What’s Georgiana Darcy’s story? Jane Austen tells us so little in "Pride and Prejudice" that we’re left to wonder. How did the early loss of her parents shape Miss Darcy’s character? And what about her near-disastrous affair with Mr. Wickham? Is that the true source of her shyness? She adores her brother and his new wife Elizabeth, but will their guiding influence be enough to steer Georgiana clear of new trouble as she comes of age and falls in love again?
This work is intended as a companion of sorts to "The Darcys of Pemberley" (sequel to "Pride and Prejudice"), with the timelines of the two running parallel. Both novels are unique and complete in themselves, but together they supply a richer reading experience than either one alone. The earlier book focused primarily on Darcy and Elizabeth’s relationship during their early married life. There was a third Darcy represented in the title, however. Now she and her courtship story take center stage in "Miss Georgiana Darcy of Pemberley."
“Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.” Robert A. Heinlein, Stranger in a Strange Land
Book 3/3 in The Darcys of Pemberley series. Book 1: The Darcys of Pemberley. Book 2: Return to Longbourn.
As a companion to book one, the reader knows the story-line, the high points, low points, danger and angst that was presented. The author states that it was written four years after the first book. However, I have read all the books in the series straight through so I am following fairly closely after having read the first book. I will admit to speed reading through the parts I already knew. I stopped to read the parts I didn’t know.
This book supplies Georgiana’s POV, her thoughts and feelings about her life. We have glimpses of her when she was younger, when she lost her father, her relationship with her brother William, her cousin Colonel Fitzwilliam, and then her new sister Elizabeth. She has grown into a young woman on the cusp of marriage. We hear of her presentation and her coming out, her experience at Ramsgate and her feelings about that. She reflects on what she wants in life and she has to deal with the fortune hunters and those with honorable intentions. It is sort of a coming of age book for our dear girl.
Book one was the story of Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam. Georgiana was present for most of the book; however, there were times she was missing from the page. This book supplies those blank places and fills us in on those questions left dangling from book one. It is clean, and a delightful read.
4.5 stars! Georgiana Darcy, A Sympathetic and Sensitive Heroine
In her latest release, Shannon Winslow circles back to her debut novel, a Pride and Prejudice sequel titled The Darcys of Pemberely, and retells the story from the perspective of Georgiana Darcy. While we do encounter Georgiana aplenty in The Darcys of Pemberley and witness a little of her first experience of being in love, the story’s main focus is Darcy and Elizabeth and the obstacles they overcome in the first year of marriage. Feeling that she perhaps didn’t do Georgiana enough justice, Ms. Winslow penned this companion novel to give Georgiana the page time and attention she so very much deserves! (The cool thing is that you can read both The Darcys of Pemberley and Miss Georgiana Darcy of Pemberley at the same time alternating chapters and have the complete story perfectly in sync!)
When it comes to Pride and Prejudice sequels, Georgiana Darcy is often a popular choice for authors to flesh-out and feature. For a character that receives so little page time, Jane Austen gives Georgiana an eventful and somewhat harrowing history. And as an unwed and shy sister with a romantic heart she is a character that easily ignites curiosity, interest, and compassion. There is often great variance in the directions authors choose to go with Georgiana – she’s been portrayed as painfully shy, playful and growing in confidence, immature, flirtatious, meek, spoiled, and sometimes resentful and jealous. But I think my favorite depictions of Georgiana are ones like Ms. Winslow’s – where she is portrayed as romantic and sensitive.
It goes without saying that the aspect I most enjoyed in this sequel was Georgiana. She truly was a character I could relate to, understand, and admire on so many levels. She was the perfect balance between sensible and hopeful romantic (not too Elinor and not too Marianne!). It was interesting to hear her thoughts towards marriage and love, to understand her discontent with being treated like a child or dependent, and witness her development firsthand. I especially enjoyed observing Georgiana’s connection with music – it is not merely just an accomplishment or talent, it is a form of communication, a refuge, a release (something I can very much understand). I fell in love with Georgiana when I saw how delicately and sensitively she handled her suitors. And I greatly admired her desire to better herself and her foresight to learn more about becoming a proper mistress.
Georgiana’s character is also revealed to the reader in her relationships with Darcy and Elizabeth as well as flashbacks to significant moments of her childhood. The bond between Darcy and Georgiana is everything that is tender and devoted, the reader can truly witness how Darcy’s care and concern for Georgiana are equally reciprocated in full measure. And my heart was touched by the sincere and steadfast relationship between Elizabeth and Georgiana. Elizabeth is Georgiana’s confidant and protector. Having an intimate understanding of Georgiana’s feelings and heart, Elizabeth does whatever she can to assist and comfort Georgiana in any way possible. It was touching to see Georgiana miss and long for Elizabeth when separated; their sisterly bond and strong connection was inspiring to witness.
