies from what appears to be a heart attack, but later is found out to be blowfish poison. And the Screech Owls are on the case. Fortunately, paralyzed Data is along and videotaping the whole trip. The team has some video evidence that implicates the killer. But, can they discover who that killer is before the killer gets to them? And, more importantly, can they win the Junior Olympic tournament?

These are Big Questions for tweens, but I bet you can figure out the answers (hint: the Owls have not lost a tournament since book one). As usual with this series, the writing is good for kids. The characterization continues to be fairly consistent. Nish (Wayne Nishakawa, the comedy relief of the team) continues to be outlandish. This time, he plays on his Japanese heritage and says the single Japanese phrase he knows over and over, learns how to play goalie using a force shield he learns from a Japanese monk, and introduces the team to its new drink of choice: Sweat (though not in that order). All the Owls are respectful hockey players, almost aspirations of what Mr. MacGregor believes hockey players should be. Which, truth be told, is what I kind of like about the series. The plots can be fairly predictable; I can usually figure out whodunit about two-thirds of the way through the tale. But, again, these books are not for me. My son eats up the stories and wants more. So, I give them to him--one chapter at a time...

These are great chapter books for kids who like Hockey!! What fun books with mysteries that are appropriate for kids 9 and up!

Each book has a an exciting hockey game and a mystery to solve. The characters in the books are very relateable for kids of this age and engaging. I love that their are both boys and girls on the team and they all contribute!

The stories also contain lessons on teamwork, sportsmanship and friendship! Terrific lessons for all kids!

There are a few times when I thought the content was a bit off for the age, but then when you compare it to modern video games, movies and tv shows, it was mild. Kids today are ages ahead of their past counterparts and these books reflect that.

Hockey fans will find a lot to love here. The play-by-play is really fun to read even for non-sporties like myself.

Cover Art - Eye catching and easy to tell the theme of the books.

" A funny action packed book for people who love hockey and need a brake from there normal books . This book is about a Canadian hockey team that travel to Japan for the first ever peewee hockey tornoment .The author described the characters very well but it was a little confusing in the middle of the story. A book for 8 to 12 year old kids.
