For centuries, a curse has plagued the isolated island of Asteria. Men, on the cusp of adulthood, are blessed, disappearing from the human realms. Every nine years, the witch queens host a competition in which human women vie for a blessed mate. Since its inception, the Courting has appeased the threads of fate, but, this time it just may lead to their unravelling.
Four characters, four interwoven
A woman in search of her long lost love… Maggie knew she would compete from the moment her first love disappeared before her eyes. Now, she will disobey her family and pledge herself to the queens to find him again. But the game is not what it seems and the competition may take more from her than she bargained for.
An outsider with a mission of his own… After preparing for years, Luca poses as one of the blessed to pursue his own objective. What he hadn’t planned for was meeting a woman worth courting. Can he keep his secrets while wanting to share his heart?
A witch forced to play a role… All Boudi wants is to hone her growing power and finish her higher studies. As an orphan, she has no say when she is forced to play a deceptive pawn. Yet when her heart unsuspectedly becomes entangled with one of the blessed, her role in the game begins to blur.
A man with no past… With no memory since his blessing, Cae returns to find his true mate. This is not a game to him, but rather his destiny. His path is splintered when he falls for a woman who’s not who she seems.
As the competition grows increasingly challenging and deadly, love blooms and matches are made, weaving deception with hope and desire.
The Fraying of Fates is an Epic Fantasy Romance and the first book in the Tapestries Untold.
From the peaks of the Trivia to the streets of Neith, this book ends on a cliff.
What an intriguing debut! We’re introduced to Asteria, a world ruled by witches, where humans and witches mostly live separately. Every nine years, an event called the Courting takes place, where women can enter the witches’ territory in the hope of finding their “mate”. Those possible mates are human men, who were selected by the witches (blessed) when they were younger. They were taken away from their previous lives, lost all their memories and were prepared to enter the Courting. It’s a fascinating concept and there’s so much mystery surrounding the witches, the Courting and the characters’ pasts that I was constantly wondering what was really going on.
I’ll admit that the beginning took me a little while to get into. The story starts with a mysterious scene, followed by some introductory passages about the moons, and I found it quite confusing. Once we met the first two main characters, things became easier to follow. Maggie is a young woman who wants to enter the Courting because she wants to find her former lover Spestian, who was blessed by the witches. Boudi is a young witch who isn't really interested in the Courting at the start of the book. Maggie’s chapters were the ones I connected with most at first, while Boudi’s chapters felt more focused on introducing the world and its customs. That made it harder for me to really get sucked into the story completely at the beginning of the book. But then the Courting started and everything changed. From that moment on, I was completely drawn in.
There were a lot of mysteries in the story, especially from the moment the two main male characters, Luca en Cae, were introduced. Who exactly is Luca and what is he trying to achieve? Why can he use Maggie’s name and others can't? Which one of the courtiers is Spestian? What is the connection between the jewellery? Which clues are hidden in the texts about the moon and in the children's stories? And let's not forget the mysterious opening scene and Vera, what's that all about? The book gives us some answers, but it also leaves plenty of questions behind, which I think is a great setup for the sequel.
I also have to admit that I really enjoyed Boudi’s character. At first, I wasn’t sure what to make of her, but she really grew on me as the story progressed and ended up being the character I connected with most. Maggie and Luca were also interesting to follow and I’m definitely curious to see how all of these characters will develop in the next books.
There are definitely characters and storylines that I’d love to see explored in more depth, but considering this is the author’s debut, I was genuinely impressed by the world-building and the overall concept. There is so much potential here and I’m excited to see how the story and characters grow from this point onwards.
So... do I want my 15-year-old daughter to read this book too? Nooooo...but only because of the level of spice!
Is the concept original and intriguing? Absolutely.
Do I want to know what happens next? Definitely.
So, Aubery Sloane, thank you so much for letting me read this ARC-book and hurry up with the next book...I want to know if some of my suspicions are correct!
We are introduced to many elements of the story quickly. The book moves fast and there’s subtly in references needed even early in the book. We meet the main characters and with an established world easily, but there’s already something bigger at play. Not just in The Courting, but the witches themselves seem to not know everything about their kind, let along the humans that arrive.
