Lauren Ivers should be home, reading and eating take-out. Or in her lab, working on new ideas in post-quantum theory. Instead, she’s on the run with the bodyguard she didn’t know she had in a desperate bid to get off-planet before she becomes a casualty in an intergalactic war. She’s sure it’s just the adrenaline that has her reacting to her oversized protector with smart-mouthed replies and a full-bodied zing she wills herself to ignore. Hakon sidUlfr, a wolf-shifter from another world, and Lauren’s covert bodyguard, is determined to keep her safe from the Axis aliens hunting her. Not because she’s a duty, but because there’s something about her that calls to all his primitive and protective instincts. It’s a distraction he can’t afford as he works to sneak a single, small human across unfamiliar terrain. When Hakon is injured, Lauren realizes that while he was protecting her body, she should have been protecting her heart.
Short version: Sela Carsen is an award-winning author of paranormal and sci-fi romance -- with or without sex and dead bodies. Your pick. She maintains a permanent nerd-on for fairytales and mythology, and openly hoards reference books about obscure folklore. Born a wanderer, she and her family have finally settled in the Midwest. Until they move again, at least.
Long and rambly, but funnier version: In addition to writing, I’m a wife to a Darn Near Perfect Husband and mom to Two Great Kids. They used to be the Monkey children, but they seem to have settled down a bit. (That’s going to come back and bite me on the butt as soon as you read this!)
I have a BA in French (utterly useless, but fun at parties) and another BA in Communication. While I was getting the Communication degree, I wrote for my alumni magazine, dipped my feet into advertising, took want ads at the local paper and even wrote obituaries. I was also a reporter at a small-town daily, but soon realized I didn’t have a true journalist’s instinct.
After that, I was busy being married and having children, but when my youngest was about a year and half old, I was standing in the shower when a scene popped into my head. Why does that always happen when you’re in the shower and you can’t get a pen and paper? Anyway, I got the soap out of my eyes, dried off and headed straight for the computer where I wrote it all down.
And boy, did it stink. Whew!
I’d been reading romance novels for years so I figured I should be able to write one, right?
Are you done laughing? Let me know when you’re finished.
Ok, then. It took about twenty false starts and a work I now call The-Regency-That-Wouldn’t-Die before I finally got disgusted with myself and started writing this funny little scene in a Louisiana cemetery. That little scene became Not Quite Dead and it’s the first manuscript I ever finished. After much angst and rewriting on my part, I eventually sold it to Samhain Publishing, who released it in August 2006.
Since then, I’ve placed several other stories, but that first one will always be special to me.

Sci-fi romance combined with wolf shifters? Sign me up! I really enjoyed A WOLF TO WATCH OVER ME and I can't wait to read the rest of the series and learn more about this world. It's the distant future and Earth has colonized other planets, drawing the attention of alien species. After a brutal war with the alien Cancri Axis, Earth now has an alliance with the Fenrir Army, wolf shifters from another world. When scientist Lauren Ivers is almost kidnapped for her research she's rescued by Hakon sidUlfr, the Fenrir bodyguard she didn't even know her company had hired. Now Lauren and Hakon are on the run from her enemies as they attempt to reach Hakon's pack ship.
I absolutely loved the combination of science fiction and wolf shifters and I wish this had been longer so I could learn more. A brief overview of the war and the species involved is all readers get and while it's enough to understand the background of this short story it also left me wanting more. The action starts right from the first chapter and I was sucked into Lauren and Hakon's escape.
As short and action packed as this is, you still get a great idea of Lauren and Hakon as characters. Lauren was super smart and a touch sarcastic. She comes from a wealthy and prominent political family but she has no desire to bow to her family's desires for her to give up her career and get married to someone they approve of. She's shocked when she first encounters Hakon in his vargulf form (9 foot tall, hulking werewolf) but she's not afraid of him. Hakon is strong, brutal, and willing to do anything to protect Lauren, especially when he realizes she's his mate. Hakon gave us all the "touch her and die" vibes for those that like possessive alpha heroes. The steam level for A WOLF TO WATCH OVER ME is very low, only a kiss, but considering the plot spans just a few hours and Lauren and Hakon are strangers, it fits the overall story.
Short and sweet. I enjoyed both Lauren and Hakon. I might have enjoyed it more had it been longer and more fleshed out. But, how often can you say this: Werewolves from outer space! Currently free from Amazon.
The world building was excellent. The descriptive prose set time and place excellently. For the time that I was reading, I was totally immersed in the story and plot.
I loved the way that Ms. Carsen wrote. It was very descriptive and I felt I was truly there living the scene through the eyes of the heroine. There are few books I have read that have really brought me into the scene. It is like a lovely painting where you can place yourself in the picture. The story was inventive, clear, precise and wove a lovely lyrical story that ,as I have mentioned, was very believable. It was way too short and I wish she had had time to go into more detail of the storyline. But truly enjoyed what I did read. Buy the book and emerse yourself as I did. You won't regret it.
This was a quick read, and while "Mine" made a serious appearance, the author did not try to cram the whole relationship in to a short story. Liked this one a lot, and would love to see more of the characters - who wouldn't love the werewolf from out of space ;-)
Series: Wolves of Fenrir #1 Rating: 4 stars - It was really good
This was a very short book but it was so great! I couldn’t resist picking this up when I saw it was a sci-fi romance but with wolf shifters. The world building is a bit sparse since it is so short but we do know that Earth has colonized other planets, drawing the attention of alien species and a war with the alien Cancri Axis happened. Earth is now allied with the Fenrir Army and wolf Hakon SidUlfir has been tasked with being Lauren Ivers bodyguard.
This was a very short, action packed story that I really wish was longer. Lauren and Hakon had a fated mates/instant love story that was enjoyable, even if we didn’t get to see a lot of build up or steam between them. Lauren was a smart woman who was also a bit sarcastic and I loved that she was never afraid of Hakon. Hakon is protective of her from the beginning and he had the whole “touch her and die” vibes, which I like. Overall, this may have been short, but it was really enjoyable and I will be reading the next story now.
What a wonderful and delightfully romantic sci-fi tale! I was not sure what to expect, but I am impressed. I only wish the story had been a full-length novel. The couple's chemistry was so well done as to make them a fascinating pair. A wolf from outer space is awesome, again I really wish it had been longer.
This was very ok. Lauren is a scientist and from a political family. Our Hero is hired to protect her. He senses her as his Mate and then he wants to extra protect her.
Very short, pretty decent characters, awkward declarations of affection.
What a wonderful and delightfully romantic sci-fi tale! I was not sure what to expect, but I am suitable impressed. I only wish the story had been a full length novel. The couple's chemistry was so well done as to make them a fascinating pair. Well done!
it's a good, quick, read that is very enjoyable. I would hope the author intends on fleshing this out and creating some full length novels from it. I would automatically buy them. I only gave it four stars because it left me wanting so much more and if a full length novels arrives I want to be able to rate it better.
In the meantime, I intend to check out her other work.
Full of fast-paced action scenes and steamy insta-love feelings, this first installment of the Wolves of Frenrir is entertaining and only disappoints by its shortness. I really wanted to read more about those two intriguing characters. They will make an appearance in the next books, but it's just not the same...
Really liked the characters from the get go and the story. Hakon a Fenrir was an alpha yum and Lauren was uber smart scientist he was protecting even though at first. Great and and they have chemistry. i just really wish it was longer and I would have given it a 5.
Lauren is a physicist with a price on her head....so her company hires Hakon ( who is also a shifter) to guard her. When she gets attacked, he is there to rescue her, but she is not sure if he is a good guy or a bad guy. Nice novella, quick enjoyable read.
