Prey on Her

Rate this book
Caught between forbidden desire and something far darker stalking the halls…

After my father’s death, I’m left with nothing—no home, no family, no one to belong to. At his funeral, the last person I expect to notice me is his ex–best friend, Blake.

Older, sharp-eyed, and carrying secrets I can almost taste on his lips, he offers me a place to stay.

That’s how I end up at Windridge Hall—his partially renovated hotel sitting high in the mountains.

I thought I’d found safety. Instead, I found them.

Because his son, Levi, lives there, too. Younger, reckless, with the same hungry gaze his father wears. Between the two of them, I feel trapped in a dangerous gravity, tugged one way, then the other. I shouldn’t want either of them, but the air crackles with tension whenever they’re near.

But Windridge isn’t only filled with temptation. It’s filled with shadows. Cold spots stalk the corridors. Sometimes I swear I feel eyes on me. Then the gifts start appearing—stick dolls, carefully placed on my pillow and in dark corners of the house.
It makes me are we not the only ones here?

They tell me that once the first snow falls, the mountain road will be impassable.

The question is… when the storm comes, will I still be here—and who will I belong to?

Marissa is one of my all time favourite authors and when she announced this series I could not wait to get my hands on it! And oh wow it did not disappoint! It gave me Immoral/primal limits/beauty and the beast/haunted house gothic vibes and I could not read it fast enough! I was hooked from the start (hello age gap, dads best friend tropes 😍)

I found it easy to really empathise with Aspen, the fmc, at only 18 years old she’s already been through so much - her sister going missing and mother taking her own life, then nursing her father through his final months, she’s alone, has nowhere to live and her boyfriend is a waste of space, she agrees to the offer of a safe place to stay from her father’s ex best friend who she hasn’t seen since she was a child, and just wants to find her feet and her place in the world.

Blake, the first mmc we meet initially comes across as the concerned and caring family friend who has known Aspen since she was little and regrets not reconnecting with his friend when he could. But there’s so much more to him than we initially see, and we see that he’s keeping secrets and has an ulterior motive for helping her that it first appeared. He’s old enough to be her dad but the chemistry and attraction between them is palpable and the forbidden/taboo nature of their attraction is addictive.

Then we meet Levi, Blake’s son, he’s not outwardly happy about Aspen’s arrival at Windridge Hall despite being drawn to her. He comes across as mean, wild and dangerous, and he and Aspen do not get along. But we come to see a slightly softer side to him as he becomes more and more drawn to Aspen.

But there’s something more to Windridge Hall, there’s something or someone watching Aspen, leaving her little gifts, there unexplainable cold patches, weird noises and an innate eeriness in the building.

And then there’s Dov… 😮‍💨

I am absolutely hooked with this story, I cannot wait for book 2, the cliffhanger 🤯 for the last 20% of the book I was tentatively reading because I knew a cliffhanger was coming, the end was nigh and I was not ready to leave it there 🤯🙈 Marissa, I have a love hate relationship with your cliffhangers, I need the rest of this trilogy immediately 😂 I’m very thankful that you planned them for a quick release and I don’t have to wait too much longer!

A wonderful gothic, why choose, age gap, taboo, mystery/thriller/gothic horror vibes, story, that gives immoral/primal limits (previous series’ by Marissa) and beauty and the beast vibes. If you like forbidden/taboo why chooses with tension, mystery, depth and deliciously spicy smexy scenes then you need to read Prey on Her!

At her father's funeral, Aspen reconnects with an old friend of her father's. One who had fallen out with him, and they hadn't spoken for years. Aspen fondly remembers her time with Blake when he came to their home. She was a child then, but now she is an 18-year-old woman—one who still has a secret crush on him.

Blake can't believe that Aspen has turned into this beautiful woman; last time her saw her, she was just a child. He offers her a home, somewhere she can lay her head until she gets on her feet. But his home is in the mountains, off the beaten track, a renovation project of Windridge Hall, which was a very large hotel in its heyday. But his offer is also a plus for him if he can get her to stay, especially during the winter months, when the property gets cut off. She is a temptress, one who will hopefully keep them warm during the cold spell.

Levi, his son, has antisocial behavior. He speaks without thinking and can be very forward and harsh. He likes outdoor pursuits, especially hunting and fishing. His kink is primal play, the hunt, the pursuit of his 'prey', and even though he may not like Aspen, she is ideal for his needs. But will he scare her off before the winter takes her only means of escape?