The trials are afoot, the men have arrived, and every test gets bloodier for both the men and women of The Courting. The author has done an impressive job of evading the piling questions of the reader as she entrenches the reader further into the world of Asteria. Two FMC and 2 MMC have emerged early in the story, Maggie and Boudi as well as their counterparts Luca and Cae. All with mysterious pasts and none are entirely truthful as to why they’ve entered The Courting. The spicy scenes are hottttttt and continuing the multi-POV during the scenes!! We finally learn more about The Courting, what lays beyond the mist, and still have so many questions about what’s really going on in the land of the witches.
Holy fuck…. Literally.
Overall So many highlights, questions, and the story itself kept me on the edge turning pages for not only answers but more of what would come. I love this book, the elements, the mystified world the author has created, and the spice scenes are amazing!! I hope the author continues with the story and the characters to her fullest extent!
Blessed be your night sky. As the moon guides you, Let the stars light your path.
FMC: The author does something daring and gives not only a multi-POV but 2 FMCs, Boudi and Maggie. One a human, one a scribe witch. One only having been told stories and rumors of the witches land that lay beyond the pass, and the other having grown up in the world run by The Moirai. Together they learn about each other’s worlds and find that neither have been given the truth of what’s surrounding them and the dangers yet to come.
MMC: Matching the leading females, and true to the theme of the book, the 2 MMCs, Cae and Luca, are introduced much later but are no less important in discovering more about The Courting. Cae has lost his memories of the world he knew before being blessed as a teenage boy, and Luca finds that his mission may not be as easy as he thought in the world run by female witches.
Liked The celestial calendar, the circular year, the way the witches culture is established is fairly void of Christian influence and is set in more pagan/Greek ideology which is a refreshing setup. The author has clearly done her research. The intrigue is high and only gets higher with each chapter and clue!
Disliked The only thing I can find to dislike about the book is that the second one is not yet out… and the cliffhanger!!!
Let me start by saying, this was my first ever ARC. I felt every bit of that pressure. What if I dont like it? What if I can't finish it? What if it's poorly written? I mean, this author spent a huge amount of time writing this book. Writing a book is essentially sending a piece of yourself into the world and trusting others to be honest but gentle.
Imagine my utter relief when I absolutely adored this story. 😅
The magic system is totally unique to anything I've read. While witchcraft isn't a new concept, this author has added details which make it stand out in a totally new way.
The story is set in Asteria a world ran by witches. Every 9 years the Courting is held. Women come from near and far in an effort to be found worthy to find their mate. There's a lot at play here, and trust that not everything presented through these trials can be taken at face value.
The multiple POV helps the reader understand all the details and mysteries of this trial. And for what it's worth, there wasn't a MC POV that I didn't like. Each experience and POV allowed me to unravel a little more of the mysteries ahead for these characters. For much of the book, you're confused. But you're absolutely meant to be as our main characters are too!
Plot twists abound as you move through this world where nothing and no one are exactly as they seem.
All in all, this is a fantastically well written and intriguing debut novel from this Author. I will absolutely re-read before the release of book 2. I will also be purchasing a copy of book 1 for a book trophy.
Thank you, Aubrey Sloane for trusting me with this ARC! You should be incredibly proud of yourself for gracing us with this gem!
I am not quite sure where to start on this book! It was so different than anything I’ve read before. I’ve read plenty of romantasy books with different levels of spice, different types of magic, and different worlds, but this one is quite unique on all counts! In the beginning, I though I might have to DNF to be quite honest. It starts out quite slow and for a while. What kept me going was all the mystery. I love a good mystery. There are multiple POV’s throughout the story which felt a little heavy at times, but I do appreciate that they are necessary and they make the story much more interesting. About halfway through I knew I was right to have kept going! It’s the first book in a series so it does leave you hanging, but man I definitely can’t wait for the next one so I can get all the answers I need! I wish some of the world building had been a little more fleshed out because some of it was really good, but I don’t understand the different times of the year and how the moons all work. That part felt a bit unnecessary or heavy with all the moons to keep track of. I eventually just stopped caring about that bit as it didn’t seem to matter too much other than as a frame for the whatever the witches are up to. I think the best part about the story is watching the developing relationships between the four main characters and not just the spicy, romantic ones. They all find friendship and camaraderie with one another despite their different backgrounds and goals. Overall, I think it was a unique take on a well known genre that draws you in for many reason. It may not be as full or robust as I might want in some ways, but I am glad that I finished it and I will be reading the next one!
