*Second Edition Small-town Deputy Sheriff A.J. “Jesse” Prieo led a comfortable life with his wife and daughter by his side. All that changed in an instant when genetically engineered creatures—terrifyingly similar to velociraptors—were set loose on an unsuspecting world.
In the post-apocalyptic aftermath, pockets of civilization endure, but they are few and far between.
Helped by a sword-wielding former radical, a woman of shifting loyalties, and a mysterious lost child, Jesse must do whatever it takes to lay his ghosts to rest and survive long enough to uncover the twisted secrets behind the Raptor Apocalypse.
STEVE R. YEAGER is a part-time author who lives in a secret underground lair deep inside a volcano protected by laser-wielding raptors and scythe-wielding unicorns.
First book and already this level? Hear the sound of me gnawing my desk into a pile of envy-shavings.
For fans of the straightforward three-dimensional adventures of James Herbert and Graham Masterton. Enjoy the shades of Koontz for that special aftertaste.
This is a great end-of-the-world yarn, without, you will be relieved to know, any vampires, or living-dead lurchers.Just sinister raptors who will snap your neck in half! Arrr!
Unpretentious and punchy, yet belonging to the upper shelf of craftsmanship, this is a story of with one foot in the 1980’s and one foot in the postmodernist now. Guns fire, ninja swords flash, gene-vat raptors’ guts are spilled, survivors huddle first into refugee camps, and when these are overrun - into other groups and sects.
While I like my slo-mo prose fetishists Peter Straub, Clive Barker, and Ramsey Campbell, 90% of the time I prefer fast adventures where you get to know the protagonists and the ramifications of the adventure by the end of chapter one - as is the case with Chicken Nuggets.
This book, which appears to be the first volume of a longer story-arc (thank you for not ending this on a cliff-hanger, Mr. Yeager), is the story of Jesse the former lawman, Cory the former radical, Eve the former cultist, and Kate the traumatized survivor.
Mad Max meets I Am Legend meets Jurassic Park meets Robert McCammon on speed.
Like me, have you gotten tired of all the run of the mill post-apocalyptic fiction flooding the market? I mean come on, really, how many stories can be told about viral outbreaks and zombies?
If you answered yes, but still love reading about the world going to shit, then you're in for a treat. Mr. Yeager now brings us something that at first glance, seems like it should have been made into a campy 80s B-movie horror flick, like attack of the giant __fill in the blank___. In this case, he gives us chicken/"dino"-raptor hybrids. But that's where the cheesiness ends.
I initially went into reading this book, thinking it'd be a light entertaining read. What I quickly found though was a heart wrenching tale about a man who's lost everything, and yet still keeps on living. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll leave it at that.
I'm glad that this is only the first book in a series, because it left me wanting more. I can't wait for the sequel.
How can you not love this?? End of the world as we know it but with Raptors instead of a virus or Zombies!! It's deliciously dark, yet oodles of fun. Anything with dinosaurs in it and I'm sold ;) Lol.
Anyway, the plot of this isn't hard to understand... genetically modified things escape, breed like crazy, eats humans, end of the world as we know it! It sounds like a typical, old style, campy, B-Movie plot, and while it kind of is, it's also so much more. This story has heart and will keep you gripped till the very end. It's a unique take on the end of the world but is also a tale of hope, of survival against the odds and of realising your mistakes.
Character wise, this follows some very different characters, all of whom were well written and developed, and I have to say that I loved them all, especially the raptors ;) Deputy Sheriff Jesse is just a normal guy trying to survive a horrible world. Cory was intriguing. He wields his Katana expertly and isn't afraid to battle the beasts, but what's his story? Then we have the mysterious little girl. Who is she??
In all, this was a pleasant surprise and one I ended up devouring. It's bloody, it's dark, but it's such a great read that you will have a hard time putting it down. I really need book 2 to see what happens! Thoroughly enjoyable and I highly recommend it!!
Alex Lankford seems to be a new narrator and it showed a bit. He did a great job for his first time, but I felt like he needs a little work with his tones and cadences. He needs to know when to amp up the tension and when to slow it down, but I'm sure that will come with experience.
