Just re-read this novel about twenty years after first reading it. Thought I might have enjoyed it back then because of the 'foolishness of youth' and being young and angry...
I had forgotten some of the plot twists and also just how challenging the style is - in my old age I have mellowed and gotten used to smoother, more traditional (yes more boring) writing and it was as refreshing now as it was back then to read something with a pace that drags you along at an alarming rate with a staccato rhythm and fat-free style. not for everyone, there are some shocking bits in terms of sex and violence, but if you remind yourself, hey it's just a story, and latch onto the dark and irreverent humour (more satire, I suppose) then you find yourself totally sucked in.
Not an easy read, but not a boring one by any means. A really fresh twist on crime fiction with a throback punk style that I had forgotten about, but now want more - think Bukowski with a plot, in fact I am sure the character of the writer must have been based on Bukowski. After reading 'Scraps' it feels like I have just watched a DVD instead of reading text....