Dov tries to keep his distance; he has control and impulse issues that can go very wrong, very quickly. But he is drawn to Aspen like a moth to a flame. But does she know that he exists?

Aspen is a vulnerable woman who is grieving the loss of her father. She needs to feel part of something, to be seen and heard. So she jumps at the chance to be with someone she feels safe with. But is she really? Blake knows the age gap could be a problem, but he felt something towards her as soon as he laid eyes on her again. But the lies and deceit strain Aspen. She may have feelings and issues with the men of the hall, but can she ever trust what they say or do?.

Arc Review

Let’s start with Marissa’s extended welcome note and also clarifying trigger awareness.

Moving along, we are delving into Windridge Hall, a place needing restoration but also hidden within. A slow and steady start. The foundations are being laid for the unexpected. An understanding of the - why of what is coming after.

The further you read, the dubious the setting is becoming. There will be no turning back 🤫. Depravity at its best. The title itself has you in its clutches.
This had so many avenues of suspense. It made you question each character and what was to be expected. Will you too question each character? How does the blurb question your judgement of them‘? Enthralling is what this is.

Climatic ending. Ohh, why do great authors do this? Yep, to keep you on your toes with anticipation of what is next. In understanding Marissa, she is an author who writes best in trilogies. eg : Verona falls series. This too is demanding and graphic. You will be led into Blake’s life with his-sons and their winter prey - Aspen.

Do not skip any -ages as each line delves into the understanding of the characters.

* secrets
* degradation
* mental illness
* age gap
* sexually demanding

I was honestly expecting more from this one. But it really didn’t impress me as much different than a slew of other “dark” and “taboo” romances out there.

A young girl, down on her luck and with nowhere to go, is given shelter by an older man. She winds up in a remote location and, despite her concerns, decides to stay because she hasn’t any other options. The man’s son shows up, and he’s a jerk. But somehow she finds herself attracted to both men. There are weird things happening in the house, rooms she isn’t allowed to enter, sounds that can’t be explained. Strange dreams. Or are they?

I don’t mean to knock the book. The author has a good writing style and the story, for what it is, is written just fine. I’m just a little burned out on books that promise so much and then return so very little.

While this book is okay, I can also give you examples of a dozen others that fit the same mold. I keep hoping for something that will truly surprise or delight me, but I haven’t found a book that lives up to its blurb in quite a while.

Others are sure to like this one, but I’ve just read too many similar books to find it worth continuing into book two.

A brilliantly dark why-choose forbidden romance

You can't help but feel sorry for 18-year-old Aspen when she's on her own at her father's funeral, having lost her sister and mother at an early age. The one face she's hoping to see is that of her father's best friend (who she'd had a secret crush on) who she hasn't seen for 6 years. When he catches up with her afterwards, he's sorry to hear she doesn't really have anywhere to live and offers a room at the hotel he's renovating with his son, Levi. And though he's her father's age you can sense the chemistry and attraction between them from the start but you get the sense that he has ulterior reasons for inviting her up to their mountain retreat.

Then she meets Levi who makes it clear that he doesn't want her there, despite how he's drawn to her. Levi's antisocial and speaks his mind without thinking preferring outdoor pursuits like hunting and fishing, with a desire for primal play; and it's great to see him slowly soften in his feelings towards Aspen who he calls his Little Fox.

And there's something/someone else at Windridge Hall who's watching over her, leaving little gifts and looking forward to being able to meet her properly… soon. And when the snow falls they'll all be trapped together.

"You don't want to be stuck here when we get snowed in. Things get kind of crazy."

A well written dark story full with an age-gap forbidden romance, why-choose (father's best friend and his son), great chemistry between the characters, obsession, stalking, tension, intrigue, steam, some brilliant twists and an edge-of-you-seat cliff hanger. I love Marissa's stories and this one doesn't disappoint, would strongly recommend and I can't wait to start the second in this series "Fear Me Not".

PREY ON HER has darkly stirring elements, touches of mystery, a compelling narrative, and characters that will certainly capture your interest. Aspen’s dependency and insecurity make her the perfect foil for the men of Windridge Hall. Given her age and circumstances, her decisions and her almost too-easy acceptance of the situation are understandable. On the other hand, her darker desires and willing, consensual acts of intimacy seem more appropriate for an older, more experienced person, which presents a bit of a paradox. The storyline is intriguing, hinting at the possibility of something darker in their past and introducing the hotel’s potential paranormal aspects that I imagine will be explored further in the upcoming books. As the first of a trilogy, it ends in a cliffhanger, both in the physical action that occurs and in the events leading up to it, leaving you eager for what’s next for Aspen and the men of Windridge Hall.

