The Ranchers: A Modern Family’s Inspiring Odyssey

Rate this book
Jerry Johnston is a widower and a modern day cattle rancher in Montana. When his wife died at a young age, he felt responsible and it ended his relationship with God and severely damaged relations with his three children. Embittered for many years thereafter, he gives no quarter and accepts none.

He wants his children to stay and help on the family ranch but they go off to Chicago and Washington D.C. and Iraq and California to get away. Can anything bring them home?

Then, Jerry meets a woman who changes his life in ways he wouldn’t have thought possible. How will he handle love the second time around? How will his children react?

This is a story of loss and redemption, of hate and love, of the American way, that is wonderfully written with rich characters.

Set in the gorgeous Rocky Mountains, The Ranchers will not just entertain you, it will deeply satisfy you and give you new understanding about life, love and God.

About the author

Art Martin

1 book
Art Martin grew up in Chicago and was a business executive with several major corporations until he retired and moved to the West where the romantic dreamer in him felt he should have always been. He lives near Aspen, Colorado on a small ranch with his wife and horses.

He wrote his first novel just to see what writing a book would be like. Years before, when he was in broadcasting, he had been asked to act in a play in the local community theater. He did it to learn what acting was all about and he learned that acting was harder than it looked. Same thing with writing.

He has an undergraduate degree in Communication Arts (University of Notre Dame) and a graduate degree in Business (University of Chicago) but nothing beats learning by doing. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1971 to 1979 during which time he learned how much we owe to all those who have served our country.

He and his wife have traveled much of the world but their hearts are in the Mountain West. For him, it’s a spiritual place, more than an oasis, not quite heaven. Being closer to the end than the beginning, being able to ponder and pray about one’s relationship to the divine is just that much easier when the terrestrial surroundings are inspirational.

He has spoken and lectured at numerous business gatherings and conferences.

It's a great farming story of estrangement and reconciliation when the father changes his heart and mind. There are no twists or turns. It is very predictable and everything turns out happily. If you like that kind of story, this fiction story has that happy ending. The problem is real life is usually not that clear cut. This story depends on the one making the problem recognizing it and changing drastically. In my experience, that didn't happen so maybe I am somewhat jaded.
