Welcome to Book 27 where ALL THE TEARS are in fashion.
Let's start with the fact that Rusafa has to tell Nefert (repeatedly) that "No means NO" which is just great because she really doesn't listen. Meanwhile Nakia fails because...because...:sobs: I can't say it! But damn Juda way to be as extreme as Kail (in a different way).
However Kail sends Juda to oversee his mother in her exile and let me tell you I've never seen a person more willing to do such (the book also helpfully explains that Karkamesh outlasts Anatolia by several centuries--more on that later).
And Kail actually ASKS Yuri to be his wife, instead of everyone demanding it of them. Its a sweet moment.
2020: Of course Rusafa dies! We couldn't have just one person Yuri saves not meet an untimely death because "they owed her." Over 10 yrs since I read this the first time and I still feel this way. Whatever. This is wrapping up and I couldn't be more excited. Super high climax, very dramatic.
On a completely different note, I am jealous of Kail and Yuri's reflecting pool. I want a pool with water lilies with a path through it. Also, no one ever falls off those steps! Even when walking backwards with a hostage! I want that witchcraft in my life! Just imagine all of the twisted ankles and wardrobe changes I could avoid!

STORY 8/10
I LOVE HISTORY! This manga made me love it more. It’s like hitting 2 birds with one stone—-I was both entertained and imparted with great historical facts, especially about the Hittie Empire and Egypt.
I was a bit reluctant, at first, to read this manga. First, because it’s a bit old. I stay away from 2000 below mangas. I prefer modern art in terms of manga. But I gave this manga a try and you know what? I didn’t regret it one bit.
I enjoyed reading each page and I can’t wait to turn the page just to find out what will happen next. The plot is incredible. It was like the mangaka personally put Yuri in ancient history. I mean, it’s like she belong there.
While reading, it reminded me of “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu. Some of the techniques written there were practiced in the manga. Remember what Yuri did when she became the leader of Kai’s army on the west part of his empire while he fought the Egyptians? Well, Yuri followed what Sun Tzu said, “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle” She gathered information about the general thus to make the story short won the battle without breaking a sweat. AND IT WAS AWESOME! Who run the world?! GIRLS! AHAHAHAHA.
Anyway, the manga was long and I was already itching to finish it. I want the Queen Dowager dead. Some parts were boring for me. But still I did had fun reading the manga.
I was bit dumb-founded when she was appointed commander-in-chief one second then she became the damsel in distress the next second. Like wth?!
I just wish the mangaka made a separate story for Prince Judah and Princess Alexandria.
ART 8/10
Because I really like the story I didn’t care anymore if the art was not modern. I mean, it was right for the genre and the manga.
I also like the scenery and how the castles and rooms were drawn. It was vivid. I salute the mangaka for the awesome job!
The facial expressions of the characters were great too. It really did show what the characters should be feeling in a particular scene. And before I forget, the funny scenes were spectacular! It made me laugh so hard.
CHARACTERS 9/10
This is one of the mangas that I will never forget. One, because of the strong female lead. Most of the mangas nowadays, always feature lame, weak and stupid heroines. I’m tired off this stereotypical shits. Yuri was a great character. She was made to be a leader. I can’t blame the guys falling for her. She thinks differently from the women of their era. She’s like a breath of fresh air.
Kail was perfect for Yuri. They were made for each other. I want leaders like them. If they were real people I will without a doubt follow their every command because they earned it.
The aides were useful. They were not only supporting characters, they were important characters. They were necessary in the manga not just for display.
The character, Queen Nakia, was the best villain I’ve ever encountered. Her desire for her son to be king came from a deep reason. She was scared and alone and the only thing that will help her survive was to gain power.
MY FEELINGS 7/10
This manga made me excited for the next scenes to come. It made me squirm on my seat. It made me think with the protagonists on how to win the upcoming battles. It made me think in advance on how will Yuri escape the evil clutches of Queen Nakia. In short, it stimulated every cell in my brain. It is at the same time knowledgeable and entertaining.
I’m sure I’ll read this manga a lot of times and it will never stop making me feel these emotions I felt the first time I read it.
You will never regret every second reading this manga. What are you waiting for? If you skip this one I’m sure you’ll miss 1/3 of of your life.
i love how it has "published oct. 13, 2009." like it's already happened! can't wait for this book! i think i might have drooled a bit.
this was so much better than the last several books. it brought back the quality that made it so addictive at the beginning of the series. now, i get to look forward to the last book instead of feeling like i needed to get it to finish off the series.
i'm so glad yuri got the question popped to her. it was nice to see. i would laugh if she said no, or ask if she really had a choice in the matter. haha. anyway- i thought kail's sister was suppose to have awesome powers. oh well, it was neat that she was able to pinpoint nakia like that.

WHAT!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT *heartbreak* I am not happy about this development... not at all.
Despite that, this volume did have me on the edge of my seat! Though, seems like the shenanigans have finally come to pass and Yuri and Kail should be able to move forward together now. Awww ♥
This series comes to a great conclusion. All together it is a fabulous historical fiction read that keeps the reader guessing and turning pages until the very end!
I found this series on a mere coincidence but it quickly became one of my all time favourites. I read the entire series in 1.5-2 days. It was truly wonderful and a joy to experience.
Red River is my favorite manga series, hands down. Not only is the art incredible, the storyline and depth that the author goes into to describe the time period and history (accurately, as far as I can tell!) and the way they weave that history into this fantastic romantic epic keeps me coming back to read again and again.
Yuri is probably my favorite story heroine; the way her maturity grows through the series is realistic and powerful, and she grows into a woman that deserves the story she lived.
This series has a LOT of explicit content and comes with some trigger warnings (SA, abuse, mind control, gore and war, and mutilation, among others) so if that’s not your thing, I highly suggest putting it back on the shelf or reading with caution.
Overall, 5 out of 5, probably will be picking up Vol 1 from the library again once my current stack is done!
Ok. Good at Princess Alexandra scenes & the climax of Nakia's threat to Yuri & King Kail. Also like Nakia's punishment & Kail putting Prince Juda in charge of Karukemishu where he can keep an eye on Nakia, to ensure she doesn't scheme her way out of her punishment. (The unspoken words that if Nakia does scheme her way out of her punishment then her son will be blamed & seen unfit to be Mayor, & if unfit then how can he be King as she so desperately want him to be, even though he forfeited his right to the throne)
4.5- the rating is for a whole series (28 is really just bonus stories. so I'm putting the series rating here instead). Yuri is so cool, I love her endlessly.
I honestly had not remembered that Nakia stuck around for the whole damn series. Daily life in the Hittite empire, with visits from Ramses and Nefert every so often, would have been more than enough for me.
Overall Rating: 2..../10 I re-read from teenager to grown up. Not the best idea...
This may be my third re-read of this series. I am pretty sure I read it twice in the first two years of it's release. I was young, I loved it. It was romantic. But after reading it this year (maybe +15 years later....), I was wrong. I just saw wrong turns, within wrong turns. Maybe as an adult, you see things differently.
If you,ve read a manga or book during your early years and end up reading them much later in life, you may end up like me- loving a series in the past and ruining it as the adult in you laughs for once enjoying them... :(
Do I recommend this: Unless you are under the age of 20 honestly...
