John P. Logsdon is a former game designer, producer, and software engineer who shamelessly digs into the deep recesses of his mind to bring forth oddball characters and hilarious plots. He writes primarily in fantasy, urban fantasy, and science fiction, but he's also dabbled in cozy mystery from time to time. To see John's vast library of laughs, visit www.johnplogsdon.com.
The first novel-length story in Logsdon's Platoon F universe is an improvement in some ways and more of the same in others.
The improvements are that it's a full length novel, meaning that he has to give the plot time to develop. In this case the crew of the Reluctant leaves the serves of the Segnal Space Marine Corps and finds employment with a mysterious group called the Overseers whose primary goal is to destroy any civilization that begins to develop advanced technology that the Overseers deem a potential threat. With that as a decent premise, the Reluctant is tagged with sabotaging an alien planet's nascent discovery of warp technology.
As a basic plot, it's essentially Terminator 2/Star Trek First Contact but without time travel and it's perfectly fine. The Reluctant's crew members must all go in various stages of undercover work (including genetic modification) to infiltrate and ultimately sabotage the new technology before it becomes operational.
The longer form forces the story to develop a bit more naturally and also forces Logsdon to space out, at least a little, the juvenile dick jokes. The dumb humor is still there, but it's not as omnipresent and therefore exhaustingly annoying. The longer format also forces Logsdon to develop his characters a bit more--and yes, while they are almost entirely single-note walking sex jokes, they at least TRY to develop a second dimension to their personalities.
Overall, a decent progression from the first novellas. Still needs work, but it's enjoyable to watch the development.
Use it was an okay read but that was the problem. It was just okay. There just wasn't the spark that there was in the earlier books and it just felt more of the same. Capture, forced to act for someone else, succeed and then celebrate. Why couldn't they have "gone where no man has gone before" and acted on their own initiative? As it was it just felt flat and from enjoying the series I now feel it would be a good place to stop before it ruined the earlier books for me. Shame!
Have read many reviews of different books that give outline of the story, but this is Logsdon and t it's not really something one could do when it's {Terry} Pratchett meets {Douglas} Adams meets Monty Python meets Red Dwarf meets Star Trek meets Doctor Who meets Twilight Zone/Outer Limits/Night Gallery.... Realized at end of the Pentalogy that there are 2 of 'them', writers, so guess 2 peas in an...alien pod.... Their 'issues' have 'issues', and sincerely suggest that they both seem professional help...after a couple or more...sets/series. The only caveat is to not stop at book 2, it is by far the weakest and seems a bit out of place, but even Logsdon said 2 was not all he had wanted it to be. There are more than 5 total and got those to read as well. Sci-Fi fans that also like things mixed with humor or humour should definitely like these. In other news, it is quite possible that Logsdon has taken too many hockey puck shots to the head but still....

Warning: subject matter not suitable for the young, small pets, and anyone without a warped sense of humor.
This book came up with the humor again, new characters were introduced, the captain found a love interest, Jezeden ego was pulled down a peg or two through his own choices. Also we got to know the other characters a lot more.
Still kept me laughing all the way though if you enjoy a laugh then this series is the ones for you, but this is the 6th book and you do need to start at the beginning.
The longer length of this book really helped. Allowing the characters to develop more drew me into this book more than the short stories. The change of supporting cast was nice too, because the previous bosses' shtick got to be pretty predictable by the end of the short story collection.