Miss Georgiana Darcy of Pemberley is a companion novel that enriches Ms. Winslow’s already satisfying and praiseworthy Pride and Prejudice sequel! Full of depth, sympathy, and insight this book is sure to equally please readers who wonder what becomes of Georgiana as well as ones who can empathize with such a sensitive and introverted character. If you haven’t read any of Shannon Winslow’s books I urge you to rectify that immediately! These astute and skillfully written tales are not to be missed!
RECOMMENDATION: I think the best experience might be to read both books simultaneously since there are parts of the story-line left in the shadows because Georgiana is not always in the know. I will be trying that myself next time around!
*While individually I gave The Darcys of Pemberley and Miss Georgiana Darcy of Pemberley 4 and 4.5 stars, but as two stories combined together I’d give them 5 stars.
A sequel to Pride and Prejudice told from Georgiana Darcy's point of view. Her time at Pemberley, in London and her loves. Can she like her brother find happiness, with or without marriage. An enjoyable story.
I love this author. She has a gift of taking you to that era so that you cannot put the book down. I have a few more that I ordered to continue to learn more of the characters from Pride and Prejudice.
I had to look up when I read The Darcys of Pemberley: November 6, 2014 is the date I posted a review. And since it was some 10 months ago I was not exactly sure I remembered all the details as this book is a parallel telling of the same time period but from Georgiana's POV. (I read something like 150 books per year, so forgive me if I don't remember every detail of every plot.)
As I began reading the events fell into place so you would suppose that knowing what was going to happen might lessen my enjoyment. WRONG. I found great pleasure in reading our young lady's viewpoint. I don't remember any other story told as such so I have nothing to taint my impressions of such.
I was impressed, again, at how this author manages to write in Jane Austen's voice AND how well written the entire story is. For me it was obvious that Ms. Winslow put a lot of effort into writing the progression of Georgiana's thought processes. We know she is shy, we know she has not yet had her "season", her coming-out in London, that she has been reared without the benefit of a mother and of a sister. The two aunts with which she is blessed are only occasionally in her life, visiting one with years between visits. So also knowing that her much older brother is reticent with his words, it is not difficult to imagine that as her enters the world of being a very eligible debutante she might be a little overwhelmed with the attention. AND on the other hand, we all know of Ramsgate and the crushing blow that was to her psyche. So it was very interesting to read of how Georgiana perceives men, young and even slightly older, who enter her circle and pay attention to her. Has she become a better judge of men and their motivations? She does have Elizabeth...and Darcy...............and her other guardian, Col. Fitzwilliam. But they are not always there as other matters gain their attention, plus Georgiana cannot reveal how her heart seems to be turning to all of those nearest and dearest to her.
Mrs. Collins has a role here. If you have read the other book(s) you know how she has had a major trauma in her life and how she now lives closer to Pemberley with her sister-in-law, Ruth. There are other new players: friends and neighbors and our perennial bad guy just won't go away. Shannon did an excellent job of telling all those events from a different person's view. It was at the climax point that I was glad I remembered the details of the first book and, at this point in the story, where you will be left with the knowledge that you need to read both books to have the whole story.
There is some angst and I was touched (with watery eyes) to read up close and personal the dilemma, the torture Georgiana is experiencing as the lives of family members seem to be gaining their happiness in romance around her and she comes to questioning if she is meant to find her happiness in music alone. She does have the example that a marriage for love alone seems best. Can she live without that?
This was a very enjoyable read. Shannon Winslow does not have any MA scenes but the love and tenderness of romance is there...along with a bit of tension and frustration and even weeping into the pillow for our dear girl.
I got this book because I really enjoyed The Darcys of Pemberley and Return to Longbourn by this author. I knew when I bought this that it was basically The Darcys of Pemberley rewritten from Georgiana Darcy's point of view. I was hoping for a little more, but it was pretty much the same retelling, with an emphasis on how much Georgiana was in love with Colonel Fitzwilliam. There wasn't much added to the character or the story in this retelling, so I was a little disappointed. I think this might have been interesting as a stand-alone book (although, you would need to read the other book to find out what happened to Elizabeth when the nightmares were occurring). I will continue to read Shannon Winslow's books because I enjoyed her other sequels to Pride and Prejudice, but I think I'll stay away from any of her retellings of her own stories from other characters' viewpoints.