Prey On Her by Marissa Farrar is definitely a dark story. Not sure I would call it a romance yet. It ends on a cliffhanger. So we’ll see.
Aspen has lost her father to cancer and is left destitute. Her father’s former friend has offered to let her come stay with him at the hotel he is renovating. His hotel is pretty remote and he has secrets. One being that he wants her to be his and his sons’entertainment when they get snowed in. Since Aspen is just 18, her naïveté can be excused, but in her desperation to be wanted and have a home so she continues to overlook Blake’s lies is hard to take.
The characters are interesting. The plot draws you in. There is more to learn and resolve in the next book. Hopefully, Aspen will develop more independence and self reliance in the next book. Definitely a book worth reading, but not the most likable characters at this point.

REVIEW
Aspen had lost her sister, then became a caregiver for her dying father.
When he passes, however, it leaves her with nothing, not even her home.
At the funeral, a man from her father's past is there...

Blake offers her a lifeline, and although he is older, she is in lust with him from the get-go. But things are not always what they seem.

He offers her a safe haven in an old hotel he is rebuilding; he seems to have forgotten to mention his two sons. In a place that has no way out, and she soon will find out.

And the hotel... Well, it's not what it seems by a long shot!

This is the beginning...I can not wait to see what comes next.
We get dark, Creep Factor, and suspense...
Loved it!

Wow!! This book was so much more than I expected! I loved every minute of it too!
I was on the edge of my seat pretty much the whole way through. I kept wondering what was coming next? Is there ghosts? What can she trust?
This book was filled with mystery, secrets, suspense, drama, lots ot tension, and spice.
It feels like we've barely scratched the surface on the secrets and mystery of the story.
That cliffhanger wasn't cool. I'm now left wondering what's gonna happen next. What I do know, is that I definitely need answers!!
I think this was a fantastic book! I can't wait for the next one!!

🔥 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Prey on Her was sooo juicy and spicy! 🌶️😂 Aspen is definitely my type of girl. I loved her energy and how bold she was throughout the book.

And listen… if I ever get stuck in some old hotel, I’m just saying, I better get the same setup with a sexy father and his two sons because apparently that is where the plot starts plotting 😭😂

This book was messy, hot, entertaining, and had me hooked. I already know I need the next book because I am not done with these people at all. I can’t wait to see what happens next! 📚🔥

Slowly Sucks You In
Aspen’s father has just died, she doesn’t have a support system, her boyfriend is lame, so when her father’s former best friend offers her a coffee, and then a place to stay, she easily agrees. This set up sounds super-predatory, but the story walks a delicate balance between being innocent and nefarious. This story was like quicksand - you’re slowly sinking further and further in, just like Aspen, and by the time the danger is recognized, you’re in well over your head. I was absolutely engrossed and entranced - what a grinning read.

This was an edge of your seat type of book. Blake and Aspen know each other previously. Blake cannot believe the woman that Aspen has become. Darkly entertaining book, one that truly fascinated me because of Blake and Aspen and how they are with each other. Made for each other in my opinion, even though there is a wide age gap. Fantastic book.

I had a great time with this book 🖤. The tension & chemistry between the fmc and her dad's bestie and then enter his son into the chat... and things start to get chaotic in the best way. But who is haunting the hotel? Such a fun, spicy read ❤️

A pretty solid read! The mysteries and secrets kept me hooked.

However, I would have enjoyed the story more if the MMC’s didn’t force themselves onto her and act so immature.

Nonetheless, I’m intrigued to see what will happen between the dynamic of the characters after that ending.

Aspen thought Windridge Hall would be a haven, somewhere she could belong. A place to find herself, get over her grief. What she finds with Blake, Levi and Dov is anything but. But she still won’t leave, not that they’d let her!

Aspen loses her father and Blake jer dad's nest friend takes her in and brings her back to his home. However he has a reason and it isn't just to be nice. He and his son Levi have plans for her but there is another unexpected twist in this story. Definitely typical Marissa.

Hmm slow start but wow

Slow to start. Not very spicy. I don't like blake much. He's a wolf in sheep's clothing. I don't like the power dynamic. Im sure the next book will get more into Levi and his primal thoughts and Blake and his dominant actions.