Every nine years, on the Full Moon of Death, Human women from far and wide travel to Neith —the city of Witches— to present themselves to the three queen witches of Asteria, The Moirai, & participate in a nine-moons-long event to find their blessed mate. Choice human men are “blessed” by Minerva as boys, and return (without their memories) as men to Neith to take their place as Courtiers. Our story follows 4 people, each joining The Courting competion for different reasons:
-Maggie (or Maddie) hopes to find Spestian, a boy she fell in love with who was blessed by Minerva in youth. -Boudi is a student witch in Neith, recruited to participate to make the competition “more interesting”. -Cae is a blessed male and former friend of Luca. -Luca is blessed male with secrets of his own and dangerous questions about Asteria and the Courting.
Aubery Sloane… come to the front and EXPLAIN YOURSELF!! The last chapter had my jaw on the floor and my heart in my ass! I found myself fully invested from the start. The world building is amazing, and it’s clear that there’s even more to come. I enjoyed how everything was explained as the plot progressed and wasn’t a huge info dump like most fantasy books can be. Once all the puzzle pieces started coming together I could not put my iPad down. AND the spice?? Top-tier. Even though the story is unresolved, I am so excited to see what comes next for our fated group! Please say you’re starting book 2 ASAP!
A huge thank you to the author for providing me with this ARC!
Tropes: high fantasy romance, greek mythology inspired, 4 povs & 2 m/f romances, courtship trials, witches x humans, fate x free will, forbidden love, hidden identities
The blurb and tropes instantly grabbed my attention. Right from the start, you could feel that something deeply mysterious was going on behind the scenes, and that constant undercurrent of suspense kept me on absolute edge as the story unfolded.
I really liked each character and their relationships. We follow two parallel relationships that couldn’t be more different, yet I loved them both equally! Cae and Baudi brought so much stability, loyalty, and devotion, while Luca and Maggie were absolute fire with all their turmoil, tension, and passion.
The friendship that forms between all of them is so heartwarming. I adored seeing how far they were willing to go to protect one another.
Pacing wise, this book does not slow down, every chapter was super action packed and multi pov format made the reading experience even more entertaining. I loved watching all the puzzle pieces slowly fall into place.
...and then came that ending. I was left utterly shocked! I need the next book in my hands IMMEDIATELY. 🤍
I was fortunate enough to get an Advanced Reader Copy of this book, The Fraying of Fates. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- For centuries, a curse has plagued the isolated island of Asteria. Since its inception, the Courting has appeased the threads of fate, but, this time it just may lead to their unravelling.
Four characters, four interwoven stories.
Now for my review: I absolutely loved this story. It was so unique, and I loved the elements of magic, and the mystery surrounding the witches, the Courting, and our main characters. The multi-pov was great and I enjoyed getting to understand the characters more through it. Boudi was definitely my favorite and most relatable character for myself personally, and I enjoyed seeing her growth throughout the book. The world building was amazing as well! I think this is an amazing debut for this author and I can't wait to see what comes next! I'm so glad I got the opportunity to read it ❤️
I fell in love with the world that we delved into with this book, the characters were enchanting, the witchy vibes were vibing, the world was luring and the writing was beautiful, I adored every page.
I really enjoyed the characters that we encountered in this book, I wanted to know more and more about them with each page turn.
the world is well written, as a person who sees everything that she reads, it was well described that I was immersed from the very first page. I like being whisked away into the new and unknown, that's what made me enjoy this book even more.
the writing was well done!! I was able to slip into the world easy since all of my senses do get entangled with the book that I am reading. I do love the vibes this story gave me too, I can't wait to see what happens next.
to the author: thank you for entrusting me to read and review your book, I enjoyed every moment of this story of yours. it is well written and brought a whole lot of emotions, another thing I love when I am reading. thank you for sharing your story with the world.
This book was exactly what I needed to pull me out of my reading slump. Everything I had read recently was starting to blend together as either a generic storyline or something that needed maybe a couple more rounds of proofreading before being released into the wild. This one was both well-written and incredibly unique. The worldbuilding was amazing! I love a witchy world, new social constructs, and a magic system that intuitively makes sense even though it isn't one I've seen before. There was a lot of mystery, but that only made me want to read the next one more. You got the feeling that it was intentional.