I was voluntarily provided this free copy by the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.
Jesse the lawman, Cory the radical, and Evelyn the believer find themselves thrust into a world where science has created a dino-chicken hybrid. Through rapid reproduction and a readily available food supply, these 'raptors' quickly stake out a dominant position in the food-chain.
Although the book may sound quite hokie, it was actually a pretty good read. I was pleasantly surprised!
Apocalyptic with a dash of Jurassic Park. It was a goodread. Fast passed and never boring. The only thing bad about it is i think it needs a second book. I am not sure if i missed it or if it's just not there. But i did not learn enough about what Cory is doing.
You can't help but have certain expectations when you buy a book called Raptor Apocalypse. I was expecting plenty of action involving raptors, and there is a lot of that in the second half, though it takes a while to get there. The book takes itself more seriously than I anticipated, as well: indeed, it's very bleak and depressing throughout. It uses various familiar tropes from end-of-the-world stories; sometimes, it might as well be a zombie apocalypse story. I also didn't warm to the main characters, who only started becoming likeable when they came together towards the end. I was mildly curious enough about the loose ends to check out the rest of the series at some point in the future, but I'm not in any rush.
The story was to much oddity with idea that can’t belief that a group of people who created an army of dinosaur couldn’t divese a plan that works quicker. An really there are a lot of plot holes like how the military was defeated they could ran the country for years from underground military stations or from the air in a plane(air force 1). Also how could the bad guys stop every group from developing a biological weapons has there are hundreds of nations and companies that could have pick up the work to kill the raptors.
Interesting hypothesis. Good action. A little slow at times, but the guessing makes one want to know what comes next. Part of understanding the story comes from innuendos that keep you guessing as to how the creatures came into being, what each character's role is in the story, and how everything will end. This is a good lead-in to the next part in the series.
The character development in this book was great. I cared about the characters very quickly and wanted to keep reading to see what happened. I was rooting for them the whole book. Excited to read the second book.
Our main protagonist Jessie who had been a Deputy Sheriff struggles to survive after personal loss against the chick…err raptors and the usual apocalypse fare; raiders, religious fanatics, political zealots, and the customary female to be rescued. Protagonist two Cory, a katana-wielding warrior makes his way cross-country to another compound to check for survivors detailing the people, creatures, and dangers he encounters. Character development and/or background may leave something to be desired, but the story pushes on. Early on there are indications of global overpopulation, bio-engineered food sources, and a genetic engineering accident which is the where, why and how of the Raptors. The story is dark and interesting if somewhat long winded at times; you have to stay with it. When I saw this book I thought Oh My THIS will be hilarious. I have never been so glad to be wrong!! This book is a dark look at a world in which we are no longer the top of the food chain. Well written, with characters you sometimes want to smack. It is a fun read, especially if you like either dinosaurs or apocalyptic horror. A solid 4 stars.
My first thought on this book was, if it were a movie, it would be a cheezy 80's B-Movie. Nothing could be further from the truth. This was a well written, fast pace, roller coaster of mayhem and emotion. What I loved the most, was the author's instinct to move from one character to another at the perfect moment to leave you wanting more. Jesse was my favorite character and his story will tug at your heart strings. This isn't just an apocolypse story, it is a search for truth, integrity, and Chicken Nuggets! I look forward to the next installment.
Somebody decided that it would be a good idea to create a raptor..white ones. When I first started reading..I thought it was dumb and I didn't like it. I returned to finish the book and instantly liked the characters of Jesse and Cory. Through each man's perceptions of living in a destroyed world and both wanting to eradicate the monsters who took so much from them. I also think they are pretty bad-ass ;) Esp Cory with his Katana! You should see him in a fight! So after everyone finds each other, I really enjoyed reading the story and now I'm onto book 2....
This was good, I liked the different take on the apocalypse, raptors, of all things, they're mean and vicious little bastards...definitely going to have to keep reading, on to the next one.