You may want to read "The Darcys Pemberley" before reading this book. It is about Georgiana and her coming out into society with mentions of Elizabeth and Darcy. The characters felt real to me especially with the characters misunderstanding each other and Ms. Winslow also keeps their canon personalities until they grow up in the cases of the younger characters. The story did keep me guessing because she could have been with anyone mentioned. The story did grip me and made me keep turning the pages. The only thing I wish we could figure out is what Georgiana's baby's name is and if the baby survived. I would recommend this book to readers who like dramas, "Pride and Prejudice" and are fans of relationships
I am so glad I got to read about Georgiana’s love story, told from her POV. We see so little of her in Pride and Prejudice that it was wonderful to get to know this lovely lady. I also enjoyed getting to see more of Colonel Fitzwilliam, our gallant hero. Of course I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Lizzy, Darcy, Charlotte and other favorite characters from P&P. This is a companion book to the Darcys of Pemberly. This whole series is phenomenal. I am so impressed by Shannon Winslow’s writing. It is so like Jane Austen that I feel like Miss Austen herself would approve of these books. The narrator does an absolutely fabulous job bringing this story to life. Very highly recommend!
This was my least favorite of the series. It felt like the story just didn't add that much over what we saw of Georgiana's story in The Darcys of Pemberley. I might have enjoyed it better if I had read them spaced out over time or in parallel rather than one after the other.
I read Pride and Prejudice many times and every time I wondered what would happen to Miss Georgiana. This book did the work perfectly well!💕 it came at the perfect moment. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was quite good ⭐
This book was a nice, fluffy piece that made me feel positive and uplifted before continuing on to darker works. I recommend for all Austen fans who need a good pick me up.
Lives keep going on and this kept it going. Thoroughly keeping the reader interested to keep reading. Will always thank the author for keeping Austen alive.
I love anything having to do with Jane Austen. After really getting into Austen's work about a year ago, I have been reading many continuation books. I have to say that I love the writing style and story lines by Shannon Winslow the best. I really feel that I am reading words from Jane Austen herself! When I am reading another author's book on the same subject, I always seem to compare it to Ms. Winslow's work. I have read all of Ms. Winslow's books, so I was really looking forward to reading Miss Georgiana's story. I was certainly not disappointed either. It's great to see how sweet little Georgiana grew up after not knowing much about her life from Jane Austen herself. Ms. Winslow has shown how Georgiana has weathered heartache, betrayal and loneliness. Yet, her personality still makes her one of the sweetest and most sincere people you'd ever like to meet (in fiction!). If she were a real person, I'd like to have her as a best friend. The story line wasn't just all romance. There was quite a bit of suspense going on. I truly wasn't sure how this book was going to end. Great book! I highly recommend it to others!
This story entails the further romantic adventures of Georgiana Darcy of P&P fame. It was fun to hear Georgiana’s viewpoint and thoughts about emerging into adulthood, and playing with the big girls in the all-important game of Husband Hunting in Regency England. My problem - I guess my 21st century mind has trouble with her secret falling in love with her first cousin, so it just felt awkward reading of Georgiana’s personal quest.
I did find other suitors and characters interesting, Mr. Sanditon especially. (Worthy of his own story, imo!)
Revisiting Lady Catherine and her daughter Anne was a delightful side story. Nice to have Anne actually become a healthier, functioning female with a mind of her own. And once again, seeing Lady C. challenged was gratifying. She’s one tuff old bird!
I found the ‘event’ with Mr. Wickam rather strange. More detail in the set-up would have been helpful in the overall plot. I would have liked to have such a despicable character accountable. Overall I liked the story, but not as good as “Return to Longbourn”.
Shannon Winslow has succeeded in re-creating Jane Austen's voice in these "sequels." It's amazing to be able to find out what happened to these beloved characters after the original novel Pride and Prejudice ended. Even though no one could really be a new Jane Austen, Winslow definitely doesn't disappoint Jane's multitude of fans, at least not this one! I thought perhaps this story, a companion to The Darcys of Pemberley, might be too repetitive or redundant, but it wasn't at all. Instead we learn a great deal more about the lovely Georgiana, an admirable and interesting character in her own right. A very good read!

I loved this book. I also loved her previous book that it pairs with, The Darcys of Pemberley. I have many, many Pride & Prejudice spinoffs and sequels and Shannon Winslow is one of my top two authors for this category. I highly recommend the book.
Although I enjoyed the book, I felt that Georgiana didn't always react in the way I imagined. That in no way stopped my enjoyment, rather it made me reassess not just Georgiana, but my ideas of her. If you like P&P continuations and variations I would recommend giving this one a read.