It was also very refreshing to see an ensemble of characters rather than just one central couple. We got to see not only two separate romances going down, but also friendships forming between the different characters. The friendships were key. But the spice... Other reviewers have mentioned it so I probably don't need to say it was excellent. But it was.
My only complaint is that the next one isn't out yet. I eagerly await a release date.
I genuinely hated having to put this book down to work or sleep, and I hated it even more when I reached the end and realized I now have to wait for more! I loved the storyline and became completely invested in the mystery surrounding the Courting. I have SO many questions, starting with the comb because…what exactly is going on there? I’m also currently in a love-hate relationship with Boudi/Cae, Luca/Maggie, Maggie/Spestian. I don’t know who to trust, what to believe, or which relationships I’m supposed to be rooting for and I mean that in the best way. Oh, and can we talk about the Maggie/Maddie business because girl, I need to know more. This story left me with far more questions than answers, and I cannot wait to see where everything goes next. Thank you so much to Aubery for giving me the opportunity to read an advanced copy! ✨
The Fraying of Fates will keep you guessing and leaves you in mystery, an absolute page-turner!
There are 2 FMC’s (Maggie and Boudi) that are part of the Courting. This is a long trial to prove their worth to a potential mate. As fate would have it, they become roomies and even though they are very different, they find similarities and become companions. Luca and Cae (2 MMCs) have been blessed by Minerva and are competing for the attention of the females in the Courting. There are trials and procedures for both the male and females. There is a TON of intrigue and this book makes you question what you understand and is shrouded in mystery, even in the end. If you enjoy world-building, witches, fantasy, and fate vs free will, you will love this book!
The epic cliffhanger had me flabbergasted and I can’t wait to read what is next when it’s ready.
In all honestly I’m not sure how I feel about this book 🤔
I enjoyed it great read but my mind hasn’t left the spiral of the storyline the theories in my brain and then the book ended with a WTF! 🤯
The book is set on an isolated, mist-veiled island called Asteria, where men on the cusp of adulthood disappear into a "blessing". Every nine years, these witch queens host a deadly courting competition where human women vie for a blessed mate to appease fate. But no one really knows what happens to the men AFTER the courting cause they are not really around it’s only the women 🤔
This book had witches, trials, spice and interesting magic. I really enjoyed the concept surrounding the Courting as well as the actual reality of it with all the trials. I also really liked the multiple POVs as it helped me understand each character better. There are 4 main characters and each one was written with distinct personalities. There were plenty of twists and turns, some of which led to more questions than answers. I was not expecting that ending, which is a cliffhanger. I will be reading the next book as I want to know what happens next.
The premise of the story is very interesting. The world holds a lot a mystery that keeps you reading to find out more. The interlacing character relationships flows fairly nicely. The ending felt pretty abrupt - a cliffhanger for sure - but feels like there should be more (which makes sense as this is the first book of the series). All in all, a good read and interested in seeing what the next book holds for us!
That was... a trip. It was a very slow start, you have to give it at least 150 pages. The threat doesn't feel like much of a threat until late in the story and even then it doesn't seem to loom. There is also a lot that feels unfinished and confusing.
Still, it was fun!
The world was shrouded in mystery and filled with questions. The magic system was unique and thread based.
Luka, or Tar, had to be my favorite character. His emotions felt more feral and real. Boudi was my least favorite. I'm gonna be honest though, I would rather the girls had ended up together.
The ending was weird. Hell, it was all just weird.
I really liked the premise of this book. I enjoyed seeing how the story unfolded. I’m usually not a huge fan of multiple POVs, but I actually liked how it was done here. The different perspectives worked for me and added to the story rather than taking me out of it. For a debut, I think it’s a promising start. I’m interested in seeing what this author comes up with next.
From the first turn of the page I was immediately drawn it. There's witches, courting trials, hidden identities, etc. Each part of the story is told under a different moon. My favorite was the Spirit Moon. I couldn't really get with the magic system, but oh that spice made up for it. I still loved the story.
This was such a fun read, and I would recommend it to anyone who is just getting into romantasy. The world-building was interesting and immersive without ever feeling overwhelming, making it easy to follow while still leaving me curious to learn more. I also really enjoyed the multiple POVs, which added depth to the characters and allowed the story to unfold from different perspectives. The pacing stayed steady throughout, and the ending included some major twists and turns that I did not see coming. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how the story continues!
