Composition Field Notes: A Concise Pocket Guide for the Impressionist Landscape Painter
Most painting problems are not color problems. They are composition problems.
When an outdoor landscape painting fails, it rarely comes down to the pigment on your brush or the brand of your canvas. Almost always, the collapse began in the first five minutes—with an indecisive focal point, an accidental bullseye, or an unedited scramble of nature’s infinite details.
Composition Field Notes is a direct, field-ready reference manual written specifically for the working landscape painter. Stripping away dry, academic geometry and formulaic rules, professional Impressionist Malcolm Dewey delivers practical visual structures you can apply immediately at the easel or out en plein air.
Inside this concise guide, you’ll The Four-Value How to simplify overwhelming outdoor scenes into strong, readable masses before laying down a stroke of color.Dynamic Reliable structural designs—steelyards, diagonal masses, S-curves, and grouping principles—that lead the viewer’s eye with intention.Handling Nature's How to ruthlessly edit trees, horizons, and foliage so your painting communicates light, not clutter.Plein Air Field Quick thumbnailing habits to test visual balance in seconds and prevent hours of wasted paint.Common Traps & Quick How to diagnose and rescue a composition that feels flat, static, or divided in half.Whether you work in oils or acrylics, in the studio or out in the elements, this pocket guide serves as a reliable second eye—helping you build the quiet, structural discipline that makes expressive painting possible.
Stop fighting your scene. Build strong foundations, capture the light, and paint with clear visual intent.
